I was watching a Dodger game on tv a couple of years ago. The Dodgers had a Japanese player who last name was Hu. He got a single. While standing on first base, Vin Scully said "Folks I can finally say it" "Hu's on first"."

    • @klandersen42

just goes to show that you don't need to cuss or insult people to be funny. Today's comedians need to study these guys along with the other old Vaudeville acts and early 20th century comedy. Problem is for the last 30, 40 or so years kids don't like anything older than 5-10 years old or things from the older generations. It isn't cool or hip to like things from your parents generation or earlier.

Anything that was to be shown on film to the public had to pass censorship standards. Even saying "Dam" was rarely allowed, which is why he said "darn it". At other venues comics did use swear words and make "naughty" jokes. My parent's went to Las Vegas to see one of their favorite comics. He was a regular on the Dick Van Dyke Show. They ended up being appalled because his live act was filled with cussing and swearing. I don't know if Abbott and Costello got down and dirty live, but many did. Actually today because of cellphones comics don't have the freedom to say whatever they want in their live acts that previous generations had.

This was many decades before my time, but it still is funny because of their sheer talent and the hard work they had previously engaged in to get the timing down so perfectly.
This didn't happen by accident, only by lots of repetition until they deemed it good enough to do in front of an audience.
Nothing in that performance is easy to master, ESPECIALLY the talent for making it look completely spontaneous and effortless.
Did you notice...not a single bad word, not a single cringy reference, not a single put down of anyone. No audience member was targeted to be embarrassed against their will.
And it is just as fresh and funny today as the day it was filmed.
That, right there, is talent, class and hard work put together. It is an example of why "the good old days" are referred to as such.
