    My sister,a diabetic, thought drinking a lot of water would help her kidneys, however, too much water caused her to flush out just about all of her sodium. She almost died from electrolyte imbalance before she even knew what was wrong with her. Thank God she found out before it was too late.

      @@Globetrotter-1 Would probably be good to dilute orange/other juices with added water. Dehydration is also bad. In fact, if your coffee is caffeinated, beware.

    This video is needed! I was severely dehydrated after having my baby and no amount of water was helping. I was actually flushing out important electrolytes! After I started drinking Pedialyte and Coconut waters I was like new. I think they saved my life.

      I’m currently pregnant and no matter how much water I drink I seem to always feel dehydrated😢! I notice some difference when I drink coconut water or lemon water but regular h20 doesn’t always do it for me. This video and comment is very helpful. Thx

    What the good doctor said is *SOOOO* true. I was in basic training in the US Army in June 1999 in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. There was a recruit in another class that died due to over hydration. A lot of soldiers got sick due to all the water, but the drill sergeants kept making people drink water because of all the physical activity going. That caused the Army to do studies on the proper amount of water soldiers should be drinking.

    I can chime in on this. Im a delivery driver. And during the hot Florida summer. I once drank so much water that i slowly became sick throughout the day. And I thought i was dehydrated. Ended up getting heat exhaustion and had to take several days off work.
    So what happened ? I didn't replenish my electrolytes. So i was diluting it throughout the day. I actually didnt known that i needed to replenish electrolytes since amazon never trained us about it! (Last year! This year they finally listened and educate new drivers). Ever since that day i use electrolyte packs halfway into my route. Ive been fine ever since.

    Good advice, I was actually just researching this topic during the summer. I had worked out in the hot sun again and had been chugging water and ended up feeling horrible. At some point I stumbled upon information about hyponutremia and realized that is what has been happening to me. If you're doing intense physical work in the sun in summertime and drinking water to try and stay hydrated, hyponutremia is almost guaranteed to happen. I was talking with my dad about it and he said grandpa used to bring salt pills when they'd go hiking, that was back in the 60's. I guess the old timers really did know what they were doing.

    I will always find your content Dr. Berg. The water thing - no one tells us! Dr. Berg is telling us. I never knew about drinking too much water. I had a friend going into hospital for surgery, very frightened about it. The night before she had to drink the stuff to clear her bowels. I went to visit her, and to help her, I said I'd take a shot of water for every drink she had to take to finish the jug. I drank almost a gallon in a very short time. It didn't feel great, but we had fun taking "shots" together, and it helped her. I believed it was a harmless way to care for a friend. When I left the hospital shortly thereafter, I went to fill the gas tank up and almost passed out at the pumps. I couldn't drive for about 15 minutes, dizzy and presyncopal. I learned AFTERWARD, looking it up, that I could have killed myself this way! I'd always heard about drinking more water, more water. No one ever told me about drinking too much being dangerous. Thanks again Doc! Keep up the good work.👌👍👏👏👏

    In middle eastern medicine traditions, it is recommend to drink water in a sitting position, because the water passes through you easier drinking standing.
    As a trekker I was recommended to take sips of water every once in a while, that way one did not even have to use the restroom on a trail, because the water was used by body, or sweating out

      @@BrickMudge I went on a high fat carnivore diet, but getting off gluten was the cure. Even if you are not celiac you may be gluten sensitive. Anyone with an autoimmune disease should first get off gluten.

    I think sometimes people also are confused by being told to drink more water when what is meant is drink more water INSTEAD of soda or coffee, or other unhealthy drinks. They think if they drink more water it will somehow cancle out the bad stuff they drink and make up for their caffeine consumption. The other thing is all the hype on alkalized water. That really drives me crazy because it is the opposite of what they meed most times. The end up neutralizing their stomach acid and making themselves more acidic. If it goes in one Ph, it comes out the other.

