Yep. Thanks to the Silk Road some Middle Eastern (and African) culture was passed into the Orient. So voodoo making it into Chinese, and then Japanese, culture is totally plausible.

@@trans-ruffboi4605 I honestly thought you was talking about animals like how doe would freeze at headlights or something though kind of curious do you have a source for women getting scared more often?

Ghost and dragon are brother types: -Only one line in Gen 1. -Not a single move in Gen 1 that deals super effective damage -Only one new pokémon introduced in gen 2. -Only types that hit theirselves super effective.
Well, Ghost had 3 moves, but one was a status move, one was Night Shade ("static" damage), and one was Lick, which was bugged and didn't work on Psychic. But otherwise, Dragon and Ghost are *very* similar.

I can't decide between defeatist or wimp out since both help expand on the gimmick, figuratively or literally running from the fight, but I do think a form and type change is in order to really sell it. Maybe it could be another tengu pokemon. In fighting form it punches with it's wings, and in flying mode the wings get unfurled and it starts flapping away
@@asherdevin there could be two types. One that's more about fighting and is fighting type, maybe give it something like sturdy or one that gives raises it's attack/sp atk or a move type when low hp. Then one type that is flying and has wimp out or deafetest.

Here's a silly minitheory: what if Marshadow is the ghost of a deceased Riolu? They both have very similar Pokedex entries about how they can sense how others are feeling (Riolu through Aura and Marshadow through hiding in peoples shadows). They are also both Fighting type, with Marshadow obviously being Ghost. They are also both 2'04", so there is no height difference. Of course, they don't really look like each other, so this is more likely just speculation rather than an intentional design. But I can dream!
Also, speaking of Tomato Facts: The reason why people thought tomatoes were poisonous for the longest time was because they ate on lead plates. The juices would collect the lead particles, and then they'd consume it, poisoning the person. While it's not the EXACT explanation as to why it'd poison people (as in i could have gone more specific) but it's the main idea
But it is important to remember, some cultures already consumed a lot of lead. Lead is naturally very sweet. Some cultures, especially the nobility/rich, would add it in powder form to food and drinks to make it more palatable. So in some of those cultures that tried it and are off lead plates, they already had high amounts of lead poisoning so this would be a large dose that would easily tip them over into it being critical.

Also, seeing as how trick or treating seems to always start just before twilight, and twilight opened the path to the spirit world (not sure if that’s the name they used) in Spirited Away.

I think Eerie Light from Confuse Ray is more of a reference to ghost lights leading people astray, which is a pretty common myth. The lights appear in marshes or forests, and people follow them thinking they're fellow travelers or signs of civilization, but they just end up making people even more lost than they were. That sort of thing. It fits the Japanese name, and explains why "following the lights" (i.e. being hit by the move) always confuses the enemy.

Seven has a number of meanings. My personal favorite is completeness. 7 days in a week, 7 colors of the rainbow, 7 continents(ignoring subcontinents), and I'd throw in 7 seas but I never found out if that was figurative or specific to a defined set of 7. But whatever the case, 7 is at the core of many important things. Also, it's the last single digit prime number.
so, one thing i found out is that curses, hexs, and jinxs are all different, yet similar. from what i understand, Jinxes are made to merely misconvience the person afflicted (think like bad luck), hexes are made to bring illness or ill-will to them and typically last until the person learns their lesson, and curses are made to just slowly kill you with a very un-remorseful way. sometimes they are powerful enough to go through your entire bloodline.
22:55 Soul-stealing 7 star strike is likely also a reference to Kill Bill's "5 point palm exploding heart technique" and even more likely a reference to several techniques of hokuto Shinken (or the Big Dipper God fist) from Fist of the North Star, especially referencing Tenha no Kamae and the Juji zan, but replacing the glowing pattern of the Big Dipper and the impact shape of the southern cross respectively (both of which are made of 7 stars) with the z-move symbol.
The jumpscare at the first entry got me, but only after around 3 seconds after. And, the more scary thing there is how a lvl 100 dusklops is using astonish.

