This is the 3rd or so time I’ve watched this video. How did I miss our esteemed Assistant Health Secretary in the background. Your brand of humor is so on point. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!
I’m an 81-year-old lady, and I want to get these ham radios to communicate with our son and his wife who live 10 miles away. Will this do the trick? I really enjoyed your manual. It’s simple, concise and slow enough for an old person like me to understand thank you so much.
It depends on your location. These radios work on frequenties that require a sight to sight connection. What I mean with this, is that every object between you and the other opperator, decreases the range drastically. I live in a heavy populated area and my radio covers less then a mile reliably. What I mean with reliably, is that you can move with the radio without any trouble. I have also tested around 10 km. I stood in a small flat (15 meters high) and the other person stood in his attic of his house. But we still couldn't get a connection. But, still you could buy a set and try to see if you could achieve 10 miles. Maybe your area has less noise or has fewer objects between your houses, compared to mine.
About SAD HAMs. I have been following your channel for about two years. I have found your content to be useful and entertaining. I am amazed by the negative feedback that you have received. I have worked in the computer field since 1965, and have been a ham for a long time. I have met many sad hams and routinely ignore them. They do not represent the majority of hams that I have known. In the current ham community I think that most hams avoid the sad ones as they can be as irritating to us as to you.
Just got a pair of these, due to my friend’s recommendation, thanks. I let my friend to set it up, and was pleasantly surprised,It works perfectly from my friend’s house that is about 12 ~ 15 miles away. Cheap but incredibly little radio this thing is.

Right-to-the-point! That is a very useful bit of kit. It even has FM so you can listen to domestic (music) radio channels. In England we are advised to listen to BBC Radio 4 for updates in SHTF scenarios. It is essentially a marine radio, the standard practice is to start out with channel 16. So everyone has that on as standard (ships, boats coastguard) and then when you want to start a conversation you switch to an 'empty' channel. They also have two power settings. So if you want to talk to a boat that might be 100 meters away you use the channel with less power. This extends it's use time and doesn't stop others out of range using the same channel. Sadly they don't say it's waterproof. But for the price and features an excellent bit of kit.
Thank you. After watching millions of your videos, I finally got my first uv5r. Mine is rhe 8w version. This was definitely helpfutl. Would have bought one a year ago but I own a Jeep too and well, $.

As a BF UV-5R newb, I consider myself particularly lucky to have stumbled across your videos. As soon as I realized the black rubber thingy could be used as a handle, I decided to buy a pair. Of radios, that is. I have, so far, been unable to keep a solitary sip of my morning coffee inside my mouth while watching your YT channel. May have to start collecting the T-shirts as well. Anyway... as a non-conformist, I am having difficultly finding info on programming the little jewels using my MAC. Thanks to your videos, I can program the radios by hand, of course, and have used the provided manual to light my barbecue. FYI have successfully loaded CHIRP onto my laptop but the programming cable that came in the package from the big box retailer along with all the other trinkets is either (a) junk, or (b) the driver provided is meant to confuse and occupy my time while the ground invasion commences. Not sure which. Anybody out there have any luck using a Mac to successfully program their bofungs w/ CHIRP? I'm gonna wear my fingers out otherwise...
I use CHIRP on all of my Macs with zero issues, as do millions of others.. I have never needed to install any driver - i just plugged in the cable and it worked. If you suspect the cable is junk I recommend the "red cable" from BuyTwoWayRadios.com - those cables work with MacOS.
At a local lunch meeting with some local readiness group guys... I ALMOST caressed the front of a UV-5R in Randyesque fashion... I just couldn't bring myself to do it as I knew at least one other guy would have busted-up laughing. Stroke it Randy! LOL
I became a member to buy Randy a pencil sharpener with the dozens of dollars this brings him each month. Still waiting for him to show us the day we can stream video or do group video over GMRS.
I’m hoping it’s a gag, I don’t know why it bothers me so much. It’s almost perfect, but the best is when the sharpened lead is broken at a 90° and just hanging. Now I look for the borked pencil every demo. Why is that my thing?
