    I think launching pre-holiday actually makes a lot of sense. The fans who will buy the system day one no matter what won't be competing with the people who get it for the holiday. Additionally, if the system launches earlier in the year, then they'll have much more games FOR the system once the Holidays DO come.
    I also think Prime 4 will be a switch 2 launch title and I don't want to wait another year and a half after waiting so long already.

    I think the smartest deign is if the Switch 2 is to the Switch how the 3ds was to the ds. Reverse compatible and previous Gen games are still developed for a couple years after the fact. A huge selling point would be if Switch 2 could run Switch games way better. The ds was so big it took the 3ds a while to become successful, but once it did it was the biggest console in the world.

We have a lot of series that feel like we aren’t getting another major release on the system, and the budget games (still great games but smaller budget!) seem more on the rise. This is an exceptionally well-argued video regarding the future of the Switch. I appreciate how honest Arlo was about what he truly felt (per usual), while still maintaining a sense of openness.
    Frankly, back in 2022, when some people online were constantly saying that a new version of the Switch (like a "Switch Pro" or a new system entirely) should release in 2023, I still felt that it would be "too soon" for a successor (or a semi-successor), despite its increasing age. In a sense, I didn't want to feel any "FOMO" for a new console, and I felt more comfortable with the Switch being Nintendo's main focus; plus, at the time, the 9th console generation was still finding its footing.
    Now, however, considering how even more Switch games have had performance limitations/restrictions _(like Sonic Frontiers, which I _*_don't_*_ believe the current Switch was made to handle),_ I'm much more prepared for a holiday 2024 release, as I've steadily left the "too soon" crowd since the start of 2023.
    Like Arlo said very well, I believe that Holiday 2024 is a great time to release the new Switch--and personally speaking--especially since I would be fully capable of saving up for it myself (by that time). I think it would be unreasonable for Nintendo to wait any longer, and risk running over their immense success yet again.

    • @ChickenNuggetCancer
      @ChickenNuggetCancer 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      To be Honest Frontiers looks terrible. Well that’s a little harsh but it doesn’t look GREAT. The Switch version actually runs somewhat decent too like y’know it’s the Switch it ain’t gonna run flawlessly but I mean it’s a good port. It kinda looks like it’d belong on the Switch anyways with how the world and visuals are. But yeah the Switch 2 releasing late next year is great timing and could give devs enough preparation to port their games over and as well as being able to manufacture enough of them.

    You were _so_ close on the difference between Gen 8 and 9… it IS the overall performance. Graphically Gen 9 looks a little bit better, but performance and optimization wise is LEAGUES above Gen 8. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart represents that really well, as the amount of stuff happening on screen, the instantly loading pocket dimensions, and the improved enemy behavior on harder difficulties showcase the PS5’s vastly superior performance; games like Ratchet & Clank would have to make huge mechanical and spectacle compromises to run on PS4 in the BEST case scenarios, and at worst, just wouldn’t be possible on weaker hardware. Hecc, the pocket dimensions ALONE are a full (or at least, closer) realization of a stunted mechanic from A Crack in Time on the PS3.

    Nintendo would be insane to let such outdated hardware last longer than 2024. When even their first party games are struggling as much as they are, there’s no more excuses. And of course, backwards compatibility is a must. They could get away without it after the Wii U, but not this time…

It feel like we're only now getting a somewhat decent library of retro games. If they pull the plug like they did with Virtual Console and start over then it would feel like the slow drip feed was not justified in any metric. It only make sense if they were holding back because they knew this library had to last for more than one generation.

    Skipping on backward compatibility would leave so much on the table. Much easier to sell a new system when the player base already has several games that would run better, plus getting the new gen games. Go the New 3DS route.

    • @Divector8
      @Divector8 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      The Switch already does that in a way. When docked the Switch is no longer trying to maximize battery life so it increases the GPU clock speed at the cost of higher wattage.
      But if you're referring to actual hardware in the dock that would do supplemental graphics processing, I don't see that being feasible. Game engines and graphics APIs really don't like processors or RAM being connected or disconnected during gameplay. It would require a game reset at least and would ruin the seamless dock/undock feature the Switch has.

