    Here on TheTopher, I'm known for putting a camera on my face and driving cars. Whether it's about any of my personal cars or reviews on weekly test vehicles, the goal is to give you an idea of what a certain car is like to drive or live with. Most of my videos are filmed in POV, with my clothes on, and (for like the 5th time) with in-ear binaural audio. Which, if I haven't made it clear yet, is why you should wear headphones. Because of the whole "woah" factor. It's there, trust me. Try it, you'll see! Or don't. As long as you whitelist me on your adblocker I'm okay with whatever you do or don't do with regards to headphone usage. That is all. Oh and I guess you should also probably subscribe. Why are you still reading this, you should be watching the video. With headphones! Hah, had to sneak that in there one more time. Later!

    I won't be satisfied until TheTopher reviews every car ever made lol your the only one with the balls to exceed maximum load in the corners in your drives. That said I have been searching for a review like this on the new impreza sport (because the sport has the torque vectoring AWD similar to the WRX) and is the enthusiasts pick as far as the normal impreza goes and you're literally the first person to review the sport 5 speed so thanks man.

      It's not easy to find a review for the Impreza Sport where the reviewer (1) drives the damn thing and (2) goes anywhere close to its limits. Throw in the manual, and this might be the only TH-cam review that does either of those things.
      I'm glad he went into ride quality, noise, and (especially) handling, though handling on something more twisty and fun than a cloverleaf on-ramp would have been nice. That's what matters to me. Rarely do I even want to go 0 to 60 in less than 10 seconds, but I want to have as much fun as I can in whatever daily driver I have.

      @@tom.k7616 I've heard the 2022 Impreza may have new stronger engines, possibly a small turbo, or a bigger naturally aspirated one. If on the market for a new car NOW, I would be looking at a Mazda 3 AWD with the 2.5L engine and regular automatic tranny (no CVT thank God). There aren't any cheap alternatives like the old more torque'y Impreza's of the past. I have a 2013 2.5L Forester turbo, but still keep my old trusty 2000 2.2L Impreza Coupe, ...such a practical, lighweight, fuel efficient and still somewhat torquey car. I used to drive in the Sierras often, but now I don't due to Covid pandemic.

    So, I've gotta say, you sold me on this car. I mean, I actually bought one. I'm just sad they didn't have a manual car within 500 miles of where I live. Got it in the lighter blue and I love it. Takes corners nicely, too, which is surprising for a car that weighs more than my old outback did.

I built one of these cars on the Subaru website and it appears that the STI short-throw shifter is STANDARD! It's normally a $400 option. That's why you find it so enjoyable. I agree with your comment about gear spacing. 6 speed manuals are commonly spaced way too closely especially 4-6. It just seems really stupid to me. It’s total nonsense that a car with a 6 speed manual should be turning over 2500 rpm at 70 mph. It’s a waste of gears honestly. And then some 6 speeds have the audacity to make 1-3 really wide and then cluster 4-6 super close You can get away with skipping 5th altogether in most 6 speeds. Don’t even get me started on the Honda fit. 6 gears and it turns 3300 rpm at 70. The cvt will happily do 2200 rpm at 70. The chevy cruze is not terrible, but 1-3 are extremely wide! I really like Volkswagen’s 5 speed manual because it’s spaced perfectly for casual driving and it keeps the jetta at like 2000 rpm at 70 mph, in a 5 speed! I personally like a close 1-2, around 60-65% so I can short shift and not have to drive around in 1st gear because 2nd gear is too tall. 2-3 can be almost anything, but spacing between 3-6 should never be any closer than 25% for regular cars. Ideally more like 30-35%. A perfect 6 speed would have ratios like 4.86, 3.00, 2.00, 1.43, 1.09, 0.83, and reverse around 5.00. The final drive should match the car though, and keep the rpms between 2000 -2300 at 70.

    • @CorneliusOfford
      @CorneliusOfford 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Wow! Someone else who likes gear ratios like I do. My last vehicle was a manual, and when purchasing a 2015 honda Fit I was pissed that 6th does 4000rpm at 80mph! Thats what the previous generation 5th gear did. They should have kept 5th where it is and had 6th doing 3200rpm or so. I got the CVT just for the cruising rpm being much lower. My CVT even up big hills rarely downshift to above 3100 rpm so 6th at 3200 rpm would work with very little downshifting. The engine is loud in the Fit, when I put my CVT into sport mode and the rpms jump up to where the manual sits there is constant engine drone even in cruise control! I can't imagine a 12 hour road trip in the manual fit. In the cvt, the engine noise isn't noticeable when cruising at all.
      I generally prefer the gear spreads you describe, and I feel the golf GTI 6-speed DSG has the perfect ratios. I generally prefer larger spreads to the gears. Like a 6 speed with a 6.5 total ratio spread rather than a closer 6 speed with a 5.0 total ratio spread.