Theory Idea: You know Lockstin, the thing about the Variant Birds... is how the Galar natives seem to treat them... a Galar Native who knows about the birds say that they look wrong, and he actually expected them to be the original type... The Galar news doesn't know what they are.... and the 3 regional versions we see... only appeared for the 1st time to people during the time the Dens seemed to have connected to other dimensions...
So If I had to guess why Marshadow's signature move, Spectral thief, steals stat buffs, I believe it is because shadows are typically considered like a part of your soul that reflects your skills and abilities, hence stealling from the shadow would be robbing the oppenent of their aquired strength(ie: stat buffs) . That is also why the Z-move is called soul stealing. Again this is just my crappy memory and I've at least over simplified the meaning, or just got it wrong.
Also Ghost-types having access to moves that seem kinda Psychic-ish makes sense since in a lot of legends and modern media, ghosts can screw with your mind and even take control of it
I like to see ghost-type moves as more illusions and dark magic, hence the shadow moves and curse. And curse deals damage to ghost types because dark magic usually drains the soul, and ghost types are just souls
I always imagined Shadow Punch to be like Janemba's moves from Dragon Ball Z. Where fists appear from portals (or out of no where). Haunter's detached fists would be particularly good for this.
Ah, wait. You made the first of these ‘all moves of a type’ videos before Sword and Shield came out. You’ll have to make either a video on the remaining moves of the other types you preemptively already made videos for (correct me in the comments if I missed one or got one wrong, but I think those are Fighting, Steel, Dragon, and Fairy), Max and GMax moves included, or-now that the Crown Tundra has come out-a video on all of the moves that Gen 8 introduced, Max and GMax moves included. Also, you’d have to update your Gen 8 video with all the Pokémon that were introduced in the Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra...
11:10 Even with pokemon that wouldn't normally be hit by it, including Wonder Guard. (Wonder Guard is on a pokemon who already can be hit by ghost moves. Just something I noticed and not trying to be rude.)
23:20. Well, there's also seven points or stars that makeup the big/little dipper with one of them being the North Star. This attack also connects them into a similar in-game symbol. Other wise there is no obvious reference to Fist of the North Star. None, unless it references a constellation having each point punched or stabbed into someone's chest.
When I thought of Confuse Ray and why it would be Ghost-Type, I immediately of something like how you may see orbs flying around or like the Kitsunebi legend; which the Kitsunebi is a double-whammy for Ninetales as it can learn both Confuse Ray and Will o' Wisp. I thought of how those orbs are said to lure travelers to their doom. Not directly harming them, but luring them into a trap in their confused curiosity.
Of all ghost type Pokemon he could have picked, something popular like Gengar or Dragapult. Something creepy like Banette, or Mega Gengar, he chose the best ghost type Pokemon to have on the thumbnail. Sableye. Thank you Lockstin, you just made my day.
Ya know what’s also kinda weird, when ice horse calyrex dynamaxes it’s accents isn’t red, they are blue which is so weird. It’s so cold that it changed the red energy to blue
I guess I always assumed that shadow punch was a shadow shaped fist coming from the targets shadow which is why it never misses because it’s from your own shadow
3:30 I thought it was based on Voodoo dolls, the fact that there's a similar Japanese doll thing means partially right. But the nail and the taking off your HP is clearly supposed to be from the doll's perspective. It lost HP because it had a big ol' nail driven through it.
Ghost, dragon, and fairy are the types that I originally didn't get how they worked like what makes a dragons claw different from a slash, a twinkle tackle different from a regular tackle (besides the power difference), or a shadow ball from an energy ball. I get that dragon types use raw draconic primal magic/energy and fairy use refined nature energy but do ghosts just use spirit energy. Ghost is one of my favorite types in Pokemon, it's that weird type that I can't explain the least about its also the second rarest type in Pokemon just behind ice, and the only other type than dragon to be weak to itself. The ghost type is just so interesting.
19:36 I have to defend Giratina because it came before Gen 6, so Phantom Force is a ripoff of IT’S signature move.

