When they say 'the ecosystem', do they mean plants, animals and other organism or are they just talking about the carnatic world or the brahmanical hegemony? Love when we use new words to describe same old thing. A huge fan of the sisters and even now when I hear them sing, I am in awe but when they smile after their half-assed response, it's giving me president snow vibe from The Hunger Games film
Perfect answer
Agree. I mean the fact that they say the only ones criticising them are ‘placard holding activists who haven’t heard more than an hour of classical music in their whole lives’. Shows they superiority complex quite clearly. Shameful
@@nikitali5129perhaps it's because of those that actually bothered to send a letter to them about it. I don't think what they are doing is very well argued. But then again, I also don't care so much if others want to hold half assed opinions. So, despite being someone that listens to carnatic music a lot and having an opposing view on the subject, they don't know people like me exist?
Its just the stink is out in the open.
@@nikitali5129 I am not interfering your debate to protect something but genuinely to understand the naunces of raag music several hours of listening are even not sufficient. The sisters know the music and accordingly shown their generosity quoting just one hour as parameter.😊
Dr. Yesudas has popularized Carnatic Music to the masses. Even as a lay man, I can enjoy his rendering
Dr Yesudas is one of the late Sri.Chembai Vaidyanathar's most talented shishyas. A video of their joint rendition of "Kshirasaagara.." is beyond sublime when one listens to it. The Guruvar encouraging his Shishya
Only if science, music and culture spreads among all castes and communities evenly awards have value. That's why Jesudas became so popular.M S Subbulakshmi herself not a Brahmin.
He is not popularised on carnatic music he doing playback singing very well. But his carnatic music is not famous.
@@sanjayankrSanjayan it is very, very famous amidst the Carnatic masses
True! He has performed in many sabhas in Chennai and also all over India and abroad. He is equally famous in both the fields..like someone said his music reached the masses irrespective of caste..if the Singing is good it will reach the masses naturally, we don't have to take it to the masses..! If there is a sweet smelling flower, it will attract the bees even if it is far off!😁flower need not go after the bees
The interviewer deserves kudos for (1) preparing well for the interview (2) asking pointed questions (3) waiting for the respondents to answer in full without interruption.. This is a wonderful interview.
The sisters are excellent and need full support for being direct, sharp and clear in both their position and explanation. We're so grateful that they can take this stand and explain this important value based judgement.
Immature views. The ideology of a person should not define a musicians excellence. These sisters are excellent singers, but have room to grow up as humans. Your views are immature as well, sir.
These are Non resident Tamilians who sing in Telugu and call it Karnatic Music. If only people knew the history of this music and who used to sing it before it became a elite music. Shows a certain round about arrogance in their reply for direct questions. Kudos to the interviewer for asking them questions that brought out their mindset.
Her point was families should create an atmosphere and encourage children. Non-Brahmins since beginning of Dravidian politics avoided any this that is considered Brahminical, except education for they realized it is the way to move up. Tamil movies constantly portrayed then as cunning, ridiculed their culture, dress, simply anything they do. It is non-Brahmins who built a wall not other way. It is in Brahmins interest to allow this art to grow, why would they keep 98% of market out?
@@venkatrs I agree that Brahmin families are super sincere about their kids/family and there is lot rest of all tamils can learn from them. What devadasi's preserved and grew both these art forms of singing/bhariatanatiyum as government employees of the kings, is now practiced in majority by one community. This is not wrong. What is wrong is deriving some sense of superiority or ego in claiming it is because of some superior ability. Very similar to the claim that Sanskrit is superior to Tamil because it is a devabasha, without any proof of outcome. Digging more of tamil history will put to rest a lot of these stories and claims with proof in due time.
Why i feel that both their smiles looks so fake

when you cannot take on their logic, these are the things people resort to. similar to TMKs comments on MS amma.
Not sure about their smile, but your ID certainly is, may be for obvious reasons 😊
@@pradeepbharadwaj2819 thanks for the info dude, next time i will make sure to add bharadwaj at the end to look authentic..