I've got to be slow!! I watched these instructional videos till I'm blue in the face. Not my normal color. And final got how to program channels and save them. With that said I'd still be in the "back woods" without this dudes videos. Thanks!
I have a question regarding this unit, sir. When using CHIRP to integrate frequencies, does the frequency offset integrate into the radio, or does the user have to manually enter the value into the radio once integrated?
I’m sore you’ve figured it out by now but I’m 99.9% sure it’s a manual entry on chirp. I’ve never used chirp personally but I’ve watched videos on it and there’s a column for the frequency offset to be entered
I just order my uv-5r but haven't received it yet. However. Since I've now seen your highly insightful and instructional video I can promptly throw the manual in the trash with confidence! Thank you. 😂
Randy, if this was truly a UV-5R Quick-Start guide for dummies you would include the one thing missing from Section 5 of the manual. ✔ 5.1 Attach the antenna. ✔ 5.2 Attach the belt clip. ✔ 5.3 Plug in the speaker mic/headset. ✔ 5.4 Attach the battery ❌ Attach the wrist strap to the strap buckle. I hope in your next UV-5R guide for dummies you include a 5 minute segment on how to perform the 2nd most important task after enabling the roger beep.
Wow your vids are so good Im actually thinking of throwing away my manual -as a Tribute- Instruction is top notch! Im listening to the inner workings of my little town now . Thanks great work
Thanks for this detailed guide and for keeping it as simple as possible. Question: I have a midland FRS radio ($39 for 2) and just got a UV-5R (applying for license as well). I was testing the 5R (receiving only!) and noticed that channel 18 on the midland FRS received a clear broadcast (very clear and loud) but the VR5 was not picking up the signal. I adjusted the squelch to 2 and I could hear lots of static along with the broadcast this time (but very weak). Frequency is 462.6250 (channel 18). With a friend we tested the channel and even his scanner bc125 was not picking up any broadcast. So it seems like the midland FRS radio have something both the 5R and the bc125 do not have? What do you think might be going on here?
I usually program display B with alphanumeric tags and disable it on display A. This way, I can see what frequency is in a channel easily. Dis you bite the end off that pencil right before you started recording?
@@jrlaramore1 I have my license so I can activate the flashlight into flashy flashy mode to point out these comments . I triangulate Strang ulate then mass debates like this don't happen
I accidentally pushed the talk button while scanning through my local channels. The SWAT team was at my house in 5 minutes and they were gonna gas me with Zyklon B until Tom Cruize showed up dressed as a nahtzee and blew himself up, saving the world.

I appreciate you making this cuz i been reading the manul and the extra guide book i purchased for it and still havibg difficukt time understanding everything. Also my package came with what i believe are 3 different antennas. What one do i use
Excellent guidance and not only this video, but all of your videos, sir! I am a total rookie in this area and have the GT3 version but currently the range of the radio disappoints. It is used in town (now, but really needed for emergencies in my part of the world!), not line of sight but no hills or such, obstructing. What confounds me' is that the "cheapie" Baofengs with 11 set channels, outperform the GT3's! I understand that higher frequencies have lesser range, but I an sure it is only programming parameters on my side. Without trying the decipher all the complicated calculations re the Arial lengths vs frequencies, wide or narrow, etc, etc, what would you suggest, and without putting you on the spot, the optimum settings should be for max range (within limits of course)?!
You forgot to mention that if you even so much as push the transmitt button without a license that the FCC will come kick down your door, throw you in jail for 10 - 15 year and give you a $150,000 fine.
Informative. I don't get much of "ham stuff", but this video i understood the basics. I don't get the offset frequency stuff at all. I just want to use as long distance walkie talkie

Great video. Retired physics prof. here. You are an excellent educator.
At a local lunch meeting with some local readiness group guys... I ALMOST caressed the front of a UV-5R in Randyesque fashion... I just couldn't bring myself to do it as I knew at least one other guy would have busted-up laughing. Stroke it Randy! LOL
I lost my copy of the User Manual? No.
I enjoyed your video? Indeed I did.
Thank you so much.
