When you see the official video of this back in the 70’s at the end the last image is Neil Peart smiling and wiping off his face. My psychology professor in college loved RUSH. I used to tease him that Peart was smiling at him saying: THERE YA GO MEAN GENE! We called him that because in statistics class we learned about the MODE, MEDIAN, AND MEAN of a group of numbers. So the whole class chant was MEAN MEAN GENE DONT GO TO THE EXTREME! Yes he let us call him by his first name!

I still get chills during a Lerxst in Wonderland, especially when Neil busts out the big flams behind the guitar solo. So great. And this version of La Villa had that extra awesome drum fill (specifically at 9:48). Loved it!

FUN! The most important thing. A few notes: as it became harder for Ged to hit the high notes in the 90s they tuned down a whole step for 2112 and Circumstances. Also; some fans complained about playing partial songs in medlies so they dropped having an opening act, took a 20 minute break and played for about 2:45 total. I saw them in 97 when they started that approach. They played all of 2112 for the first and last time on that tour.

I was always a bit torn on that. I liked getting more Rush, but I also really enjoyed the tours when Primus was opening for them.

@Ray Regis, man that t4E tour was the single most Rush EVER for the money. I’m pretty sure my ticket, although upper level near the rear of both UNO Lakefront Arena and The Omni in ATL, were no more than $35.00-$40.00! That being their first official ‘Evening With” format, they over extended themselves and did like a hour and twenty minutes in n the first half, and I know over two+ hours, maybe close to 2 1/2 in that second set. They corrected that cause every one after was like exactly 1 hour first and then 2 hours and maybe 5 or 10 minutes. All of 2112, brought back Natural Science, and that was on the 20th Anniversary of 2112. Neil had said during the Counterparts tour, he said quote, “You can’t go back” referring to the fact on that tour they played NOTHING before AFTK’s and a lot of fans were pretty miffed about that so I think they corrected that on the t4E run, and EVEN did that second summer leg from May ‘97 through July. Short but nice since the first leg was only Oct 19, 96 thru December about 18th or so maybe🤔

"An Evening Wasted With Rush", IIRC, was the first tour they dropped the opening acts for. Saw them in Sacramento for that one. Show was delayed due to power outage caused by an accident hitting a major power line...Still have my ticket stub for that one somewhere.

In a radio interview with Geddy and Alex it was explained why there was a deletion at the beginning of La Villa with the 'radioactive' warning signs. It didn't have anything to do with the context of Alex's spoken words but was just an error when recording the concert. For some reason Alex's mic line to the recorder desk was off so no audio was recorded. In post production they thought it would be a nice gag to include the warning sign & disclaimer to the video.

You make an excellent point about playing newer songs versus older songs. Even the ones I didn't care for on the original recordings sound great here. A lot of memories are coming back thanks to these reactions. I remember Alex taking over the vocals during "In the Mood," singing in a Cookie Monster voice: "Hey Cooo-Keee it's a quarter to eight..." Those lyrics kind of deserved such a treatment.

I liked it when they switched things up on the very old songs. The version of Working Man they played starting around Snakes & Arrows where it's reggae for the first verse and Alex plays a much crazier solo put new life into something we've heard a million times.

@@ischmidt yes, exactly. They actually started doing the reggae breakdown around '80 or '81, but they changed it over the years. Also loved the infamous "Closer to your house" jam at the end of "Closer to the Heart."Damn, I miss those guys.

So this is gonna be SUPER LONG. ASOH-the HYF tour, was my third time and third tour I saw them on consecutively. Ironically it was their worst performance I witnessed of them out of 16 in 31 years. Although still good, it was probably a off night they had, and the arena that I saw them in was only 3 years old but already had a national reputation for suck ass acoustics,(whole nother story) it cemented the fandom that became and remains fever pitched to this day.🤘Now the long part, it was Jan 1989, I was working construction(my second real job ever)and the strip mall we were working at had a Radio Shack(remember those)and walking by right there in the front window the were playing the VHS of ASOH! I went in said what’s this, saw the package went home that evening and to my local mall with record stores(remember those)think it was Camelot Music, they had a copy and I bought that MF’n VHS for either 29.99 or maybe 19.99, a lot for a 20yo earning 5.00 a hour doing hard labor(the concert ticket for that tour was like 14.50🤯😳😱Long story even longer, my dad had taken my best friend and I to see Rush first time in Oct ‘84 GUP tour, he had no idea, thought the opening band Fastway(who kicked ass btw)was Rush, so when Rush came out after them🤯😁👍! He was divorced from mom, had his own apartment across town, and a super killer hi-fi sound system, and one of the best newer Panasonic VHS player recorders. So, that’s where it was watched over and over AND OVER and wore slap out. I still actually have the tape, would probably break or disintegrate if it was put in a player(if I still had one, player that is)and my dad got SO TIRED OF SEEING IT and then one evening a friend of his stops by his place, they had been hanging out partying happy hour after work on a Friday or something, and sees the tape and goes WOW, you like Rush, 😊what’s this, can we put this on?😂and is obligated, AGAIN,😅 to sit through it at highest volume allowed/available 🤘😁😢for a hour and a half!❤❤Thats the way it was, 1989-1991ish in the life of a ASOH HI-FI VHS 📼!🤘🖖✌️🎹🥁🎸🎤👌👍⛪️🇨🇦🎼📺⚖️❤️❤️

