Y'all in the 3dprinting space that are serving industry need to add NRE to your quotes. NRE (non-recurring engineering) is a line item in 3dprinting encompass the time you spend setting up a file to be VIABLE for print. So in other words, when a client gives your a stl, sldprt, or step (whatever) you have to take time to slice the file, load the filament, test the print, swap nozzles, and so forth. That time is money. Once you have a working gcode, then you're set and can charge them per part going forward, but don't neglect the time you take to set a part up!

Great advice, and different from many of the other "how to start..." videos.
I got into 3D printing because I wanted to start a business. At first, it was to help me write by creating my own dungeon tiles, I had a massive head injury so I need to visually see a layout in order to write LITrpg/Dungeoncore. It is funny because I then had to learn Blender for a year in order to make my tiles, before I found out about free versions. I later planned on using my printers for custom molds for wax melts and selling those.
Oh well, nothing came of it due to several unfortunate things, but at least I learned a few new skills these last couple of years.

I really appreciate the way you break everything you cover down in this video. Very clear and practical! As an individual looking to enter the additive manufacturing industry from more traditional environments, it is really nice to hear someone speak with a balance between excitement over the opportunities and the frustration over the expected challenges.
I'm really hoping to work with a leader/team driven by the kind of mindset you display. So, I'm going to send you guys my resume and some background information regarding the value I believe I can bring to the crew!
Again, I sincerely appreciate how well organized and detailed the information in this video was! 2 of my 4 cats legitimately tried to climb into the empty bed towards the beginning of the video, and were very jealous of Victoria when she appeared in it.

I had a great experience with my Bambu P1P, until I had a couple clogs. I think it's the cheap filament, but having to clear a clog with an allen wrench is insane. Then yesterday it threw a error code for "toolhead malfunction" and will no longer heat up the hotend. Bed will heat, but not the hotend. I had to faceplate off and turned the printer on, and it jerked the faceplate around when it moved, and now the error.

Just bought a Bambu Lab mini two weeks ago, kids been running it 24/7. Only time we get failed prints is because of the tangles from the cheap filaments spools we bought. The printer just keeps jugging on and works flawlessly. We'll probably get a P1S next, and keeps adding more to start our small printing business during this summer.

This is really cool video, thanks for making it! I especially enjoyed the section which dealt with mental health and its importance. I've been running my own business since 2016, it was pretty much halted to zero once COVID crisis hit. After that, I've been trying to develop the business into direction which would be more helpful for my (already poor pre-COVID) time management. Same as me. My Sovol SV06 Plus has been nothing but a nightmare. The constant PSU cooling-fan is also driving me nuts. Fan running maximum even when the printer is idle. I guess this is what happens when a company cheap out on components.
I believe my printer bed came warped from factory. I have yet to be able to have a nice first layer, after 3 months of ownership, with this printer. I even did the Silicon modification to the bed screws. Nothing.... The stock firmware was pretty trash as well. Every time I did Z align, with a piece of paper, I would get a different result when I pressed save. Sometimes after pressing save the nozzle would be buried into the bed, and sometimes it would have a hand-size clearance between the bed and the nozzle.
Oh yeah, when I was unscrewing the bed -> carriage to do the Silicon mod I found out that one of the carriage screw holes had stripped threads. Nice QC Sovol! So I have replaced that screw with a longer one, since it has some thread left at the bottom. My printer is such a hack.
I also replaced the extruder since the previous was faulty, and would keep clogging for no reason. Waited almost 1 month for it to arrive from China.
I bit the bullet, and migrated to Klipper. Bear in mind this is my first 3D printer. I had hoped it would be somewhat plug and play. Oh boy, I should never had followed the hype-train of the next "Prusa killer" on Reddit.
At least the Klipper migration fixed my Z align issue. But... The bed warp haunts me to this day. I cannot get a good mesh through Klipper no matter how hard I try. Even if the mesh shows my bed is flat then, for some reason, it is way below the 0 offset, and my printer prints in the air at the corners. SCREWS_TILT_CALCULATE reports no screw needs to be adjusted.
Also Sovol "support" is non existing. They literally have a reply cadence of 3-5 days. So most of the time my printer is just collecting dust. I am either waiting for replies or spare-parts being shipped from China.
I believe I would need to order a new carriage, and bed from Sovol. But to be honest, I have been debating with my self if I should just star my Sovol printer in a recreated Office Space printer smashing scene, and order a Prusa MK4 or Bambu instead.
I know those printers may also have issues. But at least they are not made from the cheapest materials possible.
I think Sovol, like many of its competitors, are just here for the money grab. They are too busy shooting out new models, and forgetting about supporting the previous models. Their hardware is closed source, just like their Volcano nozzle, so you are forced to be dependent on them. I hate it!

