As of this writing, Sonny is still living amongst us at 93 years old. No longer playing due to pulmonary fibrosis in the lung, but still living and granting interviews here and there. One of the greatest jazz musicians to ever walk the earth.
Lol the intro is so funny. For those who don't know swedish, he says something like "his music can be described as hardcore, stressful, angry and ruthless" 😂
@@benoitz5976 To be brief, no I don't know why Sonny would be moving his right hand one step down while he's playing. But I can see him moving his right hand down to press the lower right hand side key, with the side of his right hand, such as at 9:25, at 11:15 he appears to be resting his right hand.
He musta kept a King in stash, though this one's ca +/- 56 or later. He was playing a King to start with, but I believe you see him in the trio NY 57 playing a Selmer.
@@benoitz5976 The right hand thumbhook on the Super 20 is too small, making it uncomfortable on the right wrist to play for long periods. Martins have this same problem. I agree the Super 20 sounds great and that is probably why Sonny was dealing with the discomfort to play it. But the Mark VI is much more comfortable.
saw sonny live 2 times. one in damrosh park in lincoln ctr and the other in carnegie hall. the best live shows that i ever saw. sonny will always live thru his music.
Sonny Rollins--the towering Colossus of Jazz-- took some breaks from performing to perfect his craft (in his own eyes and ears), and watching this video from 1959, it strikes me that bassist Henry Grimes dropped out of the jazz world for over 30 years, resurfacing in 2002 to go on making more amazing music. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Grimes
Amazing trio! Sonny w/ Henry Grimes - bass, Joe Harris - drums It Don't Mean A Thing if it Ain't Got That Swing Paul's Pal 8:02 Love Letters 14:56 Bill Evans trio '64 My Foolish Heart 20:58
I'm not particularly a fan of this style of jazz and am not a fan of the saxophone generally - EXCEPT in the hands of Sonny Rollins. When I want my mind blown, I whip on the soundtrack for Alfie. Incredible and also - the recording technique, while the least significant thing, is also mind blowing. BTW What's with EJ's tiny bass drum? Great set, Nalen '59.
en rättelse jag skulle tro att det är Elvin Jones trumset, han spelade med John Coltrane under åren 1961-62 och var i Stockholm 62 i en bejublad konnser med John Coltrane!

ha ha ha ha ha just crushing it.
Commanding, passionate and brilliantly executed. The great Sonny Rollins.
Its great to have this document of him stretching out live.
This aging ( 75 yrs old ) drummer thanks you for posting this recording!🎼🥁
The King s20 Silver Sonic with a DR Link was one of Sonny's best sounding setups, this is a terrific clip.
Do you know why he's moving his right hand one step down sometimes when he's playing ?????????

At 19:31 he quotes Scheherazade, my mind is blown how far into the future Sonny has always lived

Henry Grimes!
The sax and drum trades at the end of ‘Don’t mean a Thing’ are ridiculously out of this world
An absolute gem of a video and Sonny is an absolute genius of improvisation.
Total,Totally,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
This is awesome
Happy birthday sonny........94 !
Grande Sonny Rollins. Simplesmente impressionante!!

Kjell Hägglund - Very many thanks!
Amazing, been looking for this recording for years. Thank you very much.

Sonny once states that Charlie Parker IS the God of the saxophone 🎷
What a compliment from an Organic Jazz genius!
Such a humble giant of jazz. Long live Sonny Rollins!
in fact he was absolutely no humble in 1959, and after also!
What an humble man
???
Wow, thanks for posting this Kjell!
Härligt! ( = Wonderful! )
Sonny Rollins had a big influence on Bernt Rosengren who sadly left us recently.
Great recording! Thanks for the Upload Kjell :-) Unfortunately without audience.
Wow. This is brilliant footage.
Amazing trio!

Ah!