They are having so much fun, just enjoying themselves while performing, believe me this comes across to the fans in the stands and as you can see they are also having a great time and loving it. Alex misses a cue, big wuff nobody cares, humans sometimes make mistakes it's a fact of life, they picked it up with good humour and carried on. As mentioned in a previous comment I had this on VHS since it was released but this is also a CD I have always had in my vehicles as it is a good collection of Rush music when you are looking for a fix. As stated by you and others in the comments I agree that the songs in this recording also sound punchier than the studio versions and have what I refer to as the "knees and elbows" (the small imperfections) that for me make live music interesting. There are a couple bands for me that I will take a live version of their songs over the studio versions because they are so much more dynamic and well-played and Rush is one of those bands (AC/DC is the other primary example that comes to mind).

Pre-detuned "2112", and you can hear why they had to go there. But it's great to see Alex in full goofball mode. The warning at the start of "La Villa" was a gag (it's an instrumental). Notice also that Neil switches to trad grip for a bit, well before his lessons with Freddie Gruber.
Yes, we turn the corner with Presto. It's an incremental improvement, however.

Been listening to Rush since 1980 - I'm 55 now. Like a lot of fans - their music is the soundtrack of my life. I wasn't originally into some of the pre - permanent waves albums and wasnt a huge fan of their stuff after Counterparts . However after the years have passed I started to really like their early stuff and some of the later - especially Clockwork Angels. I have really enjoyed sharing your journey. Haven't always agreed w you ( mission is awesome imo lol) but we all have different tastes. I think you giving us your honest reactions is refreshing compared to many reaction channels. I think I watch reaction videos because it's as close as an old guy like me can get to experiencing the music again for the 1st time. I grew up on the Beatles Led Zeppelin and Hendrix but like many types of music. Classical- Jazz - Rap - I can typically find something likable in any type. Just realized I tune in daily but not yet subscribed- will fix that. I really like your next one - Presto. Still listening to it frequently as I do with a lot of Rush. Even if I don't like a particular song I am blown away by the sheer talent. Neil and Geddy gets most props but I've always thought Alex as one of the best. Rush is just Amazing lol. Onto the 90s

I've always wondered about Alex coming in late after Overture. The show is a compilation of 2 nights...and you can see throughout the video that some of the far back shots from the previous night's performance don't match - including that Alex sometimes has a different coloured guitar. This is the case during 2112. The thing that I can't figure out is that he doesn't seem poised to change his guitar at the end of the song - he's not side stage or talking to his tech. Did someone run out and tell him to make the change? And was it actually because they knew it wouldn't match for the video?

Now I always go to the live versions of the synth period because they sound less compressed and got rejigged for the Replay boxset. Next four albums could challenge your ability to stay the distance especially as the albums got longer and you will have to resist the temptation to skip tracks. Odd how one track became a favourite among fans, but I couldn't see it, all I could hear was Pat Benatar's Love is a Battlefield, clue being we are young.

I much prefer the guitar sound of the Gibson ES-335 and the Fender Jazz or Rickenbacker bass. Those instruments give a deeper, richer and heavier wall of sound.
I was raising a family in the mid to late 80s and couldn't afford concert tickets, so in a way, I'm glad I missed this era live. I wasn't able to see Rush again until 1994 for their 'Counterparts' tour. And they kicked ass!!!

This is how they came back for the encore on the power windows tour. Since for me it was my very first rush concert, I can tell you how awesome it was that they played the songs at the end. As for Rush being on the ascend with presto? For some people yes. For me, NO! For my Canadian cousin that introduced me to rush, presto is easily his favorite album. For me, besides show don’t tell, I was like WTF is this? Knowing with rush you have to give multiple listens because every albums different, I did just that and gave it a shot. Just could not get into that album. It will be very interesting to hear your take on it.

Presto is next, it’s better than HYF, but it’s still in my bottom 5 Rush albums.

from wikipedia if you wanna know what alex mightve said during the muted section
"During the "La Villa Strangiato" section of the closing medley, Lifeson approaches his microphone and yells for several seconds. His words are silenced and a message appears onscreen telling viewers that his offensive speech has been censored. Lifeson actually said, "Singing is easy" and proceeded to make a series of strange random noises. Although the band has never confirmed what (if anything) Lifeson said, they have admitted that the censorship was a joke.[citation needed]"
