I don’t know how many times I listened to you commenting this Lara’s performance and each time I think you are so preciously right. The overall Artistry put into this peculiar moment is magical and translate the amount of natural ability, hard work and training she engaged into it.
In short as a Story Singer she keeps your attention and imprint her Soul into yours.

The writer of this song, Lucio Dalla (from Bologna, northern Italy), wrote this in 1986 while staying in one of the rooms where Enrico Caruso, former famous tenor (From Neaples, southern Italy), spent the final days of his life. Caruso was 48-years-old when he died, and a few years before Caruso died, he married Dorothy Park Benjamin who was 20 years younger. They had a baby girl they named Gloria. Lucio Dalla wrote this song while imagining how Caruso, who knew he was dying, would have said goodbye to his young wife - the love of his life.
curiosity: in sicilian dialect the word caruso means (ragazzo) boy.
    Greetings from Firenze (Florence) Italy

Lara said, as a vocal coach and artistic director in Star Academy Quebec this year : “How to emote without impacting your voice? Sing the emotions in your head, feel the emotions in your heart, but keep your throat free”.
When I heard this, this last note from Caruso came immediately to my mind. Or some notes from Je suis malade. I am glad that you mentionned it.

Caruso, is an italian song, written, composed and performed in 1986 by Lucio Dalla as a tribute to Enrico Caruso, the most famous tenor of his time (late 19th / early 20th century). He was the first global singing superstar.
The story is about the last days of Enrico Caruso, he knows he is dying, and he is remembering all his career on stage and telling his much younger wife how much he loves her.
It has very quickly become a classic of italia music and the biggest names have covered it (Julio Iglesias, Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, …. and of course Luciano Pavarotti).
But for many, Lara's version is the best ever, as she was able, with her unique ability to convey the emotions of a song, to reveal the real sad story written by Lucio Dalla.
I was told that Lucio Dalla himself, after hearing this performance, said that she made it her song and this is the best version he has heard from it.
For Lara, this song is really important as this is a kind of anthem for Italy, and she is so much connected to this country. She spent the first few years of her life there with her sicilian mother and grandma. Her husband is also sicilian.

I ignore if at some point she has felt "stage fright", but in all the performances I have seen her thanks to @Eric Sicard, Lara has literally "eaten" the stage, it seems she was born to be showing her art to everyone; a wonderful gift to the art and to all of us.

Love your reaction here and you got to be one of the best at this and knowledgeable as well. A great combo. FYI - The song is about Enrico Caruso, as you pointed out, but some may not know the rest of the story behind the song, the subject, the author, and this songs writing. Caruso, the greatest tenor of the early modern era was so big, such a massive international star, he was Elvis, Pavarotti and Michael Jackson in one. He died young in 1921 but he made it to the phonogram era so his amazing voice was captured and he was nearly individually responsible for phonogragh sales among the wealthy in those very early days. Everyone had to get one so they could listen to Caruso and invite their friends over. The author, Lucio Dalla, imagined those final dieing days with his young wife (with whom he had a very public affair - she was an heiress). He mentions a room, on a terrace, on the Gulf of Surrento that Caruso and his wife actually stayed at often and which Dalla visited. FYI - Lara sings "Surrientto" instead of Surrento, not a mistake it is quit purposeful, as Neopolitan Italians - Caruso was born in Napoli - pronounce it that way. Lara misses NOTHING! It is a love song, a deep love song, but a tear jerker as well.

Hi. Lara's native languages are Italian and French. She speaks both since she was 3 years old. Then she learned English and Spanish when she was 10 years old. Currently she is able to speak and compose songs in Italian, French, English, Spanish fluently. But she is also able to have a little conversation in Russian, Portuguese (she evn co-wrote a song in Portuguese with perfect accent, as a Brazilian I can say, the song it's called "Meu Grande Amor", which means My greatest love), and Flemish (Flemish is the native language of her father, she was born in the Flemish part of Belgium country, her daddy if from there. But she was raised in Italy till her 5/6 years old. From 8 to 18 years old she attended the Brussels Royal Music Conservatory in Belgium. She learned how to sing, play piano, guitar, write and read music core, her teachers were Master in bel canto and opera, but she decided to focus in the pop style, even though she is able to sing in operatic style, and she uses her bel canto skills in her pop songs, with her perfect breath control and pasagios. She is able to hold C5 and D5 in chest voice for over 20 seconds, without strain the larynx. Vídeo bellow shows she singing in 12 languages.

👉Enrico Caruso (*1873 in Naples, † 1921 ibid; actually Errico Caruso) was an Italian opera singer. He is considered the most famous lyrical tenor of the early 20th century and one of the most important singers in the world of opera.
Caruso was famous for his baritone-like timbre and stage presence. In a performance of La Bohème he sang an aria for the suddenly voiceless bass so convincingly that no one in the audience noticed.
Caruso established a new, exemplary style of singing in which the focus was not on beautiful performance but on becoming one with the character being portrayed.
Caruso is the name everyone knows and to which every opera singer is compared. Those who have seen him describe the onset of his voice with the warm power of an organ.
Caruso still holds the record of 863 appearances on the Metropolitan Opera stage.
And it was Caruso who initiated the triumph of the record with his work.
Caruso's generosity was legendary. For example, during his most successful years at the Metropolitan Opera, he gave almost all employees Christmas presents.
His sense of humor was also famous. Again and again he joked with his stage colleagues, for example sewing up a sleeve of a coat that a colleague in La Bohème had to wear during the performance, or filling water in a discarded hat that someone had to wear in the performance.
3 years before his death he married the American millionaire daughter Dorothy Park Benjamin. With her he had a daughter, Gloria, at the age of 45.
He died at the age of 48 from protracted pleurisy and blood poisoning. (www)

The lines about blood are double entendres. They tell the depth of the emotion in Caruso's cirulatory system, but Caruso slso died at the age of 48 of peritonitis...which is a blood infection caused by an internal rupture.

