    This story hits so close to home. I can't describe in words how bad of a headache hyponatremia can cause. Years ago, I was hospitalized for a kidney infection and as protocol, I was receiving extra IV fluids plus antibiotics. When my mom asked the intern about me being on a medication called DDAVP (which slows down urination because I was waking up a lot at night prior to being admitted) and pushing and stopping fluids at the same time, the intern told her it was totally fine. My kidney infection improved and I was getting ready to be discharged, and was asking for some ibuprofen due to a headache. My mom asked the nurse to see if we could get my labs drawn again because my pinky finger wouldn't stop twitching, and the intern and attending came running in saying they had to repeat the blood work because if my sodium was that low I wouldn't physically be able to sit up & talk to them. I was med flighted and spent three horrific weeks in the ICU, as other electrolytes dropped as well, and you have to be so careful not to raise them up too fast to not cause seizures.

      Me too, only I got bacteremia, then sepsis and had pyelonephritis and hydronephrosis with mine. I didn't even feel sick!
      I had eaten a big piece of watermelon and it caused me to pass my obstructive kidney stone in to my ureter. I was admitted after CT showed the 1.2 cm kidney stone was stuck in my ureter. Within three hours of being admitted, my bp started to drop. It was at 88/54 and my heartrate went up to 130. Then my kidney started to shut down. I had to get a uretal stent because my kidney wasn't draining.
      The Dr wanted me to take a metoprolol to slow my heartrate down but I refused it because my bp was already low and dropping. He gave me a bolus iv instead that brought it up to 98. My bp drops below 100 sometimes but the gemtesa they put me on elevates it. That can also add the hydronephrosis.
      The Dr's wouldn't give me any potassium or magnesium for the week I was in the hospital because my kidney wasn't functioning properly I presume. My electrolytes were so out of whack it was almost three months before I could have the lithotripsy! I had heart arrhythmias and low oxygen and had to go back to the ER... my magnesium was critical and I had to be given an iv of it.
      My oxygen, bp and heartrate was really screwed up for a while after that.
      I had sepsis twice, before and after the lithotripsy and I had two different types of bacteria in my urine. I kept running a fever, less than 102.3 for over two months so they kept doing cultures on me. I had a bad headache too. I took pain meds for it.
      The uretal stent got infected too but they refused to remove it because my kidney wasn't draining urine. Plus it would stir up the bacteria and cause more problems.
      I ended up with two different types of bacteria in my urine. I kept running a fever for over two months so they kept doing cultures and changing antibiotics to avoid antibiotic resistance bacteria.
      The uretal stent got infected too but they refused to remove it. I was in a lot of pain from the stent, too.
      I hope and pray that I never get another super infection like that again!
      I'm so happy you made it through your illness okay. I know you're thankful your mother noticed everything before you left, too. So sorry for all you went through. I can sympathize, for sure. I'm just happy I'm still here! I guess the good Lord wasn't ready for me yet! 😇

    Can you increase the level of sodium in your body by consuming salt?Bcs as I know salt is sodium chloride,but I dont know if you need pure sodium..btw amazing vid

    • @ArtFreak17
      @ArtFreak17 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pure sodium, as in elemental sodium, would be far too violently reactive to ingest or inject.
      Just like the rest of the metals in the alkali and alkali earth metals groups on the periodic table - they REALLY want to get rid of 1 or 2 electrons [respectively] to anything that will take them. They can be so reactive that they can burst into flame upon contact with water or air.
      (But they can become extremely stable when they do bond with something else and form salts - which can usually be a halogen like chlorine. This can allow the sodium to more easily dissociate in water and be useful/available to biological systems/reactions.)

      Yeah, you do realise you have sodium in your body. That is if you don’t be an idiot and drink too much water. I’ve seen that Chubbyemu video too, and what we can deduct from the video is that water dissolves the sodium and that sodium is gone even before you piss. We also learn about the water causing herniation to the brain.

      See Chubbyemu's corresponding video on the topic. There is two more factors to consider when do that.
      1) People with low level of sodium because drinking too much water can also have low level of potassium, and you should correct the level of potassium before trying to correct sodium level.
      2) You don't want to raise the level too fast, or you'll cause Central Pontine Myelinolysis

      Chnet Gamer Chubbyemu’s video tells a story based on the death of Jennifer Strange, but his story has a happy ending where she lives. Instead of calling her Jennifer or Mrs Strange, he refers to her as KC. The reason KC survives is because they give her sodium infused water on a drip and it draws the 3 gallons of water (which is how much KC drank) out of her organs and into her bladder. She wets herself and regains consciousness. Chubbyemu also explains that the reason she wasn’t able to pee after drinking all that water was her body released a substance called vasopressin, which is an anti diuretic hormone. A diuretic makes you pee, whereas an anti diuretic stops you from peeing. The reason for her body doing this is because if you’re nauseous, your body cleverly anticipates vomiting and retains the fluid therein. Of course KC wasn’t unwell, so for her, this wasn’t necessary, and she retained the water that was inside her body before the contest and the water she drank during it. What happened to her is called SIADH (Syndrome of Inappropriate Anti Diuretic Hormone).

