Great reaction and welcome to the world of YOYOKA! Excellent observation on her foot technique. She explains it here in this adorable drum lesson: th-cam.com/video/B5EUmV9Jz-E/w-d-xo.html
Here she is at a club recently doing GTBT with a band she never played with, she has no rehearsal, never played this kit, and cowbell is nowhere near her usual spot. She is a beast. th-cam.com/video/SM85JohFkE8/w-d-xo.html
She did a BTS video where she explained the process behind her cover videos. She does the microphones, the cameras, the editing... but the thing that blew my mind was when she said she only needs to listen to a song 2 or 3 times before she can play it...
At 14 she's now one of the best drummers in the world. She is a prodigy, and the Internet makes it possible for folks like us all over the world to follow her career.
There is one thing you should notice. She is self-taught. Before she could even talk, she was always drawn to the drums. When her parents practiced she would always crawl towards them. And the only foreign band that her parents knew about was The Beatles, they had never heard of Led Zeppelin before her. All the songs and bands she discovered by herself. And learn how to play by herself, only by ear. And I think that is a big difference. She was pushing her parents from the start, not the other way around (what is usually the case).
Yes, there is a nice video where she explains how she works to make and record a cover. And this was maybe when she was 10. First she searches for a song she likes. Then she learns it. Then she sets up the recording of sound and video, tunes the drums etc. Then she do the recording. Then she edit it. Then she upload it. Never did she say, then I asked dad to ... not even when it did come to choose music. Because her dad did not really know about all bands she found and liked.
As others have said, Yoyoka's only gone from strength to strength, and is now living in the US, in LA. She's had a mix of self-teaching and some great mentors, and just raw natural talent. She's covered some of the most difficult drum parts in her cover videos, and live, and is part of the Ken Okada (spelling?) jazz ensemble, which I believe has a Grammy winning sax player as part of the group. She's getting regular notice by some major names; her cover of Deep Purple's Burn was actually reacted to on TH-cam by the master himself Ian Paice, and Robert Plant favourably reviewed this particular performance lol. Check out more on her channel. She's got some wonderful original material in which she is clearly challenging herself and leaving us all in awe hehe.
Somewhere on TH-cam is a video of Robert Plant being interviewed, and the interviewer shows him this video. Needless to say, he's impressed. He says that this isn't an easy track to play.
Her playing isn't even the best thing about this. The best thing is the big grin throughout, and the laugh at the end. Because it makes the statement "I have discovered the joy that comes with playing music."
Brilliant review. So we start up watching expecting some tinkety plonk 8 yr old and boom this mind warping gobsmacking exploding bundle of energy is powering through a rock classic like it was nothing. You can only imagine what her parents were dealing with, both of them professional musicians, and the beautiful thing is that with only modest means they have sacrificed a lot to support Yoyoka. I think They must have felt a sense of obligation to treasure such talent. They uprooted the family to move to the states, living in modest houses and suffering problems with basic utilities. Many child prodigies burn out but here this was never likely. Her legions of fans have been following her progress and they will atttest that Yoyoka, also known as the Hokkaido Hammer, or The Professor has never for one second disappointed. She holds the highest standards of professionalism and integrity which is a credit to her and her family. Look forward to more of your reviews, it is through reviews from drummers that we the fans have learned to better appreciate the craft. Oh and did anyone mention she was giving tutorials before she was hardly out of diapers?
Welcome to the Yoyoka rabbit hole. Your time won’t be wasted. She’s a joy to watch and her skills speak for itself. I’ve never seen such a gifted drummer. Her ear and feel are just amazing esp for such a young age. I would suggest you should watch her earlier vids before you check her recent ones like ‘Smoky’, ‘Onyx’ and ‘Steam’. Then ‘Burn’ and ‘YYZ’. RATM covers then to ‘Seven Days’ by Sting. Those are some of the highlights. Check her improvisational work with collabs. I think that is where she shines the best. Her drumming instincts are just top notch. And if you have the time, watch her 12th birthday celebration with Japanese ‘legendary’ musicians. She looks like a baby that plays like a seasoned session drummer. Just an outstanding achievement. Anyway, thank you for the reaction. 👍🏼✌🏼
She was born October 2009. She sat in with pro bands pre teen (Fall Out Boy and Cyndi Lauper) and was gigging at 6 years old. There is a you tube video of her at that time playing a stripped down version of "Onyx" and taking solos. Her progress has been stellar. The youngest person to be endorsed by pearl, and you can listen to anything she has done since and be pretty amazed. Ian Paice (who watched her "Burn" cover, Robert Plant (Who saw this) and Dave Grohl have all praised and encouraged her. She can play anything. She now resides in the USA and plays jam nights at the Whiskey A Go Go, behind pro musicians who seem to love her. At now 14 years of age she is beyond pro standard, and is cited among the top 500 drummers world wide. You'll have to check out her studio performance of the Ocean where in one take, no rehearsal and no click track she played with a then 9 year old Ellen (Bass), and teenagers Eva (vocal) and Mateo (guitar), the Led Zeppelin song "The Ocean". Four amazing young musicians. I love that she does the take and posts it errors (very rare) and all. I say cherry pick your favorite tracks. She's next level now. Check out her covers of Colorado Bulldog (recent) or Led Boots (Recent) and you'll see. I've enjoyed watching this young lady grow up behind the kit having found her during Covid, and now you've found the rabbit hole it's a great place to spend some time. Shout out to her parents and mentors too for feeding the dream. Have fun and be well.
