    They were reliable enough. My high school friend bought an '81 ice blue coupe, 1.6 liter with the four speed manual. It became the family runabout for twenty years. The last time it occurred to my friend to mention the Chevette he said that the only things he had to do to it was regular maintenance, several sets of tires, brakes, one clutch and that was it. My friend always took excellent car of his vehicles and the Chevette was no exception as it looked as new when I last saw it during the Summer of 1999.

So many memories in that car. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Now see if you can find a 'like new' Chevy Citation.

    I remember my Chevette. It was a fun car. The passenger's floor plate rusted out. We would empty the ashtray through the fist-sized hole and I would sometimes aim for puddles and splash my passengers. The engine was indestructible but the only way the car would come to a stop was shear willpower. Ah memories.

      Someone gave me a 84 Chevette 2 door that had a seized engine. It had the drivers floor rusted through. I had plans on fitting a Nissan v6 (that someone gave me) with a 5spd manual to it, but that rusted floor pretty much killed that idea. I gave it to someone and they made a dune buggy out of it.

    I had an "85 Chevette, 2-door, 5 speed stick, I liked the car very much! I even put an Audiovox graphic equilizer/amp into its AM/FM cassette stereo system, wired some 6 x 9 boxed speakers in the cargo area; I used to drive around with the backseat
    down, it made the back end like" bandshell", and the sound was great!! I drove it from Grand Rapids, MI. to Tulsa, OK. & back;
    Man, That was an adventure for me... ( Stopped in St. Louis, MO. to visit Anheuser- Busch; Left there with a nice "beer buzz" !!)
    I was finally traded it in on a 1989 Dodge Dakota pickup; the Chevette only had 32K on the odometer, and the Dodge dealer stole
    it from me in the trade - "More fool me"...!! But I still think about that car, and I wish I still had it!!

    My great Aunt 92 years old, had one like this that I bought from her for my mom to scoot around in back around 1998..it was a 1985 Chevette bought from Avis Car sales as a former rental car...even had original Avis key chain! Anyway, when mom got it in 1998 it only had maybe 44K miles..Aunt Lucille did not drive much and took very good care of it..still..that little 4 cyl ran like crap!!! Even with low miles, the cat had to have a bypass tube added as I guess it was clogged or something..a mechanic did it while mom was up in PA for a few months..I sold on E-Bay for more than you would think in 2004 as a low mileage mint museum piece that it was..as it did not have a single "scuff"...This person sure hit a lot of things in 23,000 miles!! Good Lord..granny was blind!!

It always delivered 36 to 38 miles per gallon of gas. I also had power steering and brakes on it. When it was sold, it had a ton of miles on it. I really loved that car. A couple of weeks ago, I found some papers from that car. I checked the VIN number from the paperwork on the Chevette. I was shocked when I discovered my old Chevette is still registered, and on the road.

    I'd love to find one like this.
    The 2.8 V6 will drop right in. Use the port-injected one from a later third-gen Camaro, and a manual transmission, and this little thing will go like hell.

      I guess that was a non-interference timing belt since your engine wasn't ruined.

    We had a 1979. I was a super little car. Great on gas. We drove it everywhere for years. We had to sell it when our daughter was born so we could get a.c. then the guy wrecked it shortly after. Sad

    i like the rims. I had one but not in as good shape as this one on the inside. The car felt good going around corners and could eassily hold my bicycle in the back. ...wish it was fitted with porsche cayman brakes though.