Their smiles are indeed fake just like their praise for each other while singing during their concerts
THESE TWO SISTERS SHOULD NOT BE SINGING THUKARAM MAHARAJ JI'S ABHANGS IN MUMBAI AS WHAT HE CONVEYS THROUGH HIS MUSICAL OUTPOURINGS IS NOT VERY DIFFERENT FROM WHAT SHRI TM KRISHNA JI SAYS
👏👏👏
100%
Why not, the sisters respect different art forms and are careful saying that no one should hurt or be hurt in the process.
In one sentence madame Ranjani says "we are all doing our bit", but apparently there is no time due to the demands of making money from carnatic music and teaching it to your own families? So doing our bit is doing little to nothing it seems. Why do they not wake up in the morning to think of how to help others? Came to this interview with hope, leave feeling that the hegemony is likely to persist.
the primary duty of an artist is to practice and deliver enjoyable concerts for the listeners! By simply keeping the artform alive, they are preserving it's rich tradition and heritage for generations to come. They are also teaching many students. That is what they meant by "doing their bit". They do not need to do anything beyond that. They are not politicians or social workers who need to "do" anything beyond that to reach music to anyone! It is available for all, if they want to enjoy/learn, especially in this day and age of the internet and social media. it is job of the organizers and sabhas like the music academy to make arrangements to encourage more to listen.
The sisters sing beautifully. But their hypocrisy also shines through. They complain about others casting aspersions on them, but do not hesitate to cast aspersions, in a condescending manner, on "activists" and fans who, they are sure, have not listened to even hour of Carnatic music. You don't need any training or cultural background to appreciate good music in all its forms - folk to classical. TMK fights that condescending attitude. They question what his 10 years of activism has achieved. The world has seen what he has achieved. He has raked up the issue of caste-based discrimination, discrimination against women, the sexual harrassment cases that are not followed up in the "ecosystem", how the instrument makers have been sidelined for centuries (Sebastian and sons), the issue of free speech and shrinking space for dissent, socio-environmental issues through songs like "Porompokku," the validity and credibility of "folk" art forms... the list goes on. Periyar's social reformist credentials cannot be doubted, even if he used bad language. TMK might not be perfect (his music is close to it.. even transcends it at times), but no single artiste in the music world has done what he has done to highlight systemic injustices to date.
Well said
Well said. Raga's bit is prohibiting the webcaste of an open temple concert
@@mirnaliniasokan8185 Good! Now that he has done all that, he should focus on the injustices done to the Brahmins (as the govt refers to them on their birth certificates), many who are also financially backward, who are discriminated against through the practice of reservation quotas in the education, job, and other sectors! He should compose songs and sing at political rallies to bring these injustices to light! (like the porampOkku song). I find it quite arrogant that he thinks His carnatic music is so superior that he feels a need to 'take it' to places and cultures who may not care since it may interfere with their own genre of music. In this day and age, everyone can get an exposure to practically anything and learn about so many things on TH-cam! Talking about not having exposure is so silly. Everybody has exposure to everything (if they want to have) through social media. Through all this, he has only spread greater fear of the artform, its practices and artists through wrong interpretation. Everything and anything can be interpreted and perceived as "discrimination" by weak and insecure minds. Wake up people! Where there is a will, there is a way! if you pursue anything with passion and humility instead of blame-game, you will find a way.
No the two sisters are not only aware of the different forms of Karnatik music but also perform them in their concerts. They are only voicing their ire on unnecessary provocation. They are saying that music is being taught to anybody who is willing to be committed to learn with a sense of belongingness.
@@mgchandrakanth They were not just voicing their ire, they were pouring scorn on "uneducated" rasikas. Their saying that music is being taught to anyone committed is rhetoric, glib, for sure. The exclusion is never stated, it just happens and has been happening for a long time. TMK drew attention to it.. that was a needed provocation...
