That part you were talking about is from cartoons. It’s a song called powerhouse. It’s from the 40s or something. They didn’t copy note for note. I want to say it played on a few episodes of Marvin the Martian with bugs bunny.

La Villa Strangiato is Rush's first of several instrumental tracks and in my opinion their best. Subtitled "An Exercise in Self-Indulgence" it is based on nightmares of Alex. The song has 12 parts and combines an eclectic and dizzying variety of musical styles and time changes. It was played live regularly since its realease and later on Alex would often add comical stream of conscious commentary to it. They even did a "polka" into for it on the Time Machine Tour in 2010-2011.

Agreed! Hemisphere's is their finest work. But when I first heard it, I thought it was weird.. I had to listen to it a few more times before I "got it". Now, if I had to live the rest of my life on a deserted island, and I could only bring one album, it would be Hemispheres, hands down.

They really came into their own here. A masterpiece. A section of the song nicked from a chart for a thirties movie, (if memory serves me right). And even though it wasn't required to do so, Rush sent a royalty check to the estate of the late composers heirs. "No Cinderella Man on this record." lmao

Good statement. The dynasty of Rush begins, it does, flowders a bit for me with Presto and Roll the Bones. La Villa! Been playing guitar for over 40 years and still of course can't play it like Alex. Permanent Waves did it for me as a 16 ish year old it was so out of this world not one laim track. Ye I'm biased cus it's one of my favorite Rush albums. Natural science!!!! And by the way you give the best non biased! Rush reactions 👍

Not too sure what's going to impress you - I think you've set your bar a bit too high.
Hemispheres is a fucking masterpiece and you will realise this in years to come.
Permanent Waves is even better - they just get better and better

I think people fail to realize Alex Lifeson was only 25 years old at the recording of Hemispheres. So from 1973 to 1978 Alex has wrote/played/recorded 6 studio albums in that short time. Alex is the main song writer for the songs. Even Geddy admits in interviews that Alex comes up with the ideas and music. Quite amazing for a 25 year old in 1978. Also Alex plays two instruments at the same time. Alex plays Guitar and Taurus pedals for bass and synthesizers at the same time. So when you here him doing only a rhythm and not much soloing is because he is play the Taurus pedals while still playing guitar. Hello anybody there?

    • @HansMcGruber
      @HansMcGruber ปีที่แล้ว +2

Alex was not the main writer of Rush material. Geddy and Alex contributed equally, building on each others musical ideas. Many Rush songs were born from Geddy originally writing them on acoustic guitar, some on bass, and later on keys. Geddy also wrote all the vocal melodies. There was no lead player in this band, they all contributed equally, and one of the reasons they were so great.

One nice thing about Rush (Yes, Genesis ect) there's something for many different tastes, times, seasons.
I think you'll like PWs as well.
From Farwell to Kings to Signals depending on preference and time of life most can pick a favorite Rush album.
And like many the top 3-5 change by the year or decade of life.

  • @yes_head
    @yes_head 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Geddy putting his fancy new Oberheim OB-X to work in the intro (and another wicked fun bass part.) But again, what other hard rock band in 1978 was doing *anything* like this? I think this song single-handed inspired an entire new generation of young musicians to push themselves beyond "stagnant musical forms" (to quote Steve Hackett.) And to get back to the Alex topic, this is arguably his finest guitar solo of all time. At least it seems to be the one later guitarists always name check. And yeah, you need to hear the album again. And again. And again... 😄
But as I said earlier, this is where they enter the height of their powers, which IMO lasts through the Signals album. If you do appreciate more song-oriented stuff, then I'm guessing you'll like pretty much everything after this more. This is the peak of their progressive rock period. There will still be instrumentals after this, but no more side-long epics.

At some point, I notice you don’t say they sound Zeppelinesque any more. The last few albums it becomes clear that Rush turned into their very own sound. There is no mistaking them for anyone else.

  • @graciefolden2359
    @graciefolden2359 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I have always thought it was weird that, in the studio recording, the most prominent up front sound is Neil's snare and hi-hat with Alex's guitar in back at times. Perhaps they were adding more division between the rhythm and lead guitar parts with lead acting more as the lyricist in the song. Awesome song either way, recorded or live.

As mentioned below, that cartoon section was from “powerhouse” by Raymond Scott. The band didn’t credit him on the song, so years later the Scott estate asked for payment for using it. However, the statute of limitations had expired, so the band was off the hook legally, but the band still sent a payment to the estate as a “penance” payment. I love how much class these guys have! I like that story. The guitar solos are smoking on this one…one of his best. Thanks!

If Rush is playing 3 songs at my backyard BBQ this is the closer...my opinion is Justin like some things Rush is doing and understands the level of musicianship and respects this band...and no one gets it completely with first listens to Rush...so us diehards should not expect him to feel what we feel...after decades of loyal worship...I think we will keep getting...this is cool...I dig it...interesting...recorded well...I enjoy the comments from the fellow Rush diehards the most...but I am along for the ride..who knows Justin may go gaga over the synth era!