    For one of your videos could you talk about the HIPAA and what it means for you as someone in the medical field as well as your patients? Im taking a Bio-Med class that’s why I’m interested in it.

    • @anastasiatsurkan961
      @anastasiatsurkan961 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Zack1227 _ HIPAA basically means protecting patient’s information. I work as a medical assistant. I can talk about cases without mentioning pt’s information (name, dob, address and so on). I can’t tell my husband about the funny name haha. It also means when I call pt with test results I can’t leave a voice message if I don’t have written consent from pt. I can’t leave any information with family member again unless I have a consent. If I feel this is emergency, I can give minimal needed information to pt’s emergency contact.
      If a doctor in my office is having a surgery himself I can’t call and cancel his patients saying he is in surgery. That would be HIPAA because he is a patient. When I’m having a surgery at the same hospital where I’m working I myself have to inform occupational health, but my doctor can’t do it, same like occupational health can’t go in my chart.
      When you as a patient want your medical records to go to another doctor you can’t just call and request it to be faxed. You have to sign consent and that other doctor’s office have to request it.
      HIPAA is a very tricky thing! Would love to see a video too

    Absolutely phenomenal channel. Seriously good content and really great editing. I have two questions: 1) How are you so upbeat? It’s like you’re permanently happy, no matter how tired you are or the challenges you’re facing. Whatever it is, if you could bottle it you’d be a billionaire, 2) what do you do with your free time. I mean, playing violin, 2nd year resident doing 24 hour shifts, producing a professionally edited you tube channel with a huge subscriber base, that would hardly fill an average person’s day. Do you also compete in ultramarathons? Have a commercial pilots license? Climb Everest without oxygen? Study 12th century Portuguese poetry?

    Q: How would the 0.9% NaCl solution (or isotonic drink) compare to water on the lethal dose? Way back from school I remember hypo/hypertonic solutions and their affect on the body, but somehow we didn't talk about too much isotonic solution and its effect in big quantities. I'd imagine a person couldn't have too much of that either, but I'm not quite sure how would it compare to water for example??

    I've heard that once you feel thirsty you are already dehydrated. Is this true?

    • @ViolinMD
      @ViolinMD  5 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Nope not necessarily! Everybody's body is different and it depends when your "thirst" threshold is set. Part of your body's way of regulating water intake is the feeling of thirst. If you feel a little thirsty and then drink, you should be staying hydrated. Your kidneys are very good at regulating your body for the most part, so they will just start to retain more water! Hope that makes sense!

    My kidneys failed a few days before I went on vacation for a week. I didn’t know it at the time. I went on vacation anyway because I had spent several thousand dollars renting a house on a place called the Outer Banks in North Carolina. I had no appetite the entire week, was weak and was drinking gallons of water each day because I was extremely thirsty. Peed gallons a day as well. Went to my doctor when I got home and discovered I had no kidney function.They saved one of my kidneys by putting a stent in my ureter. Turned out I had retroperitoneal fibrosis. 10 years later my one kidney is still functioning because I take prednisone every day to keep the fibrotic tissue at bay. Of course it caused two aortic aneurysms and one of them ruptured. Had emergency Surgery on it. That’s my water story and I’m sticking to it.

The doctor at the ER almost killed my mom because she was diabetic and thought it was just her high sugars that was making her dizzy and lightheaded but it was because she was suffering from blood loss due to her period. If he had listened than she would have gotten the proper care but he was dismissive and acted like he already knew the problem. I think it’s common for that to happen to people of colour, too.

    I love your vlogs, though this one hit a sore spot. . I saw the title and for some reason still clicked the link...
    My Mum died of IV fluid induced hyponatremia after being given fluid at our local hospital (In NZ) in 2006. They sent her home and she died the next day. Unfortunately they would not admit it happened in the ER, they tried to blame my mum, saying she drank too much water herself, even after we told them she had been throwing up so much she could not keep any water down (the reason she went to the ER).
    Autopsy showed we were correct and even after a meeting with the top people at the hospital, no one would take responsibility. My younger siblings were toddlers/small, and I was a teenager, it was the worst day of my life the day she died. IV fluid induced hyponatremia is a thing and it has made me very weary of letting anyone give me an IV, though so far, I have been okay.
    Thank you for your vlogs and expertise, thank you for teaching all your viewers about the aspects of your job and for the amazing job you do.

    I will do what I call a water flush to help clean out my system at least every 6 months. I've been doing it for ten years and always feel full of energy and it feels like I function a lot better. It does involve drinking a lot of water but not all at once...I pace it through half of the day making sure to add electrolytes as I do. 1 gallon per every hour and a half. Rest for two hours, drink one more gallon for an hour, rest for an hour and then....a good salad with fish or chicken and I feel like a million dollars! before I started, I always felt tired and no energy at all. It's the difference of night and day. It's not for everyone though, some people may have underlying health issues. But for me I have never had any issues. I had my blood checked for any sodium issues to make sure I was adding the right dose of electrolytes and my levels were normal....It also lowered my blood pressure....if doing this had anything to do with it.