Both of you are brilliant .a well articulated thoughts of yours..you said it right its sadhana indeed.connecting to our paramatma, and artists experience that and for some moments tranfer that to the listeners too Thats their skill and takes years of dedicated practice.you have every right to put your best foot forward.Good interview and both of you cleared the air around your decision. And not to exclude the anchor ,showed such maturity and cool calm ,composed and smiling. approach .just right ,made the show taste good.
Ranjani and Gayatri have just shown they are not just musical masters - but great intellectuals who can very convincingly put forth their point of view without getting entangled in emotions. Hats off to both of them !
Nobody knows them in the south. Simply publicity stunt
😂
They are musical masters. But definitely not intellectuals. Quite arrogant and causing drama.
What is this hagemony ???? any body.Can come and sing ; No one is controlling anyone ; Brahmins they work hard on that as their life ; TMK had not attended any concerts for 9 years in the academy and got awarded ; RG question the basis of award ;
Do you mean others don't work hard? The issue is as T M Krishna rightly pointed out there has always been brahminical hegemony and many talents are being neglected just because they are non-brahmins. Of course, we are least bothered about these two morons and their comments on TMK. They say he sings songs on Periyar. So what is your problem? What contribution you have done to your society but for squating on the stage during december season? You may refuse to attend the function, of course it is your liberty., the reason for the same is highly objectionable.

Better explainanation is , 2 is the result 1. Casteist Academy has turned into non casteist. Even Indian independence is the result of protests and boycotts. A positive change must be welcomed instead of boycotting by these casteist musicians.

So many Nadaswaram artists are well respected and admired.
It's very much natural that vocalists get more recognition because they drive most concerts, not because they're Brahmins.
Hatred comes out. Brahmin’s fault? Temples should encourage the nadaswaram artists, instead of being swindled! HRCE should be closed and the management of temples should be handed over to people. Find some other thing to vent out your anger, suggest corruption!

Carnatic music will remain the same even after this incident. The only thing now visible is people are ready to blame Brahmins for all things happening around.Let mrKrishna explain what are the efforts he has taken for left out people to learn Carnatic music we will be happy and thank him
I was mesmerised when i heard the reality spoken by TM Krishna , this award or not what he has said on inequality in this art form he needs to be acknowledged. And an art form cannot be reduced to cast and religion. He stands for this so hats off to him.
He refused to sing at the Music Academy for ~10 years! Is the Academy relenting for not granting the space for TMK during those 10 years? If anyone cares about Carnatic music and the Trinity's contribution that TMK so frequently sings, Saint Thyagaraja's "Sangeetha gnanamu *bhakti* vina.." should reverberate.

Where are the other musicians ?? There are many seniors like Sudha Raghunathan, Sanjay Subramaniam etc . Are they only trying to protect their career interests and are willing to stomach insults like these?
They are beyond these confusing controversies.
Well explained separatists are always there to create problems thinking speaking about social service
Raga sisters are unique in their singing and also in their approach. Hats off to their wonderful and brilliant thoughts.May God bless this sisters.
Where is your boss..
Artists should be happy they have audience at their concerts. If you talk about Bhava and Rafika’s and all these divisions, I also like some other Voices like Sanjay Subhramanyam more than T.M.Krishna’s voice.Between Ranjani and Gayithri, I feel Ranjani has more Bhava than Gayithri. Gayithri has a high voice but not the Bhava of Ranjani. But I enjoy both their singing. Let’s get rid of the cast system and let truly gifted voices enthrall us.
Sorry to say - Ra-Ga way of speaking and Singing sounds same - well articulated !
I think people have the right to sing about whatever they want and whoever they want. It might be carnatic music or folk music. It is a free country.
At the same time, people also have the right to boycott and call for boycott of an organization that does not serve its purpose anymore.
The print as a news person , award is criterion decided by the music academy for an understanding. The claims are mr t.k.krishnas inclusion of wider communities people from different faiths , people from different work places including fishing ,and haed workers so far sich as 10 years frkm his past
Is it just me or do their false smiles actually make them look scary? When she says "eco-system" I have an uneasy feeling that she is talking about the caste system. And just a reminder, you don't need to listen to classical music to protest against social injustices that are happening in the classical music field. That is the lamest and most arrogant response to a topic of such serious concern. Nowhere do they say that they will at-least try do some soul searching or fact finding to correct flaws.