This is my favourite track on the album. This album was the end of the extra-long progginess. It really could have been disc two in a double with FTK.
What I’ve always considered to be the golden age of Rush begins next week, and will continue for most of August.

  • @charlieYTonly

Rush used to play this for their encore. What band can get away with a 9 minute instrumental during what is supposed to be the highlight of the night? I'm sure some of it was to allow Geddy freedom to roam the stage and take pressure off his voice but Rush fans will pretty much follow Rush anywhere.
And again, this song demonstrates all the proggyness you want in prog but it still is listenable with great riffs. You don't need to understand the time signature changes or the harmonic gymnastics to "get it". It just sounds good.
This song has my favorite bass solo from Geddy and the drums are, of course, just awesome throughout. But that first Alex guitar solo is so sublime. Just perfect.

Fairly certain that one bit is from Looney Tunes Bugs Bunny. Where he get bopped on the head and does a funky staggered walk. That's how remember it! There was a time when before leaving for school, had to have my shot of Bugs Bunny. Then there was a time before school where I wasn't going in until I heard the Spirit of Radio. Bugs was a bad ass by the way.

A very fair assessment, Rush and Hemispheres does require more than one listen, La Villa Strangiato will always be a standout for me. FYI, Rush recorded these two albums in Wales for inspiration, they needed something different and Wales gave them that. Later in their career they will record in the Lake Placid area, please remember Canada and the United States are family, I personally have family in the U.S. and we need to stand and support each other. Looking forward to the next album on the list....Permanent Waves.

A couple things about this one: Alex Lifeson used a guitar synthesizer on it, they were very new unusual and not very prominent whatsoever; they tried to record it in one take, AND COULD’NT, and finally conceded in mixing three takes to do it. Which is weird cause they play it in its entirety live without a problem. And finally, it’s sub titled(A Exercise in Self-Indulgence)which to me is the conceited Canadian polite way of saying “Look what we can do, and how good we can play, and you can’t” 😳🤔😉😂🤘🖖✌️👍👌🥇🇨🇦🥁🎸🎹🎤

Yes, again sometimes with Rush it takes a few listens. What amazes me about all three of these guys is their dedication to precision and attention to detail when they did these songs live. Even they would admit to not being perfect, but they were close, and usually the only time they played songs differently, it was intentional for improvisation. Now, for next album, "Permanent Waves," best song, (IMHO) is "Natural Science."

They said this album "Broke the camels back" with the longer chapter songs. I consider it the last of an Era. From here they pump out more "commercial" offerings which is a great thing cause they did it their own way. They produced some of the greatest and complex commercial tracks in the next few albums and they deserved it. They stay true to themselves and just kick more ass.

Keep doing what you’re doing, Justin. Love it! As far as everyone’s “Rush Dynasty,” goes, for me it starts with Permanent Waves and doesn’t end for a good stretch after.

You are absolutely gonna like permanent waves better. I dare say Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures will lead you into Signals which will encapsulate, in my opinion, their catchy songwriting phase at their peak.

The section you're wondering about is Raymond Scott's "Powerhouse", composed in the 30s and used occasionally in Warner Brother's cartoons, and bands other than Rush. Devo and They Might be Giants also used it. The band voluntarily settled with the composer when approached about the violation. I guess they thought it was public domain.

I could defend this one as my favorite Rush "thing" but I always find a few repetitions of the Strangiato theme could be omitted and cut a minute off, whether listening or playing it.

Unless I'm mistaken, this is their first instrumental. There were instrumental sections of larger pieces ("Overture" and "Grand Finale" from 2112, for example), but nothing that was fully standalone. They had YYZ on Moving Pictures, but then they didn't do instrumentals again for a long while. When they were recording "Roll the Bones" for 1991, Neil put his foot down and said he wasn't going to write any more lyrics until they wrote another instrumental. That's when they broke the streak and wrote "Where's my Thing?" Now it's on to Permanent Waves. That's one of my favorite albums from them, sharing the top-three spot with A Farewell to Kings and Vapor Trails. So many good songs on that album!

I think that I also prefer A Farewell to Kings, but just ever so slightly. Hemispheres has such a crisp sound to it, you can tell they put a ton of work into the production of the record...I love how the guys pushed themselves a bit more with this album, a lot of really fantastic music. I think if you like A Farewell to Kings then you'll probably like Permanent Waves...I think they're similar in a lot of ways, but with Permanent Waves being a little more tight and cleaned up. You're in the middle of my favorite era of Rush (A Farewell to Kings through Signals), so I'm super pumped for these next few albums! Once you've gotten through Moving Pictures, you should take a listen to the Exit Stage Left live album, really great stuff.

Remember a couple of things: One no tribute band can or will ever do justice to RUSH no matter who they are or how good they think they play. Second RUSH played it first and no one can else can take that from them. Finally RUSH play it best: Album in and out decade after decade after decade. In summary THEY ARE THE KINGS OF PROGRESSIVE ROCK BAR NONE!

