I thought Decidueye was based off the Hawaiian stilt owl. They both look very similar with coloring and have the long white legs. Geist is German for Ghost. The "polter" from Poltergeist means as much as making loud sounds by throwing over objects, both willingly and unwillingly. Basically Poltergeist means Ghost that throws stuff around and makes a lot of noise.
... Did he really not cover the 666 reference in Giratina's design? while that might not be intentional, its such a common thing to hear about you'd think he'd bring up the possible devil connection
The whole "666" thing was almost definitely unintentional. You can find sets of six on many other Pokémon. Besides, Giratina isn't really "evil", considering it stepped in to stop the destruction of the universe in Platinum, and doesn't directly interfere with earthly affairs otherwise. If any Pokémon is truly demonic, I would say it's Hoopa. Although it is primarily based on a djinn, it has all the typical "Satan" design elements, from the goatee to the pointed tail. It also enjoys causing chaos and destruction, and has the power to do so with its six rings. Not to mention that it's a dark type, which is literally "evil type" in Japanese.
Giratina in Diamond & Pearl is found in Turnback Cave at Sendoff Spring, which real world location is based off of Lake Mashu, "The Lake of the Devil" (The Ainu devil depicted in their stories). A local legend says that if you see the surface the Lake you may have bad luck and the lake is so clear no one is allowed to go near it or defile it. Furthermore the Ainu devil is depicted as a snake who would eat the sun but was but was thrawted by a crow that had flew down his throat, much like Giratina's Origin Forme appearance. It should also be noted that Giratina wears a Kabuto helmet and its horns are a Datemono ornament, like a samurai. It should be noted that there was conflict between the Ainu, the indigenous people of Hokkaido where Shinnoh is based on, and the "Children of the Sun" or the Japanese people whio came from southern Okinawa, that we know today. At lake mashu there is a cave called Takeshiro's Cave, A Cave the ainu people reveared as housing the Gods by the Ainu people. There's probably more iconography and information associated with Giratina but no one's really looked into it yet. but all this is more of the stuff surrounding giratina than its name origin
Another thing with Giratina is, if we tie it to Palkia and Dialga, it could be the compactified dimensions, dimensions which must exist within current understanding if gravity and quantum mechanics are to go together, but obviously, we have three spatial and one temporal dimension that we experience. So where are these seven other dimensions? The theory is that they became "compactified", i.e. as the three spatial dimensions expanded (imperfect tense, since they're still expanding) to infinity, they contracted to the infinitesimal. I should disclaim that physicists don't actually believe in string theory, but it's not because of seven additional dimensions; it's because there's no way to prove it wrong.
I have to agree with that but Lock is right saying it's not a ghost. I think it's scarier than that, it's a demon or the pokemon version of the devil itself.
You left out the part about Frillish dragging creatures down under the water and drowning them. I feel like I've heard of evil spirits that drown people before
"and drowning them alive" no duh what? are they supposed to drown them dead? (don attack me pls i am not being mean or anything i am just pointing that out)
@@chunkymonkey7983It is, some part of its name in Japanese means "Its a sand castle" So they most likely would put pile of sand in English like they did for other pokemon
I once read a theory that Dartrix _commits suicide_ to become Decidueye because of its narcissism and feeling of inferiority due to being being somewhat of a birdbrain (no pun intended). Edgy, I know.
The honedge line are much more than haunted swords. They possess whoever grabs their hilt, and cause them to go on a murderous rampage. The same thing happens to the wielders of Soul Edge, from the Soul Calibur series; Anubis, the sword stand from Jojo; and Sacrifar, the 9th form of the 10 Commandments sword from Rave Master.
My guess is Soul Calibur, Anubis, pokemon, etc, get their legend from the OG cursed sword the Muramasa blade of 18th century Japan. Which possessed its users to go on bloodlusted rampages due to how much blood was soaked into it.
Actually, even if that's true, jellyfish are well-known for being named for or resembling spirits and ghosts. Because they're 90+ percent water, their bodies are nearly see-through, and plenty are bioluminescent, which gives them a ghostly glow in deep waters. Not to mention, they float about aimlessly, killing whatever touches their tentacles.
A bunch of English words for supernatural things are just antiquated or foreign ways of saying something simple like "corpse" or "ghost" but have acquired additional connotations thanks to fantasy and horror media. "Lich" is one, just being an Old English word for corpse that now means an extremely specific type of undead bound to a phylactery. Geist likewise has a more specific meaning than just "ghost" in modern English fantasy or horror.
It's even more general than ghost, it means spirit and soul. For example the humanities in German are called Geistwissenschaft (literally: sciences of the spirit) because they uplift your spirit or your soul.
Doppelgänger and Gjenganger is pretty much the same thing. The Swedish version of the word is Gengångare. Not literally the same as doppelgänger, but the words are related to ghostly or mystical... things(?) that looks like a person, but the Swedish and Norwegian words are indeed more of a revenant, or someone who walks again after death or "går igen" in Swedish. *Edit*: Doppelgänger is actually directly translated into Dubbelgångare in Swedish, but the connections between the words are never the less interesting to me.
A Doppelgänger is just someone who looks like another person, might be a ghost but it's more often used for completly non spooky things, like if two people just look kinda similar. Someone coming back from the dead would be a Wiedergänger in German, but both words have the Gänger part that Gengar might take his name from.
11:54 I read from “Dr. Lavas Lost Pokemon” Twitter account that Frillish was originally supposed to be just water but then got ghost type added to balance out the gen 5 typing and because ghost and water had not been done before. Apparently, Frillish’s designer was not pleased with this.
They seem to have drifted away from eachother. They no longer have opposing typings, and gengar has a mega. Also it’s strange that their evolutionary lines don’t fully synch up like other notable counterparts. Gengar had 3 Pokémon in its line at the time of its creation, while clefable only had 2.
4:55 The National Dex actually covered Sandygast and Pallosand, confirming that the two are based on the fact that sand itself is the remains of dead animals (which is true). Thus, the foundation of their ghost typing comes from there.
In giratina, the tina part is from platina, which is an alloy a platin, hence pokemon platinum. It controls antimatter which is unknown and somewhat creepy, hence ghost while lots of people also relate it to gas. Not to mention it was also banished
@@ape7119 yes you are right about it tough i would say it will be an interesting addition to cover shiny pokemon genetics or a change to survive (example mareanie and toxapex shiny looks like they use it to camuflage on coral and prey easily on corsola)
Rotom might also be a reference to the ghost in/from the machine. This phenomena is most prominently explored in things like Ghost in the Shell, iRobot, Detroit: Become Human etc. The thought that AI and cyber augmentation will develop it's own soul.
I always thought of Drifloon as a lost balloon. When a child lets go of a balloon, they have that dawning realization that they can't get it back. It's sort of a rite of passage for a kid; a lesson about loss. Drifloon, as a ghost type, represents the "death" of that balloon: it's a manifestation of despair at something that can never be recovered.
It absolutely is. Take away the ears and drawn-on face, and it looks like a kapu stick with a crooked stick (Mimikyu's tail). Breaking kapu is usually punishable by death (Ghost type), and seeing Mimikyu's true form is literally 𝘬𝘢𝘱𝘶 -- forbidden. (And also results in death).

