I currently have a 2013 impreza with the manual transmission. I had some work done on it and the dealership gave me a 2017 impreza sport as a loaner. It felt a lot more solid, quiet and the interior was a lot more premium. The power and the mileage was about the same. I walked away thinking that it was a much better car to be in from day to day. It didn't feel so cheap inside. I thought it would be good to write a short impression of old vs. new. thanks for reading.
Rented the 2020 Impreza with almost the same bells and whistles. The adaptive cruise control is an amazing day thing it has, did a drive to the south and it made the drive so easy. You could feel that it's a heavy little sedan, my rental was a sedan that showed 4,200gvwr but you could feel how planted it was on the highway. Pretty good gas mileage on it too, it was a cvt on my rental
Hit the nail on the head, he said the numbers are not all that matters. Too many people obsess over 0-60 times. I have no idea what my car does it in because I don't need to know, its quick enough for what I need.
When I was shopping for my current car, I drove about every new AWD car that I could buy for less than $55k, including offerings from all of the luxury brands. I also drove several FWD cars. After all of my research, I ended up buying an Impreza Limited 5-Door. I've now owned the car for almost a year and have just over 18,000 miles on it. So far it's been absolutely perfect! I can honestly say that it's the first car I've purchased that I haven't spent at least a little time wondering if I would have been happier buying something else. One note: Like he says, on paper, the acceleration is quite sluggish. The weird thing is that, to me at least, the Impreza actually feels a lot faster than it is when you drive it. The acceleration isn't any faster than what the video shows, but you'd swear it is. Maybe it's the growl of the boxer engine or the really tight turning ratio. Whatever it is, it's actually a lot of fun to drive. Keep in mind that I am comparing it not only to the Civic or Mazda 3, but also to cars like the Lexus GS and Audi A4.
Do you still have it and like it? I got the 2017 5-door limited as well after much research and checking out other brands. Wanted 5 doors and 4 wheel drive for under 40k. Gotta say about the accelration too - I think it's the traction and 4 wheel drive. If your not drag racing up to 150 but just trying to go from 0 to 50 around a small corner, these cars have zero slip and get going quick, even if the overall acceleration is indeed slow. My friend has a Mazda hatchback (obviously quicker) but when he gets in my Subaru he swears it takes off faster.
@@SameBasicRiff I actually ended up trading it in last year. I moved down to TX and since I no longer had as much need for the AWD, I didn't want to keep taking the hit in fuel economy. There were some tanks in the Impreza where I ended up averaging less than 25 MPG. I still love the way it drove, though I did sometimes get a bit frustrated with the CVT, but I think that was more a result of Subaru trying to make it mimic a 7-speed rather than just letting it function as a pure CVT. I'm pretty sure that's also a contributing factor to the poor fuel economy. The only other issue I had with it is that the infotainment system could sometimes be a bit finicky (freezing up, not connecting to my phone, etc.). I still think it's a great car, especially if AWD is an important feature, but it no longer made as much sense for me as it did up in Maryland.
@@a27rocks I find the CVT helps imo (I can keep the revs lower through various speeds) and my infotainment frooze up too but my subie dealership gave me a whole brand new one for free because of that, and no issues since. Congrats on moving to TX though. This Canadian needs that AWD ;)
@@SameBasicRiffI wasn't complaining about the fact that it has a CVT. I am actually a big fan of CVTs, especially when paired with smaller engines. I was complaining about the software that they put on it to force the CVT to have "shift points" and emulate gears like a normal transmission instead of just letting it stay in the optimal RPM range. So I've got a question about the Canadian Impreza. I heard that it has auto stop-start for the engine and a heated steering wheel. Is that right? Neither of those features was even an option in the states.
@@a27rocks Hmm I thought the fake gears were to KEEP it in the optimal RPM range. I guess I could be wrong. I'm not sure what "auto stop start" for an engine means. I do have a remote starter but that was extra. It has push botton start/ stop (no keys) but that should be on the US model too, no? The top trim level has a heated steering wheel option though ya. What we dont get (and I wish we did because its way more useful) is the tire pressure monitor! We still have to check tire pressure manually.
