Man absolutely love your channel. The humor is just as good as the info. And yes, lets have a moment of silence for the many families who mourn their loss for not using a spectrum analizer before transmitting.
The spectrum analyzer can't tell you if there are "spurious emissions" from your radio (regardless of brand/model, etc.), until you . . . . TRANSMIT on it!!!! 😁😁😁😁
Not gonna lie, I lol’d for real, when you said to turn on the Roger beep! Excellent troll! Well done! The only thing that makes me a “ sad ham” is that you are not a ham yourself! Because you have an amazing understanding of radios! Love your videos!

love this type of video, actually showing how to use and program the radio. Being a licensed HAM I have no clue on these radios, never did anything after getting my license and enjoy all of your content. You actually got me motivated to start learning more and now I have my GMRS license and Midland MXT400 and now I have the UV5R for our travels.
good video, I feel your frustration with "sad hams". I gave up on ham radio 10 years ago, but still keep my license up to date. I joined three clubs and volunteered for ARES/RACES. As soon as they saw a CB antenna on my vehicle, it was all over. Besides that, the "holier than thou" attitude was getting to me anyway. BTW, Like the comedic satire.
Thankfully, that type of behavior in clubs is at a minimum here in the Seattle area. I interact with three clubs regularly, and host a Net on one of them. A fourth club is filled with members who are only into Contests, and had some snide comments about my interest in CB radio. Whatever, right? It's all two way radio in my book.
@@kl7dzq I'm fairly new to HAM and got my start with CB radio. There's a good community here in SC for both. At Field Day this year, I brought both groups together, and each actually showed a high interest in the other. I'm all for growth of the entire two-way radio world.
I just bought a pair the other week! Turned them on and checked operation and started going through the manual! This explanation is by far much easier! Thanks

I love these videos! Clears up so much about my Baofeng that I needed to know. I was getting buried under an avalanche of "important" warnings from various sad HAM aficionados online.
I agree, the UV-5R is an amazing radio for an amazing price. My only concern is that so many have been bought by people whose favorite pass time is to cause interference for legitimate licensed users. Just hope that some of these will realize that putting a little effort into becoming a useful ham operator would be a lot more rewarding and fun. (Of course, I know that many use these radios just for listening. That great. That's what I do 95% of the time, even though I'm licensed.)
I agree causing interference just because they can is dumb. I don't transmit anything, but I see not paying the Govt for permission to use a free service that they provide nothing as a small defiance to a tyrannical Govt.
I stumbled across your videos about a year ago and I’ve been a subscriber ever since and have gotten my GMRS license and I am now the proud owner of several GMRS radios and three UV5R’s. Keep those videos coming sir you are great.

Fantastic video thank you! Also very much appreciate you taking the time to add chapters for each setting. I wish more TH-cam people did things like that.
Thanks for all the great videos, just bought one of these radios because it was cheap and interesting. I’m currently studying the beginners ham radio operators manual and will hopefully soon be a licensed operator. You make things very simple and your videos have been very helpful.
Thank you for teaching us the wonderful menu selection options and suggestions from a “Professional Ham Radio Operator. “ As a noob, I love to learn from an obvious expert in the field.
one thing i'll add on the squelch. you can always hold the little black button on the side under the transmit button to open the squelch temporarily. great content. thanks for the channel
The only good use I've found for that alarm is for what I use it for. I live fairly rural and a couple neighbors are elderly so I got them these radios so if something happens they can get ahold of me like one of the meth heads in the area snooping around or a health issue. They can call 911 first but that's likely to be a 20 wait for them to arrive often longer out here so while they wait they hit that alarm button and I hear it and go assist them. I know on the first responders radios if they hit it cops will show up to where they are so it's location tracked somehow. But those radios are expensive and not really available to us mere peasants.
I just ordered my first radio, a UV-5R for SHTF. I just found your channel and have been learning some great stuff that's going to make the experience a lot more enjoyable. I like your no B.S approach so I hit the like button and subbed, without you even telling me too. LOL!!! Thanks.

Love the videos Randy, keep 'em coming! As a complete rookie novice who bought a pair of UV-5Rs on Amazon thinking I was getting some cool walkie talkies for backpacking, I'm trying to decide to send them back or keep them. After lots of research (20-30 minutes give or take), I've discovered I'm in over my head. I'd like to be able to use these radios while out on the trail to communicate with my wife and hiking buddy point-to-point. But also like the idea of being able to blast away on this thing if I'm in a jam and need help (almost bit by rattlesnake on my last hike). I would like to use a few of the FRS channels for those point-to-point comms with my wife, but do not want to exceed the 2W power limits set by the FCC. I've got CHIRP all set up and I am teaching myself how to use it but can't figure out how to limit my transmit power to just 2W. Got any tips you can share?
Thank you for making this serious but funny video. I always lock the keypad before handing the radio to others so that they won’t mess up the settings.
I am not a ham operator and bought the Baofeng UV-5R. used chirp and added all FRS channels on it and made sure i could not transmit on any GMRS and Ham freq. Love the radio!!
Wow this is GREAT I purchased my radio's oh about 5 weeks ago and briefly browsed through the manual and thought SHIT this is going to take more time than I've got. But stumbled on to your channel and wow now I'm a pro, well not really but you do make it a lot easier thank you.
Hey regarding squelch, when the uv5r is connected to a computer, there is an advanced settings section where u can change the value of each squelch setting. U can adjust each one consecutively (starting at the “0” setting) in ascending order to the “9” setting for a smoother adjustment of the squelch.