Yeah, but ghosts aren't that clearly defined. Do it right now, go make a list if spirits from different mythos and attempt to categorize them. Trust me from experience, it is difficult.
Funny enough, ever since using one in pokemon sword, Dusknoir has actually become one of my favourites ^^ didnt really care too much for it before, but I really start to like its design, with its animation, the face on its body starting to glow when it opens its mouth... yeah pretty sick ^^ still miss my mega sableye tho ;'(
My favorite ghost type is Sableye. One of the reasons is that it’s based on the hopskinville goblin. Which I might be spelling that wrong. I just love that it’s based on such a great alien myth. I also love that it has diamonds for eyes. Fun fact about me I have a huge precious mineral and fossil collection.
id love it if u remade this vid with all the improvments uv made since, for example, in this ur sorta loosely listing pokemon while occasionally weakly referencing how u make these now is WAY better (clearly ur style evolved since then)
My reasoning for Decidueye is that a bit of its soul lingers in the dead feathers it uses as arrows, allowing it to adjust their trajectory, or use ghost type powers like soul shackle with it. Basically more like its feathers/leaves are undead. Based primarily on the Deciduous part of its namesake.
The Honedge line are yokai that comes about if a object is around for a long time(like over 100 years old). So they are yokai not ghosts. But they would still fit in ghost types.
I actually learned in one of my college classes that "geist" is the German word for "spirit". Gives Gourgeist another layer of name origin, doesn't it?
You could say that Mimikyu is Bill Cipher, Spiritomb is a mix of Blackheart/Legion and mafubá container, Alolan Marowak is the Ghost Rider and Dusknoir is... Melinda Gordon. xD

Mahou Point damn, that’s actually really interesting!
Damn thats a lot
You used your Gnoggin
Great job 👍
Hey, it's more than the bulbapedia page that this video was taken from, kuddos.
I have to agree with that but Lock is right saying it's not a ghost. I think it's scarier than that, it's a demon or the pokemon version of the devil itself.