Just traded in my 2017 Honda Civic hatchback EX. Had the car for 10 months, put snow tires on it, I know how to drive but it sucked in the snow. Just purchased a 2018 Subaru Impreza Sport hatchback. Yeah I gave up the power train but my Impreza is awesome in all weather. Go Subaru!
Transmissions aren't great, not to mention the inevitable HEAD GASKET replacement at 100,000 miles @ $2k. Poor engine design, WHY is Subaru STILL allowed to get away with this?
@@4orrcountry Because the head gasket issue has been resolved. That was corrected from 2012 models and up. I agree they definitely had the head gasket issue for far to long and now that history will follow them, but it's simply not true anymore. Not to say they wont have other issues, only time will tell. So far their newer models like this Impreza are doing well and no better or worse than a modern civic.
I got a 2018 Crosstrek Limited and I absolutely love it. Coming from a 2014 WRX Hatch, I do miss the power but as long as I don't try to drive it like a WRX then it doesn't bother me. I really love the technology and the comfort. It's great for long road trips.
Girlfriend just bought an Impreza Premium. We compared it to the corolla and civic. In general we thought the subaru was much more interesting than the drab and boring civic and corolla. I'm really impressed with the Impreza's ride quality and general feeling of solidity.
I love my 2018 Impreza Sport. A nice quiet comfortable ride, plenty of power on the highway, handles fantastic. The 8 inch infotainment system is the best that I have ever seen. No complaints at all.
I have 2018 impreza sport with 3000km in it so far. Loving it. Simple interior, comfortable, quiet, fantastic visibility, very good on fuel and the android auto standard. May not be fast, but is kinda fun to drive through curvy road.
I have this one in white and I love it. It’s practical, luxurious, and fun to drive in any weather condition. It has everything that I need and want in it, and has nothing that I don’t need. Subaru forever
Sounds a good commuter in non-snow states (quiet, good ride, handling) and a great car in snow states. Coming from a no-snow state (except for Tahoe) I tend to forget what a mess it can be without AWD in snow states. This sounds like one of the very few vehicles that has AWD plus a sporty side.
Drove one of these as a Zipcar for half a day....initial throttle tip-in was ok, but it was pretty gutless otherwise. The Mazda3 with the 2.5 liter is way zippier and has much tighter steering too.
i just had one for a day as loaner, my first time in an Impreza. I liked the steering which was direct and had a nice weight to it. The CVT and brakes are a lot better than my larger Outback, however this car needs more power. If I was in the market for a compact car I would seriously consider it if it had more power.
Finally!!! An Impreza review! This was an honest review! Not bias yet not harsh. Have this car and I love it! I agree numbers isn't everything. My complaints with this car is I wish Subaru didn't comprise the tank size, wish it had a heated steering wheel, wish my Limited trim had LED fog lights, 8-way seating and memory seats would of been nice. However I'm satisfied of what I have. Coming from a 1999 Ford car. Great review Redline!!
One thing not mentioned in this review is that those faux carbon fiber bits on the interior reflect lights at night and so if you are driving on a lit street, they become very distracting / annoying. Agree with the review regarding the slowness of the power plant. Give this model 170 - 180hp and you'll have a cult following. That's all this thing really needs.
Glad to finally have a review that isn't just a lot of complaining about the underpowered engine. However, you misrepresent a few things here. 19k buys you the 2.0i. What you are driving is the Sport trim, which starts at 23k. This changes a lot of things. The 2.0i has a different suspension and brakes than the rest of the line. It feels a lot more sloppy and brakes kind of poorly in wet weather. The sport is the nicest feeling of the bunch as it takes the suspension of the premium and limited and tunes for a tighter ride. The sport is also the only impreza to get the torque vectoring. Sport makes 2 mpg less than the rest. The car is really good at knowing when to cut fuel and when to add it, so 30 minutes of driving won't give you a good number. Sport also adds the nicer infotainment system, push button start, and nicer styling in and out. You get a lot for the 4k difference, but you can't tell people that your experience represents the 19k price tag. Add in eyesight and your price tag goes up 2k. Add in one of the common packages that gives you the harmon kardon sound system and other things and you add another 2k. I have a sport trim 2017 in black and I love it, but it was a 27k car. Girlfriend is paying 25k for hers.