I might be in the minority on this, but I'm not sure a switch 2 being able to run 8th gen ports in late 24 is going to move the needle much. We're not seeing what the Series consoles and PS5 can do yet, because they don't want to alienate customers with older hardware too soon. Also, covid put a delay on a lot of things. By holiday 2024, I fully expect to finally start seeing developers taking full advantage those systems, and I'm not sure if a switch 2 is going to be robust enough to garner 3rd party support for future releases in 2025 and beyond.

I’ve always figured Nintendo has been holding out on 9 because they saw how well 8 deluxe was selling on switch and figured it would be better to not hinder the sales of either game. Plus, that way the new system would launch with both an awesome single player game and a highly anticipated multiplayer game. Both bases would be covered.

    One big point, which Arlo actually mentioned near the end of the video--
    It's not about what big games _are_ coming out. It's about what big games _aren't_ coming out.
    3D Mario is a HUGE one. 3D Mario games typically release about 4 or 5 years apart. And it's been 6, without _any_ sign of a new game. And yeah, sometimes games take a long time to develop... But keep in mind that the 3D Mario team (EPD 8) usually has smaller projects in-between their bigger releases. The gap between 3D World and Odyssey was only 4 years. Yet Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker was released in-between. What has EPD 8 done since Odyssey? They made some Captain Toad DLC, helped with 3D All-Stars (although I doubt they really did much there), and developed Bowser's Fury (with help from NST). So nothing super substantial, and it's been 6 years? A game is imminent. The question is, why are they waiting this long to show it? It's gotta be because they're saving it for the next system.
    I was always team Q1 2025, but I think Q4 2024 is just as likely. I'd rather have it in 2025, but that's like a difference of 4 or 5 months, at most.

  • @tomross4599

    3:16 3DS had had a spring launch as well though. I don’t think there was anything awkward about the timing of the Switch launch, but rather an effective way to avoid the “there aren’t any games” complaint the Wii U had at launch. At least in my mind, by holding back some of the Christmas 2016 releases, they turned 2017 into the most phenomenal release year ever for a Nintendo system.
    On top of that, not abandoning the Wii U any earlier (which had been pronounced dead by the press within 12 or 18 months) showed how highly Nintendo valued their most loyal customers who’d already invested hundreds into the new system. They have my undying love for supporting the Wii U for as long as they did.

    It's important to remember: The Nvidia Tegra X1 was 2 years old when the Nintendo Switch came out. It was a chip designed for Cell Phones that is now almost 9 years old. There have been a lot of new chips since then, however the Nvidia Orin NX likely makes the most sense to move to because it is binary compatible (so basically no effort porting), is 4x more powerful CPU, 10x faster GPU, is 6x more power efficient, and has all the new fun features like neural processing, ray tracing, temporal scaling and anti-aliasing, etc. As an added bonus, the X1 has never dropped below $28 / chip at volume because its 20nm process is basically dead and no one else uses at volume anymore, whereas the new Orin NX is an 8nm process that is still very common and offers $10 / chip at volume. And, as a final reminder... The Nintendo Switch codename was the NX.

      Do _not_ expect a Metroid Prime 2/3 remaster to be anywhere as intensive a conversion as MP1.
      MP1 Remastered basically required Retro Studios' full attention plus several volunteer developers to create, all while trying to develop MP4 simultaneously. They simply do not have the time or budget to make a full-fledged remake of 2 AND 3 to go between 1 and a potential 4 release as a Super Switch launch title.
      At most, expect a quick HD port of both games - just so that people can check out the rest of the original games before 4 drops.