Lastly SV06- yeah cooling was bad.. super bad.. but only pringitng air nozzle so that it cools other side made huge difference.. running at ~50mm speeds. Slow.. but works. People in general think everything comes with strings attached and having a high iq, an engineering degree and severe ptsd (which is managed as well as itll ever be). As soon as people find out about how bad my ptsd is i get taken advantage of because i am generous with my high disposable income and pass me off as a retard due to slight social awkwardness im trying to get over by socializing. @3DMusketeers if you ever want to hear a tale about something that happened to me. Something I tell few people as most fear for my well being in telling the tale but I do it as I've never heard of it happening to anyone. It's not the worst thing to ever to to me (or anyone who has experienced multiple trauma) but it's not something I've ever heard of before. It's not the typical thing and I've lived through much worse but it's unique and something about the human condition I've never understood. It won't gross you out but you'll be left scratching your head. The easy answer is usually the most obvious but as someone who it happened to, I like getting other's perspective on it. Not as a way to seek pity but what normal people think of it. I've reconciled the fact I'll never understand. Only about 5 people have ever wanted to hear about it because most people don't believe it will be the type of thing that happened to altar boys for lack of a better description (and to keep this pg). Anyone who wants to email me if they're curious about human nature and like to think of why people do weird things I'm not embarrassed to retell the tale. I demand no pity as well but only offer to tell the 4 paragraph story to provoke curiosity in people and require no reply. Many worse things have happened to me and are stories we hear all too often but this one story I've never heard of before.
If someone reads this in a year and want to hear about it just email me and refer to reading this message. I don't feel like a victim, nor do I expect to be pitied. It's just a story. If I wanted attention I'd have a youtube channel that makes people feel like they never want to play guitar again haha. I'm not conceited but it's the one thing I know I'm better than most at. I believe people all have a talent which make them unique (in so much as the over 7 billion people on earth an individual can be unique lol).

I would never recommend some brands in 2023. If a printer is reliable you should NOT need to rely on support. Most companies that sell in the USA have a 1yr warranty. 2 in some EU countries. Anytime someone leans on "support" as a selling point I wonder how great a printer is to need that support.
If you had to start from scratch, slow 10yr tech is DOA, If you have deadlines and need to scale up having a lot of slow reliable machines vs a few fast reliable machines is a no brainer. You can slow a fast machine but cannot speed up a slow machine. You save in power, space, capability, time savings and so many other variables.

    • @3DMusketeers
      @3DMusketeers  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

If I had to start from scratch I would be buying Prusa, especially if I had no knowledge. See, having easy access to support is a BIG selling point should you have issues, because these are not designed for the abuse we give them. Thankfully my prusas seem to not care at all, but other machines, may need more help. When you look at cheap printers though they almost become disposable as well.

I started with an ender pro 3. Built from the ground up, heavily modified to where I can't even call it an ender 3 anymore. If I had to do it all again I would not. Even when I got it working well it was slow. It got it tuned and working very well but there will always be bedslinger limitations.
When I got my X1C it just printed.....fast. I have a buddy with a Mk3s+ and was sure nothing could touch his printer in reliability. he changed his mind. A am almost at a year in ownership and my prints are great.
My buddy never needed to call prusa for help, with his printer. I never needed to call help for my creality or bambu. If a product is made well or if the info is out there to fix things there is no reason to call support unless you have a catastrophic failure that falls under warranty. I think the old guard such as yourself can't imagine a fully functioning product without a kludged together solution. Prusa is not king anymore. They sell a middling product with support. They arent the fastest, they arent the best quality. They arent the most reliable. They are a business selling plastic and metal printers with built in failure points(nozzles, gears, extruders, mainboards, PSU). They aren't unique.
Newbs run the gamut of what is this line running down my parts to why can't I print in mid air when the slicer allowed the gcode to go through. You can learn on a simple printer or an advanced one. The only difference is this video was about running a business with a printer. If you are learning on a slow bedslinger I can see why so many people give up on the hobby.