Nice. When your the pilot hearing an unauthorized and interfering FM signal on your comms during an emergency, you go ahead and grin. Aircraft use AM for a reason. Yeah. You are an expert. Sure. .
@@tahoma6889 Aircraft use a totally separate part of the radio spectrum, so they won't hear a UV-5R. I refer you to my reply to @davep6977 above, in which you get a descriptive mention. I’ve been a ham for 21 years and have never liked the know-it-alls. Hobbies are supposed to be fun. We’re not saving the world. Also, just because a radio can transmit on a frequency doesn’t mean the owner goes around transmitting there all day. And a 5 watt radio with no antenna is no match for the high powered radios in aircraft. Come on, man!
Love your style. One question... if you if you leave dual watch on and have your friends transmit on the top channel and you transmit in the lower channel and they set their radio up to do the opposite of you, wouldn't that still work? It could give a layer of secrecy if you don't want others involved in the entire conversation. They would have to figure out your frequencies for the whole conversation.
For purposes of COMSEC this is the reason NC Scout recommends exactly what you've described in his book The Guerilla's Guide To The Baofeng Radio. But for everyday non-tactical purposes it's not necessarily needed.

Just purchased two UV-5R for the wife and I. We use them on my friend's property 100+ acres and little to no cell service. You've got yourself another subscriber , your tutorial videos are awesome 👍
What simplex frequency do you use if you don’t mind me asking ? I’m really new to this but I have a uv-5r and a uv-9G I mostly got them to scan/listen but I do a lot of hunting/hiking so it would be nice to use them as regular walkie talkies.

Did you ever do anything with those MRE.

Lol ! Yeah love it !!
Great video. Thankyou Sir!!!!
As a new HAM I get all kinds of comments about how I have my Roger Beep on. Thanks for the advice!!
I'm one of hams who is too lazy to read most of the manual, so I appreciate the tip about setting the alarm mode to 'site.' I've never read that far down the list of menu options to know that that was a thing. I always seem to learn something new when viewing your videos. Thanks for posting them!!
I didn't read the manual either. I just programmed mine from the computer. The software has easy to understand options, but I don't remember seeing an option for that stupid alarm.
There is no point in reading the manual hahaha it doesn't say anything
My manual was 3 pages broken into 5 different languages.
Read and still have manual Randy just breaks it down in English much easier to understand him than manual.
Thanks, Randy, for the chuckles and information. Your explanations sure beat the "USER MANUAL" Garble-Translate of Chinese to Engrish.
Thank YOU!

Was it a spurious nocturnal emission?
Nice.
Too funny !
I hate it when that happens.
"There's no stupid questions, only stupid statements" is a great saying
Only stupid people asking them.

I used to have spurious emissions but I found an excellent urologist. Things are good now.
Man absolutely love your channel. The humor is just as good as the info. And yes, lets have a moment of silence for the many families who mourn their loss for not using a spectrum analizer before transmitting.
the trillions of people who have died are missed
The spectrum analyzer can't tell you if there are "spurious emissions" from your radio (regardless of brand/model, etc.), until you . . . . TRANSMIT on it!!!!
😁😁😁😁
I was disappointed to not see the floating Sad Ham over your shoulder this time.
Soooo wanted to see Sadham. That thumbnail was a clickbait tease.
Not gonna lie, I lol’d for real, when you said to turn on the Roger beep! Excellent troll! Well done!
The only thing that makes me a “ sad ham” is that you are not a ham yourself! Because you have an amazing understanding of radios!
Love your videos!
neither am I. Been a Pirate from the late '70s.
Me and Hams have always got along.
They used to come down to 27mHz cos they got 'bored' on the Amatuer Bands! hahaha
I don’t have the UV-5R version and yet I rush to watch your video because I am confident the opener will make me smile and laugh. Bingo, delivered as expected!
Love the instructional videos on the uv5r. Very well explained step by step instructions that even the simple minded like myself can understand without getting confused. Thank you so much. 😁
The added humour is definitely icing on the cake.
After watching nearly all of your UV-5R videos, despite the comments, I'm going to make the UV-5R my 1st handheld radio!