There are so many talented vocal coaches on TH-cam, I've seen so many. But out of all of them, you are the one I love the most. Beyond your skill and deep knowledge of the subject, there is an ability to capture interpretative details, to capture emotions and every nuance of a performance, that is simply extraordinary. You are over the top!

I always assumed this song was older, when it would turn up in the rep of one tenor or another, and I suppose it was written to sound that way, like one of the Neapolitan standards. Ms. Fabian's performance, however, put all those others into the shade. She tells such a vivid and emotional story, her Italian is salty with the sea air, and she gives us a very specific character, in a particular time and place, abd feelings about mortality and grief that are universal. So much feeling, so many chills (especially on that rising arpeggio) and yet its never overdone or contrived. And she always stays on top of her technique - even when she seems like she might in the next moment burst into tears - or faint, or scream - she's still in control, and brings her voice back to a stable place. Your heart is in your mouth, but you also know that she will get through it, so you can safely surrender to the drama. It's that ability to sit on the edge of emotion, without being overwhelmed by it that makes her so special - and distinct from some of the women with whom she is often compared. Celine Dion does not make me feel this way. Nor Mariah, nor Whitney. Perhaps Streisand a little. A singer from the theatre, which is no accident. It's surprising in a way that she hasn't done any musical theatre, because she is a great singing actor. Or acting singer. Wonderful, either way.

Somehow the TH-cam algorithm gods sent Lara to me just a few months ago! I have since watched dozens of, Lara Fabian "Reaction" vids. The many comparisons to Celine Dion continue to bother me. While Dion is a wonderful singer, no one comes close to Lara "The Ring" Fabian! Unfortunately, her manager was no match for Dion's "Team". Just as Lara was attempting to break into the American market in the late 90s, the door was essentially closed! This is why ~90 % of Americans have never heard of Lara Fabian! I can only imagine what could have been. Even though I am 25 years late to the party, I am thankful!

Kiitos Anna for a beautiful reaction to my favorite performance of Lara. I simply love how she makes her audience feel the emotions of the song like "pulling" them into it. As always I love to recommend Requiem pour un fou the duet with Johnny Hallyday where she shows her rock voice and still pulls you into the drama of the story told by the lyrics.

    Hi, Anna.
I always like your reactions. You pick things up so quickly and also seem to remember mostly at which point you notice one or the other. That makes it ever refreshing.
You basically said it all at the beginning that LARA is already into the song (the story) long before she even starts singing. That is the mark of a true artist. I agree totally on what you've said about where and when she uses her breathy tones, also and especially how easily she switches from those conversational lines to singing.
I love your reaction. I would have loved to have a vocal coach as engaging as you are, with very educational pointers, etc. ❤

Anna thank you once more for reacting and analysing Lara's masterpiece "Caruso". I find it so intetesting, thanks to you, to understand how Lara is able to produce subtle changes in her vocal delivery to enhance her performance. As a trumpet player I'm having a little difficulty with "vocal fry" as it just turns into flutter tonguing.😁

What I think?? Oh, girl. There's no better combination than Lara'a videos and Anna reactions. If I can suggest more of these: "Broken vow", "You're not from here" and "Love by grace" (all of them from same show), deserves your analysis. Besides I'm a instrumentist and not a vocalist, I love the way you can capture the details to show us the beauty of these incredible performances. Thanks for that!

The first time I ever heard this song it was performed by Luciano Pavarotti and I immediately fell in love with it, even though I didn't understand a single word of it ..... well ..... I knew a few words Italian but nowhere near enough to understand anything of the story.
I've heard Luciano Pavarotti sing much more impressive pieces often to utter perfection, but I somehow prefer his rendition of this old Bel Canto song above all his other works and that's really a high bar to pass.
Then I saw this rendition by Lara Fabian and fell in love all over.

I cannot sing to save my life, but whilst I appreciate only perfect music (as in my opinion) it's wonderful to listen to you explain the difficulty behind the mastery of her skill. Particularly when it is also partly done in Finnish.
And thank you for reacting to this. I suggested it a while ago, so very happy to see this reaction.
I speak Italian so her earthy (=Southern Italian) tone when speaking Italian is even more meaningful for me. I think you people in the know-how would call it placement and I know exactly what you mean by it, because whilst Finnish and Italian are very similar the 'placement' of the vovels and consonants are different even in everyday speech. Italian ones are always much wider and longer than the Finnish ones.

And in terms of Stamina I would be interested to see you reacting to her cover of Barbra’s Yentl where she chains “Papa can you hear me” and “Piece of sky” perfectly while running all over the stage in broadway mode th-cam.com/video/zW8lalHMwxk/w-d-xo.html
Or her legendary opera rock performance in a 80,000 stadium in duet with the french rocker Johnny th-cam.com/video/zR1rkt_0biA/w-d-xo.html
She has stamina like nobody else in fact.
In her pure concert in 1997, she chains many songs including yentl, I will always love you, vision of love and she finish with her hit Tout, a very energy-consuming song. And everything seems effortless to her 🤩
