Some facts from Wikipedia about this uniqie little Gem
The Daihatsu Charade is a supermini which was first introduced in 1977. Daihatsu considers the Charade a "large compact" car to differentiate it from smaller compacts in its lineup, such as the Daihatsu Mira/Cuore. It helped replace the Daihatsu Consorte, although the Charmant took over from the bigger-engined Consortes.

In China, Daihatsu Charade is called "Xiali" and made by FAW Tianjin, under the registered mark of "China FAW". From 1986 September 30, to 2009, it sold over 1.5 million in that country.
The third generation of the Daihatsu Charade (G100) debuted in 1987. With styling by Daihatsu chief stylist Hiroshi Aoki and colleague Hideyuki Ueda,[7] it originally shipped with a carburetted 1.0 L three-cylinder engine (CB23), also available as a diesel and turbodiesel, or with a 1.3 L four-cylinder with single carburetor (HC-C). Either three-door or five-door hatchback bodystyles were originally offered. A 1.0 L twin-cam fuel injected intercooled turbo (CB70/CB80), named GTti and delivering 105 PS JIS (77 kW) was later added, only available as a three-door hatch. Fuel injected versions of the 1.3 L four-cylinder (HC-E) and three-cylinder (CB90) were later added. The GTxx GTti's can have CB70 or CB80, depending on the country/region sold.

In the UK, the GTti had a fairly successful rally career competing in the RAC Lombard Rally in 1989 and 1990 and was highly competitive in the Safari Rally. The GTti won class honours many times and was able to mix it with some of the 2-litre cars and on occasion troubling some of the 4wd cars!

The third-generation car was sold in the United States for just four years, from 1988 through 1992. The car sold poorly, despite construction "as tight as a frozen head bolt"[7] and attractive styling for the market segment,[8] perhaps because of its high price, few dealerships, rough running three-cylinder,[7] low performance (0-60 mph/97 km/h in 15 seconds),[7] and unfortunate translation of the name Charade into English, and the company withdrew permanently from the US market. Sales for 1989 were 15,118. Only the three-door hatchbacks and four-door sedans were available. The North American Charade appeared in three different trim levels until 1989; the CES (Base model), CLS, and CLX. The CES came with a 53 bhp, 1.0L three-cylinder, EFi engine called the CB-90. The other two variants were available with the standard CB-90 or the more powerful 1.3 L four-cylinder EFi "HC-E" engine.
In the Australian market, the GTti was unavailable and the turbocharged petrol Charade used the lower powered carburetor engine (CB60/61) from the previous generation.[5] However, quite a few GTti's & GTxx's have been imported from Japan and so do have a good following.

Toyota engines are still available, as well as copied versions like the Huali and various Geely products such as the Haoqing and its derivatives.
In 2003, the Charade name was resurrected in the UK and Australia. The new Charade is now a rebadged Daihatsu Mira (Cuore in other European markets, Charade in Morocco[9]), and it is positioned one market segment below its previous generations. Toyota believes that the Toyota Yaris suffices as their smallest car in Australia. In 2011, Daihatsu Europe will bring the Toyota Yaris on the market as Daihatsu Charade. This will be the last new model introduced under the Daihatsu nameplate in Europe
The turbocharged GTti version was replaced by a more conventional GTi with an SOHC 16-valve 1.6 L engine. This version was engineered by Italian ex-racing driver De Tomaso (the previous owner of Innocenti), including racing-derived camshaft, and was capable of 124 hp JIS (91 kW) in the Japanese market. The export version was detuned to 105 hp DIN (77 kW). De Tomaso also added their own bodykit, Recaro seats, a Nardi Torino steering wheel, and Pirelli sports tyres. A total of 120,000 Charade GTi were produced following this joint effort.

i think that sound u metioned was esp with the 1300 EFI 4 cilinder.... If you removed the funnel going from the airfilter to the side fender (for sound reduction) and left it opend just before your airfilter, you where actually having some sort of a turbo sucking sounds when you gave it more throttle then it was able to rpm up too

I had a carb model one of these. It had done over 200,000 kms before it had its first oil leak. Which was a drip a week. lol One of the best small cars ever made cheap, cheerful and bags of fun. My old car is still going strong to this day.