    Empty water is dehydrating. We know water is dehydrating because when you spend a lot of time in the bath, you go all wrinkly as if all the moisture from your skin has been lost. People should drink according to thirst which changes depending on metabolic rate, ambient temperature, activity level, sodium intake, protein intake etc. If water makes you go cold and causes you to urinate frequently, then cutting back is smart.

    In times of old they used to call the study of the body's minerals "alchemy" but it's not occult practice to monitor your minerals via hair mineral analysis for instance. This way you can administer minerals via specific foods and address the imbalance thus regaining health and well-being. Which leads to Dr Berg. This gentleman is well practiced in restoring minerals in the body. I tell anyone who will listen, "Dr Berg" cleared up my heart palpitations so quick. He's the genuine article.     One of the best ways to get hydrated is through eating high water content plants. The water in plants is EZ (exclusion zone) water which is a gel. If you drink plain water your body has to convert it to EZ water for the cells to take it in and utilize it. Desert peoples know which desert plants have abundant water and use these to stay hydrated.

    When I was young and participated in intensive sports , we were told to drink not earlier than 2 hrs after, not during activities. These days people are walking for 30-60 min with a bottle of water in hand.

      I never go anywhere without my 40oz ceramic lined water jug. I even carry a backup in my truck. I guess I'm a health nut or something, but I don't trust any water from anywhere in any form nowadays. In fact, I make my own "holy water" using the "Fukushima method." Then I add 3 tbsps of organic lemon juice, 1 tspn of organic baking soda as a buffer and 1 tspn of sea salt. To me, it's like drinking kool aid or something. The baking soda kinda gives it a carbonated affect too.

      Please don't listen to everyone on this blog because certain advisements could potentially hurt or cause injury to you.
      You said you are already drinking a gallon a day and someone is here advising you that a gallon a day is not enough water intake.
      I don't believe that advice is a good one.

      @@peterpatton2867 Correct, a gallon of water a day is never too little. The electrolytes need to be added in. I stated above, a few times a week I add a teaspoon of sodium, potassium and magnesium each to a cup of water, drink that, then chase it down with something more pleasant - but that's just me, all at once then not worry about it.

      @@ProRighteousantiDevilish-wk7ur You do make a point, if people are eating mostly processed, high sodium foods, they are in a very different place than people like me, who mostly only buy organic ingredients and so I know precisely how little sodium I am taking in, thus I supplement, with sea salt and some sodium/potassium/magnesium electrolyte water. The core idea is to balance the salts, not that someone has too much or too little sodium. More or less sodium is ok, so long as it is balanced with a good amount of potassium and magnesium salts in the body. Potassium and sodium work in opposition, one brings water into the cells, one lets the water out. Magnesium, an argument can be made that we ALL get too little of it as the soils food grows in are depleted these days. Calcium, too, is vital - but I get enough of it from organic heavy cream and sour cream and occasional yogurt/kefir.

    For the last 1-1/2 years, on your healthy keto, I've been drinking on average between 8 and 12 bottles of (16 oz) spring water with a scoop of your electrolyte powder in each bottle and it makes me feel good, of course I work very hard out doors/physical activities, so I need it. Also, I have only been eating OMAD for the last 6 months without snacking throughout the day. It took a lot of self-discipline to get where I'm now. Thank you, Dr. Berg, for your knowledge and wisdom!!!

    Combat medic here. While in Afghanistan, we kept having soldiers drop like flies, with all the signs and symptoms of water toxicity. Turns out, command had been pushing the directive to drink water basically all day. The docs and medics finally had to go to command and tell them to change that, and to add electrolyte powders to the mix. They didn't know any better. "Drink water" has always been the mantra. A little knowledge goes a long way. Thanks for the video.

    My late father worked outdoors and took salt tablets to balance the sweat he was losing.
    I always drink plenty of water but I also consume salt with food.
    Another type of drug that can cause low sodium consists of medication to lower blood pressure.
    The biggest sign you need salt is muscle cramping.
    Without salt, your cells cannot absorb water.

