TM Krishna on mistakes liberals make:"I go to temples. Progressives think you should be apologetic"

  • Celebrated Carnatic musician TM Krishna has written a new book on caste discrimination against the mostly Dalit makers of the Mridangam. His boo, 'Sebastian and Sons' explores the distance between the player and the maker of his instrument and lifts the veil of silence over many unknown facts including that the mridangam is made from 3 animal hides, including cow skin. Krishna has been a vocal activist against the CAA. He is our guest on #BehasWithBarkha

Wonderful interview, but if I may add, the motion graphics in the background in your videos are HIGHLY distracting. Please do change the format, because I want to listen to TMK talk but I'm distracted by the frustrating speed of the yellow box and when the big box reaches smaller yellow box.
I'm assuming that these sort of motion graphics with bold colours are used in 9oclock news television because they want the short span audience to stay and made to feel like they're getting a lot of flashing information. Your audience of YT is choosing to watch the whole interview also for the content... However long it is, please do justice to the graphics!

The Mrudangam is made after the cow, buffalo or Goat are dead. A ceremony is done. Only after it dies, the skin is taken to make the instrument. He is hiding this fact. I think many of carnatic musicians will agree with this.

    This interview is not gospel.
What needs to be addressed is that the mridangam making process could have changed over a period of time. May be earlier dead cows were used but later on the demand for perfection warrants cow killing just for this purpose ?

Towards the end I was happy the conversation ended. Hear TMK's podcast with Amit Verma for a far better discussion on this topic.

Mr. TMK- Yes, talking the cultural or religious language is important for liberals to communicate, love the word you said respect, small things to ponder - like your realization around how you address one of your helpers at home or not knowing how and where the mridangam is made ... How do you rationalize the jump from being a "liberal" to a "progressive" ... does it not mean the "other" side is regressive ... are you nuanced in that judgement ? Have you gone deeper into that ? You mention about the monolithic thought and dichotomy of Good and Bad ... Does that not apply to liberals and not-so-liberals ? Everything is a shade of grey isn't it ? Including Killing a cow for eating to killing a cow to make Mridangam ? The liberal mind will immediately jump to "how can that be" - no killing is evil !!! Yes it is and that's how the "culture" and "public discourse" has to be.. religiously or not .. so that there is "order" (through fear) ... Is that reality ?

I think that would show that all of this is not just a Liberal fantasy but actually walking the talk. I am not saying this Sarcastically, just pointing out that ideas are fine but living upto it is what truly matters. Visiting a Dalit colony, touching things there, coming back and cleansing yourself in a hot shower and then sitting down in your clean fine study room and writing a book on your experience will not help. Question is are we ready to bring all that we experience in a Dalit environment, into our house and live with it? What say Mr. Krishna?

First thing that struck me overall is the ego trip he was indulging himself in ..
"upper caste male arrogance, I never saw it fit to respect a 60 year old man, I never cared about Mridangam".
All the ills of his personality has been transferred to Brahmin caste and when he says that he started looking at things differently he makes it as if he sat under Bodhi tree and became a Buddha.
Once he realises that he is a product of a community and of a larger society and that has helped shape his views ( good and bad) he will come up with a balanced view and not play to the liberal and pseudo secular gallery, and he will repsected both for his music and mature world view.
On the aspect of skin used in Mridangam, it is known that different categories of the same animal is preferred by meat eating persons. Demand for cows for meat consumption is xxx times more than demand for skins for Mridangam. TMK glossed over this fact which makes one infer that skins for Mridangam is by product of meat industry.
Mani Iyer's family have refuted his anecdote about cow shown to Mani Iyer for making Mridangam. Given his background and the way he has usedMani Iyer's family for furthering his interest, I will not trust TMK.
On EVR it is better he stays out of this area as his agenda driven hypocrisy comes through easily.
In one section he complains that Mani Iyer single handedly took Mridangam playing , out from a different community which was traditionally playing it.
Compare this with his efforts to popularise Parai art. TMK complains that upper caste ignores Parai music and want upper caste to accept and learn parai music. Tomorrow if Parai music is taken over by Brahmin then he will complain. What a bundle of contradictions.
Learnt nothing new but only helped reinforce TMK's bigotry, hypocrisy and agenda driven actions.
