  • 2018 Subaru Impreza Sport TestDriveNow Video Review By Auto Critic Steve Hammes.
    Month after month, Subaru’s sales continue to rise; remarkable when you consider they don’t sell a traditional crossover or 3-row SUV. But Americans have bought into their all-wheel drive, dog-loving ways, attracted to their mix sedans, hatchbacks and wagons. This is the all-new, 2018 Impreza.

    Maybe this is a factor of me starting to think like an old man (my 30th bday is this week lol), but I actually really like the more traditional look of the car. It seems like a bit more of a class act. Other JDM cars these days (looking at you, civic) look like Gundams on wheels. Way too gaudy in appearance, the kind of "cool" the goes out of style in 5 years. That is, of course, just my opinion, appearance is as subjective as it gets

    I got my 2017 Impreza sport with all the upgraded features except for the eyesight and it’s black with my 25% tints. I love it. The video doesn’t do the car any justice. It looks “ok” here but when you see it in person, man it is nice as hell lol. I get a couple looks here and there. Maybe because I’m a woman... jk lol. I’ve owned a civic previously, 2013 sedan and a 2015 coupe, I must say this car is SO MUCH BETTER. My bf owns a 2017 civic and even he likes my car more. I have no problem with the power boost. Oh and I’ve only seen someone with the same car once.

With the snow we have been having, LOVE this car and get compliments all the time. Never thought I would go from a German car to a Japanese one.

    I actually own that car, color model everything 2017 model. It seems slow till 2000 rpm but it was designed for throttle response above 3000. It just kills on ramps I don't know it does a hundred plus without sweat it just seems genuinely fast. Maybe its an after break in thing but I haul ass "just saying". Also after 4500rpm it feels amazing and at home you are just not performance driving in this video?

    • @robshell5367
      @robshell5367 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Definitely. There was a big difference in performance after break in. I have been doing 85 and didn't realize it. Brakes really well also. It is funny when someone driving an Audi or Honda or some sports car, feels compelled to come flying up in the passing lane, get ahead and then just sit there. They just had to pass the black Subaru. Now they are king of the road. 35 to 36 REAL world mpg on the highway, with REAL all wheel drive. Who else can touch that? It is plenty fast. It is waaaayyy faster than its competitors who cant get out of there own way after 1/2'' of snow. It is great in the snow. Going straight anyone can do, it also flies through the corners. The bottom line is good mpg with great handling AWD for less money than a supposedly comparable Honda. Oh and if anyone wants to drive a car with an awful CVT? Drive a Honda. I thought it had a transmission problem.

    More in reference to the comments: if you just looked at peak hp and decided it's bad, you really don't get cars. Peak hp is part of a larger spectrum of qualities that determines performance. Go drive one. You'll feel the CVT rubber band a little, but it's enough power for traffic and highway use. You'll still be able to pass people. But if you set your cruise to eco mode and set it to 60 mph, you'll make 40+mpg on those long single lane country highways that are never exciting. The fun is when you find yourself taking a 25mph on ramp at 45 mph with little to no braking because it's balanced like a Subaru.

  • @jg4082
    @jg4082 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    I just got the 2018 sport hatch with the 5 speed. It’s well worth the added cargo capabilities and the manual gives you a good driving sensation. This car isn’t about power. But rather appearance, safety, AWD and a good driving experience. If you’re gonna complain about power just spend the extra 3-5k for a wrx but keep in mind those base models lack some of the features of the sport and insurance rates will go up

  • @QuinceM1

    Test drove 2017 Impreza Sport 5dr Canadian model with CVT. Was pretty imprezed. Great handling and CVT is one of the better ones I've tried. Do like the new Crosstrek but worried extra weight and worse aerodynamics will impact that fun-to-drive aspect I felt on the Impreza. It's a competent city and highway car that had the ability to drive through some snow and on gravel roads - what 90% of people in Canada and Northern US do.

      The more power the more fuel used usually. My VW beetle [original] model had 36 horsepower and it took me every where. The Subaru is not really lacking.

    • @Lilfick
      @Lilfick 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are totally right. Where is the need of that much power. We aint racing, must of us is driving to work everyday in common traffic (AND SNOW!). And power often comes with high cost maintenance, more fuel consumption and in the case of the wrx, you need premium fuel. Combine this with extra cost on insurance, all that because you want to overpass someone at 100-120 in couple of seconds... And show off your acceleration of course!

