    - BRAVO!!! I've seen a local shop asking $500 even for RIMLESS frames! Hooray for the cheapness and huge customizing ability soon available from 3D printing! Most people won't want to do the work you did, but they'll flock online to get it done for them.
    - Normally I pay about $100 online for my glasses, including the lenses, with a good choice of frames, but not customizable.
    - The ideal is an ultra-easy online designer page where anyone can custom design and buy their glasses, to be made by a factory full of busy 3D printers. It may exist, I'm at this moment exploring, dunno yet. Bruce Thomson in New Zealand.

      Nice. It's an excellent printer. I've had mine for over 2 years now and it's still as solid as day one.

    • @komitadjie
      @komitadjie 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a darn good thing to hear! More or less everything I've heard is that it's really solid. The assembly looks a bit on the complex side, but probably not that bad. I've built an Inventables X-Carve before, so at least I'm familiar with the process. :)

    Do you printed frames not use a screw to attach the legs to the frame? Would the 3d printer be able to incorporate the threads, or would one have to manually drill the threads in?

  • @Mizar88

    Hey nice glasses! But there's a thing that I don't understand: why didn't you sand them after the printing? I mean, the finishing could be better!

    • @HenryZwiefelhofer
      @HenryZwiefelhofer  8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Yes I could have sanded and finished them, but I prefer the rougher finish that makes them feel made, not bought. Personal preference I guess.

    What is the cheapest 3D printer for spect frames?

    • @HenryZwiefelhofer
      @HenryZwiefelhofer  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you could make them any shape or design you wanted. For a cheap entry level printer, a Prusa i3 style printer would work. Something like the Wanhao Duplicator i3.

  • @rwz
    @rwz 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi Henry, I am curious as I want to do the same for some old glasses, did you do any special manipulation for the glasses to not fall out? It is hard to see in the video, any groove or so...

    • @HenryZwiefelhofer
      @HenryZwiefelhofer  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Rene Weselowski They just fit in tightly. The layer lines from the printing help add friction to keep them in place. Later on I did add a lip to the front face but that was mostly to hide the edges of the lenses for a more finished look.

    so how does one do this, more explanation and less music.

    • @HenryZwiefelhofer
      @HenryZwiefelhofer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry, not intended to be a step by step tutorial.
      The basics are:
      Scan lens.
      Insert photo into CAD program of choice.
      Scale image to the correct real world dimensions.
      Trace profile of the lens.
      Take measurements of frames to find the distance between the lenses and placement of nose rests.
      Draw up the profile of the face frames you would like.
      Draw up a set of temples that fit.
      Trial and error a few different designs and hinges to get a good fit.
      Make TH-cam video with too much music.

    Hey Henry, I'm about to dive in but I'm not sure I understand the hinge at the arm. Is that a traditional system with a screw or was it exactly how it looked in the video: one piece slotting into the other? Thanks!
    Josh

    • @HenryZwiefelhofer
      @HenryZwiefelhofer  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Joshua Young Initially it was going to be a screw but I quickly abandoned that idea since it would be too fragile.
      I ended up going with a design that snapped together with a ball and socket. On the frame I made a slot for the sides to snap in with a bump on either side and a divot on the part for the sides.
      It's not really shown in video since I spent a lot of time designing/redesigning the parts and didn't want hours of footage to deal with. In the end it worked out well.
      If you are planning on wearing them often, plan on making extra parts since the pivots eventually wear out from use. My glasses last a few weeks to a month before they start to get loose.
      I hope this explains things well. Best of luck on your design.

  • @pomagrrnte
    @pomagrrnte 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey, I've been wanting to do this as well. I have a pair of frames that are pretty fucked, and I would love to make an approximate replica of what I have (or had, rather). Taping and scanning the lens was a good move, definitely going to do that. I think that I will have trouble with the curvy parts of the lenses and trying to make it so that the lenses snap into the frame nicely, any tips on that? Did you just take whatever measurements you could and then did a bunch of trial and error?

    • @HenryZwiefelhofer
      @HenryZwiefelhofer  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the lens I used a spline line tool to closely follow the perimeter of the lens and used the measurements to make sure it was the right size. Luckily they snapped in first try. They fit very well and I haven't had a lens pop out in the few weeks I've worn them.
      Let me know what you end up with, I'd be interested in seeing your results!

    • @katbakalova1466
      @katbakalova1466 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry I gotta bother you again (I'm the same person as pomagrrnte). for all the curvy parts for 1:00 ish - 1:12 ish, were you just approximating the dimensions? Thanks so much for making this video by the way, I reference it all the time and I also show people so that they understand what I mean when I tell them I want to 3d print some glasses haha.

    • @HenryZwiefelhofer
      @HenryZwiefelhofer  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the kind words. I didn't show that part but I placed a lens flat on a table and used a ruler to get some approximate measurements for the profile. It happened to work out on the first try for me but you may need to play around with it to get it perfect.

    • @HenryZwiefelhofer
      @HenryZwiefelhofer  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Katya Bakalova Also when I get time I will put together a follow up video where I will address that and go over some of the design in more detail.

      It seems you have not yet found the time to do the more detailed follow up. My son broke his glasses and I thought this could be a short fix until he gets new ones. For inspiration I searched and found your video, but I have not used the 3D CAD software so the speed of your video is inspiring but not instructive. ;). Thanks for sharing, great work!

      I do not have any formal training. I self-taught myself to do most of this. Over time I have learned shortcuts and how to better use the features. I would recommend 123D as a good and easy program to get started with. TH-cam has many tutorials for using 123D so that would be a good place to start.
