Organized filament, ah…so satisfying. You can't beat the price too!
It has gone up some and with the RepRack now it's definitely more difficult BUT for those that can't screw into walls, this is still a great option.
It's a great solution and I'm close to pulling the trigger. I'd like them to be stackable though, and I don't think the plastic pipes at the corners are going to hold up all that well for this purpose. But each maker has different space and needs. I can't go very wide, but I can go tall... oh but there's also the ceiling. But thanks for the inspiration - these are great for under-desk filament storage, so I'll definitely keep that in mind!
Nice idea. Densely packed filament. In bags is a must, so that works. I do hate plastic storage, very wobbly. Looking forward to your real solution /project
It's a good cheap solution especially for those space constrained with only a few spools. It's not realistic for big operations like this but it's much better than the old system for usage.
Holy crap, this is brilliant. Perfect for what I need. Thanks.
RIGHT!?!?!?
Great find👍😃
Thank you!
Great storage idea,. Will get me some for sure even though these are only rated for 6 kg.
I just noticed my old 28" (ID) (9 spool )wide, 5 tier book shelf that's 12" high /shelf (full of dusty old university books) will be great for storing the boxed spools. That's 12 spools/shelf x 5=60 spools. I can get an extra 3 spools/shelf on top of the 9 wide=12/shelf. Should make the wife happy once all these Amazon boxes cleaned up
I have had more than double that on them since we filmed that video with no issues, so, you know, grain of salt?
Great find I'll be buying a couple of those.
Are your in florida? Do you get moisture problems with pla? I'm on a peninsula surrounded by sea, (a lot colder than florida), my pla gets stringy after a month or so in open air.
Huh it seems my reply did not take..
I am in Florida, Tampa to be reasonably specific!
We do not see many issues with PLA, with ambient around 40% it seems fine. But air conditioning helps that. Any exotics are in dry bags though! PETG does tend to string a bit
I built a filament storage rack out of a few 1x2s and it is super sturdy and works great! It only cost me $8-10.
That will be the next project once my back is fixed, likely 1x4's and 1x2's
@@3DMusketeers nice!
I remember seeing on Prusa Printers fixtures for connecting 1x1's to make a filament storage rack. As I recall the fixtures hold the lumber at 45° so the rolls are resting against the flat surfaces of the lumber instead of on the corners.
Awesome 👌 just picked up 3 for 30$. Can't beat that
Good buy!
This works for my setup, I thought of doing printed bracket and 1/2" conduit on the wall, but that doesn't really work for my setup, it could, but on the floor under the bench would be better. If I do change storage, I'm sure I can find a use for these things with something else, I bought 2 of them for now.
If you want wall brackets, the Rep Rack is my favorite.
Thanks for this! Ikea is awesome stuff for what it is. Have a lot of their furniture as it is now.
It gets the job done and is much easier than doing it yourself (unless you enjoy that kind of thing..)
@@3DMusketeers if it works it works. Ordered three just now. Tampa IKEA is a 90 minute drive for me haha I appreciate the fast replies. You are awesome. I love seeing new ways to do things and tips from others experience as I continue to learn and grow with this industry.
Wait.. did I know you were in Tampa-ish?
@@3DMusketeers I commented on another video that I realized I was only an hour and 20 north of you. I’m in Citrus County.
Ah ok. I forget who says what lol. You'll be driving right by the shop on the way down. And it's IKEA, it's just fun!
genius, thank you.
heck yeah!
Would be interesting to know if half of this can fit under my ikea lack printer housing. Could you measure from the bottom up to the top of the middle tray?
I'm sure I can get the other measurements off ikea, like lenght. But 7x2 spools fit under the lack table without the vesken storages, so it may work.
Roughly 16 inches from wheels to top of the second shelf. That is WITHOUT filament on it.
It is likely not as space efficient, but it is certainly nicer looking and easier to use than digging through spools
@@3DMusketeers Thx. With small tpu feet they will barely fit, so yeah with feet raising it by like 5 cm this will work. Also length of the vesken is 54cm and ikea lack is 55x55cm. 2 side by side should also fit between the lack legs. Of course without spools on the second shelf, so space for "only" 2x6-7 spools in total but since that space would be wasted otherwise this is great. On filament change just pull out a vesken and change spool, push back and done :)
That was my thing too. I had over 130 spools there previously but it was haphazard at best, was a pain to bend down to search, etc. This is not as space efficient but it works so well.
design and print a swatch rack that hangs on the end of each shelf to hold swatches of the spools in the rack.
That means I have to put them all back in the same spaces lol
i love that you gave the exact time the sticker was done lol
Some people do not like the peels, others live for it. We want to provide for both sides lol
@@3DMusketeers sticker peeling is life lol
That one was a bit rough, but yes.
So if you buy 2 you can make it one tall tower?