      people are underestimating first-time gamers, new switch owners, and kids who are just getting a switch now, who may have not even been born when it first dropped, over 6 years ago now lol.
      then there's adults who are just getting into gaming. maybe they played animal crossing during covid, and this is the first zelda release for them. I remember when I first bought twilight princess like 14 years ago, I didn't realize it was like the 17th zelda game in the series. I just bought it bc it looked cool and I was just getting into gaming at the time. each game release is made to look appealing to newcomers, even more-so than than it is to fans a lot of the time.
      this type of consumer/ the newcomers make up a huge part of every consoles success and yearly sales. the hard-core gamers probably got the switch in year one or two, or have already decided long ago if it isn't for them. not everyone is gaming at the same rate, and like movies, they always consider the fact that every release, and every year, there will be new eyes on their products, and they're always making a conscious effort to sell to those people, who are likely considered much more in their marketing than the loyal, hard-core, day-oners, core of the fandom are.
      edit:
      this is also why they could prolong the switches lifespan another year easily just by lowering the price and creating bundles. maybe doing another mini marketing push. like another superbowl commercial or something.
      that said I feel like another console is coming at any moment now. considering we're at the point where most consoles have run their course. it's pretty much impossible to get a second wind that surpasses the peak, once you've peaked. like arlo said they aren't going to wait until the well is dry. no company in their right mind does that, so they're already planning ahead and they have been for a while. nintendo especially is concerned with their image and always coming off as "premium" and leaving consumers wanting more, and not letting them ever get bored with their products/ namesake. reputation is important to them.
      so the question isn't really when, it's what. they never release a console just to release a console. there's always a gimmick. I just hope it isn't AR or VR.

    Switch 2 2027 here’s why
    When Switch first came out I remember reading something where Nintendo said they wanted the switch to last at least ten years
    In 2022 furikawa said
    Switch is just in the middle of its lifecycle and the momentum going into this year is good. The Switch is ready to break a pattern of our past consoles that saw momentum weakening in their sixth year on the market and grow further.
    If this is just the middle then don’t expect any new systems until 2027 or 2028
    Again If Furukawa’s comments are taken at face value that would mean the Switch will still be on sale in 2027.
    They won’t need a switch 2 until 2027 the switch’s ten year anniversary will be a perfect time to announce a successor system
    Why is everyone in such a rush to abandon the switch DIDNT y’all criticize Nintendo for abandoning the 3ds and Wii U by shutting the eshop down
    If y’all don’t want them to keep doing that then stop pressuring them to move on

    I personally think the Switch form-factor is here to stay as long as Nintendo can improvements to the "base" portable experience. Give it a more powerful chip (While AMD would be nice, Nvidia's probably Nintendo's best option for affordability), a better resolution screen; maybe 800 or 900p, 1080 might be pushing it; more ram, and then maybe a dock that can offer boosted performance and 1440p or maybe 4k output. Pretty much what everyone has been calling for for a "Switch Pro". Nintendo's almost always going to try to throw in some secret sauce (read: fun/unfun gimmicks) to be more exciting though, so who knows?

      Calling Nvidia affordable? Tell me you’re not a PC gamer without telling me you are not a PC gamer. It’s not a coincidence the rest of the consoles go with AMD, Nintendo is using Nvidia because the Switch is a retooled Nvidia Shield, a dud Nvidia must’ve been more than happy to find a use for. Don’t like how nobody is mentioning handheld PCs like the Steam Deck leaving the Switch in the dust in terms of performance, they’re pressuring Nintendo to catch up to them. Also don’t like how Arlo keeps calling the Switch a PS3/360 equivalent, the Switch is getting Arkham Knight. It will get some downgrades but it’s not going to look as bad as its prequels.