The next vid you should watch from her channel has to her rendition of Senri Kawaguchi's Onyx. Jazz rock live in a band in a bar at 7. Senri is another drummer from Japan you might look up. She certainly can rock but jazz and fusion more.
Had to listen to her play this at least 6 times before I could accept it was not some type of trick. I4 yrs old and is a master. She went on to play numerous Led songs and is known by her followers as Jon Bonhams reincarnation. Not to be pigeon holed at nine years old she did a ton of rock songs with incredible skills and actually sat in for the drummer of Fall Out Boy to play a song in concert at 9yrs old. She has gone on to play many songs of highly accomplished drummers. Plays with professional artist at the Whiskey A Go Go. As she and her family recently moved to the USA.
At least until she graduated from elementary school, she did not read music, everything was by ear. And she taught herself to play the drums and was named to Drummer World's Top 500 at age 11. As I told her mother, she is music herself.😆 From🇯🇵
Her parents are both musicians and as a one-year old she got to play around with anything she wanted...and she locked on the drums. By the time of this video she had already been playing for 7 years! Google her name, read her story, watch more videos. And she has a younger brother who is playing guitar and singing also.
i think she's 14 now. lives and plays in socal. played with many big name stars, regular player at the Whiskey, records jazz fusion professionally. yeah, shes pretty good.
You are correct! She will be 15 on Oct 12. No disrespect intended. Except for the "pretty good" part. Pretty good is for really talented kids "for their age". She is "awesome", and able to play things many drummers with 20-30 years experience are just simply unable to play. She was voted one of the Top 500 Drummers OF ALL TIME (by DrummerWorld) at age 11, youngest ever. Prodigy level for sure.
@@Glen.Black. And yet through it all, she keeps it real and so humble, a real team player. @@markdecker6190 Thanks Mark! I agree 100% with you. You are spot on! I spent a lot of time with her and her family in Las Vegas when they home stayed with me. She is so kind and polite. I met EllenPlaysBass through her and attended her recording session of "The Ocean". Ellen lives less than 2 miles from me and I have remained friends with her father Hovak. I bought YOYOKA, her father and two friends tickets to the Silk Sonic concert and I got to sit next to her and watch her taking everything in. Then, because of her, I got to go backstage and meet Anderson.Paak, who treated us wonderfully. She gave me a personal concert after I asked her if she ever played anything with chopsticks, and she said no. I grabbed every empty container I could find and set up a "kit". Her mom held the pieces in place while I recorded it for myself. Definitely a highlight of my life! Fortunately she has a lot of fans that feel the way we do. Thanks again for your comment!
She is 14 now living in California. Plays often at the Whiskey a go go and other venues with pro bands. Recently did a collaboration with other kids ranging from 9 - 14 yrs old. Muse's hysteria. Got to check it out.
Around this era and maybe even a bit younger, she had some really cute drum lesson videos on youtube where she teaches the Bonham grooves and triplets etc.
Thanks for sharing! She has covered several Zepp songs and all of them are incredibly great (my favorite is "Dazed and Confused")! She also covered many more classic hard rock songs so please check them out!
She's around 13, now and living in LA. Here, she is playing a Jeff Beck tune. th-cam.com/video/IrQpzUec004/w-d-xo.html Amazing!!! The best part for me is that she seems to be so happy! That's the best part. Life is beautiful!
Me too. He's right - this is why YT is so fantastic. When I first listened to Led Zep 1 like, 51, 52 years ago, it was like a mental dose of salts. And then all this time later, Yoyoka plops into my TH-cam feed. Man, it was wonderful.
