All The Fertility Questions You’ve Been Scared To Ask with Dr Helen O’Neill

  • Dr Helen O’Neill is a leading expert in reproductive science, she’s a lecturer in reproductive and molecular genetics at University College London, she has a Masters in Prenatal Genetics and Fetal Medicine and a PhD in Stem Cell Biology. She is also the founder and CEO of Hertility Health, an award-winning bio-tech business specialising in fertility testing that has raised over £5 million since launch.
Fertility is obviously a hugely sensitive topic, but it’s also one that we never talk about for exactly that reason. When I started this podcast, I wanted it to cover the important topics that we never get taught, and I learnt so so much from Helen that I really couldn’t believe I haven’t researched or known before. If you’re thinking about switching off right now because you find the idea of fertility testing terrifying like I do, I promise you it’s worth sticking it out and listening to this one. However, if you are someone who is currently struggling to conceive, or finds fertility conversations particularly hard, this is an episode to skip.

As a cosmetic chemist I have to say avoiding all "hard to pronounce" ingredients is just fear mongering. Organic products are actually usually the most unstable and not very gentle on the skin. Science is not bad!! I've used plenty of healthy ingredients you will find in skincare ingredient lists that most people can't pronounce...like tocopherol acetate (vitamin E) or phenoxyethanol (preservative). Just because you don't know what it is doesn't mean it's bad!!

Loved this episode. Fertility is something that should be researched more and openly takes about. Many harmless ingredients (like water) can have complicated chemical names.

I’m glad there’s women are talking more about this subject. But even half way through the episode I haven’t learned anything new to take actionable steps to help with my fertility. She just points that everything will be answered if I take her test ‘Hertility’. I can see how this could be helpful for some, but there are also many other fertility doctors and fertility nutritionists that can help without a price. I learned way more from nutritionist Lily Nichols and fertility awareness educator Lisa Hendrickson-Jack than your guest here. ‘The fifth vital sign’ and ‘real food for fertility’ are great books if you’d like to take charge on your fertility through naturopathic methods and eating nutritious real food

She sent me to a specialist to do a more advanced ultrasound and she comfirmed it was endometriosis. The process was very quick and easy and I never had to do an opereration to know for sure. - ensure you eat enough protein and b vitamins
    - vitamins c & e, strong antioxidants that help with symptoms
    - lymphatic drainage : check out dr Perry’s big 6 exercises

I understand the message but I’m not entirely in agreement with the whole ‘don’t put anything in/on your body if you can’t pronounce the ingredients’. everything, even the simplest and cleanest ingredient, is a chemical at the end of the day, and its chemical name will likely be hard to pronounce for many people! of course it’s important to do your research but i don’t think this is a good rule of thumb. a better thing to focus on is whether skincare is dermatology approved, and things with a shorter ingredient list

You mention in your intro that women's bodies as a whole have been understudied or have been devalued in medical research. Yet you then offer your opinion and suggest that you reject the term woman as being just the biological female. That idea perpetuates the devaluing of women. We have fought so hard to be listened to, emancipated, and enter the world of work. We're still not seen an equals in many cultures. The fight and plight of woman throughout history has never been a linear success story. It's been one step forward and two steps back. Women share a wonderfully unique history that's embedded into our physical being. Diluting that is problematic and dangerous.
P.s I'd also like to mention that I enjoyed your interview nonetheless, you covered some interesting points. :)

Hertility is for women who wants to (pay out of pocket) get their results fast and for these doctors to help interpret their results.
Any good doctor that is willing to help will do this. I believe women should be an advocate for themselves and keep looking until you find a doctor that will listen to you and help get you the tests you need. There are good doctors out there.
Hertility is just another service that’s not covered by insurance.

    • @IAmContemporary
      @IAmContemporary 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Where I live insurance will not cover testing unless you’ve been trying for a while and a doctor establishes that there’s a reasonable suspicion of infertility. They will then test to look for the reason of your infertility.
I couldn’t just go to my GP and say “yo, I’ve had this IUD for two years and I’m definitely not looking to get pregnant now, but just out of curiosity: could you maybe to a full panel and tell me how my eggs are doing?”

I agree. Just creating unnecessary anxiety without the guidance of a medical professional.

I think overall as a society we have to look into why the first thing we go for is IVF and not adoption

Because people want a biological child…there is absolutely nothing wrong with that either . Also in Ireland …there are few to zero children up for adoption. So unless you have 100k€…forget it

@@emu9520 I think this whole genetic want is soo weird , like some aristocracy thing when people say they want a “lineage”. Also I understand adoption is expensive but some people spend way more on IVF / Surrogacy

@@mixmo437 In the Netherlands the costs for IVF are covered by insurance in certain cases. The costs for adoption are not.

@@IAmContemporary in the UK the first two tries are also covered. But still you see in America and other countries people doing tens rounds of IVF and spending a lot more than adaption

In Australia, it's cheaper to do IVF than adopt. Both options are extremely expensive and mentally taxing but at the end of the day I also want my own children with my husband and that's MY decision. Don't shame people for wanting their own biological children. IVF wasn't a first choice for me, it's been a last resort and nobody wants to do IVF after years of infertility. I would rather conceive naturally but unfortunately that's not my journey.

Great way to start out a serious and important interview with woke bullshit disclaimer about the word “woman”. Lame.

Waste of time if you’re actually into learning about this topic. Spend most the video discussing victimhood mentality. Mentioned testing for AMH and avoiding endocrine disrupters but otherwise mostly blabbing.