      I have a different experience. When i drink during my meal, i find that the water is absorbed rather than just passing through, it helps with my regular bowel movement. If i drink on empty stomach, i had to pee right after and it just feel pointless too me. If you have enough stomach acid i dont think drinking water during meal will affects that much. That being said, i do take my water with acv often.

    I get constipated even with enough fiber and psyllium husk so I've always had to drink a lot of water or I can't go regularly. About three liters a day will keep me going smooth. My girl friend and others I know have little issue with drinking very little water throughout the day. It is worth mentioning that one should already be hydrated before eating a meal so that you don't drink while you eat as separating your hydration and food consumption will make it easier on your body to do what it does.

    TO get adequate electrolytes, about once or twice a week I have begun drinking a small cup of water with 1 tsp each of sodium, potassium, magnesium powder, then chasing it down with regular water, usually flavored with lemon or lime and or a fruit tea bag. It is actually not as bad as you would think, tastes a bit sweet even. But that way, I worry less about how much potassium and sodium I am salting my food with. I also supplement with magnesium pills, since we get relatively little from food these days, as the soil is depleted.

    Can you talk more about how hypothyroidism contributes to dehydration? I'm hypothyroid and have struggled with hydration levels for DECADES. I would LOVE to understand this correlation better.

    I also started to put a pinch of pink salt to the first bottle of water (or glass) I have each morning. Made a huge difference. I wasn’t peeing every 20 minutes which I found very annoying and prevented me from drinking water sometimes when for example, if I had an hour meeting or longer. Now I understand why it worked better with this video

    I heard somewhere that your body can only process 8 oz of water / hour. When I first started drinking more water my mouth felt parched, like my body was screaming for more water. I started just holding the water in my mouth for a while to not excessively drink it but help with the feeling of excessive thirst.

    I’ve been drinking 100 ounces of water throughout the day for decades. Never had a problem. But also not in one sitting. And I exercise regularly. Although I’ve always had high blood pressure so I have to watch sodium intake. Last blood test the only thing that was a bit off and slightly out of range was one entry. I asked the doctor what that was. He said, “Oh that just means you’re very well hydrated. But nothing to worry about.” This is still good to know though and just be mindful of the water intake.

    Back in my younger days, I was an aircraft mechanic who worked in an non-airconditioned hangar in Miami, FL. Miami is hot, metal buildings are even hotter than that, and metal airplanes inside of metal buildings are really up there on the hotness scale. We had salt table dispensers on the wall and could take them whenever we felt like we needed them. Nothing drives home the amount of salt you're sweating out like seeing dark shirts with white salt rings on them, on 50, or so, of your co-workers.

    How true. Back in the 60s l picked grapes in the lmperial and Coachella Valley ( S. Calif.) in the summer, from 6 am to sometimes 9 pm. Temperatures were over 110 almost every day. My mom would put plenty of salt in our lunch and our field foreman would hand out a small box of salt tablets to everyone. The reason being cause we were drinking tons of water, as we all carried aluminum canteens. We were sweating up a storm. None of my family members ever got sick, but several other people got very sick almost every day, they never took their salt tablets. It was horrible seeing them collapse and curl up underneath the vineyards vomit, shaking and delirious. Some we never saw again!

    This is the video ive been waiting for. Its all about the electrolytes folks. Only water will deplete you of minerals. You need more potassium more than likely if you're always thirsty, and probably magnesium. I always use dr bergs electrolyte powder and it actually feels like it quenched my thirst whereas before i could chug and be naseous and still be thirsty.

    I’m working out again after having a baby and then a back injury. I’m drinking electrolytes (Redmond Relyte) twice/day now or a little more if I’m working out. I’m still breastfeeding and it makes a huge difference with my energy, and I also have had no major muscle soreness from my heavy leg workouts. It’s incredible and I can’t believe I used to deal with so much muscle soreness when I used to train heavily years ago …and times I used it think I had low blood sugar, often now after taking my electrolytes I feel much better. All that time, I just needed more salt 🤯