Nathan, you really stumbled onto a rare gem. I spent some time in Barbados when I was younger and I couldn't go anywhere without seeing these cars. I wanted one of them 2 b honest but its a shame that Daihatsu like Peugeot,Renault and Alfa Romeo got out of dodge all those years ago. A Charade would be the ultimate fuel sipper

Great video! Thank you for sharing
I currently own a 1988 Daihatsu Charade (affectionally name "Yoshi" ) like this one, and it only has 55k miles on it. I bought it five years ago with only 48k miles at the time, and it lives an easy, lazy retirement just doing errands and scooting around. It does occasionally go into car shows, as it's in pristine, factory condition. I don't take it too far, as it's not a great freeway car and plus wanna keep the miles off it. But's a fun little car and has been so reliable and trouble free. I can relate to much of what's on your car and it's interesting some of the small differences between the '90 and my '88 model

tools in that bag did come with it, spark plug spanner etc, that orange space saver wheel, awesome, I picked 1 up for my main charade I love it, worth about $100 alone in Australia, very nice looking g101charade you have. I have 2 g100's a g202 and a g203 at the moment. They won 1st and 9th in world rally championships using that motor I believe and used the same cb 993cc engine for many years in different models, originally designed to run on pure ethanol, they don't mind the heat, the cold not so much. I'd love to get my hands on a g10 turbo model, one day :)

The other one I bought used in 2005 from an old lady it looked exactly like the one in this video except it had automatic and A/C . It only got 25 mpgs overall great car well built. If I see another one I would buy it.

I had a '91, the last year of these in the US. Bought it in '00 for $1500. It had about the same mileage. 3 cyl. 5 spd. No a/c though. It had 143k when I sold it like a dummy 4 years later. I should've stored it & kept it for times like these. I haven't seen one of these on the road for some time now.

I work as the Part's Manager at a Large Miami Auto Dealer, back in the 82 to 00, and we had these. And the only item we sold where Oil Filters for Oil Changes. But other than that they just ran & ran. ( The third-generation car was sold in the United States for just four years, from 1988 through 1992.)

I had one when new and I absolutely LOVE how incredibly Ferrari like that engine sounds. Think about it and compare to any older Ferrari test drive on TH-cam. The sound is subdued of course but that 3 cylinder produces a big time Italian throaty roar - which is odd to say the least. Don't know how they did that. Pretty incredible and honestly the only compact car that sounded like that on the market. This is an older video I know but very glad you've kept them up as a brilliant historical document.

I sold an 87 Civic DX w/ ice cold AC a couple years ago. My grampa had it since new, towed bhind the motor home. Had 80k on the car, 40k total on the engine and auto transmission. I just could not warm up to the same gold color. If it were burgundy, grey, heck even white...and with a 5 speed... I would have kept it. But already had my Turbo Chevy Sprint still running awesome with 190k. The guy that bought the Honda will be happy w/ it a loooong time.

Overall mileage on this thing each fill-up? I sold my Volvo because it wasn't very kind with my wallet (Still have my special ambulse, so I got an Opel Corsa, which you know as a Chevrolet Corsa/ Chevy or Celta.
It has the 4 cylinder n/a 1,5 Isuzu diesel engine, no AC, no servo, just nothing that can eat up any extra fuel, which that those 50 liters of fuel, can take me from Oslo to Frankfurt in Germany one way!
Not too bad, but newer cars gets just as good mileage with heavier cars.
I would gladly change my Corsa for a Charade, but then it has to have a the 1 liter, 3 cylinder diesel engine and a compression just a notch better tjhan what my current car has :)
    Good find there!

@PeterGriffin4200 When this car was made no not really. In the last few years Toyota own a part of Daihatsu. They are still seperate companies though. Daihatsu's engineers do a large part of the design of the smaller engines that Toyota use. For example the 1.3 VVti engine in the Toyota Yaris is really a Daihatsu designed engine.

Since the seatbelt was attached to the door in the same place the lock was, and the lock was attached to the screws that held the seatbelt on. I would say it is there to keep the seatbelt from snapping off in the course of an accident. Very inventive if you ask me! Great car!

That car has actually nothing to do with Toyota mechanicly. It is indeed similar in shape and layout to Toyota Starlet, bet the aren't siblings. This chasis (dubbed G100) is Daihatsu's own work from 1988. It was later (in 1989) upscaled and Daihatsu Applause (A101) was born.
They are some interchengable parts, like steering wheels, light machine, radiator cap or rims. But thats all.
I'm a Daihatsu freak, so please, don't spread gossip. ;)