I live in Canada, where there is awful lot of snow. That's the fun of it to have a impreza. please review and test it in snow to distinguish its superiority.
That was a great review! Between my wife and I, we've owned five Subarus and may end up with a sixth soon. I for one appreciate that they kept the manual e-brake in the car, electronic ones are fine but you lose some basic functionality too. A manual option is great too, though I think you have to get it with the base or Sport/Premium models, no Limited as memory serves.
We just bought a new one for my brother. Cheapest possible configuration: manual, at $19,124. It’s probably the best value out there for a certain segment of driver: utility, rugged, awd, etc. The new platform provides better seats, better ride/handling and yes, is much more taut. if you’re into driving dynamics, I would scrap all of this Asian stuff and buy a VW Golf or better yet, get a 3 series BMW used, for less, with the N52 engine. Much better driver’s cars. But if a reliable workhorse is needed that does everything pretty well, for 19,124, and awd!!!, it’s a no brainer. The real world crash-worthiness of Subarus is well attested. They’re made in Indiana, making this at least some help to the USA.
You can get remote start option from factory if you order one, but yes, any brand new Impreza you buy off the lot will not be preloaded with that option. I saved a few hundred bucks by having the factory install it vs the dealer.
Well im again impressed with your style of the great way you review these vehicles bro, it's informative, thorough & a nice approach to giving us a fair and honest look into a great second hand vehicle, I've been a subby fan for years, i call em bulletproof sometimes because there just that damn good! Again great job Indeed, thank you
Good review! Hope you do a review for the new Crosstrek soon too! That's the one I'm looking extra hard at right now. And if you do the test drive in nasty deep snow, all the better.
If the older impreza has more hp and torque than the new impreza but both do 0 to 60 in about the same time does the older impreza still feel more powerful because of its extra hp and torque or is it just a wash?
Do know if the will ever bring the Subaru Levorg to the US? I'm read some articles where they're planning to bring it in 2019 I'm not sure if it's true though. The Levorg is the missing link in the Subaru lineup here in the state
I have been driving for well over a decade.. Ive operated litterally everything from a school bus to a geo metro both auto and standard transmission.. Im sold on subaru. Im driving a 2008 hatchback impreza sport. Im done with all others including the last car which was a very much loved corolla with a manual... Miss the fuel economy but awd there is only one affordable king... Im a subie fan now and for life!
Best AWD new Subaru to buy in the UK, simply because its the lightest and has plenty enough power with 154bhp. If its not quick enough for the moaners on here, then its not for you so why bother complaining about its lack of turbo or bigger engine etc blah blah. Some of us understand what Subaru are all about in 2019. Safety and comfort is their priority. Want a fast hatch ? Buy a Golf R.

Consistently gives good OBJECTIVE reviews about cars driven. And also preferences and dislikes. It would help if while conveying the stats, it would be helpful to show #'s on the video and show it for around 8sec ; Or depending how much data is being displayed. A little humor, spontaneous review might also be entertaining and not too monotone. Especially for long reviews. Otherwise, I'll keep watching.
The new Impreza just makes me like my 2012 manual Impreza even more. The new one is bigger and heavier, not really any faster or more powerful, and with the manual, the mileage actually got worse. Plus it's loaded with tech features that I'm not interested in and which will just become obsolete in a few years anyway.
My 2012 Impreza's fuel economy, revised according to the 2017+ standards, is 24 city, 33 highway, 28 combined. (It was originally 25/34/28 before the revision.) The equivalent 2017 Impreza is rated at 24 city, 32 highway, 27 combined.
+VWestlife I work at a Subaru dealership and have driven the previous gen and new impreza manual back to back. You're not missing out on much. The interior is nicer but the drivetrain is the same.