    it's fairly easy to add electrolytes back into your water. I've been doing it for a while and I can definitely tell the difference.
    I have a 1-litre stainless steel hydroflask I take everywhere. I fill it about halfway with water, toss in a dash of sea salt, empty a couple of capsules of potassium citrate, a cap or two of magnesium citrate or gluconate, a small amount of honey or sugar or ginger syrup, and a half an ounce to an ounce of apple cider vinegar. Sometimes I'll throw in some lime juice, if I have it, and a dash of powdered ginger.
    (for taste).
    It takes about 1 minute to transform plain water into amazing electrolyte water.
    Oh, once all the ingredients are added, I fill it the rest of the way with water, (always filtered), leaving just an inch or so at the top so I can shake up all the ingredients and get it mixed into the volume of water, instead of settling at the bottom, or floating on top.
    The vinegar/lime juice helps to break up the surface tension of the powders so they mix properly.

    Yup. Had this happen. Hiked from the Grand Canyon rim down to the river and back. Silly me left my electrolyte powders back in my motel room. It was 105 degrees. So I drank a LOT of water. By the time I started coming back up my body was rebelling. Vomiting every 100 meters or so. Luckily a ranger got hold of me halfway up and made me stop.

    Yeah, I learned this the hard way recently. Wound up in the hospital, twice in two months. First trip, I was there two days, and they couldn't get their crap together, or figure out what was wrong. So I told them just to send me home.
    Second trip to a different hospital, they ran a bunch of tests and had me in and out in under 8 hours. Turns out, I was drinking TOO much water, and became extremely dehydrated to the point my entire body froze up and I couldn't move for 20 minutes. Thought I had a stroke at the time. Second time was even worse.
    Taking electrolytes, a few different vitamins, and drinking some water with ACV and lemon every morning really helped.

    The water I've just been drinking in the north of Norway compared say to London tap water is chalk and cheese! In fact, I once attended a tea connoisseur gathering at Fortnum & Mason in Regent Street and watched as all the connoisseurs tasted the various varieties of so-called 'tea', and I got some real nasty looks when I spoke quite loud and reminded them that it was London tap water they were all savouring! Distilled rain water has gotta be the very best you can do for your health, and especially if it's been hit by lightning on the way down to ensure it's full of electrolytes, lol! 🌧

    I had hyponatremia. When I started using creatine monohydrate, I thought I should consume 4-5 liters of water per day. This caused electrolyte imbalances and possibly a dilution of vitamin B12. Despite drinking more than enough water all the time, I felt dehydrated. Then, I stopped drinking a lot of water and, instead, started to take salt in its raw form (a small amount, of course), and everything went back to normal. I also took 500mcg of B12 2-3 times a day. I experienced heart palpitations and arrhythmia, among other things, but especially these two. Now, everything is back to normal.

    Wonderful info here. 3 months ago, I started drinking water with some sea salt and a squeeze of lemon or lime juice, first thing in the morning. And then drinking sugar free Gatorade packets mixed in a 16oz bottle of water or when I work out. More so when I'm working out outside in this southern heat n humidity in June going into summer.

    I do drink a lot of water. I'm almost 300 pounds from working out. But, I do add cracked pink salt to my 1.9 sports jug, and it's making a big difference. For one, it helps me recover during work with the microminerals in them. Second, it is delicious. Add some ice cubes with pink salt, and I find it quite refreshing. I even put them with sparkling mineral water as a drink for the end of the day.

    Yea I figured out i was imbalanced myself just in the nick of time. I now drink coconut water with regular water.
    Also, I had to switch to spring water because I thought the Sodium Carbonate they put in water was dehydrating me.
    Also, the best and proper way to drink water, or any beverage is to sip it, not gulp it.

    Thank you @Dr. Eric Berg DC a year ago I was drinking a gallon of midnight chocolate promise land and a gallon and half of Gatorade and about a cup of water a day (BAD SHAPE) Now I'm drinking about two cups of water and two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and a teaspoon of lemon I'm feeling and recovering from bad bad diet lost 140 lbs. 10 inches off waist down to 198 lbs.     I have competition Horses. We know how important electrolytes are. We also know how to treat joint inflammation. We dont Train or rehab them. We treat their joint with IRAP =stamcells by their own blood centrifugated. They rest and Then we rehab them. They get well for competition again. So we also do the same on ourselves. PRP/irap in joints .Not Cortison. NO arthritis.

