I see a lot of people dunking on Jake, calling him carried and so and on, but I don't see anyone talking about how he got three stocked while dealing only 46%, didn't give up, adapted, and got closer each following game. I don't care what anyone says, it's the mark of a good player.
Proto played phenomenally and Jake was definitely getting very annoyed, but to his credit he seemed to be using his frustration as motivation. Got closer each game.
Jake is the LAST person who uses his anger as fuel. He usually just ends up rage quiting. He did it at LMMM when he lost in R1 Winners of R1 Pools and he against DDee
I don't feel bad for him, but yeah it looks pretty tough. Hard to tell how much was just Proto being good or Jake slacking since we're n=1 right now, but at very least this seems to require the Steve to work harder than normal (and probably invest more in counterplay)

Hopefully people get better at the matchup like proto, but these Steve kids will also unfortunately start learning fundamentals and improve too

Steve's Minecart can get destroyed by Robin's projectiles easily. If Steve does get close, Robin has his quick tilts and aerials to punish any of Steve's wiffs (his Bair immediately catches Steve jumping out of or riding the Minecart, for example). Both characters have poor ground speed and have similar melee range, but Robin can instantly go zoner whenever he wants. Even when a special has to recharge, he can easily play keep-away against Steve. This forces Steve to close the gap quickly which pressures them to use Minecart, a move Robin can destroy with his aerials. Robin can also easily juggle Steve and kill him in the process since his Levan aerials are stronger than any of Steve's. Robin's Levan Up air powers through Steve's Down air and can hit Steve if he's still on it, too (I killed a Steve that way and won). Add on to the fact that Robin's Nair, Dair, Neutral special, and Up special destroy Steve offstage, Robin pretty much has this one. Robin isn't easy to combo as much as other characters, either. Only issue is that you need to play the MU rather conservatively and not spam your specials to death and avoid the recharge for as long as possible. I don't Robin absolutely destroys Steve but he definitely has a slight upper hand.

Then they have a great juggling game and Steve HATES that since he's so floaty. Baiting out Dair and other burst options then punishing isn't too difficult with Lucina and Marth as well. If Steve lands a combo starter, Lucina & Marth can escape them easier since they aren't too heavy, themselves. Speaking from personal experience. I didn't just study the MU but I also observed other games and played against many good Steve players. Marth & Lucina may actually be a good counterpick. Min Min is of course a better counterpick so why wouldn't Proto go Min Min? Even if he went Lucina I bet he'd win in a dominant fashion. His Lucina is the best one after all.

Jake did better in this matchup when he was running in and not camping. IMO this matchup isn't a HARD loss for Steve if you're willing to approach in the first place. I do understand why he would camp, maybe he didn't feel confident that he could approach effectively enough with the clear matchup inexperience and Steve's overall low speed. But if you don't think hard about it and just start walking up and shielding the arms then the matchup feels a bit better in the long run rather than just delaying the inevitable by wasting blocks trying to score for a diamond or two. GGs to Proto and Jake and I hope Jake gets better at this matchup someday.
No it’s still bad for Steve even if he heaven forbid has to approach when he doesn’t have Diamond. Him approaching still puts him at risk at eating Min Min hits from across staging due to his slow mobility without going for cheeky sliding stuff. Also he needs to mine eventually or he is screwed. Plenty of moments where he was running dry on mats. Also it’s not like Min Min is helpless up close either. Proto literally down smashed him up close.
That's the Jake staple. Pay attention to his player cam whenever he plays. Sometimes it's much worse than other sets, but he's a very emotional player.

Jake did better in this matchup when he was running in and not camping. IMO this matchup isn't a HARD loss for Steve if you're willing to approach in the first place. I do understand why he would camp, maybe he didn't feel confident that he could approach effectively enough with the clear matchup inexperience and Steve's overall low speed. But if you don't think hard about it and just start walking up and shielding the arms then the matchup feels a bit better in the long run rather than just delaying the inevitable by wasting blocks trying to score for a diamond or two. GGs to Proto and Jake and I hope Jake gets better at this matchup someday.
No it’s still bad for Steve even if he heaven forbid has to approach when he doesn’t have Diamond.
Him approaching still puts him at risk at eating Min Min hits from across staging due to his slow mobility without going for cheeky sliding stuff. Also he needs to mine eventually or he is screwed. Plenty of moments where he was running dry on mats.
Also it’s not like Min Min is helpless up close either. Proto literally down smashed him up close.

That's the Jake staple. Pay attention to his player cam whenever he plays. Sometimes it's much worse than other sets, but he's a very emotional player.

Well Jake is definitely the one of many Steve players carried by the character. Never even heard of him before and he didn’t even have any confidence picking a different character despite this being one of the few horrible Steve MUs

Was crowned the best Steve back in online 2021 so you should at least know him if you were watching postquarantine smash majors in 2021. I am not a Steve fan and I dont care about the Steve players but I gotta say even back when Jake first started in InfinityCon, dude doesnt even camp. Right now, I def agree that Jake is carried by Steve. Yonni and acola are fine because Yonni is a Steve tech labber while acola uses lots of techs like NIL (Null Impact Landing). To see Jake go down the toxic camping path was a shame, thinking he would actually resort to campy playstyle tho