+VWestlife "loaded with tech features that i'm not interested in" - spoken like a true Luddite there. Sorry to burst your bubble but Apple Carplay and Android Auto will be around for a while, they're only gonna get better and more integrated with every new car. But then again it's software so you can always update it.
The Microsoft-based MyFordTouch system was an unmitigated disaster despite multiple updates attempting to fix all of its bugs (see Mercmilan06's "Focus Frustrations" videos). Hopefully all automakers have learned from that experience, but I'd rather not have a touchscreen computer permanently affixed to my car's dashboard, especially when it can crash and leave the radio playing even with the ignition turned off and doors locked.
reliability is plenty enough. compact cars are designed to get you from point A to Point B with little fuss. if your looking for something a little quicker, your not gonna find it in this category. get a camry or accord if you want something with a little more get up and go, those would be the 4 cylinder cars to look for. but those are designed for families, but a single person could buy one to. otherwise this is plenty for most people, most roads in America are filled with traffic. so your not gonna speed race to get somewhere in the city. im from NY, and trust me with the amount of traffic you get there a car like this that's good on gas and reliable is plenty.
We don’t have them with roof rails or sunroofs in my country. Best thing is, we have then in FWD only making them lighter and faster. If it has roof rails, it’s normally an XV model aka Crosstrek.
Would you say hatchback makes a car slower/quicker? I'm debating on a hatch or sedan and I like the Versatility of a hatch but don't want it to be any slower than it already is. What's your opinion redline?
Could be. I have the sedan version and it feels preppy to pick up speed. Drove the hatchback and it felt the opposite. Currently have the '17 model and I trained to transmission the pick up speed and it does a good job doing it but it's a compact car. I don't expect power to be a strong suit however nothing is bad as my 1999 Ford Escort.
Luke Hoisington In that case, the civic i believe is the hotrod of the class, the hatch comes with the 1.5T (only engine avaliable).Which goes to 60 in 7-7.5 seconds which is 2 seconds ahead of the Impreza. As far as the crus i believe it gets to 60 in like 7.9 or something like that.
It depends but the Mitsubishi mirage hatch is faster than the sedan by something like a full second 0-60. Hatches are usually smaller and usually more aerodynamic so it makes sense to assume such.
Still no temperature control? I hate having to adjust the analog climate control. This is a premium priced vehicle - needs temperature control instead of analog.
Still a middlepack pick of compact hatchbacks/sedans. The only real standout is AWD like always, but it falls behind in powertrain vs. leaders like the Civic or Mazda 3. If it only had a 2.5L engine with ~170hp I would rate it higher, but the 2.0L even with the bump in hp from 2017 doesn't change anything.
does it come in a manual? I really want a manual car, and id like something nice.. but if not this, maybe a Civic or a Mazda 3. Despite the lack of AWD. I don't really care if its not much faster than a Corolla.
The lower trims do. If you want things like led projector headlights, sunroof, leather, the bigger infotainment screen, and the I-sight features then no not in the manual only in the cvt.
Hope this car has a more powerful engine option which has 190 horsepower, sure there is the WRX, but it is a little too performance oriented even in standard version for some people
i don't know much about this car's CVT, but i think my suzuki kizashi has a better CVT. From the sound of it, my suzuki has better response and it can actually sound and feel like a traditional automatic. And in Manual mode, it shifts up and down so well tho still would prefer a manual transmission, but the sports AWD didn't come with it.
I know this is totally subjective but I absolutely can't stand Subaru's seats. My wife has a Crosstrek and it's an amazing car, except the seats give me back pain. The lumbar support is too aggressive and it's nonadjustable. I tested the 2017 Impreza when I was in the market for a new car earlier this year, but ultimately went with a lightly used Volvo V60 primarily because of the seats.
I would have gotten the new impreza if it were for that underpowered engine. Just give us a turbo because subaru is slow af when it comes to making a redesigned wrx

I’m pretty sure the GPS navigation is by TomTom
We need a new redline review of the 2018 Subaru Crosstrek limited edition. Keep up the great work. Love the vids.