Hemispheres was the first Rush music I heard. I was 16 at the time and had been all over the place in my musical tastes (my parents didn't really listen to music very much) and I was currently in my Beatles phase. The whole album blew my mind and now, 44 years later, I can remember what it felt like to hear it that first time. As far as La Villa Strangiato goes, the live performances are all great (I've seen it numerous times live), but my favorite remains the album version. To comments about Alex being underrated, I don't think he is - he's not a shredder or the greatest in the world, and that's OK. He was the perfect guitarist for Rush and was an integral part of the Rush sound. Rush without Alex would be like The Beatles without Ringo. Keep on going with the straight up reactions and reviews - Permanent Waves starts a distinct new era in the Rush trajectory.

Enjoying FWTK more is valid. Maybe liking Hempisheres more requires being an obsessive teenager about it. You know, listening everyday and trying to memorize it just because.

This album is the last hurrah for them composition wise. they never did another album such as Hemispheres, because they took their skills to the limit... but I'm sure glad they did!

I actually like A Farewell to Kings better (but just by a hair). I mean, I think that Hemispheres was more polished, but I really like the edge that A Farewell to Kings has that this doesn't quite have. That said, La Villa Strangiato is just an amazing instrumental--for me, it is neck and neck with YYZ as far as great Rush instrumentsl. The two more "normal" songs really preview what Rush will do in the next few albums, with the tight and concise song-writing (although Permanent Waves does have Natural Science and Moving Pictures has The Camera Eyes - which are both around 10 minutes long).
Ironically, Rush was a band that I kind of resisted getting to for the first few years of high school. It is hard to say why (especially since I was big into Kansas, Asia, and a few other prog bands). There was something about some of the fans that made me avoid them as a contrarian (I think I still do that with bands, sometimes). However, once I started listening to them, they really drew me in. Kind of the opposite of getting into a band because of some really good hooks just to get sick of them later. Anyway, I hope you'll listen to these albums a few more times, at least, now that people are sending you their vinyl--just don't forget about Louis Armstrong ;-)

Plus that bass bit that lit you up. :)

At 25 Moving Pictures, Signals, Caress of Steel were top three.
At 27 it was Permanent Waves, Rush and Hemispheres.
    About 35/40 - Signals, 2112, Permanent Waves/Counterparts.
    At 55 it was Counterparts,
Snakes and Arrows, Caress of Steel.

On this album, and particularly this track, Rush brought complexity and tightness to a new level. It's hard enough to record a simple song in the studio. Now assemble three musical maestros who demonstrate the mastery of their instruments. After accomplishing this album, they realized that it might make more sense to record more radio-friendly songs. Thus "The Spirit of Radio". Rush would still stick a musical middle finger to the industry by tight and complex transitions. Rush is popular not only because their songs show some sort of rebel against the mainstream, but their music is treated the same way. The "Lerxt in Wonderland" guitar solo inspired many guitarists in their solo writing.

This is just an epic song! They really wrote beyond their capabilities on this one. It took them longer to record this one song than the entire album of "Fly by Night". They tried for 10 days to record this in one take, but ended up admitting defeat and had to do it in 3 parts. This is one of the very few songs Neil is penned with writing the music. Recording this album just about killed them. They literally said "we are not doing an album like this any more!" Hence... "Permanent Waves"! They really get good at arranging on that album and thats when you start seeing the more compact, (but still just as complicated,) arrangements. Looking forward to next week! Be well and God bless... from Texas!!

Ah Justin, Justin , Justin…I just don’t know. Alex was spectacular on La Villa. Yeah I’m reserving judgement here and we’ll see where we are after Permanent Waves. A lot of very complex stuff on that one too and more song oriented so you should like it better…perhaps. There’s just no telling with you, but it’s all about opinions and you’re entitled to yours. I’m a drummer so of course I like just about anything they do.He’s a major influence on my playing and there’s stuff I learned from him that I still use all the time, so I guess it’s more personal for me because of that.

Man I can't wait for you to get to their "Test for echo" album. Thats my personal favorite, and to me, it's their most refined and underrated work. This really is a great project you chose to take on, and it's a cool perspective to see a base player critique Geddy and the band as a whole.

This record felt like a little bit like an anomaly, and I think that’s because it was short. If it had one more song, it probably would have felt more “normal.” It definitely grows on you, though.

not that would encourage immorality, but you can’t appreciate Hemispheres, unless you’re stoned.
Permanent Waves is great, Moving Pictures is what Neil described as the Album when Rush became Rush. which is really quite a statement considering it came in the wake of 2112 , and Xanadu which is arguable their best song.

I find myself staring at the roll of toilet paper on your desk and asking myself:
Is that the same roll as always? Why doesn't the count seem to go down? Looks like single ply unquilted, but hard to tell. And most importantly, why is there a toilet paper roll on the desk?