    • @godgirlsguitars
      @godgirlsguitars 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My man! Both of you! I'll use a 7 speed manual for example. I'd like the ratios to be spaced like this. 2nd gear at 15 mph at 1,000 rpms. 3rd gear at 25 mph at 1,000 rpms. 4th gear at 35 mph at 1,000 rpms. 5th gear at 45 mph 1,000 rpms. 6th gear at 55 mph at 1,000 rpms. 7th gear at 60 mph at 1,000 rpms.

    • @kujiko88
      @kujiko88 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      My knowledge of ratios is extremely limited, but I have to agree. I have a 5 speed and in 5th 70 is around 2850rpm. 75 is just a bit over 3000. So Freeway driving is a bit of a chore on the engine over long distances. I might see if I can get 4th and 5th to be stretched out some so I can get 75 at around the 2750 mark or something.

    • @godgirlsguitars
      @godgirlsguitars 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Owen yep, gear ratios are way too short. You're probably sitting at 20 or 22 mph at a 1,000 rpms in 5th gear.

      @benmorris7276 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@marksphotoperry356 so the pitch stop mount is exclusive to Subarus and its one of the more universal parts it essentially attaches the drive train to the fire wall. The OEM pitch stop is what we call a chicken bone design is narrow in the middle and allows a little bit more flex by upgrading it to an aftermarket performance pitch stop mount like a Perrin or grimspeed one which are referred to as a dog bone style pitch there the same size all the way across and alot more soiled so it stiffens the connection in turn stiffening the chassis it doesn't allow for as much flex as the OEM pitch stop which will increase NVH slightly but will allow more power to transfer to the wheels It doesn't really increase horsepower or torque but helps with throttle response and like I said it helps put power down. The carbon air filter is an emission thing it's prevent emissions to come back out through the air intake when the car is shutoff. It sits in the air intake box behind the engine air filter it causes a restriction of air flow which decreases power and torque by removing it will increase horsepower and torque slightly especially with a drop in performance filter i prefer the AEM dry flow filter. This was dyno tested by engineering explained he has a video on it. Another thing that will increase horsepower and torque are Crawford Billet power blocks the lift the intake manifold increasing the amount of air sucked into the engine.these mods don't require a tune but a tune will maximize their potential gains. With the BPB will work even better with a proper cold air intake and a tune. And mod for reliability is an Air oil separator it reduces oil consumption crossed by blow by and since it's a closed loop it allows the oil to cycle back through system and in the case of the FB20D the engine in the 2017+ Impreza which is a direct injection rather than port injected the air oil separator will also help prevent carbon buildup in the intake manifold with over time reduces power and torque out put.

    I think lot of people fail to understand how the power is delivered on boxer engines, compared to a traditional three or four cylinder layout. I have a three cylinder turbo Suzuki, and it pulls like a train at low revs, and never really need to go above 3000 rpm unless overtaking or just simply wanting a bit of fun on a fast winding road. The Abarth 595 I used to have was the same, low down pull and eventually the power tails off after about 4-5000 rpm, but Subaru are very different in that it seems the more revs you give it, the more they seem to pull, but as this man says, not a lot happening below 3000 rpm. Doesn’t make it a bad engine, it just works opposite to the way most people are used to, especially with no turbo kicking in low down the rev range. The one bonus is these engines sound fantastic even when the revs are higher, but thats how it wants to be driven and was designed that way. Id be more than happy to own one of these. In the UK Subarus are a rare sight on our roads, and that makes ownership feel that bit more special. Our roads are filled with German lease cars over here, its boring, people are boring, they are obsessed with torque, we have a lot of aggressive bad drivers on our roads, everyone in a rush. The point is, so long as a car has enough power for normal driving conditions then thats good enough for me. Subaru are tough, long lasting cars, and im hoping to get one next as a long term purchase.

    We have a 2018 base trim hatchback. We have the CVT. Ivv be will zonk this car on two things. One, is it needs more power. I think that if Subaru would just offer a 2.5 it would solve the power problem. And the /.5 gets virtually the same mpg. The next ZONK IS VERY FRUSTRATING. We have lost 12 hubcaps. Com-on Subaru. Put some wheels on the base model. We have put 67,000 miles on this Subaru. The only problem that we have had, is it had a faulty battery. Subaru replaced it under warranty. Now, just to let you know. We also own a 2022 Subaru Impreza premium sedan. Again, I will zonk the week engine. Outside of that, it’s a good car. It will go in for its first service in about 500 miles. We also own a 2020 premium trim Forester. Has 13000 miles on it. A great vehicle. No problems. As you can see, we are loyal Subaru owners.