Not full LED. Blinkers are still halogen blinking.
Hey, that's the cost of getting AWD for cheap.
Yeah that part kind of irritates me.
then put in the LEDs yourself or have someone do it for you.
Again great job Indeed, thank you
What I got from this review was that you were impressed with the Impreza lol
Pretty much! And we weren't expecting that.
Redline Reviews Haha.
Hey looks like you dropped a few Pounds? Lookin good bro!
Great concise practical review. I didn’t know about the fold down tray in back. I’m gonna check that out. Thanks!
Love this review. To the point, on point
please review the new one in the sport trim. i love your reviews, keep up the great work. 💪🏽
Being waiting on this one. Wasn't a fan of the 4th gen, this one looks way better 😁. Love your reviews btw
Great on gas, practical and awd. Sounds good to me.
Good review! Hope you do a review for the new Crosstrek soon too! That's the one I'm looking extra hard at right now. And if you do the test drive in nasty deep snow, all the better.
Thank you for your detail and comparison report of other cars! Well done!
How is the comfort/suspension over bumps and harsh roads?
I liked the review, you're thorough.
Do you have an Elantra GT Sport on the schedule yet?
Xavier Urbina Yup, we’ll be getting the car next month! Stay tuned :)
Redline Reviews yes! hype af
Thanks again for another great review! And I really enjoy your personality
Been considering this car, everything sounds pretty good from this review. Are the speakers good???
Eek please never discourage mechanical handbrakes... Loved the review though!
Will you be doing a review on the 2020 Impreza?
How quite is the interior from road noise?
Seems like a nice car, and unique. Like the review and the car; I have never owned a Subaru. Nice burgundy red color.
In Canada, the top trim has dual zone climate control.
9.5 seconds? A second slower than my 2011 Corollla? Why just why? Is it the CVT?
Whats all that clicking? The armrest? Or the camera?
Since it was not mentioned. I assume they lost the double wishbone front setup.
it would be nice if they could match or better hondas 1.5 turbo 173hp 30-40mpg
Nice review well done, however please hold the steering wheel properly in order to drive safety and gave a good example to young drivers :)
We have Impreza also in FWD only in my country, so that makes it around 200 pounds lighter.
Do you have the new Compass or Ford Edge with the V6 on the list to review? I really want to see someone review the new Jeep Compass.
Taylor Reynolds We’ve requested both, keep checking back on our social channels for all the latest press cars we’re testing. We have some good ones coming up :)
Have you driven the Impreza Sport with 5 speed manual? What are the revs at highway speeds? Thanks for the detailed review!
A map pocket? So you put your phone in there?
Don't think we don't hear you bouncing off that rev-limiter!! Love from California!
If you look at industry averages as a whole, they've gone down this year due to stricter ratings.
I wish they’d put a good motor in that thing. It’d be perfect!
Peter Raizis That's what WRX will come in to place since it will be in the same platform unlike the current one.
But no hatch version!
it's fine the way it is. you don't need every car to hit 8 sec from 0-60 all the time. all you need is reliability.
Reliability isn't good enough for everyone. Some of us find slow cars frustrating to drive.
reliability is plenty enough. compact cars are designed to get you from point A to Point B with little fuss. if your looking for something a little quicker, your not gonna find it in this category. get a camry or accord if you want something with a little more get up and go, those would be the 4 cylinder cars to look for. but those are designed for families, but a single person could buy one to. otherwise this is plenty for most people, most roads in America are filled with traffic. so your not gonna speed race to get somewhere in the city. im from NY, and trust me with the amount of traffic you get there a car like this that's good on gas and reliable is plenty.
Very nice review!
Excellent review.
Manual!!!!!!! Please please please and whats next as far as wrx sti
Will you review the 2018 Crosstrek, or is it too similar to the Impreza that you'll skip it?
T Sizzle Once Subaru loans it to us, we’ll be sure to do a full review :)
Did you go to the 2017 tokyo motor show? Did you saw the new BRZ STI? Please take a review of that car!