What if Gengar is the doppelgänger to Clefable. Thought you were gonna mention something about it

Edgy, I know.
Wow.......
so, what your telling me is, if pokemon were real, not only could you train them but die an become a handful of pokemon mentioned in this video?
So basically
None of them weren't ghosts. Neat

What? Moly holy i thought they only stole their spirits not posses them
doesn't honedge drain the life force of those who try to hold it?
My guess is Soul Calibur, Anubis, pokemon, etc, get their legend from the OG cursed sword the Muramasa blade of 18th century Japan. Which possessed its users to go on bloodlusted rampages due to how much blood was soaked into it.
Also Frostmourne from wow.
The soul that makes up Honedge's body was killed by the sword that it possessed.
Jellicent wasn’t actually meant to be a ghost type, it was changed last minute for type balancing- this would explain y it shouldn’t be one
LegendRaptor080 alright smartass that still doesn’t change the fact that it wasn’t meant to be one

"Geist" is literally just German for Ghost. You don't have to look so deep into it.
Fair point but this whole line of videos are meant to look deeper into it
A bunch of English words for supernatural things are just antiquated or foreign ways of saying something simple like "corpse" or "ghost" but have acquired additional connotations thanks to fantasy and horror media.
@@Elsenoromniano actually they´re called "Geisteswissenschaften" just wanted to point that out
Elsenoromniano Geist means Not only ghost but Spirit in all of it meanings
Isn't gengar a dopelganger of clefairy ?
@@sank3297 I would rather say it's clefable's shadow that came to life

11:54 I read from “Dr. Lavas Lost Pokemon” Twitter account that Frillish was originally supposed to be just water but then got ghost type added to balance out the gen 5 typing and because ghost and water had not been done before. Apparently, Frillish’s designer was not pleased with this.
Note to self, don't watch this video in the dark at 2am in the morning when everyone is asleep upstairs.
Great idea
I’m watching this at 4:39 am
I did...
yeah i agree
Gengar could also be seen as the doppelganger of Clefable.
Wait... isn't that theory debunked?
They seem to have drifted away from eachother. They no longer have opposing typings, and gengar has a mega. Also it’s strange that their evolutionary lines don’t fully synch up like other notable counterparts. Gengar had 3 Pokémon in its line at the time of its creation, while clefable only had 2.
It was when gengar gained it's mega, however for the longest time it was acknowledged by GF that the two were related
That is stupid

4:55 The National Dex actually covered Sandygast and Pallosand, confirming that the two are based on the fact that sand itself is the remains of dead animals (which is true). Thus, the foundation of their ghost typing comes from there.

Another layer that ties Alolan Marowak to ghosts is it being a reference to Hawaiian nightwalkers. Ghosts of warriors who haven't stopped battling.

Decidueye being a ghost type was actually pretty clever
Rotom might also be a reference to the ghost in/from the machine. This phenomena is most prominently explored in things like Ghost in the Shell, iRobot, Detroit: Become Human etc. The thought that AI and cyber augmentation will develop it's own soul.
I always thought of Drifloon as a lost balloon. When a child lets go of a balloon, they have that dawning realization that they can't get it back. It's sort of a rite of passage for a kid; a lesson about loss. Drifloon, as a ghost type, represents the "death" of that balloon: it's a manifestation of despair at something that can never be recovered.
true
6:56 Gosh, i was so terrified with this ghost as a child
Are you sure Mimikyu isn’t based on a Kapu Stick and Taboo mixed with the Mimic?
It absolutely is. Take away the ears and drawn-on face, and it looks like a kapu stick with a crooked stick (Mimikyu's tail). Breaking kapu is usually punishable by death (Ghost type), and seeing Mimikyu's true form is literally 𝘬𝘢𝘱𝘶 -- forbidden. (And also results in death).

Yeah, but ghosts aren't that clearly defined. Do it right now, go make a list if spirits from different mythos and attempt to categorize them. Trust me from experience, it is difficult.

My favorite ghost type is Sableye. One of the reasons is that it’s based on the hopskinville goblin. Which I might be spelling that wrong. I just love that it’s based on such a great alien myth. For Giritina I think its that the distortion world is the opposite from the living and death is the opposite of life
It’s not, it a reverse world, there another afterlife in Pokémon.
id love it if u remade this vid with all the improvments uv made since, for example, in this ur sorta loosely listing pokemon while occasionally weakly referencing
how u make these now is WAY better (clearly ur style evolved since then)
“Do you believe in ghosts?
Huh, I guess not.. so that white hands on your shoulder, and I just imagining it?”
7:44 Nah. "Geist" is just the German word for ghost.
Johannes I’m pretty sure that also derived from the word Poltergeist.
Melinda Gordon. xD
