'The thing about Sonny is that when he didn't like what was happening on stage, he would say so but not specifically. Well, not always. Before Sonny, I had played with more free musicians, like Oliver Lake and Michael Gregory Jackson. I listened to Dave Holland, Anthony Braxton, I loved this interaction with the leaders. You could hear it in my playing. Sonny didn't want that. Sometimes, if I was a little too present, he would signal me to return to my place as bassist in the rhythm section. Generally speaking, it wasn't that accurate. It was up to you to figure out what was wrong and find a solution. This is why many musicians called him old school. Sometimes it was very frustrating when me and the other members of the group didn't understand what he wanted. For example, during a tour in Japan. The group consisted of Sammy Figueroa on congas, Mark Soskin on piano, Clifton Anderson on trombone, Al Foster on drums. We were playing “The Cutting Edge.” Sonny does his solo and sometimes he misses an eighth note. Me, I wonder if I go with Sonny or if I stay with Al. Does the rhythm adapt to Sonny or will Sonny adapt to us? The situation became very uncomfortable on several occasions. Once we were on a plane, Sonny came back from business class to see me and handed me a paper. He had written: “Just play the ostinato.” OK! Despite this, the problem was not resolved. I asked Al if it was me. He told me it was Sonny. In fact, when you play, you are listening to both your inner self and the band. Sometimes you may have an absence. I ended up dreading playing this piece. As he left the stage, Sonny was furious. Sammy once tried to very diplomatically say that the problem was with him, but not explicitly. This was the last tour Sammy did with Sonny for many years. He never said why. He later fired Mark and me. We learned that he was playing a concert at the Bottom Line in New York with another bassist and another pianist. We were out of the band for three and a half years, from 1981 to 1983. And then, in the summer of 1984, he called us back and asked us to come back. Did this have to do with what happened with “The Cutting Edge”? Let's face it, no-one blows hip tenor like Sonny and no-one would after 'trane left the straight path... Personally, as one who used at least one of Sonny's arrangements in every tiny straight-ahead date I had (personally I overused his calypso-style 'i'm old fashioned' with the ocean cruise feel) I can assert that Mr Rollins is and was the greatest interpreter of a melody in the Jazz idiom and I owe him big time. From his first lines over that super first chorus which set up the major arps and altered tones he will use , to the total un-use of the rest of the band as soloists, he struts his stuff. When we hear Sonny play that solo on "Here's to the People" we are witnessing the pinnacle of 100,000 years of Homo Sapiens evolution. Sure, our species has done lots such as traveled to outer space, built grand edifices, etc. And we've had Mozart, Bird, Beethoven, Ellington - all fabulous assets to our time on Earth. But our species has not achieved anything *better or more important* than what Sonny does here. Amazing!
The song "Here's to the People" is 32 bars with 4 additional bars for the drums. Sonny took 15 chorus's of his solo 32 X 15 and then ended the song .that's 480 bars!!!!
I saw Rollins at Massey Hall with Al Foster on drums. He delivered a year’s worth of Jazz in a couple of hours. I prefer Rollins to Trane-generally speaking. Rollins is as sweet as Tupelo Honey. He doesn’t need to warm up because he’s always got sunlight in his belly.
Don't feel bad...I've realized that a lot of production and camera people haven't got a clue as to what the listener/viewer is interested in. I love watching a musician who's standing still and not playing while the bassist, guitarist or horn player is killing a solo we can hear but not see..."They (production people) don't know, and they don't know that they don't know, and they don't care..."
I just listened to a 10h European podcast radio show on Sonny Rollins (yes, 10x 1h, covering 1951-2001 !!!). My opinion of Rollins is that it seems very overrated to me. First of all as a player, he does not seem to me better than Johnny Griffin, Stitt, Roland Kirk, Phil Woods, Lateef ... but enjoys a much more important reputation ... and unjustified in my opinion. Ok he plays well, but not better than the musicians I mentioned. In terms of composition, he did not compose anything, everyone knows that St Thomas is a Caribbean folklore already recorded by Randy Weston in 1955 under the title Fire Down There. His other compositions from the 50s ... well, Oleo, Airegin etc ... this can in no way be compared to the compositions of Trane, Bird, Monk or Shorter ... also, his playing and his sound are terribly degraded after 1966 (36 years). It seems that he was traumatized by the arrival of Ornette, Trane, Ayler ... In the 60's he tried to be more free than Ayler, more calypso / blues than Ornette, and more mystical than Trane, but he didn't. did not succeed. Then in the 70s / 80s he tried to be funky, disco ... with really ridiculous and cheesy results ... Did he want to be funkier than James Brown himself? Also, in the radio show they say that he was paid current $ 300,000 for himself to record the Nucleus album (so listen to the result !!!!), and that, for his concerts, his financial claims were unrealistic, only the big festivals could afford it. He played with the Stones but didn't want to go on tour with them because, according to Jagger himself, he wanted too much money! I mean, I'm not making anything up here. In my opinion, he should have remained what he was before, a disciple of Bird at the Tenor, and quit at the age of 40 to leave a quality job, and without trying to follow fashion. Thank you for not insulting me because I have documented myself on Rollins and I like to have constructive discussions without being attacked on my person.