      I think you forget that the switch and steam deck are two completely different markets. Sure, they are both handhelds, but they are so insanely different. No one has to decide between a steam deck or a switch, they play completely different games and are catered to completely different audiences

    • @protocetid
      @protocetid 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@samplautz5586 Oh but I have seen people talk about making that very same choice on PC gaming hubs. Almost every one of us is living under austerity and it limits our spending on luxury goods, there have never been so many quality games to play despite the endless doom and nostalgiaposting people on the internet have loved to do for possibly all of eternity. You're not entirely mistaken, a Nintendo console's main selling points are that it plays their exclusives and it is a safe choice for pay to play games for kids. These keep their machines alive in spite shortcomings like aging hardware or online multiplayer that is still behind the times. When you have handheld PC owners talking about how it makes the Switch look like a dinosaur and their particular Switch is under 3 layers of dust, don't you think it will affect the reputation of the Switch?
      There isn't a PC handheld that targets children, yet. The continued growth of the segment will get us there unless that growth stops, and I pray that it does not. PC is my favorite platform and I'd like for competition to prevent Nintendo from getting away with unsavory acts such as making disposable controllers and their anti consumer way of handling accounts and retro games. I want Nintendo to feel a bit more threatened, ye olde Switch is overpriced because they know they can get away with it.

      @@protocetidOur plight is different from where companies deal with Nvidia. 😂😭😡
      Remember that Nintendo and Nvidia have a contract for ARM-based SoCs that's still in place. The particular Tegra that could be used has been sighted, and has a few RAM configurations (8GB to 64GB packages). One studio that has dev kits has already voiced concerns about the RAM available for retail, so it's likely to be the 8GB variant we'd get for something around $300 total. However, I would like to see Nintendo actually take a bit of an initial loss and go with the 16GB variant, and put the price below $400 (no, $399.99 wouldn't count).

    • @protocetid
      @protocetid 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@SelecaoOfMidas Getting the impression you know more about the business and tech side of the next Switch than I do, I’m a PC gamer that doesn’t understand specs very well. Are you stating Nintendo has a contract with Nvidia that guarantees them Tegra parts without the Nvidia premium? Find it a little hard to believe but I don’t know what sorts of agreements console companies can reach with chip suppliers. Have also heard from computer aficionados Nvidia is a pain to work with, something about them screwing Apple and Macs using Radeon until they came up with their own solution. I know the PS3 had GeForce graphics too and they stuck with Radeon afterwards.
      What Nintendo is cooking up will have inter generational performance again right? Would 10GB suffice? Sixteen would be too high as a handheld is not going to be standing shoulder to shoulder with the PS5 and XSX, the XSS has ten. We can expect DLSS correct? It should bring down the amount of RAM required.

    Holiday 2024 seems a little too long of a wait. I know 3rd party devs are just getting kits recently, but Nintendo has likely had their own studios and maybe a few other long-time partners developing with it for a while now. After all, they probably want to launch the system with their own proprietary software first and fill it out with 3rd party later. Of course, it's hard to read Nintendo and they play things close to the chest to avoid leaks, so who knows? They seem to do their best to make the windows between announcement and launch fairly small, however.
    I wonder if Furukawa is a fan of Sun Tzu's "The Art of War", because I find this quote rather apt for how they operate: “Let your plans be dark and impenetrable as night, and when you move, fall like a thunderbolt."

    With a new console potentially coming out next year, it’s funny to see how everyone assumes that it will be basically an upgraded switch. And I get it, leaving the hybrid scene would be a terrible decision when it’s been such a popular console. Really what I would want is the upgraded model to have no joy con drift, joy cons with different shapes and sizes, locked 60FPS for both handheld and console, and more games from the Wii U to be ported to the new switch. Really just have the new console locked at 60 and I’d be a happy person

  • @doctorlion

    This is a good argument for why Nintendo *should* have switch 2 for holiday 2024, but that’s not enough to convince me that they will. I can’t imagine Nintendo cares enough about bringing in third parties and porting over gen 8 and boosting performance more than letting the switch ride through 2024. You make a good point about 3D Mario, and that will most likely come out on the next system, but all they need to do for that is simply wait until the system launches.
    To be fair though, I’ve been thinking that switch 2 comes in 2025, and I could see that happen any time of the year so perhaps I’m really just hung up over a few months, maybe half a year.