    I’m battling Cystic Fibrosis & I deal with chest tightness & lot of phlegm. I find that drinking water loosens my airways & reduces & thins the phlegm. I’m now drinking 1.5 to 2 litres of water a day. 🇨🇦

    I've been experiencing migraines on a weekly basis for about 5 months now. I stopped eating processed foods. I knew they were inflammatory and I wanted to get rid of putting them into my body. But I was still getting the migraines. And after listening to a podcast about electrolyte imbalances I realized I might be drinking far too much water. I'm pretty sure the electrolyte imbalances have been a major factor in causing my migraines. I've been adding salt to my salads, which I never did before and take a pinch of salt when i'm drinking water. I haven't had a migraine since I tried this out. I'm still testing this but so far so good. I've also been taking sips of coconut water for electrolytes whenever I feel like I've been drinking a bit too much water.

    So interesting, I used to drink WAYYYYYYY too much water! And I never used added salt 🧂 I now drink wayyyyy less, 1 LITER in the morning, and one liter at night ✨maybe 2. And now I salt my meals. It’s kinda weird, now that I slowed down on my water, I’m never thirsty. Till nighttime. Oh and add my morning coffee and afternoon, so it’s a bit more) 😊

    Hi, thankyou for your very valuable knowledge about the quantity of water one should drink. I can recall drinking so much water in a short amount of time on one occasion that made my body weak, unbalanced and dizzy. Doctors told me all the water l drank in a short amount of time had diluted my blood which had caused these symptoms. I spent the next 24 hours in bed resting until l regained my balance. My motto in life 'Do everything in moderation ' and that includes the amount of water you drink and the time frame you drink water for a healthy life. Kind regards

    Takeaway.. If you lead a normal, healthy life with enough fruits and salt, dont worry about the amount of water you drink as long as its very well within reason e.g. an extra liter or 2 beyond some thirst isnt going to hurt you.. dont dont push that without electroyltes and watch alcohol around this topic (see video)

    about 20 years ago i watched a documentary about a guy who was lost out in a wooded area in the sweltering heat, he had plenty of water to drink from a stream but he drank so much that he was delirious from 'washing' all the salts out of his body

      That's because the water was low in minerals. Proper Sodium & Water balance eliminates that problem. Hyponatremia (what the guy in the documentary experienced) can be worse than dehydration.

    I once was severely dehydrated as a teen and my grandpa made me eat a jar of pickles in addition to drinking water.
    He couldn't really explain why he just knew it would help me.

    It really blew my mind when I learned that water doesn't actually hydrate you. What actually hydrates you are the minerals and electrolytes carried inside of that water. It also depends on how big these minerals and stuff are. If they are too big then you're body can't absorb them as efficiently. Water is basically just a vessel for vitamins, minerals and water. If you drink water that has been stripped of all this stuff, like distilled water, then you'll actually dilute the amount of vitamins, minerals and electrolytes already in your body. Causing less functional efficiency. And then once you pee it all out you're really dehydrated and have less vitamins, minerals and electrolytes. This really blew my mind.
    Just a side note. I think water companies strip a lot of the vitamins, minerals and electrolytes out of their bottled water just so we have to keep drinking more and buying more water. When in reality it doesn't even really hydrate us as much as it should.

    Dude, I'm like you I need water like 1 to 2litres because if i dont I get constipated, bladder infections, and feel like a dried out plant. But I eat watermelon for potassium, sorry not keto, and I love seasalt (iodised) and I have avocado for potassium too!!!

      You could try Cream of Tarter crystals - I take 1 tsp throughout the day. It's in alot of baked food & it's potassium but start small, you don't want to overdo this.