I had no idea how life threatening my radio hobby was until this video. Thank you.
Just got my BF-F8HP. This video is invaluable. Thank-you for introducing the important settings and making it easy to follow along!
Is that model better than the 5r or what's the difference?
@@Lithium023 No. It is not better.
@@Lithium023 Yes! Technically, the BF-F8HP is the 3rd gen UV-5R. It was designed specifically for U.S. users. It has a bigger battery and a V-85 high gain antenna. If you're just starting out though, the UV-5R is more than enough, truly.
You beat the fire out of the manuals that arrive with my radios.
your much more polite in your early days. I like the new you and the pencil much better. Still the best bowfwang content
Thanks for putting out these videos. Great humor. I've been a ham for 2 years and have bought Icom and a Yeasu radios because "that's the type of rigs I should have".
I had previously bought 5-- 82L's beofangs to put in go bags. I have found I still use the beofangs more than the high price units. After listening to you, I ordered 2 5R's. Neat radios, and so far, no one can tell which radio I am talking on.
Keep up the good work.
Your sense of humor is unique and original and your technical explanations are so useful and easy to understand,,,,those are the reasons I stick to your channel! Good work!
Dude, you're awesome. You alone changed my mind from getting a ham license to getting a GMRS license. Keep up the good work
The Technician exam was just slightly easier than figuring out how to pay for the GMRS license on the FCC's CORES site.
Lol, that is soooo true!🤣😂🤣👍
soooo...i am so new to this that i think caressing my baofeng is how to get it started now...and i am not ashamed!
I just bought a couple of these radios for myself and a friend for when the work ENDS. But seriously of all the videos to watch and follow, you've been the best to understand, follow, and the best sense of humor. Sending love from Boise, Idaho
love this type of video, actually showing how to use and program the radio. Being a licensed HAM I have no clue on these radios, never did anything after getting my license and enjoy all of your content. You actually got me motivated to start learning more and now I have my GMRS license and Midland MXT400 and now I have the UV5R for our travels.
Fun fact about me: I have yet to not smile whilst watching one of his videos.
It's because you want him to pin your dickhead! Makes me smile.
😭🐖
Are you a Sad Ham?
good video, I feel your frustration with "sad hams".
@@kl7dzqyour so right, a radio is a radio is a radio...
Thanks
October 2024 - 2 new UV-5R’s and unlocked them with no problem. It did NOT erase my channels or any settings! Thank you, may you have many fars in your life!
Liking and subscribing for simply not begging to like and subscribe. Thank you for being one of the rare breed in the hobby that make things fun to learn for us newbies. Now let me go back to change the settings on my state of the art and best engineered ham radio uv5r, over and out.
Just want to say I love your humor. Especially made my day 3:09, you are like me, I use sarcasm (for me, too much!). Best wishes, Dave WA4NID
P.S. - I am also a simpleton so I appreciate your choices in the settings!
P.S.S. - Roger Beep - I KNOW you are sarcastic about that, right? OMG that's the most annoying thing from CBers! Even if you were serious, I love you anyways since it was SO HILARIOUS! Thanks for that!
Something is wrong, you are not looking at your Baofeng with adoring eyes like you usually do. I hope that Wouxun isn't causing "interference "
A clear and present danger, for sure. 😁
when you said you didn't have ham license, I immediately "liked" and subscribed.
My wife has been injured by spurious emissions, we have three of them, call signs Unicorn, T-Rex and Monster.
I really like how you point to things with a magnet that’s almost the same size as your finger. Precision
🤣 I was laughing when he brought that thing out! I'm glad I'm not the only one!
Same exact settings for the '2nd' best designed HAM radio Quansheng UV-R50. Great tutorial! Too bad I didn't know about spurious emissions earlier. I killed a rabbit 50 yds away, a filling fell out and I melted a chocolate bar I had in my shirt pocket.
Funny!
My prosthetic leg fell off when I tried the very same thing. The rabbit survived, though.
@@RobSchofield My prosthetic leg doesn't fall off, but when I key up one of my World's Finest UV5R's, my Ottobock knee goes nuts and starts kicking everyone around me!
Every time I transmit, the moon looks closer...
Well you can always shove that license in your ........
I stumbled across your videos about a year ago and I’ve been a subscriber ever since and have gotten my GMRS license and I am now the proud owner of several GMRS radios and three UV5R’s. Keep those videos coming sir you are great.
A small group of us have bought GMRS radios. We're all appreciative of your dry wit and your excellent instruction method. This video in particular was very helpful.
Fantastic video thank you! Also very much appreciate you taking the time to add chapters for each setting. I wish more TH-cam people did things like that.

one thing i'll add on the squelch. you can always hold the little black button on the side under the transmit button to open the squelch temporarily. great content. thanks for the channel
Thanks for posting these tips. I am, however, struggling with the differentiating sarcasm from opinion at various time, since I am a newbie at this.
When it comes to Randy, get used to it. That's what makes his videos so special.
Ask Sheldon Cooper how to tell when he is being sarcastic. Actually, he usually has some eye rolls or other tells.
Be careful responding otherwise you could end up in a J. Aubry situation. No such as a citizen arrest anymore.
What a great idea!!! Thanks for sharing that
I just ordered my first radio, a UV-5R for SHTF.

Set it to LOW, that's it.
Thank you for making this serious but funny video. I always lock the keypad before handing the radio to others so that they won’t mess up the settings.
And so it doesn't go off accidentally
@@romans1117 Baofaeng UV5R's don't just "go off". You have to pull the trigger ... err ... push the PTT.

I know.. and it does nothing to improve how well the squelch works/does not work.
Well I’m so used to strong signals I never even noticed, so I apologize if I wasted any of your time.
