In this video I show you how to find NOAA Weather and Emergency Frequencies, how to add those NOAA channels/frequencies into your UV-5R, and save them, and how to scan through them - all with no cable/no computer needed - right from the keypad. The NOAA frequencies and channels are not just for the weather! The federal and local government also use these emergency channels after major SHTF events such as hurricanes, tornadoes and even earthquakes. In a major SHFT event, the NOAA emergency channels can be essential.

A variable frequency oscillator (VFO) in electronics is an oscillator whose frequency can be tuned (i.e., varied) over some range. It is a necessary component in any tunable radio transmitter or receiver that works by the superheterodyne principle, and controls the frequency to which the apparatus is tuned.

VFO stands for Variable Frequency Oscillator. In the context of radio communication, a VFO refers to a circuit or feature that allows the user to adjust and tune the frequency of the radio transmitter or receiver within a certain range.
In amateur radio, a VFO is commonly found in transceivers, which are devices that combine both transmitting and receiving capabilities. The VFO allows the operator to select and adjust the frequency they wish to communicate on. By changing the VFO's settings, users can tune into different frequencies to communicate with other radio operators, listen to broadcasts, or access various radio services.
VFOs provide flexibility in choosing frequencies and enable operators to adapt to changing conditions or engage in different modes of communication. They can typically be adjusted by using knobs, buttons, or digital controls on the radio equipment.
Overall, the VFO is a fundamental component of radio equipment that enables users to tune into and select different frequencies for communication or listening purposes.

What you say used to be true but nobody puts VFOs in radio's anymore. Its all digital Phased Locked Loops (PLL) now. They are putting VFO on the button because of tradition not technical correctness.

Seems that I am two yrs late on this question but I'll try anyway. I have emergency channels and lots of ham channels on my uv5r radios. I can and do scan these channels frequently. Question is: if I put my local NOAA channels in my radio, will it stop on these channels every time it goes around during scanning my other channels? If so is there a way to program these channels for use but not have to have them on rotation?

    • @chrisgullett4332
      @chrisgullett4332 ปีที่แล้ว

Get this, power lines run right over my house, and the only thing I can ever pickup when scanning is the NOAA weather frequencies. I take that back, because I can also pick up 10 channels in the 54 MHZ range. Those channels in the 54 MHZ range are just the NOAA weather channels. So at my house I can only pick up NOAA weather channels in 162 and 54 MHZ ranges, and nothing else. Whether it be GMRS/FRS, MURS, HAM radios etc, I literally cannot get any signals at my house except for the weather channels. It is clearly the power lines causing it. I have to leave the house to get any signals. Being in my situation would make you be happy you at least get the weather channels. What makes things weirder is the first signal that always comes in as I move away from my house is a signal in the 119 MHZ range, and it too is just a guy repeating the weather, but it is not the NOAA channels. I am guessing it is some weather thing for planes. Power lines interfere with and kill radio signals. When I was a kid the woman next door had a CB and power lines ran beside our houses, and in certain rooms it would ruin all radio signals, but at least you could still get signals. At my house I cannot get any signals regardless of the room, or even in the yard. So hearing the voice of the NOAA guy is better than nothing.

      A few possibilities:
      1) you aren't on the right frequency
      2) you have a tone/code enabled
      3) Your squelch is set too high
      4) You are out of range of the stations
      5) Your radio is defective
...i doubt your radio is defective..

Your videos are informative but my BF-F8HP at only $60 is essentially a UV-5R on steroids being that it transmits at 8 watts versus 5 watts so why do you keep saying the UV-5R is the best ham radio dollar for dollar? It seems like you’re obsessed with the UV-5R yet the BF-F8HP is better, has a higher capacity stock battery and has a higher power output for slightly more money. By the way, you can delete channel 0 or any channel.

Thank you for all of your videos! I am new to the game and you are extremely helpful.
One question, in channel mode can you save a channel in the lower B spot? I apologize for my ignorance!

He cares. If he didn't care, these would be like a 50s PSA.
Please spare yourself- don't search "50s PSAs"

    Evening, NotaRubicon...
Since I'm old now, and no longer follow directions very well, I'm hoping that once I can figure out how to program my new-still-in-the-box-on-my-dining-room-table UV5R - gen3 with the CHIRT software, these NOAA channels will be included? Sure hope so, anyway.
Yeah, I went ahead and purchased a pair of these keen little transceivers along with the upgraded Nagoya antennas, the larger 3800 milliamp batteries, and the necessary to transfer data cable.
It's exciting stuff, and this tutorial being the exception...I've so far enjoyed your channel very much.
    Thank you, and take care...

As a reformed Sad Ham, I appreciate your reviews. Although I am somewhat frightened by your intro music. 🙂