    • @heyaisdabomb
      @heyaisdabomb 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vincent Bouillon to me, it’s not about showing off, rather, I don’t like when I want to jump off the line at a light so I can get over and turn off, but can’t. Heck, even 200 hp would satisfy me, even if I pay an extra $10 a week at the pump. I don’t have high hopes though anymore as by 2025, they will all be fast feeling electric cars anyways. Electric motors all come down to stator size and copper fill. Larger = less stress and more power and one electric motor the size of traditional engines today produce far more power. Love or hate them, with 1000 mile ranges (in the size of a 100 mile battery today) thanks to battery improvements by 2030, it is the future of all cars, including the Impreza.

      V.C. That’s the real need. I chose a 2018 Impreza limited instead. Power is disappointing, but the interior and all of the tech is very good. At the end of the day, I’ll take less power for more functionality (hatchback). Why Subaru won’t listen, I don’t get it. Every video, every blog, every mention I see about the Impreza/arc/sti has a comment or many about bringing the hatchback back. It doesn’t sell as well? Then do it every other generation. What other awd hatch compact cars do we really have? Subaru has an open market place there.

    Most will compare the all new Impreza with the current gen Honda Civic sedan. I know the Impreza does not have a whole lot of power. Its actually meant to be a well balanced and practical sporty sedan for a compact AWD with good mpg. Its power is adequate with just enough pep to help get around busy traffic. From where I live....you can't always go as fast every time. If you want a Subaru and want more power then you go with the WRX or Sti. Many will choose the Honda Civic over the New Impreza but realize & see on how many out there with the same car as you. The majority you will see are Civics and Corollas. The Impreza can be reliable too and stand out from its competitors.

      TakumiBunta86 Very true. We've had our 2017 Impreza for about a year now and have yet to see another one on the road here in California. I know they are more popular back east. We do see a billion Accords, and civics. At one stop light we counted 5 exact same model accords. And they all probably thought theirs was better than the one next to them lol. Glad we opted for the less popular Impreza. We love it. And yes it plenty powerful on the road for normal driving. Everyone thinks it's underpowered but we have no problems merging or passing.

    Gotta give Subie kudos for making the Impreza sporty looking. To me it looks great. Also like the A, B, and C pillars and headliner are all black. To me all black interiors should be like that. Just classier. The boxer 4 is super weak on power. The Cross Trek I drove is just weak on acceleration.
    My problem is by the time you price one out you are very close to a base WRX. Sure it's the old model but the turbo makes it worth it.
    Glad Subie has made this sporty. But the Civic and Corolla will outsell it well.
    Plus the Civic Si is at $24775.

      AWD, well tuned suspension, etc. Priced pretty close to the civic. Not a big difference.
      As for the Impreza/WRX comparison, you have trade offs. For this thing to cost what a WRX does, you really have to sink money into the extras. Mine was stickered at $27k, and that was with the moon roof, Harmon kardon audio, and eyesight suite, among others. Plus the WRX doesn't touch this in mpg, nor does it come with a hatch. It's not that the WRX is an upgrade over the Impreza; it just serves a very different purpose.
      I definitely miss the extra 20hp my 2007 impreza gave me with the EJ25, but if you push the car a little, you'll find yourself braking less, which is fun.

AWD, comfortable, great seats, good stereo, SUNROOF, slick manual (altho "only" a 5 spd). Power is not terribly impressible, but gas mileage is...and that's what I wanted in an economy touring car. He hits the nail on the head. If you want more zip, this car isnt for you. The rest of us will be happy with it. The road isnt a racetrack, and I take no notice of all this 0-60 time bollox with every car review. Its irrelevant in day to day driving situations. Our roads have speed limits, and I had a 67 BHP Suzuki Celerio that would sit perfectly well on motorways and whizz along nicely on country roads because it had something called GEARS which you use to get the best out of the engines power. I could get nearly 60mph in SECOND, so if 152 BHP is not enough for you then you need to learn how to drive properly.

    We purchased a 2018 Impreza. We bought the base model. Had the sport had a 2.5 engine, we would have purchased one. There is not enough difference to warrant the purchase of a sport. Subaru needs to up the ante in power. The 2.5 gets very close to the same mpg. And the 2.5 would give the car another 30 horse power. We now have 60,000 miles on our hatchback Impreza with the CVT. The CVT, gets a bad rap. It is a good transmission for this car. However, this car has the wrong engine. All the competitors cars will blow this weak thing off the road.

