    Whenever a doctor answers my page and sounds like I woke them up, I go out of my way to have a cup of coffee waiting for them. They don't always drink it, but it makes them smile most of the time.

      I have a super rare disease that only 10 people for every million have. I'm having my 8th brain surgery in 9 years coming up soon. It is understandable to be afraid, but don't be! Yes, some doctors, nurses, etc. just plain suck. They do. Same as any other profession, some people are in their line of work for the wrong reasons and it shows. However, MOST people in healthcare truly do want the best for you! Keep in mind that they are human and will have bad days. In the U.S. at least, nurses are way overworked and some doctors are too. That can create so much stress that they seem less than friendly when in reality, they care and are upset that they can't do their very best for every patient because they simply have too little time & not enough help. All of that said, in order to go through what they go through, including ungrateful & demanding patients, most of them really do care. I've been hospitalized dozens of times and have had hundreds of nurses & doctors in that time, so I've had a pretty good "survey" to base this on! Even with my disease being so rare & thus difficult to treat, most of those caring for me have tried their best to meet my needs. If you need healthcare then get it, don't put it off out of fear!

    • @petercdowney
      @petercdowney 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I should probably let you know that Siobhan appears to have a tendency to put the stethoscope over the shirt. That's definitely something. As far as I'm aware, the best doctors always ensure it touches the skin!

    • @michellebaker6302
      @michellebaker6302 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@petercdowney 1) What does that have to do with the comment you're replying to? 2) I absolutely disagree. Sometimes they can't get a good listen through clothing but if they can, why risk spreading germs from patient to patient? I HATE when doctors put their stethoscope on my skin. They only do it if they have to because they know this. The doctors I've spoken with try to avoid it for exactly the reason I just said - the last thing you want is to listen to the heart & lungs of a sick patient and then put it on the body of a healthy one.

    I was wondering if it might be an interesting video to do a “what I wish I could tell patients” or “what I wish patients would do” vid. Like keep your medications in order, eat more vegetables, don’t delay routine visits or procedures, or whatever you see a lot of that could maybe help people stay out of the hospital or at least have a better outcome.

      Oh my gosh this would be great!!!! Know what medical conditions you have, know what meds you take and what they're actually for (just those two would be huge). If I could throw in eat more vegetables and go for at least a short walk every day and stop smoking that's starting to seem like too much to ask haha but it would be so nice

      thats why only the best students are chosen to be doctors, if you start of smart, the job is slightly easier for you. On oncall days on the other hand you need a alot endurance as you most probably wont be able to sleep the whole night and expected to perform at a good level the next day. in some centers you have to work 8am till 5pm the next day.

So if I page a doctor overheard with no response, I'll call his/her answering services. We had a patient come into the ER who had fallen into the Ohio river in January. Witnesses said he was underwater for 20 minutes. Patient had no vitals when EMS found them. By time the patient got to ED he had been without a pulse or respirations for about 36 minutes. Because his body temperature was kept so low due to the ice cold water, our amazing physicians managed to resuscitate him... Two days later he started breathing on his own again and woke up. He had almost no lasting damage even though he was clinically dead for more than 30 minutes.

    QUESTION: How can a grateful patient best express said gratitude? Obviously a verbal "thank you" at the time, but what is best? I'm heading into brain surgery #8 (pseudotumor cerebri/idiopathic intracranial hypertension - I'm 1 in 100,000) so lots of hospital stays! I ALWAYS bring a hand-written card to give to the people who cared for me when I go back to the hospital for my post-ops, and I usually try to slide a Starbuck's card in because there is one in the hospital and most of them say they run on caffeine. Anything that stands out that you always appreciate?

      Michelle Baker written cards and notes are definitely the way to go! Chocolates and coffees are great, but a heartfelt note is just so much more special.

    I know this comment may sound stupid but I know how annoying it is to be woken up by loud noice (Fire alarm) so my boarding school is quite an old one and as a result it used to go off at 12 am 2 am 4 am and 7 am on really bad nights.

    I definitely understood when you questioned why you’re working so hard and your friends are having fun. I’ve felt this way since I started college. But, my mind is in the right place and I know where I want to be and that’s in the hospital helping others and traveling one day. You’re great to look up to ❤️

    The fear of sleeping through something critical was honestly what kept me from going for an MD or DO degree when I was younger. I deal with a lot of fatigue. Hopefully with medication, I can make it through if I decide to go to med school in a few years once the kids are grown up and if I get admitted. It would be my dream to be an OB / GYN, but obviously that is not the friendliest profession for someone who does not tolerate sleep deprivation well.

    I really wish I could meet you. YOU are what we need here in the US especially where I live. How do you deal with someone with chronic issues that even their regular doctor cant deal with? I am disabled and have chronic issues that when I end up in the ER now, I get labeled as a drug addict, of which i am NOT...how would you give quality care to a person in my situation?

    Coincidentally, the bell sound heard at 0:52 can be heard in hospitals as the fire alarm system’s alarm signal, since hospitals don’t usually like loud buzzing/shrieking alarms that are heard in most other buildings.

    What happens if they sleep through their pager for an emergency page? Whoever’s charge goes to the on call room and wakes them up 😂 we’re blessed in the ICU that the on call room is across the hall.
    For the record though we’d only do it for an emergency, you guys need you’re sleep!!

    Not 1-1 comparable but I’m a Red Cross first aid volunteer. A few times a year I have sleep shifts during events. Meaning that so am at the first aid station with my colleague. We will be in bed sleeping and will be called by security if someone needs help, or they shuts show up at the first aid station. When someone calls the Dutch emergency number (112) the dispatch center will call us to.
    I’m a deep sleeper and the first few times I was so scared to miss a call from security or the 112 center during an emergency. But I have found out that even though I am a deep sleeper at home, during these sleep shifts I wake up at the smallest sounds. At home a bomb could explode right next to me and I wouldn’t even hear it, during these shifts someone could cough outside and I would be sitting straight up in bed.