6:48 bro it legit says "TomTom" right there.
Are the roof rails removable? Some impreza versions do not have them and many folks do not want them
We don’t have them with roof rails or sunroofs in my country. Best thing is, we have then in FWD only making them lighter and faster. If it has roof rails, it’s normally an XV model aka Crosstrek.
Why do you constantly put your hands inside the steering wheel?
Flaviu Cos bad driving habits
Would you say hatchback makes a car slower/quicker? I'm debating on a hatch or sedan and I like the Versatility of a hatch but don't want it to be any slower than it already is. What's your opinion redline?
Luke Hoisington Honestly their both slow, you can't escape that.
Jonathan Washington I was talking about hatchbacks in general. Cruze, civic, impreza etc.
If it only had a 2.5L engine with ~170hp I would rate it higher, but the 2.0L even with the bump in hp from 2017 doesn't change anything.
mazda3 or impreza or new crosstrek, any suggestion???
Or wait for the next gen mazda6(18) or next gen mazda3(19)???
Xin Li buy a Geely
?
The 19 maz 3
Xin Li Corolla S
Sorry, no toyota~
Will you be doing the VW golf with the highest trim level soon? Do a comparison between these two hatchbacks.
Can you review the 2018 WRX STI? and compare the new platform with the STI's platform?
I would have preferred a 1.6l with turbo, would have provided a similar power output but a lot more torque.
I love my Impreza 2017 from Australia
How long is the warranty on Subaru’s?
How is it in the snow ?
Does the US have opel Astra K equivalent?
dylan lim Not anymore.
Can you review the 4 cylinder 2017 Forester?
Kia Stinger review coming up?
VolkswagenGamer Perhaps, maybe sometime next month ;)
does it come in a manual? I really want a manual car, and id like something nice.. but if not this, maybe a Civic or a Mazda 3. Despite the lack of AWD. I don't really care if its not much faster than a Corolla.
The lower trims do. If you want things like led projector headlights, sunroof, leather, the bigger infotainment screen, and the I-sight features then no not in the manual only in the cvt.
@@SweetLou0523 wtf that's so dumb
Hope this car has a more powerful engine option which has 190 horsepower, sure there is the WRX, but it is a little too performance oriented even in standard version for some people
i wish it had a D4s as in the Subaru BRZ, FA20D engine code
i don't know much about this car's CVT, but i think my suzuki kizashi has a better CVT. From the sound of it, my suzuki has better response and it can actually sound and feel like a traditional automatic. And in Manual mode, it shifts up and down so well tho still would prefer a manual transmission, but the sports AWD didn't come with it.
Sombody You Dont Know Keep in mind, that Suzuki was paired with a more powerful engine. That makes a pretty big difference.
Nice Review Of 2017 Subaru Impreza Limited. 😀
The turn signals are halogens so there not full led
They need a sub 2 liter turbo to get 180or so hp
I know this is totally subjective but I absolutely can't stand Subaru's seats. My wife has a Crosstrek and it's an amazing car, except the seats give me back pain. The lumbar support is too aggressive and it's nonadjustable. I tested the 2017 Impreza when I was in the market for a new car earlier this year, but ultimately went with a lightly used Volvo V60 primarily because of the seats.
sjwang40 I think you'll be a lot happier with the V60 anyways. That's a lot more car for the money.
Of course you will be more comfortable. Volvo is famous for its seats. AND it's non comparable with Subaru since it's a luxury territory. btw Enjoy!
I hope u review the 2018 crosstrek.
zoolanderhansel he basically already did the Subaru Crosstrek is a high Subaru Impreza hatch
would like to see if its suspension is up to the moonscaped roads of my little town.
I'd probably turn on the do not disturb on my phone.
wes mccauley Right? After filming this review, we made sure to do that before we start filming...
I would have gotten the new impreza if it were for that underpowered engine. Just give us a turbo because subaru is slow af when it comes to making a redesigned wrx
The WRX will offer the turbo. This is for daily driving.
