Justin, We're a Rush Family of Brother's & Sister. I own Beyond the Lighted Stage. Love this look into how the Rush came to be and their individual personalities. Mary Weinrib, Geddy's Mom such a sweet woman. She passed away on July 2nd, 2021, at the age of 95.

Billy Corgan's comments are a perfect lead-in to the start of the doc...and it's interesting that this came out as Rush had finally started to gain some of that notice that Corgan spoke of. The films Fanboys and I Love You, Man came out in 2009 and several TV shows referenced Rush around this time. Then the R&R HOF induction (Blah, Blah, Blah) in 2013. I know the band members didn't really care, but as a fan it was nice to see.

Being the same age as Alex and Geddy I remember going to high school and community club dances and having bands playing but I am from Winnipeg not Toronto so I got to see the Guess Who at dances. That is what it was like back then.
Rush really got an excellent manager in Ray Daniels. He was honest and really helped in promoting the band. That wasn't always the case unfortunately for a lot of bands.
I read Anthem Rush in the 70's
and although all three of them Including Neil dropped out of high school Alex did go back and finished his grade 12

This was cool. Great documentary. We had "Chromey" on display at the Marcus Theaters in Addison Il. Each showing sold out. I pulled some strings to get 97.9 WLUP-FM ("The LOOP") to live broadcast in the lobby. Because of the noise we created, the Theater Manager gave away tons of free passes. She said "I don't care how many I give out, this is just too cool." I ended up getting the official movie poster in the end. Lots of money was raised for charity. Thanks again for posting this. These videos bring back great memories every time. Glad you're enjoying yourself! Rush on! Carry On! These are the BEST reaction vids on YT. Fun to watch.

I just love the line from Geddy's at the end about his mom clueing into what he's been doing all this time: "Ah -- you're an *entertainer*!" 😄 And yeah, it was very different back then because there were lots of places where bands could play live music. It was still that way well into the early 1980's, but at some point the economics changed and clubs shifted to DJ's instead of live bands. I remember that happening in the part of the Bay Area I was living in and it seemed like the number of live music venues was cut in half almost overnight.

In a previous video you mentioned that Geddy was the driving/controlling force in the band. In effect the boss. I agree with that. It’s interesting in this documentary it’s clearly Alex’ and John’s band and they invited Geddy to fill in for some shows and he stayed. Then became the dominant member. I wouldn’t call him domineering but it seems clear to me all along that he’s kind of the leader.

Geddy and Neil both dropped out, it seems that Alex did finish - "Educationally, Geddy found that school tended to be boring, and occupied too much of his time, taking away from his musical interest. Finally at Grade Eleven he decided to leave school and join Rush as a full time career, little knowing the group would achieve the success they have to date. His only regret is that he didn't continue his studies of English and History, two subjects in which he was most interested. Alex was a Grade Twelve honour graduate. Neil like Geddy, left school around the same time prior to graduation for much the same reasons." Music Canada Quarterly, March 1975
Alex also says in a later interview "After *I finished high school* the band really started happening." (because the drinking age was lowered that summer giving them access to bar gigs).

This is exactly what The Warning went through as young artists. Those shows like American Idol, Glee and Disney all wanted to sign them, but they turned all of them down flat, because they all wanted to change the band and turn them into a marketing vehicle and make them something that they're not. They said they would rather play for 12 people playing what they like rather than play for 12,000 playing something that isn't representative of who they really are. Good on them! Look at them now.

I hadn't watched this in quite some time, but the latest time had been when Rush were still going, and so it had really annoyed me that Jack Black, Trent Reznor, Billy Pumpkin and the other guys kept talking about them in the Past Tense; They _were_ this, and they _were_ that... Sadly, watching it again now that Neil's gone and Rush had played their last show already in 2015, it's way more appropriate 😌