Great reaction sir! She's still crushing it, at an unbelievable level of course. Youngest ever added to DummerWorld Top 500 drummers of ALL TIME, at age 11. Has a resume more impressive than most 50 y.o. pros in the best bands in the world. I commissioned this documentary on her a couple years ago when she was age 12, will give you a summary of her life up to that point. From there on, she's soared to the moon! Liked your reaction. Welcome to the YOYOKA rabbit hole. It's a nice dive. Please keep on reacting to her. Not only is YOYOKA a phenomenal drummer, but she's a really nice person and a joy to watch in any situation. Yoyoka is 14 now. She's planning a 15th birthday bash at the Bourbon Room in Los Angeles. She brought her family to the US to further her career. She's a regular at Hollywood's Whiskey A-go-go. Looking for more of your reactions to her many covers!
Don’t easily believe what people said about health condition in particular. It is personal matter. There are always irresponsible people to spread lies. I suggest don’t be part of spreading unverified health matter. Be wise and be responsible
UPDATE: You might want to check this out for fun and amazement! It is from a live stream she did, since you reacted to this video. Lots of gems. She plays a song (Don't Change by INXS - She had no idea how to even say the bands name...lol) she's never heard of, or listened to before (Seen her do this on other live streams), without listening to it first, and plays over the drum track, which seems would be harder than how they do them on Drumeo where they remove the drum track? AND she does it without prior notice as a special request to a guy Brian who had made 3 - $100 donations. YOYOKA is even reading the chat messages off her phone while playing another song during the same live stream. Only our girl YOYOKA can pull this off! "Musical Genius" starts at 1:05:38. She waits for the song to start, then after a few seconds, gets after it like she's been playing it forever. th-cam.com/video/CD8reU4lwCs/w-d-xo.html Hope you check it out!
Oh sweet! Yeah I’ll definitely check it out! Still need to dig into more of her stuff! Been busy lately but definitely going to get around to it! Thanks so much! 🔥
@@setonhillstudios Cool! She is amazing. I commissioned this documentary about her when she was 12. It is a summary of her life up to that point. Of course she has gone off the charts, next level since then. I don't expect you to watch it, but is very well worth it if you are interested. It's 31 Min, but done really well and pretty much covers everything age 1.5-12. Yes 1.5 y.o. is when she started. Of course she wasn't playing live on stage at music festivals until the ripe old age of 4...lol This one is only 2 Min "Japanese kids "Yoyoka" (4 years old ) cover Drum / The Beatles Come Together 4歳 よよか" th-cam.com/video/fKICpOE4OQo/w-d-xo.html Nowadays, she hangs out and jams with Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine's guitarist) on Friday nights at his house, and plays with all kinds of different bands at "Whiskey A-Go-Go" once or twice a month....lol Has a full album she is releasing on Oct 13 of original songs. No time to be eating dirt like we used to do.
She's amazing. While it's absolutely exhilarating to listen to her 'rock' covers, personally, I was totally blown away when I heard her cover of Sting's song 'Seven days'. I'm not a drummer, but I know that's not an easy song to cover. Vinnie colaiuta did it for Sting. A different genre, but definitely worth checking out.
Yoyoka is a once in a lifetime prodigy. She is actually better than anyone else I have seen. And there are lots of skilled kids out there. She could play in a jazz band at 6. In a band! Not doing a cover. She totally understand music and has a totally uncanny memory. She can hear a song twice and then play it note for note. She is also totally nerdy on technique. She had a drum school that she started at 7 I think, where she did teach common techniques and also techniques she had invented. She is 14 now and has already done more than most drummers do in their lifetime. But, you have to remember that she is a kid. She is also probably slightly autistic. Some years ago I was kind of worried, because she was so good and wanted so much, but generally, she was not mature enough. She wanted to US, and I was worried. What will happen? But, her fantastic family moved to the US. And now it seems she is making great success. But still, she is now only 14 and, except for drumming, she is just a teenager. I wish her all well and hope life works out for her and she will be known as the best drummer ever. It is actually a possibility. Just as a side note; her parents are good musicians and also her little brother. There are some very fun videos where the entire family is jamming.
One more comment. There are other small kids that can play significantly faster than Yoyoka. So, if you measure skills with speed, then Yoyoka is not extra ordinary. Where Yoyoka shines is groove and understanding of the music needs. She also have a very good memory and can play a song exactly as even a very good drummer, but then she add Yoyoka flairs. Often enhancing the original.
Shido is her younger brother. He covered Roundabout by Yes and 21st century schizoid man by King Crimson. Why? Because they were part of the soundtrack of a favorite anime? All the Soma family are multi instrumentalists and singers.
I'm no expert but I don't know if I agree that she's on the spectrum. I just watched her livestream from the other day (her English is really coming along) and I didn't pick that up at all.
