The first time I had ever even seen Lara Fabian was when my wife and I were flipping channels and stopped on PBS to see what this David Foster Hitman thing was. She came out and sang "Caruso". We were frozen solid for the whole performance, jaws hanging open. When it ended, we just looked at each other absolutely stunned. We rewatched it 3 more times before calling the kids in and forcing them to watch it.

The writer of this song, Lucio Dalla (from Bologna, northern Italy), wrote this in 1986 while staying in one of the rooms where Enrico Caruso, former famous tenor (From Neaples, southern Italy), spent the final days of his life. Caruso was 48-years-old when he died, and a few years before Caruso died, he married Dorothy Park Benjamin who was 20 years younger. They had a baby girl they named Gloria. Lucio Dalla wrote this song while imagining how Caruso, who knew he was dying, would have said goodbye to his young wife - the love of his life.
curiosity: in sicilian dialect the word caruso means (ragazzo)=boy.

But then she'll highlight colours I'm only vaguely aware of and show me how important they are, too. She has absolute mastery of her art form and uses it to pull people *into* her realm to show them the beauty that is there as opposed to standing on a pedistal and showing that mastery off.

Igor Krutoy was so damned right when he said a few years ago that Lara was the only singer in the world who could sing about love properly.
I'm so happy and proud of having had a chance to attend one of her concerts and even talked to her after it. Hello Elizabeth! Great reaction and great analysis. Yes, Lara is fluent in Italian because Italian is one of her native languages from her mother's side who is Sicilian, the other is French from her father's side who is Belgian. Lara lived in Italy until she was 5 years old, then her dad moved the family back to Belgium.
Caruso is a song that usually male opera tenor legends like Pavarotti, Domingo, Carreras, Kaufman and Bocelli has in their repertoire because it takes a masterful, powerful voice to deliver it to perfection. I'm Lara's age and I haven't come across any other female singer yet who came even close to perform it like Lara did.
She gave an absolute masterclass on how to perform such an emotionally charged song without losing the ability to carry out every single note. I think it is truly one her unique talents.
I've been following her career over 25 years now and I've seen her live on stage a handful of times. It's absolutely remarkable that Lara's voice is near studio quality when you hear her live. Few people asked me if her voice is really this good or it's just a studio editing for the tape. I can honestly say that her voice is like this in real life. Yes, every live tape is edited for mass production to clear up background noise and enhance certain parts of the music, but it's true with every artist no matter if you are just a newcomer or world class singer like Bocelli. So, yes, Lara is this good and then some!

Lara Fabian is one of my favourite singers. Some think she's over-the-top. I suppose she is, compared to your average American-styled pop singer. But she's more about the dramatic European music. French chansons, Italian drama... And yes, influences of musical theatre. I guess for you, as for me, she's not over-the-top, she hits that sweet-spot with her amazing skill and expression.

The passion, the pain and the hurt she has singing it makes me feel so much more connected than with her English songs. Those are just songs, those are just Celine Dion' ish.. while her French songs are so pure and Lara Fabian only..

I love her sooooooooo much! Her tone, use of vocal fry, the switching between “Singing” and the more “spoken” lines are ALL stunning but the thing that always breaks me the most is how she even weaponizes her BREATHS! You KNOW she knows how to breathe silently but she still makes sure you HEAR that breath... those gasps... to make you even feel the desperation in those “silent” moments! I’d LOVE to hear you react to her performance of Comme Ils Dissent... the song itself is beautiful (it’s written by Charles Aznivore about being a gay man... and even more, a Drag Queen, in the world) but the way she embodies and performs is just breathtaking...

She not only speaks French, Italian, English and Spanish fluently, she writes songs in all of them. She even refers to herself something like "a songwriter who sings." She also understands several more and sings very very competently (according to native speakers) in a total of 12.
Perhaps you can react to some of her originals: Broken Vow (Josh Groban covered, Barbra Streisand made arrangements to cover it), Adagio (that Dimash covered in a very different interpretation) or - the one I'm desperate to understand better from a craft standpoint - You're Not From Here. That last one is exstremely difficult but she keeps it sounding gentle and seems easy peasy. All three are in English, favorite versions from live From Lara With Love concert.
Or, if you want to see the Rock Star!! side of her: she teamed up with Francophone superstar Johnny Hallyday on his signature Requiem Pour un fou. He split the song into two voices just for her. She goes just as deep with the emotions -they're just very different emotions than the ones from her ballads. 😃 The performance is amazing with a full orchestra and large chorale.
Sarah Vaughan and Lara Fabian are the only two singers that stop me in my tracks and stun me every single time. I can't believe, at my age, I've become a superstan of someone. 🤣