    • @westonmeyer3110
      @westonmeyer3110 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      2025 is too late.
      Even if Nintendo brought every 1st party IP back next year there just wouldn’t be enough Switch sales to justify waiting another year.
      2025 would only be a few years away from the PS6 and new Xbox systems and that would mean the Switch 2 would be in the same situation the Switch currently is in but in an earlier part of its life.
      Nintendo needs to close the power gap as much as possible and start out extremely strong on 3rd parties so they can build a huge install base.

    Here's my reason as to why I both want and think it will be a spring release again and not holiday and why it's smart that they wouldn't do that. it's very simple, tax season as well as making sure there are not shortages when it comes to the holidays so we can get into more people's hands there is nothing worse than not having enough for an audience that is clamoring for your thing and you don't have enough to sell that is your thing making sure that there is a plethora of available units during the height of the excitement which is around the holidays generally is where you really want to aim to have the most stock and if you launch a thing during that especially when there's not enough games or an attach rate for it it's a mistake

    Reminder that Splatoon 3 free-updates are planned until September 2024.
    And in case anyone thinks this doesn't mean anything, remember that the team is internal and Splatoon 2 started development long before the Switch was out since it was requested for the Switch as an early game.
    It would be weird to support a game when there's a new, big console out without said game on it.
    Edit: Holiday 2024 makes the most sense to me, all things considered, early 2024 would feel weird.
    Edit 2: Maybe they will pull a Breath of the Wild with Metroid Prime 4 and release it on Switch and as a launch title on the next one? Would be interesting, to say the least.

      This. Splatoon has a whole year to capitalise on its updates. Pushing out a new system when the switch is STILL selling well and while splatoon is still active is backwards. Late 2024 or early 2025, sure. But between sales and splatoon there’s no way we’re getting this system soon

    •  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Do you think Splatoon 3 will not be playable on the new Switch? No backwards compatibility? That would be insane, because Splatoon 3 will not be dead the moment the new Switch releases and most Splatoon players (me included) would like to use the new system when its out. I played Splatoon 2 even after Splatoon 3 was released, so I don't think this "Updates until September 2024" thing is any indication in my opinion.

  •  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

    I believe it is coming in the first half of 2024, because otherwise Nintendo would have to release too many new games until the release of the Switch 2 in Fall or Winter 2024. Since Nintendo usually releases a game per month, thats like 10-15 games until then (from today). I think it makes more sense to release the Switch 2 in April or May with a 3D Mario game or a new Mario Kart exclusive for Switch 2. They could maybe also release some games that are playable on both systems (cross-gen), but a good first year with many awesome games, like we had in 2017, is important! Besides, releasing the Switch 2 early in the year is also good to fix issues and produce enough Switches for the holiday. Metroid 4 is the holiday title for Switch 2. There I said it.

      It is already, very questioning why they release do 2D Mario for switch, it could’ve been at least cross-gen instead of promoting it for switch. As it doesn’t make sense for a traditional linear 2D Mario for October despite new console, I would say it’s a game for a more hardcore audience and on,y way it make senses is to have another 2D Mario for the more general audience, essentially NSMB Switch, perhaps being more like 3D world in 2D rather than wonder then they can have wonder for this gen.

    I think the rumours are a red herring. I think Nintendo and Furukawa specifically really intend to make the Switch a 10 year system, so next year we'll get another form of budget Switch, so either a Switch lite that docks or a Switch lite the size of a normal Switch that doesn't dock or something that every TH-camr will buy and say "if you've already got a Switch, you won't need this, but if you don't then this is a good jumping on point", just like they did with the new 2ds XL

    Great video (as always). I’m wondering if Metroid Prime 4 will be one of the launch titles alongside the follow-up to Odyssey. Would make dropping Metroid Dread with a surprisingly big marketing push and shadow dropping the Metroid Prime remaster make more sense to me - they’re trying to generate buzz and fans for the series. If they can get the Metroid fans back in, and grow the fanbase, it could be a good middleweight game for launch.
    I’ll feel even more right about this if they drop Metroid Prime 2 remaster some time in 2024 and it turns into a cross platform release with Switch 2