reliability is key. With that thought process @JJ then we should put newbie drivers in ferrari's and lambos because they are the fastest out there.
I much prefer the reliability of my 2002 honda accord and knowing I can fix it myself than dealing with the maintenance, payments, insurance, etc. of a super car, that and I live down a dirt road ha ha!
My Bambu experience has been TERRIBLE. I am running literally 0% success rate for over a month now and Bambu Support is all but USELESS. I already had a lemon, to have a second one is incredibly unlikely, but it seems that is the case. But since it takes hours or days to hear back from them, getting help has been slow and painful, whereas for Prusa they have live chat support 24/7.
I do not see the obsession with speed.. Reliability should matter more, but hey, when I need to replace parts it is easy.. Replacing the motherboard fan on my Bambu took over 2 hours... I will stick to slow and reliable, thank you.

@@3DMusketeers Ill easily admit you have way more experience than me. As I started printing in 2022 and my only experience is an $100(gotta love coupons) micro center ender 3 pro and X1CC. But in my inexperience you can see how a "3d printing newb" can get good prints on an advanced printer.
I have no issues with my BL. I have been(10 months from Kickstarter) watching your videos and from what I gather you refuse to upgrade firmware, and use your videos as a clickbait generator. (I'm not mad at you if it pays the bills) and it is entertaining so keep them up. It plays well to your audience.
But I can't take you 100% serious when your experience is so far outside the norm it makes me wonder if we have the same printer. Lol
This includes aurora tech, uncle Jesse, clough42, 3d print nerd, print general, teaching tech, CNC kitchen, the next layer, linus tech tips(short circuit), edge of tech mod bot, makers muse, mandi really, just vlad and countless others.
And if you got a lemon you are in the minority. If you do figure out your printer get a bambu affiliate link cause they are one of the best printers out so far and you deserve to be a vocal voice for us plebs.
Thank you for your thoughtful response.

I have no secure way to update firmware so I dont. I will not risk federal prison for firmware (nor would any sane person). If Bambu wont provide a secure way to update firmware that is not on me. My line of work is different than yours and requires vastly different security measures. We go through monthly security audits, have multiple air-gapped PC's, 5 separate backups of everything, etc. I am a business and that means, the rules are different. But I think we both know firmware wont miraculously fix issues like extruder and hotend problems..
In my defense on the titles, I dont pick them, the staff do. I am the guy that makes the video, we have an editor, a copywriter, graphic artist, etc. A whole team. I find no issues in them as they are not clickbait, they do not lie. Are they sensational? absolutely, that is the idea. Boring titles get no clicks. This channel is a money pit so far, costing upwards of 4k/mo and bringing in less than 1/4 of that in gross revenue. But, I enjoy doing it, and will continue until the haters just drive me away.
You dont have to take me 100% serious, you are not dealing with the same issues, if you were, you would understand. Over a dozen brands of filament tried and nothing is reliable. I am glad people have good experiences, but I am not one of them. If I got ANOTHER lemon, that is a serious issue. And, again, speaks volumes to their QA and QC issues. Just checked my SD card, 51 prints attempted in the last 22 days, 0 have succeeded without some form of intervention, machine failure, etc. We have clean power (running from an APC 3000), clean files (both stock and edits I am making on my own to test theories), and know the material works as it is fine in EVERY OTHER FDM PRINTER WE OWN lol. So, I can safely conclude, it is not me.. And given how deep I am with Bambu in this and they keep going down completely stupid paths (like going after my supports, even though they printed great), I have 0 faith in them being able to help people with problems like mine.

Wait - didn't you just say in a recent video that you are bailing on 3D printing as a business because it just isn't profitable enough, and you instead are emphasizing making content? Did i misunderstand? If not why are you encouraging others to get into it?

    • @3DMusketeers
      @3DMusketeers  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Locally the niche's are not doing well, so we are shifting focus. We see a massive need for education, and THEN we can get back into printing.
My decisions are based on our target markets and how they use 3d printing. It is part of the process, but not the whole process and that is the big key factor. Where you live, what you do, etc. is different from me and what I do. And, well, if it was just me, this is PLENTY profitable, but the YT channel eats around 2-4k/mo from our profits so, we are doubling down on what we think can be scaled the fastest, anywhere in the world: content.
