A little aside: I used to go outside of my apartment complex across the street from the VA hospital in lower Midtown Manhattan close to the FDR & East River. often I would see this guy playing the sax on the side of the street of 1st Ave where hardly anyone was walking by. I walked by a few times & was blown away by how good he played & wondering why he isn't playing in a club or other venue???? I was thinking surely he knows the other side where the shoppers were was more lucrative. So I would sit on the bench by the bus stop & just listen. I wanted to put a bit of cash in his open sax case, but he would get so perturbed by this so I knew to leave him be. I never saw anyone else come to listen or sit on the bus stop bench so it was like a private concert. I was astounded at his talent & powerful playing. One day I read that Sonny Rollins liked to play on one of the bridges, I think Williamsburg Bridge further downtown by the Lower East Side neighborhood, a Jewish enclave for a century or more. I heard he said he didn't want to make his neighbors uncomfortable from the noise practicing where he lived near the Grant St. area of the same neighborhood.. And it finally hit me - this must be Sonny Rollins!! He was in "the zone" so you couldn't disturb him to say, Wow thanks, so I say it here!! Thanks for those years jamming to the cars, etc. outside so this solitary soul who loves music could hear - but at the time my Jazz education was less proficient. If it had been more recent I would have recognized the music & saw clearly it was Mr.Rollins. With a computer & TH-cam I have learned so much about all kinds of music & players!!! iI has totally changed my life & I now know what all these musicians look like playing from my old CDs from these videos!
Seeing this honestly moves me to tears. A true cat who’s been playing since the early 50’s, with a lot of his friends and colleagues no longer with us, but at this time he was like 80-81, and still going strong. Long live Sonny!
I saw Rollins live with Al Foster on drums-90’s? This man filled the world with light and love! Don’t cry; smile! Check out his performance with Leonard Cohen.
He is 81 years old at this performance. His movements seem old, but the way he is playing saxophone is gorgeous. His spirit is young even infant.Long live Sonny.
I saw Sonny back around 08. Everyone talks about how he's still got it well into old age. Most of the show was like this but there was a good 5 minutes after his "intermission" when he cut as hard as I've ever heard into the 4th dimension. It was just a taste, but it was an authentic piece of original jazz age, once in a life time moments. It was like being at the recording session for Kind of Blue or Giant Steps... and then real life came back into existence again.
Pure Love between artist and public is what I see. Pure joy and respect. Big rewards for a life of integrity and good character. Makes me think how human beings can also be awesome and fantastic. God bless you for many years to come, Sonny!
Saw Sonny in concert 3 times got an album signed at an in store signing in the 90's and to see this Saxophone Colossus still kicking it at 86 then is amazing. A pity that America does not honor their own until death steps in. Europeans appreciate the music and artist more it seems.
The music of Sonny Rollins has been inspiring me for the last 30 years. It is always a pleasure to listen to these tunes, to think about the solos and to appreciate the unique style. I had the chance to see him 3 times on stage and it has always been such an experience ! Sonny is a giant !
A true Carribean man. Always stayed close to his calypso roots. I think his father was from ST.Thomas. Hence the song. This one is DON'T STOP THE CARNAVAL.
one phrase-for example, it is 23.37more worth than the full concert of , for example -wein shorter s whole concert ... even though the mr shorter is a great player! sonny is pure jazz!!!!!!!!!!! best jazz tenor saxplayer
once you are for example 50 meters away from the artist, sound has to travel as much as 0,15s (sound travels 340m/s, im not sure if the calc. is correct tho) to get to them and then that much once more in order to get back to the stage mics that pick it up... it's not a neglible amount of time

Saxophone Colossus, who taught me how wonderful JAZZ is, is one of the best in my life! Thank you Sonny Rollins!

I have seen him once. Also about 2011. In Holland. The man has so much energy. unbelievable.
His light still beams so true & will always warm all who hear... a beacon free from fear... a gift of truth, peace & hope.

Once a man; twice a child.
The great Sonny completes 360 degrees in calypso style.
Sonny lives!
What can you say? A legend, and for good reason. Outstanding!
standing ovations by the audience that's allright with me
What else can you say except---this man IS American music
Saw him live in London ages ago ... at the Barbican Concert Hall ... Needless to say, was entanced !
he sounds good here...his phrasing and all the ideas.
Absolutely some of the best concerts I've attended, ever, were Newk's. And on top of it all, egoless.....a sweet earthy humanistic person.

What's the name of the first music that him played in this concert?
its 2 and 4 damnit
Wahou !
crowd clapping off beat as usual

you're right... we are not used to think to sound as to a physical thing, but it is it!
Non. Lowell Wolfe a raison.
But calypso isn't felt on 2 and 4...
@@gcharocks nah man not even to do with that, it just doesn't land on any beat - 1, 2, 3, 4 or the 'and's in between