Not sure if the wheels would survive but you could try!
absolutely gotta buy 2 of these for my little shop where space is a big issue, can them be used like a stack? i mean place 2 together one over the another or will be too much weight?
Technically you can, but yeah the weight I have no clue..
@@3DMusketeers excellent, thank you so much!
Absolutely! I know you can put 18kg on it without issues, so there is that. I have considered more shelves, but I promise those wheels wont last lol
Yeah, the wheels are the biggest issue, did forget about them😅 I will try with mine when I purchased them, in case of, buy strongers wheels or simply let it stationary like all will be stacked
wheels are non standard :/
Why can you only use the top rack for filament if the shelf is over 30 inches?
Because under that the top rack won't hold spools. The shelf above it would hit it. That's the case for me. So I store tools up there lol
Can they be stacked 2 high?
In theory, but I wouldn't install the wheels then. If you have that much vertical space maybe a reprack is best
Our apartment is under 700sq ft, so this is a great option for me!
YES! amazing for small spaces! Our printers are mostly housed in a 170sq ft office right now! Mind you, I could have more on the shelf that WAS there, but it was nowhere near as efficient, which is what matters more to me.
Where are these from?
Ikea. They are the vesken cart (link is in description) :)
What is the total height of the vesks including coils on the top floor?
Depends on your spool size actually. If you can get me a diameter of your spools I will find one that is close and get the measurement for you!
@@3DMusketeers The spool is 20 cm diameter
looks about 88cm tall with the 3rd spool on there at the 20cm diameter
@@3DMusketeers Thanks so much for measuring. Have 89/90 cm so should just manage to use 3 high
Glad we could help! Yeah I didnt have the space, so I use the top bin as, well, a bin. I can put 2 spools laying down on it too if I need. It works for us really.
I think I'd put a strip of double-sided tape up on the top shelf with a sample of each filament in the rack.
As long as you don't screw it up like I likely would LOL! So many spools means they go where there's space.
I have 40 rolls of filament in three of these, and they work great! The only downside is they were $14.99 each.
Yeah the price has been going up unfortunately, but it was $9.99 when we made the video lol. Still worth it at $15 IMO. Much easier and frankly better looking than having it all on a shelf
@@3DMusketeers agreed! Thank you for pointing them out!
One day soon, when I get the shop back together, we may do a DIY one, will see if it works better!
Can’t you just take that one apart and put one more row on the other one instead stack it?
you can, but be careful with the wheels :)
What is this content? Did I really just watch him setup an ikea shelf? Yes obviously you can put your filament on a shelf… was hoping for a solution that mods encloses this and keeps it dry…
If you really thought something like that could be done for so cheap I think you have wrong expectations for costs in this industry.
If you wanted to fully enclose this I would recommend a different solution, likely DIY, where the spools fit without any stick out. That stick out would make it insanely hard to enclose easily. Mind you, filament is not as susceptible to moisture as you may think.. Even here in FL we leave spools out and they are fine. Sure, after a few months a bit of a touch up in a dryer would not hurt, but it is not like they quickly degrade like people want you to believe.
If you live anywhere above the snow line right now, your filament is dry enough LOL. For exotics like nylon and such, we do store in individual dry bags and dry AT LEAST 12 hours prior to printing to be safe. That practice I do not think would change.
The price focus of video is a fair point, I just dont feel I need content of putting it together. I generally have had issues with PETG not printing well and my research let me to believe reason was it needed to be dried, however I haven't had issue with PLA in generally, but planning on moving things to a garage, where I may be more worried about moister in air, but could be wrong to worry? Anyways, thanks for taking time to write a reply.
I don't have an IKEA near me...
You can have them ship to you, but yeah, that is a bummer, it is an experience to go there for sure!
Speaking from experience, be VERY careful with “fixing your back” if you’re considering surgery, you may want to speak to me in private first (hopefully if you went ahead everything went well).
No surgery yet, but if you want, send an email to the channel email and I will look out for it and we can get a talkin the books.
I am looking at neurosurgery for my spine
now $14.99 but still a great idea
It was less when we first made the video. Yay inflation lol. Guess I need to update the title?
@@3DMusketeers lol probably a good idea
Fair.. I'll do that!
dam it double in price!
Has it gone up again?!?!
loosk liek 24 spools to me lol
varies on spool thickness ;)
Ikea seems to have dropped the price back to $9.99, at least as of today - 7/8/2024.
NICE!! I will update the title again lol
As of 1/1/24 it's $9.99
oh sweet!!
Annoyingly, ikea sell this for £10 36% higher than the us dollar price , thabks ikea!
BUMMER! Sorry to hear that! But still, a good value if you can put all 18 spools, right?
you ikea shoppers kill me lol ..Ikea is no where near me sadly
sorry man!