Now I'm curious if GTV would be allowed. In ham radio there's ATV(live) & SSTV(Slow Scan TV, kinda like a fax).
@@RKingis as of now I think it is. But what the overlords at the FC's do, who knows. Let the IRS at it and it will pay PPF (Pay Per Frame).
I've got to be slow!! I watched these instructional videos till I'm blue in the face. Not my normal color. And final got how to program channels and save them. With that said I'd still be in the "back woods" without this dudes videos. Thanks!
For absolute beginners, would you please mention something about licenses? Do we need a license to listen or is that just for communication?
You do not need a license to listen.
I just got my 2 radios off Temu, nice looking kinda heavy. Thanks for posting, helps a ton. 👍👍
Your background pictures 😂
They are stunning and brave
Dude looks like a ….. dude with a wig. A sure sign of mental illness or part of the circus that is the White House.
It’s ma’m !
Isn't that a photo of the guy who is a woman "technically speaking"?🤔😅
@@davek88 that's Admiral Dick Tucker 🏳️⚧️
Now these are the best instructions that I have been given. Thank you
This video is golden
Thanks for the explanations. You, unlike the booklet that comes with the radio, are easy to understand
Thank you. 😂
Have you ever noticed the settings not being able to be changed in the radio's menu after using the tidradio bluetooth programmer?
No.
Just got mine in the mail today! Working to get my license and hope to get it soon!
Same here my friend
License?!?
Why do you have a picture of a tyrant on your wall?
She's a great ,brave man
Fantastic sense of humor. Kudos n hats off good sir!
✔ 5.4 Attach the battery
❌ Attach the wrist strap to the strap buckle.
I hope in your next UV-5R guide for dummies you include a 5 minute segment on how to perform the 2nd most important task after enabling the roger beep.
Many thanks for this impeccable segment . No bullshit and straight to the point.
An excellent quickie video.
Thank you for dumbing it down for us. I am still a bit befuddled but at least now I have a starting point.
I usually program display B with alphanumeric tags and disable it on display A. This way, I can see what frequency is in a channel easily.
Dis you bite the end off that pencil right before you started recording?
Hey, I do that too! A shows channel name, B shows frequency.
The level of sarcasm is priceless. Love the broken lead on the pencil. Says it all
Signed,
Your friend in sarcasm.!!
Just the video I needed! Thank you! Now you need a picture of the nuclear waste management dir (former) for the white house on the wall of shame
I was wondering if I was the only person that noticed that. 😂
Thank you for all the effort you put into teaching!
I see what you did with the background photo.
You are cranky older man that reminds me of myself in ways. Keep doing what you're doing my friend! More videos please.
How can you make this video when you don’t even have a ham license??? This is preposterous! Just kidding
LOL. This guy’s term Radio Karen’s is hilarious and spot-on. Bunch of self-righteous turds. They really almost turned me off of radio.
Haha also remember. This is a free country.
Not having a ham license doesn't make him an idiot, idiot. The license is for broadcasting. He is teaching
I recently got a 2 pack of these for myself and housemates. Still need to get one more so we all have one. I appreciate you making this cuz i been reading the manul and the extra guide book i purchased for it and still havibg difficukt time understanding everything. Also my package came with what i believe are 3 different antennas. What one do i use
And Make Sure To Get A Extended Lithium Ion Battery And A Nagoya NA-771 Antenna!
Thnx cause of u I was finally able to figure out how to program this
So we’re not going to talk about that pencil?
Excellent video, and just for those who have the UVB2 version, it's exactly the same instructions, and to delete a channel..#28.
Thank you.
Please sharpen my pencil
You are an incredibly great teacher!
Str8 to the point. A very simple and eficient explanation. Many thanks from Romania.
You forgot to mention that if you even so much as push the transmitt button without a license that the FCC will come kick down your door, throw you in jail for 10 - 15 year and give you a $150,000 fine.
Lol gae
Are you joking
How do they locate ? Just curious.
Informative. I don't get much of "ham stuff", but this video i understood the basics. I don't get the offset frequency stuff at all. I just want to use as long distance walkie talkie
Oh my God you have no lead in your pencil. 🤣
