Used to have a really great mechanic. Pulled in one day with a problem and he said that he was too busy to fix it but took a couple of minutes to point out the defective part to me. Said I'd have to buy it from the dealer. "Only 2 screws and connectors. Install the replacement exactly the same way." I did...no problems.
He got a Christmas gift, of course.

I would check for trouble codes and the most common issues are the spark plugs, coil packs or a vacuum leak. He argued with me that I was wrong and it was the fuel pump and told me he fixes cars all the time but didn't have time. I told him I'm not taking his car and he took it to a shop. His neighbor who's a good friend told me it was a vacuum leak in one of the small hoses.

Good reasoning with the in-tank fuel pump. It's just too big a job to do for the sake of 'preventative maintenance'. If you are driving with a suspect fuel pump, and you do get stuck with the car not starting (turn the ignition on and you don't hear the electronic whine from the back of the car), you can usually get the pump going again by giving the bottom of the fuel tank, near where the fuel pump housing is, a few whacks with a rubber mallet (or similar). BUT, once you're at that point and the pump has actually failed, get it changed ASAP because that method will only work for so long.

Scotty, that explains why my brother's '07 Camry (115k miles) vibrates when it's idling in drive. Changed the coil packs and spark plugs since they were old and starting to fail. That helped a bit but it still vibrates in idle. Drives fine, but will try changing the tranny fluid to see if it revitalizes the transmission a bit. Previous owner apparently never changed it. Very useful when interacting with someone you're paying for help. Thanks Scotty.

Thanks Scott for the advise. I use to tell the mechanic take your time. But not so he/she could be lazy, but more for that I want them to be careful and make a good repair job, because if I would stress the mechanic. I would be afraid that the mechanic would make mistakes and a poor repair job. Next time I maybe should be more precise and tell the mechanic if he/she can have it fixed in 3 days!

Going forward, every time Scotty says I have been a mechanic for 52 years, I will take a shot until the first time he says 53 years.

Hey Scotty my '94 Camry 2.2L does the same thing as your Celica in gear, stopped at iddle! I just put it in neutral too! No mechanic told me, or knew, what it was. Thanks!