Iam rather pained to hear so many discussions are made mostly un the social media channels which all these days discuss only Politics related matters for discussion. As Ranjini rightly says here today any one comment in anything without any basic knowledge or experience on it. Carnatic is one such art date back to 19th Century. It is for the Madras Music Academy , Mr T M.Krishna to dispel the doubts of only a handful of Musicians like RaGa, N .Ravikiran,Trichur Bros, and Priya Sisters. We the public or in the true sense Rasigas, want every Musician to say something on the TMK issues and they are free to take sides based on facts. I have a genuine fear that in the coming years Carnatic music will also be divided on the basis of Musicians, and their music, some singing Mummoorthigal kirtans based on Divine nature, while some others trying with Tamil songs. Many are non committal, and they are busy with their schedule in USA and other Countries. Along this, we also witness foreign singers learn and practice Carnatic music right from the days of John B Higgins, to a current day Chinese singer Hu or Chu student of lare DKP. Iam also amazed at a Muslim morher who praise her Daughter singing AYIGIRI NANDINI,and the mother also singing AYIGIRI openly admitting it is doing something in her. There are very many ways of improving our age old Music, by enriching it with more research.
Who is sitting in judgement to verify the truth in murali's letter. The society? Murali? Or a police constable?
T M Krishna is Nephew of TTK family, founder of Academy, and so its natural that TTK family wants to award their family member whether he is eligible or not. If he was eligible, why T M Krishna did not sing in Music Academy all these years ? Why Academy did not allow him to give concert? Such questions arises to common public people. Murali should answer to it. There is something behind the screen. They are many stalwards like Nityasree etc. who are very senior and have high rank in carnatic music. Why they were not given till date? Politics in Music Academy.
The thing is reservation is not a substitute for years of perseverance, dedication, and hard work in classical art forms. Yeh agar nahee hai tho nahee ho payega re baba, sorry.
Ilaiyaraja a dalit, outclassed all the brahmins. So only opportunity matters. Music has no religion or caste or race.
@@sonar451 Your statement makes no sense. No classical singer sings ilayaraja film songs in the classical concerts. They have a massive treasure to fall back on, they were originally trained on for years.
Why would a classical singer go looking for film songs in a classical music concert- beats me. Illayaraaja values his hindu roots unlike periyar followers who call for genocide of hindus and insult hindu gods. Periyar followers should go to periyar school of music. Yesudas did due diligence and learnt classical carnatic music - he didnt go around garlanding lord rama in chappal.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion so Raga sisters as well as commenters are to theirs. But so is TM Krishna. He is proposing a different viewpoint towards Carnatic music which he believes would result in larger outreach and acceptance by masses from all walks of life. Would that be really bad. The entire point is to take away the familial and community background from the equation and instead focus on the real practice and spiritual aspects of music. One sided discussions are piling up on TH-cam whereas it would be more balanced if someone representing Krishna is also speaking live at the same time.
Who is to bell the cat? Someone has to - sometime it does happen. As, in this case.
Denigrating Hinduism and Brahmin community has been the strategy used by the 'so-called Atheists of Tamil Nadu to safeguard their interests and better their position and power.
Previously it was Karnatic song against film-song and these lot used to cry hoarse upholding film-son as the better one. Then came Super singer, SariGamaPa and other such music programmes and competitions in Television channels where the judges would say, 'This is Shadjamam, That is Madhyamam, even for a cabaret dance. So it became evident that Karnatic music is the basis of all kinds of Music down South. Unable to stomach this they have now started to say that Karnatic music is in fact taken from 'Tamil Isai. Thus they go on.
Mouthing such high-sounding terms as Equality, Reform, etc., anybody can voice all irrelevant things about this art-form.