It didn’t need turbo power just a tad more from getting run over on the freeway. I do like the design and simple interior. I tested the 19 and I was horrified with the dealer driving along with me . I thought there was a problem? Nope it just has no sporty to the sport. And I mean nothing. In terms of power it reminded me of the first generation Elantra. My goodness so bad. The dealer wanted me to try the STI? I said no I was interested in the Impreza, key word was. It does many things well, and many will be happy with it. I don’t see why they couldn’t throw in a couple of more ponies. The after market I don’t think has much to make up for its lacking power without making it obnoxious.

    Looks are nice, the platform better & interior massive improvement. The powertrain however is still lethargic, something that prevents it in my eyes from challenging the Civic or Mazda 3. I almost wished there was a ~180hp 1.6L turbo (Subaru has the FB16 turbo motor in other markets) that straddles the line between the 268hp WRX to the common 152hp base car.

    I'll be shopping for a new car in a few months, and i was really looked forward to Subaru. The Crosstrek and Impreza were the perfect size for me, but they come with such weak engines and dont offer any optional upgraded engines. Its such a shame.

      UvenDrake too large for my needs. Crosstrek is perfect size. It's comparable to rav4, crv, cx-5 and rouge. All with engines making at least 25-30 more horses. With crosstreks awd weight, they definitely need to offer an upgraded engine even if it's optional.

      I'm in the position of needing to purchase a car within the next two weeks. I test drove a few cars, including the Crosstrek. I really wanted to love it and there is a lot to like, but I was underwhelmed. I felt like the interior material quality was weak (really cheap plastics around the steering wheel). I felt that it was underpowered and the steering felt loose and imprecise. This last bit confused me because I've driven my mother's 2010 Legacy plenty and that handles significantly better. The Civic, on the other hand, completely blew me away in terms of power, material quality and handling.

    150hp is not enough, even on the base Impreza.
    I drove a 2017 Impreza for a week as a loaner and the power is inadequate for anything other than stop light to stop light city driving.
    Getting on the highway you have to floor the thing to get up to speed before the end of the on ramps and you should be prepared to camp the right lane because you can forget about passing anything.
    If they can get the same engine to put out 200hp in the BRZ then they should be able to at least give the Impreza 170-180hp.

    • @thatsreallyamoon

      In my entire time of driving a 132 hp Corolla, I've never had trouble on a ramp, passing at highway speed, or anywhere for the matter. I'm not sure what the heck you're trying to do that 150 hp isn't enough. Lol.

    I live in an area where the roads are slippery because it rains a lot. When temperatures at night hover around 32 degrees or less - the morning commute can bring fender bender encounters. The AWD Impreza sedan is for the type of buyer who wants to drive something that looks reasonably classy and to go places without experiencing too much drama. If I lived elsewhere - I would get a Civic.

    Maybe because it has AWD but all models of the Impreza are under power from the over price premium to the base I have to say Subaru did good a job making it a sportier car but Honda wins this round maybe if Subaru offer a performance packing for the Impreza like a mini Wrx Spoiler ,exhaust,cold air intake just maybe it'll be Impreza worthy

    • @jaimeprado23
      @jaimeprado23 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes Sure actually has 22 more hp if we are talking base its 6hp but then the Imprezas all have same hp just pay more for features or a Sport edition which should have that extra horsepower to compete with the 1.5T Civic which also has great mpg Subaru can make the Sacrifice less mpg for more hp which would give Subaru more sells giving Honda a real competitor on the Compact Market rather see more subies than Honda

    New Suburu's are a joke. I bought the Impreza after owning three Toyotas. This car has more glitches than all of my Toyotas combined. My key is continually stuck in the ignition, (something the dealership can't fix after spending three days trying) I have to practically break the shifter to get the key out. There are rattles galore and the CVT will drive you up a wall with its whine! It is under powered and the entertainment system just doesn't work properly at all. I turns off and on randomly and just frustrates the heck out of me.

    • @Ballacha
      @Ballacha 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Joshua Messier then why do they put in features like torque vectoring if they don't want this car to be judged accordingly? also, if you look closely, you'll find that i said i'd rather impreza didn't have this in my original comment.

    • @jmessier90
      @jmessier90 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Terry Folds maybe they figured that people would understand that this is a naturally aspirated Impreza, not a turbocharged sports car, and wouldn't judge it as a sports car. Looks like they gave the average consumer too much credit.