    Great video! I've been watching all Dr Berg's videos that relate to water, hydration and electrolytes, as I've recently discovered that I'm chronically dehydrated, and have potentially been so for years. I've had terrible health for years - adrenal exhaustion, fibromyalgia etc etc - and tried just about everything with little improvement. I was always forcing myself to drink heaps of plain water, because it was what doctors and naturopaths were always telling me to do. Despite this, I was always constipated too, and that's just gotten worse and worse over the years.
    I'm confused about the sugar thing, though. I started adding salt to water a few years ago, and though I think it helped a bit, I always noticed that when I had something with sugar in it (especially if I added salt) I felt a lot better - like I was actually taking the water in. So just a month or so ago I started drinking (very) diluted pear juice with some salt in it (sea salt). After that very first glass I felt heaps better. So I have stuck with it (I have almost a litre of this a day, not all at once, of course), and I am feeling like things are really shifting with my health (including my bowels!). It wouldn't be the potassium in the pear, as my symptoms actually get much worse when I have potassium in any form. I'm going to keep doing this, as it's definitely helping me, but am curious to know what others think about the sugar part?

    In USMC boot camp there was a thing the DIs would do to the recruits called waterbowl IT. Waterbowl being canteen and IT being incentive training. They would make these poor guys drink and drink and drink until they were throwing up water. Thankfully I never had to do that but years later when I discovered you can actually die from drinking too much water I wondered how they were able to get away with such a thing.

    Thank you Dr. Berg for getting the information out on how to hydrate better, and although I am a water fanatic, I know that too much of a good thing would not work as well as a moderate amount even in fasting

    I believe you drink more than the daily recommended amount of water. 8 cups of water. 8 oz (1 cup) * 8 = 64 Oz. 64 oz = 1.9 liters < 2.5 L. I take one Flavcity electrolytes packet, contains sea salt and flavored by fruits, no sugar. I'm not even sure I drink 8 cups a day, but I sip water through out the day, don't take big gulps. I feel I'm hydrated.

    So true! Everytime I've forced myself to drink more water because I'm "supposed" to, I feel like crap.
    On the flip side, keeping my electrolytes balanced makes me feel GREAT! I tried a different electrolyte powder brand recently, and I started feeling bad...low energy, hungry more often, achey. I switched back to my usual powder and feel much better. I just ordered some of Dr. Berg's powder and can't wait to try it!

    Just FYI , I would NOT suggest Powerade or Gatorade for electrolytes. If you read the ingredients on the back it contains “ natural flavors “. When you google natural flavors you maybe surprised to see what’s in it.

      Is it enough if I just put himalayenne salt into the water? Ive been only drinking water my whole life and never had any issues and now im not sure if I should change it. Sometimes I wake up in the night to pee and I want to stop that, so maybe its because I only drink water. Should I do the same as you?

      I have noticed that putting some himalayens salt does help me because i am on low carb. May be try a little and see how you feel. I also do a lot of sport and i sweat. Any way himalayens salt is the best health wise. Wish you the best.😊

      If you are not a diabeatic, try stop drinking after 8 pm. It will help to go to the bathroom less frequant.😊

    I use the water intake formula that several hospital nurses have told me through the years. Using body weight in pounds, not kilos, and water in ounces, not milliliters, as kilos and/or milliliters throws off the equation, the formula is Body weight in pounds ÷ 2 = ounces of water intake a day. Obviously this is a general guide. I'm 300 lbs so that would be about 150 ounces or approximately 4 1/2 quarts, but that's the total water intake for the entire day unless I'm in unusual circumstances. I also use Himalayan Pink salt as it has 80 different minerals in it. I dissolve a level 1/4 teaspoon of the salt in some hot water in the morning. Once fully dissolved, I add enough cold water to bring it down to warm and drink it as part of my daily water intake and it has helped me.

    This really does make perfect sense to me. I’ve never felt good trying to force myself to guzzle a lot of water. I really stepped back to think with common sense about it, and drink when you are thirsty makes the most sense. I’m going to try and add some healthy salt, fresh ground, I like Oryx desert salt. 😊