The Tamil writers who feel dutybound to give their opinions(of course unasked) on this issue should look within and think for a moment how it would make them feel enraged if an alternate magazine is compared with a pop-magazine.
It is an open fact with proofs to substantiate that Periyar did denigrate the Brahmin community in the worst possible manner.
If Periyar had said many other positive things with reformist zeal, why can't they be highlighted and propagated by those who hail him as the harbinger of reforms in Tamil Nadu(which is at best only partly true)? Instead, it is these lot who profess themselves to be the loyalists of Periyar who use his name only for demeaning Hinduism and Brahmins.
And, mostly these lot target the middle-class and lower-middle class Brahmins while maintianing a cordial relationship with powerful and influential Brahmins who are the self-chosen champions of progessive ideas which mostly sound as those of pseudo-progressives.
Divide and Rule Policy is still very much in vogue, by the powers-that-be of Tamil Nadu, to say the least. And, it is realy nice to see that these power-centres and hatemongers are made answerable, at least once in a blue moon.
//Singing the glory of Lord Rama and also of he who garlanded him with chappals is unthinkable// said Dushyanth Sridhar which gives in a nutshell what the issue is all about.
Two excellent singers, but immature humans! Ranjani & Gayatri
mrinalini, good that you were listening to them, music is form if sadhna. It takes years and years of practice. You know why is Brahmin, it is one who does learning, tapasya. It can be anyone. Anyone from any community who works hard, spends hours and hours into learning this Carnatic music then he or she can become knowledgeable person called Brahmin. Not caste but varna. Who takes atoon. Enough of dena of attacking Brahmin. No one aha right to insult artists and music. TM krishna is vicious person and insulted hindua
The Haul mark of great ness in any art form is becoming more and modest as one scales higher in their achievements
That is missing with TMK
His assertion that Karnatik music is Brahminical is a big lie .
I don't know in Tamil Nadu but Andhras all way respected musicians like Dwaram Naidu garu ,Annavarapu among host of other great musicians in all kinds, light clasical, cine.Artists are respected irrespective of caste.Tamil nadu is unique. They rever Rogues like EVR also who is Evil personified
Slowly this poison will spread to neighbouring Andhra , Karnataka … stay aware…
Wonderful decision by the sisters! The award is a disgrace to us all.
Why disgrace? Is TMK a very bad Musician that Academy's choice is wrong? Please remember the award is for the Musician one is not for one's religious or political stand. By saying this the sisters not only show their intolerance to opinion other than theirs but prove that what TMK said is true.
@@sandhyabalachandrankartha4671funny 😂😂😂
@@sandhyabalachandrankartha4671 Sandhya, you can't remove the religion from the music. Carnatic music as called in the English vernacular is a representation of devotion that is said to have sprung from Lord Shiva himself. Somebody that actively goes out of his way to demean the religion, foster hate against a certain community and not understanding the core principles of his great art does not deserve any recognition and we cheapen awards by associating them with people like this.
@@sandhyabalachandrankartha4671 There is a story where after his performance singing a bhajan about Bhagavan Shri Krishna, someone came up to him and complimented him by saying: 'Sir, When you sang, I heard Sakshat Bhagavan Shri Krishna'. And his response was something to the effect of What nonsense are you talking about, Ive sang this song plenty of times, I've never seen any Krishna here. Clearly the man has no appreciation for the roots or origins of his great art and all of this is just shameful...
Both has strong brains 😅
most of questions they refuse to answer...
politics behind the award. Why was it announced in March itself . Just before elections. What the role of N Ram in this ? Can someone explain ? The person who had vitriolic comments about the music academy all along gleefully accepts. Only the musician can answer
Wind up this academy dominated by nastikas, which has been polluted and make your own parallel academy to maintain the sanctity of our musical and spiritual heritage.
Their speech also seemed like music to me. These artists speak chaste English and drop ornamental words while speaking. Have they also kept their art of speaking within their community? TMK supporters could allege there's Brahmin hegemony in Classical English too.