    Wonder if they fixed this new generation. I had a 2012 Impreza and I've had a lot of small annoying problems with it in the four years of ownership. It burnt quite a bit of oil and required top ups between services, the stop-start system often stalled the engine, it had lots of squeaks and rattles and the driver's seat ended up breaking on one side, leaving it lop sided.
    It also felt slow and underpowered, even compared to my dad's Ford Fiesta, which was pretty annoying. It was not a car that rewarded the driver for driving it at anything beyond a leisurely pace, due to both performance and the whiny, lethargic engine/exhaust note. For reference, both the Fiesta and Impreza were manual.
    Some of those issues were addressed by Subaru and some were "within factory specs".
    I ended up selling it and getting a 7 year old Honda Accord Euro, which is a much better car in every single way.
    On the plus side, the AWD was great in dirt and snow, visibility was great and fuel economy, while quite poor for city driving was quite good on flat terrain when sitting on a freeway. The best I got was 5.1 l/100 km over 600 km.

    • @jp_0118
      @jp_0118 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Personally, I don't like the way the new Jetta looks, but being a 1.4 TSI, it's gonna have more punch than the FB20 in the Impreza, and the interior may be that little bit nicer in terms of materials (I haven't sat inside the new Jetta yet, just seen the photos and specs). If you like a back to basics approach to the compact saloon with the additional advantage of AWD, then it's the Impreza. But if you're after a bit more cachet, a slightly nicer interior and a turbo engine, then it's the Jetta. Either way both have comparable tech, space, and economy numbers.

      I owned a 2014 Toyota 86, 2011 Impreza, and now a 2015 WRX.
      The engine response and feel of Impreza and 86 (BRZ) have similarities. The Impreza handles really well with the low centre of gravity and AWD. I didnt say they are exactly the same, but in overall effect, the Impreza is like an AWD, comfort-oriented BRZ that is slightly slower.
      The WRX feels very different - the twin turbo changes the engine response entirely, with most of your torque at the lower RPMs, which is the opposite on BRZ (high RPM torque)

    • @MyGoToUserName
      @MyGoToUserName 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's noticeably slower than a BRZ. My girlfriend has a 2020 Impreza and it takes it sweet time to accelerate. It also feels quite smooth to rev out combined with the longer gearing.
      The brz has a much livelier powerband with the engine actually pulling above 5000rpm, combined with shorter 6 speed gearing.
      Overlooking the boring engine it's quite nice.

      Dima Kavetskyy That's not true. Manual sales are declining globally as well. As for the U.S., we don't buy very many manuals, but, surprisingly, there are some cars offered with manuals simple because the U.S. does manage to buy enough of them. The Crosstrek is one example and the 911 GT3 is one more. Not many markets buy them in manual, but the U.S. is one of the very few markets where sales are stronger enough to support limited sales of them. If you want to complain and nit pick, don't cry when they're gone entirely.

    good review. Traditional Subaru strongholds are in mountainous or hilly areas where it snows and AWD is needed- the Cascades, the Sierras, the Rockies, Green Mountains. This engine is way underpowered for any type of mountain driving. It is an antithesis of a traditional torquey Subaru boxer engine car. Essentially it is a car for urban Millenial flatlanders. I am sure it looks good pictured with a canoe on the roof. A 5 speed or 6 speed makes no difference, ...except for the fact that a CVT renders it completely useless and dangerous in any kind of mountain driving, not to mention unreliable.

    • @omarmuhyar2005
      @omarmuhyar2005 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It’s a bit underpowered at lower revs but the CVT is actually the way to go and keeps it feeling peppy, despite not being a powerful car. Drive this at 5 - 11,000 feet in the Utah and Wyoming Rockies and have absolutely no problems. Did a trip up to Grand Targhee with 20 inches overnight and was passing pickup trucks up the mountain - with my trusty Blizzaks on.
      Have to flog it a bit more and it’s not going to win any races, but it’s actually perfectly balanced on mountain roads, grips well, and the torque vectoring is great in the snow to keep you from under steering.
      Came from an 09 Legacy 3.0r with 100hp more and honestly have no complaints, aside from it being slow from a complete stop or loaded with three people on board.
