The UV5R instructions work for the UV9G radio as well. This vid took all of the frustration out of trying to figure out how the radio actually worked. The enclosed instructions with the radio are lacking. This vid should come with the radio from the factory.

I am a licensed ham. As far as HT's, I only use the UV-5R. I don't see any need at this point to start spending hundreds of dollars to talk when this does the job just fine.

It's not Chinese junk, it's junk made in China, lol, it is a very useful gadget at a very good price tag, a few years ago I was on some website expressing interest in these radios, low and behold, 5 days later I received a Baofeng uvr2+ in the mail free of charge, very unexpected to say the least.

It's the best option for most people who need radios a step above FRS. I have cheap FRS radios and these are cheap GMRS radios. They are different and better because they are different systems. I appreciate having both respectively. But GMRS is giving me better range capabilities and more but it's a radio we care about radioing here. This radio will radio more for farther, that makes it betterer lol.

Thanks to this channel I finally learned how to program my local repeater and other repeaters into my uv5r. Also, did you know the ISS (international space station)transmits on frequency 145.80 MHz and receives signals at either 144.49 or 145.20 MHz, depending on its orbital location. You can pick it up in your uv5r but you need to download the ISS app to track when is passing by your zone.

I bought FOUR of these many years ago. They are GREAT little radios and, believe me, I have gone through a LOT of ham radio gear during my 40 years of being a ham radio operator. This was a concise and thorough explanation of each of the settings. Well done. Most of the settings I leave set to off. A few you covered I wondered about, and you made it clear. Now do a video explaining how to use it as a weather radio, scan police and fire bands and so on. I have dinked around a little with that, but you could save me a lot of dinking around time by just explaining it! Yeah, sometimes the Chinese actually make decent stuff for not much money. I don't particularly like it, but it is what it is.

Thanks for taking the time to do an excellent video on all the menu settings of the 5R. I bought one recently and I am amazed by the performance of it. As a military communications guy from ages ago, it just stuns me that a radio of that quality can be bought for $25. And don't get me started about SDRs. The modern equivalent of a forty thousand dollar spectrum analyzer from 1990 can now be had for thirty dollars.
I will note that the 5R's squelch setting does absolutely nothing. It is either completely off (0), or slightly on (1-9). This appears to be a firmware issue, and easily corrected. If you know someone at Baofeng, can you please notify them of this embarrassing failure? It's like selling a toaster that only has two settings: slightly warm, or charred.
Please consider for a future show a demonstration and evaluation of that poor man's repeater, that Baofeng cable setup that connects two 5Rs. It is going to blow my ever-loving mind if I can put together a hilltop repeater using a solar panel, a battery, two 5Rs, and a cable for under a hundred dollars.
Do I think the FCC is going to arrest me if I transmit to my neighbor's FRS radio using my 5R? No, I doubt it. I'm guessing the feds have got bigger fish to fry.
And do continue ignoring the sad hams. I likely have pulled more cable than they've seen on spools. They're just jealous, as my mother liked to say. They're jealous that they're still using an R-390 (if they even know what that is.)

Thank you Randy for listening. While "Ask Randy" was all about questions, I'm greatful you read those like mine and others, which were not.
I just bought my first GMRS radio after watching your video on the Baofeng UV-9G. (Way back when) When it showed up earlier the expected I was like Wow! - how do I use it with out reading the instruction manual. Which makes no sense to me as a newbie! Heck just "Ask Randy"..🤣
Now it's all starting to make sense! Thank you so much for the walk through set up....etc. I'm one step closer to having a clue.
Thank you for making entertaining content. In the last week we've seen some of our larger 200 & 500 k YT channels delete or not even post based on negative comments. Never easy no matter what size your channel is. Just happy you put such a positive smiling poke at those that come at you. We need more of that. Life's to short to be negative. We have to much of that going on in the world and US right now. We don't need any more!
Thank you again I can't repeat that enough. Even if I can't do it yet on my UV-9G. I can in this comment. THANK YOU!!! Thank You, thank you..

Best Baofeng menu description video I’ve seen. However, at about 20.02 minutes there is an error. SFT-D is the direction of the shift, + or - (up or down). The Offset is how many kilohertz or megahertz to offset. You need to use both to setup a repeater in VFO or Memory mode. In GMRS, all 8 repeater shifts are the same direction and offset from your receive frequency. In Amateur Radio shifts may be + or - depending on where in the band you are. The offsets vary by band. The 2 meter band offset is 600 kHz and the 70 centimeter band offset is 5 MHz.

This one time, I was taught how to use a PRC119. I would’ve much preferred learning from you. Your sarcasm and simplistic instructions would be perfect for us crayon eaters.
Thanks to your videos I was able to set mine up right out of the box to be functional.

Very useful information. 👍You confirmed what I suspected about those 40 settings, the majority of them can be ignored by most UV-5R users. Thanks for pointing out the ones we really need to know.

Now that I have watched this video, and I went through and did some additional setup on a newer version of this particular model, STILL being a greenie, I am going to send this video to a much more experienced ham, WHO KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT BAOFENGS, and has a competitor radio, the Yasuer, but understands the concepts of the features, and let him have at it on completing the setup on my radio.....
BTW, shortly after changing a couple of the settings you discussed here, I IMMEDIATELY got a signal on a nearby repeater my friend input into my radio that I had not previously been able to get a signal on....
    Thank you for this video....

Bought a new preprogrammed UV-5R 2.5 years ago and stored it away. Got it out today, no display. Display lit up, all other regular function, but no display graphics. Hit factory reset and turned it off for 10 minutes. When i turned it back on, full function resumed. Sweet.

Love your videos and sense of humor🤣 The amount of info and support for the Baofeng is amazing. In 2 days I was able to use CHIRP, configure my units and find a couple of repeaters in my area. Mind you I have a good technical background as a car mechanic and IT telecom instructor. This dynamic reminds me of the Harley versus Japanese motorcycles…a couple of years ago I was driving a Vulcan Voyager and for a fraction of the cost it was more comfortable than most Harleys. Those radios get the job done, period. Fun fact: sometimes transmitting will screw up my wireless trackball USB transmitter, forcing me to shut off the mouse and put it back on as a remedy. And yes, I’ve checked the battery and this never happens otherwise.

I read through your link that you had to discontinue your ASK ME A QUESTION resource that you had maintained before. I’ll tell you Nerds for any topic are invaluable when they can communicate as well as you do. Sad to see such a resource go away, no matter the reason. You know its not a sin, to be paid to offer advice on subjects of which you are well informed. Have you ever considered a toll line? Nothing over the top like the old 900 numbers that I still have on my speed dial. But maybe a .50 a minute thing. Kidding aside I would certainly be happy to use such a resource. And I am quite sure that I am not the only one. 10 minutes on the phone with you could assure my making the right choice in equipment and that saves me money right out of the gate. Many thanks, REP