@powerdavid - If you get stunned within 10 seconds, stops and tells so and really means it, then it might be a top notch reaction. I am soo tired of all that has to comment on stopping. And so are many reactors. Som even tells you to go elsewhere if you do not like stopping. Yes, there are not so good reactors that just stops without thinking or having anything to say. But, this reactor do have something intelligent to say. Then let him stopp!

If it hasn't already been said.....check out the video where Ian Paice watches her do "Burn"
Someone else was telling me about it! I definitely need to give that a watch! Thanks! 🔥
That giggle at the end kills me every time!
8 years old, hitting those triples - and she's only gotten better.
So wild! Thanks for watching!
Yoyoka is a real musician and a wondergirl.
I have to listen to that video couple times a year... it makes me smile so much every time.
Me too. He's right - this is why YT is so fantastic. When I first listened to Led Zep 1 like, 51, 52 years ago, it was like a mental dose of salts. And then all this time later, Yoyoka plops into my TH-cam feed. Man, it was wonderful.
She makes drumming look so easy and effortless. I'm looking forward to seeing her newer videos. Thanks
Thank you for watching! She is definitely an incredible talent and I can’t wait to check out more from her!
Her led Boots cover (The Narada Michael Walden Foundation version). She has a lot of great moments from over the years.
Sweet, thanks for the heads up!
Yoyoka, your my hero you and David Garabaldi..too tough ✌️😎
Here's Ian Paice reacting to her cover of Deep Purple's "Burn" - th-cam.com/video/0RyJKiollcA/w-d-xo.html
Hate to be contirevsial but already one to the best drummers already. Go down the rabbit hole you will find out.
she played deep purple burn song for Ian Paice on You Tube
What is hip from Tower of Power showcases her true talent above the rest of covers
She is in Los Angeles now, Check her out
Yes she’s 14 now
You ought to listen to her Purple's Burn version. ;)
"One of the World's Greatest Drummers at 12 :: YOYOKA | Documentary of 2009-2022 [Japanese CC]" th-cam.com/video/ONY0qUWR5pQ/w-d-xo.html Here is an interview she did a couple days ago. If you don't want to watch the full video, watch her improvised solo (first 10 sec outtake) and at the end (Start at 16:11). "Meet the FIRST Pro Drummer To Play On A Cybertruck at C3 Jams - Yoyoka" th-cam.com/video/m_eS6zdEeXg/w-d-xo.html Thanks Again!
Wow! Appreciate all the info and I can’t wait to see where her career goes! Absolutely incredible!
Her recent cover of Colorado Bull Dog by Mr. Big is just fantastic in my opinion. Put it on your list. :)
She is such a phenomenal drummer and can’t wait to hear more! Have a great one!
@@Glen.Black. Oh wow! That’s super cool! The fact she is playing at such a high level for so many years at such a young age is wild! Phenomenal! 🥁
@@setonhillstudios Indeed! 😀
Listen to her cover of Sting - Seven Days. She might actually perform is better than Vinnie Colaiuta. It's mind bending.
Gotta watch her play Stray Cat Strut. Timing is incredible.
Oh snap! I bet it’s awesome! Thanks for the suggestion!
DUDE #YOYOKA IS AN AMERICAN NOW, LIVES IN CALIFORNIA!!! WOOO !!!!
Yoyoka has only continued to improve.
Can’t wait to hear more and what she sounds like today! Thanks for swinging by! 😁
Weekly!, right....lol
sugoi desu!
Indeed.
At 8 years old my drum set would've been covered with boogers. Lol
Haha 🤣😂 No doubt!
💯 Thanks so much! Definitely have to check that out!
This is six years old. Where have you been?
I guess under a rock 🤷🏻♂️ Glad I found her when I did though! She’s killer!
@@setonhillstudios
Better late than never.
Check out her Colorado bulldog cover
Wish she could do concert with Zep
That would be wild!!! 🔥🔥🔥
Watch her do Fool in The Rain
I bet that’s killer!
look up the ocean
Can You See Her WINGS
Oh cool! I have to check those videos out! She is definitely a prodigy and an absolutely phenomenal player! Cannot wait to hear more from her!
Kind words mate, but autistic? Not a fucking chance.
Check this other 8 year along side her 10 year old sister they are Radio Nube...........NIRVANA Y AIXA tocan intro de toxicity de System of a Down
its kind of absurd how hard she was already hitting at 8.
@@XcaptainXobliviousX Unreal!! 🔥

She got picked up by Pearl right after this came out.
Smart move by Pearl! She is killer!
No, to start pausing within seconds isn't worth watching.
It’s a reaction video - go to the original if you want it uninterrupted !

We ain’t for everyone. Feel free to find someone you enjoy. TH-cam is full of reactors with different styles and approaches ✌🏻
