I did my P. U. C in Vivekananda College 1969-70. During one of the alumni meetings i attended, TMK was there as an alumnus. He was busy being one of the organizers. This was around two decades ago when he was a young lad. I found him to be brilliant yet humble. I was shocked to learn about the recent unpleasant incident which i could not imagine. He and his parents were involved in charitable activities especially to the poor and the downtrodden. I feel things can be sorted out amicably by discussion. I lived in Triplicane from 1992 to 1997 when i used to see Vikku Vinayak Ram sir going out of his house in his car, many times. This discussion was enlightening and informative. 57:51

Vikku is down to earth and no ego and could cross boundaries in a very early stage, mingling with finest of musicians and teamwork. TMK also has groomed lot of talent and brought them to the forefront and on stage as well

T.M. Krishna an attempt to pin point the problem in the Carnatic system has mixed validations. Carnatic still is a patriarchal system so as any other domain. It's needs a broad discussion in general about inclusive of every caste and gender. His criticism about the system is justified but the way he attacks the system is not right. The whole Carnatic community doesn't plan to keep the system unto themselves and it just evolves organically. The question is everybody asks apart from being a sharp critic but has he done anything to bring other people into this community and adopt an all inclusive approach? Every supporter of TMK will dismiss this as an immature question and will trumpet they don't understand the basics of what TMK is attacking. Another question is why Carnatic music has to be given so much importance ? Every caste and community have their own art form. The brahmin community never criticizes or prevent anyone coming into this system and they just remain to themselves and they don't make loud noises. It's a small community of connoisseurs just enjoying and practice this art unto themselves. I don't know why other community have to feel inferior about it.

It is silly argument to say all should be given equal time on stage. Even in western music orchestra , The conductor tells who needs to play music at a time based on his composition. In carnatic music it is the singer does the conductor role. it is as simple as this. Even in drama, movie all will not get same amount of time to play . If no hero or heroine or leader based on story then there is no story to tell. it is basic common sense of art . Funny to hear famous legends talk about equal opportunity for each player like communists saying sweeper should be given same salary and time and ac room as of person as that of country president.

VIKKU is a great gadam player; no doubt; but in a 2.5hrs concert, upa pakavadyam has only a minor role to embellish the concert where the major roles are played by singer, violinist and mrudangam. hence should be happy with the minor role offered and try to do the best in that role. TMK is trying to divide the musicians on stage and put poison in the minds of the listeners on discrimination of upa pakavadyams, female artists where none exist accordong to many artists, He is also goading Vikku to speak in the miscievious direction set by TMK. hence i don't appreciate the points discussed in this interview.

But a totally disingenuous thesis, here. Certain musical instruments, not part of the the orthodoxy, do have to wait till masters emerge in it. An example is the clarinet in Western orchestra: only after Mozart wrote the famous concertos for this instrument, did it become part of the orchestra. A more famous example is the double bass, even now hardly much used. The Madras Academy was dominant only in Chennai, because it was truly urban, brought about by the British, and promoting the Brahmans for their clerks, And it controlled by certain Brahman sub castes, Chembai being not a part of the these sub-caste groups, was excluded, being of a small minority sub-caste group, visibly so, as he wore his kudumi to the front of the head for one thing and being from Kerala. Aalangudi Ramachandran, the Ghatom master also belonged to this minority sub-caste, was long discriminated, on similar grounds, although from the Tamil country proper: perhaps his real reason for wanting recognition, This internal caste politics among Brahmans was real, but it is also natural, not just here, but universal. The rivalry between the Italians and Germans is well-known, and is usually ignored, with real masters emerging in German music. But music eventually succeeds, every where. Chembai's patronage of Yesudas, a Christian, is a remarkable example and it is unclear how Chembai accomplished this living in in an exclusivist agraharam, into which Yesudas could not even enter in those times. And Yesudas himself recalls how the Chembai Swami failed in getting him to sing in Guruvayur, but not with animus and the TMK's extra-musical agenda. That life should fair is really a woke illusion; it never is--Krishna's quixotism notwithstanding. I mean, his concert for the fisherfolk of Chennai beaches, while admirable, is hardly viable as serious music. It is just exhibitionism. Otherwise, why only once? Has he ever repeated it? Can he make a living by it? More important, can he cultivate his talent and genius by singing for the fisherfolk? He needs to face his true peers for that. But all of this is just a minor storm in a tea cup. The world of art is elitist by nature and it is ruthless. And unequal.