Anyone else remember sweeping teams with Gengar with Hypnosis + Dream Eater? Also Game Freak, **BRING BACK GENGAR'S LEVITATE ABILITY**

so, one thing i found out is that curses, hexs, and jinxs are all different, yet similar. from what i understand, Jinxes are made to merely misconvience the person afflicted (think like bad luck), hexes are made to bring illness or ill-will to them and typically last until the person learns their lesson, and curses are made to just slowly kill you with a very un-remorseful way. sometimes they are powerful enough to go through your entire bloodline.
Phantom force: discount shadow force.
Psyshock: discount Psystrike
22:55 Soul-stealing 7 star strike is likely also a reference to Kill Bill's "5 point palm exploding heart technique" and even more likely a reference to several techniques of hokuto Shinken (or the Big Dipper God fist) from Fist of the North Star, especially referencing Tenha no Kamae and the Juji zan, but replacing the glowing pattern of the Big Dipper and the impact shape of the southern cross respectively (both of which are made of 7 stars) with the z-move symbol.

Theory Idea:
You know Lockstin, the thing about the Variant Birds... is how the Galar natives seem to treat them... a Galar Native who knows about the birds say that they look wrong, and he actually expected them to be the original type... The Galar news doesn't know what they are.... and the 3 regional versions we see... only appeared for the 1st time to people during the time the Dens seemed to have connected to other dimensions...
Somebody get this man to the top of the comments
They came from another dimension
It's canon now
We're not going to let Game Freak tell us otherwise
Counterpoint: they became the way they are asa result of eating the fruits of the huge Dyna Tree.
They are stated to appear in Crown Tundra once a decade

That is the creepiest sableye ever.
Also, I love how the ghost that came out of Clefable was Gengar.

I feel like they can be divided into categories of: fear-based, shadowy, and malicious/vengeful
Makes sense to me.
maybe the idea is that Marshadow literally steals your shadow, so it is basically taking your soul and all the buffs in it
Never thought of that! Always happy to see Marshadow theories anyways.
Think about Geko Moria in One Piece. THAT is a strong reason for Marshadow signature move to act like that.
I like to think that the curse move makes you sacrifice something in order to gain something (or in the ghost type case, to harm someone)
I always imagined Shadow Punch to be like Janemba's moves from Dragon Ball Z. Where fists appear from portals (or out of no where). Haunter's detached fists would be particularly good for this.
11:11 It's ironic because even without the extra effect, Moongeist Beam would still hit a Shedinja, the only Pokemon with the Wonder Guard ability.

Honestly love how much effort you put into this and love the way you explained it Lockstin. Ghost types are my fav.
“Today we are covering ghost type moves”
Lemme just fix that for you “today we are talking about ‘the best type‘s’ moves.”

I love the sableye at the end. :)... also where did the "Boo" sound effect come from

I think it's him saying it as Maxil.
"Demons and ghosts were petty." Bro, dude, like totally.

@@zenkaiangel977 guess you could say that , but it took me like the whole night to understand what the meaning of the statement was.....
actually the “7 star” in Soul Stealing 7-Star Strike is referring to the animation when Marshadow punches and kicks into the Z power shape thing

"Why would an eerie light confuse you? We just don't get it!"
Exactly.

I'd say Grudge of Destiny Bond when you're trying to capture a pokemon.

There are also seven stars in the big dipper.
I always assumed Marshadow's Z-move was a Fist of the North Star reference.

3:30 I thought it was based on Voodoo dolls, the fact that there's a similar Japanese doll thing means partially right. But the nail and the taking off your HP is clearly supposed to be from the doll's perspective. It lost HP because it had a big ol' nail driven through it.

I lost it there. Copyright laws are dumb.
