    Thar for Amateur off roaders.
Gurkha for Hardcore Expert off roaders.
Anyone can drive a Thar off road
If you are trained on off road, take the Gurkha to extreme off road where Thar might fail.

You never get such car from any foreign manufacturers at this price!! These two are not direct alternate to one another but both are very capable cars and good in their own way!* ❤️❤️🇮🇳🇮🇳

I have owned two Thar CRDEs in the past. One was 2015 model and another was 2018 model. When new Thar Diesel came out I was so excited! It had more power than earlier Thar and definitely looked better and had become more creature friendly and feature rich. In my earlier Thars I used to zip and dash and go about with impunity thanks to great visibility due to thin A pillars. The steering was nimble and was decently powered. I sold my second Thar and ended up buying Gurkha! Let me tell you the reason:
    1. My off-roading time in my earlier Thar was very limited and mostly it was highway and in city drives.
    2. I did light to medium off roading and bad road touring. Very limited hardcore off roading.
    3. My family members were always challenged in sitting and comfort.
So when it came time to decide I factored:
    1. Availability of vehicle quickly (did not want to wait, Force Motors got me Karnataka's first black Gurkha in 7 days flat!!!)
    2. Seating for my family members i.e. old parents (Thar cannot provide that comfort)
    3. Will I always be driving at 120 or 125 on highways? Or, will I always use that much amount of power to race ahead of others? (No, I cannot be a stud or cheeta or whatever any longer)
    4. I can always lift and upgrade tyres to gain more ground clearance and off road abilities but I cannot fit a metal hard top or increase space.
    5. Force Motors treats me like a king! Mahindra won't. In my recent 3000 km drive whenever I had issues I talked directly at headquarters and was promptly guided by that state's regional managers.
    6. Khivraj Motor's Sales Manager Rajan has been in touch with me for last 4 years ever since I test drove Gurkha Extreme. I couldnt buy that beauty then because I had just bought Thar and did not have money. In all these years he has acted more like an acquaintance than someone trying to push sale on me.
    7. The driving comfort both on and off road is better in Gurkha. On broken highway I was sailing easily while Innova / Fortuners were slowing down or getting badly shaken up.
    8. I am ok to build my pace gradually on highways than pedal to metal. (I have used Dieseltronics as a backup for when needed on highways)
    9. Lets try something different and maybe manual diff locks will bring a new skill in me.
A lot of people over here are commenting about off road and abilities as if they are big time specialists. There are many other aspects also that need to be kept in mind. Many here will never do any off road or will do mild off road. In that condition Gurkha's plus points will start to matter.
As a Gurkha owner I biased my answer towards Gurkha.... similarly I could have done so for Thar as well. After all I have driven 1 lakh KMs or so on CRDE Thar with open flaps / aching shoulders / dusty interiors / angry parents and girl friends!!! Lol

Bro just one down point of Gurkha is it's underpowered Engine
Seriously it does no justice to Gurkha
I mean they have increased the engine size from 2.2 to 2.6 bt reduced the powerfrom 140 to 90 !!!!!
I mean at my hometown i do have one Gurkha of previous versions the engine was lit
They cud have given the same engine even Thar have 140 hp
Okay power apart even the Torque is reduced 😐

One thing to be understood is that Thar has auto diff locks, so in any obstacle, you get through, which is not the case in Gurkha, where you have to manually engage the diff locks giving more control to the driver. Hence it is not comparing apples to apples. I think more than the car, it's about the driver!!

    • @officialjishanali
      @officialjishanali 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

It's a Brake locking Differential (BLD) which is electronically controlled, it functions on its own will. Works pretty fine in most scenarios. In Gurkha the diffs are mechanical so one can engage and disengage them when he wishes to.

In wheel articulation the Thar is definitely better due to more suspension flex. But the Gurkha can overcome that by using any of the diff locks.
99% of usage will be on roads and uneven trails where the better suspension setup of the Gurkha will shine through. That said both are good Indian vehicles.

Here is an appreciation you deserve :- You are one of the very very few motor vloggers who actually gives practical and usable insights along with breathtaking landscapes. What I like best is how you give a crystal clear comparison of features as they are, what they do, and why is it so; without over critiquing or having a bias towards a brand or a vehicle. I appreciate your composure and to the point content. It is seen in the way you have shown the two vehicles for what they are and how they work differently in different situations. Hi Dinesh, it is after watching your videos on Thar, I stuck with my decision and bought a Thar Petrol ( did not wanted the headache of a DPF ). I have driven it 5500 kms in the past 2 months of ownership and loving every part of it. While in Solang valley, they have a parking for 4x4 vehicles and my Thar had no issues and got to use 4H and 4L both. The strange this is that a Fortuner 2021 4x4 got stuck and I was thinking that it would be easy to take on the obstacle but sometimes weight also plays a down part and then it has a long wheelbase too.
This is the best comparison you have done and I am sure there is more to come. There are spots where Thar is unbeatable and some spots where Gurkha holds it ground really well but all in all, both are very capable vehicles. It is not possible to get the best of both the worlds.

Manual Diff lock is very different concept and it involves less sensors compare to auto diff locks. It's like driving automatic car compare to manual transmission car. Car does everything for you. No offense on anyone's skills or technical skills. But you learn more about off roading in manual diff lock suvs. You have to take different approach when you do it in MDL suv. Because up to certain level your driving skills will come in help in tricky conditions. Those skill you will able to improve in MDL suv.

Its more to do with suspension travel in this video rather than capabilities of diff locks. Jeep Wrangler is a perfect combination of both. Very good suspension articulation and manual diff locks. When the suspension travel is good, you reduce the usage of diff locks a lot. But the good, bad road handling at high speed is what I think is the strength of Gurkha, which it will lose if it gets a suspension with higher travel and softer spring rate.

Bro articulation ko diff lock se shi kr skte ho. But bohot jagah that ki articulation bhi shi nhi kaam karegi waha manually locking diff better hogi na ?

Because in Thar its Automatic & and in Gurkha you have to do it manually 👍

      @lovenlama3333 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

N when u put manually then there is no stopping for gurkha aaur wahi pe that maar kha jata hai.

The reason why Gurkha pulls Thar in Tug of War because of the big engine low end power and torque and Manual Locking Differentials that help Gurkha. If Thar also had these raw off-road features then it would have been also great but i think now Gurkha is the only car which can pull Pajero in Tug Of War.

7:09 is that the body bidding coming off the body over DCV's head? That's the quality Force needs to improve!

How many times did you use that word- 'articulation'? 😍😍😍😍!!
But I think that is auto diff lock what actually works in favour of Thar at many places.

Selling India's own vehicles as Mahindera should be easy with the population of 1.3 billions. I have seen a few years back on the road in Malaysia. Impressive.

This is the biggest misconception among people who don't travel in these regions. Alto is common bcz its cheap, small and petrol. It gets stuck so easily even with local drivers.
