Worn nibs usually form sharp edges which will stick into the talbet surface and cause damage, even if it is just plastic nib! Smooth metal nibs with very little friction causes barely no wear at all; and the tablet surface won't be able to "sharpen" the metal tip.
For a cintiq display if you want to protect the surface of the tablet you can get a tempered glass sheet or a vinyl protective sheet and lay it on the cintiq. You wont have the smooth paper feel but at least youll have an layer of protection and the only thing affected will be the film. I have a photodon sheet on myne (the H version).
The surface of the newer tablets are now textured and will wear nibs down faster Than the ordinal Intuos 1 and 2 tablets. I think this was done not for the paper feel or texture but to get you order more Nibs there are covers for the newer tablets. I use the white Nylon nibs and what took month or years to wear down on the Intuos 2 12x18. I still have most all the original nylon nibs from that Intuos 2. I did put heavy wear on that surface of the Intuos 2 and wish I had to order replacements The smooth surface will warp a bit over time. I did for my Intuos 4 extra large(12x18) but also order a surface cover of eBay cover the drawing are and protects the original but also cut wearing down of nibs. Oh, and went crazy when found a big sale on nibs and order back-ups of black nibs and nylon white nibs. I think have like 10 year supply now depending on my uses. and under $20 surface cover varies in price. the 12x18 was like $25, and I order 2 plus 2 back up factor drawing surface for the Intuos 4 XL.
6 months to make a challenge? Wow, that's pretty long. I hope you make your experiment well. If this video goes recommended, then this should be popular in order to seek attention to anyone whose planning to buy a nib from different materials. For some reasons, I'm going to stick with plastic material nib for now. Useful information on your video btw.
Thank you! I wish I could do this in a smaller amount of time. But I thought six months would be needed to really show whether the surface will experience observable damage.
it's been great. It hasn't affected the surface of the pen tablet at all! I'm making the update video this weekend and will publish it as soon as I can.
I'm going to replicate your test with some titanium nibs I purchased off Amazon -- the one you listed here is out of stock and would be an international shipment, so a no-go.
im still in the intro so i dont know if this is covered but i have a tablet cover, i have the ability to make them myself, very high quality ones that are also laminated, but do you think that the metal nib will wear through the cover quickly? because i go through nibs super fast and making new covers would be a lot easier to do than buy replacement nibs because they are either out of stock or shipping is rediculously expensive.
@@thesevenpens it's so sad that isn't already any seller out there that would have created a metal nib for the Huion models 💔🤧 I tried the metal tips for Apple Pencil before, and them are waayyy better than the originals, just add another level of natural feeling to the digital work. I would like to have something similar in my Kamvas.
@@avroravioletacontrerasrivas I didn't know there were metal tips for the Apple Pencil! I'll have to try those out soon! if I do find a metal nib solution for Huion, I'll post it in the comments to this video.
Interesting experiment! Love how in detail you went, can't wait for the results!

The PTH-860 surface is a woodchipper, and you can't get smooth texture sheets anywhere.
I’ve searched all over for that elusive smooth texture sheet with no luck :-(
5 months to go. So far how's the metal nibs?

@@thesevenpens are you using a metal nibs and screen protector on your tablet?
@@aintcappin I’m using a metal nib with my Wacom Intuos Pro Large (PTH-860). I am drawing right on its surface with no additional protective layer.
Super Helpful not many videos out there on metal nips
Thank you! I am really looking forward to see how this experiment turns out.
Since I seen this video, I wanted to know what that metal nib goes to what pen tablet
Are you looking for a metal nib for your own tablet? I've only been able to find metal nibs for Wacom tablets.

Hi! 9 months later, whats the results?
if you use metal nib you can also use it on a sheet of paper, you don't have to wear out the surface. metal nib will glide on a paper.

Do you know if this metal nib would be compatible with a huion pencil ?
This nib won't work with a Huion. It's just not the same shape - too short and thin. I just tried with my Huion PW517 pen - it just falls right out.
