Seeing as Japan has been dominating NA majors for the last 2 months, a PG Stats video that really dives into the country and breaks down its top talent would be very cool. Whether it be one large video on the country, or multiple videos covering different areas like Kanto, Kansai, etc. It would be good for those in NA who understandably dont follow Japan that closely.
Japan players are ranked unfairly low and the best way to solve that is to give more value to JP tournaments like officially considering Maesumas supermajors and giving kagaribis higher value.
One under discussed story about Double Down would be Tea. His performance at Ult Summit 4 is looking more and more like bad bracket luck combined with a out of line underperformance from him. Ever since Summer of Smash started, Tea won a NA major and his lowest placing overall has been third. Even got a lot of good wins like Dabuz, Kola, Shuton, Ken, etc. Really seems like his main issues now are Leo/Sparg0 and that Japan is better than NA vs Pacman for obvious reasons. Someone get Tea and Maister sponsors already lol.
For some reason it's very rare for Japanese players to get sponsors. He deserved one years ago, let alone now. Sometimes NA orgs pic up out of region players, hopefully someone picks him up soon.
PGstats could do a deep dive into Japan's online ladder system, which is brewing a lot of good talent like hero, Acola, yoshidora. It also is a great platform to study the diverse character list of this game. I truly believe NA is struggling because they can't play niche characters like Steve and min min, but Japan can cause they have the ladder system.
Is Steve niche anymore tho? In America, there's Jake, Yonni and Onin (who won GOML 2022). Obviously Acola isn't always in North America, but that's still 3 Steve mains who tend to place well.

I'm so happy and proud to be apart of Double Down this year. I didn't make it very far in bracket, but it was still the most fun I've ever had at a Smash related event. Next year, I'll be more prepared for the insane competition ^_^
Why doesn't PGStats ever talk about Tea? Probably the hypest set of the tournament in winners semis vs Leo, finished 3rd beating everyone except his bracket demon, no coverage on his win at Crown 2 and very little is said about his second place finish at BOBC4. Literally 3rd best results of Japan this summer after Acola and Proto who each participated in 1 tournament that they won.
Tea 3-0d Kola, Sonix, Cosmos and Goblin. 3-1d Dabuz. Only losing Leo. He had the most dominant performance easily. I feel like proto got lucky he didn’t run into tea.

While Joker and Pythra are hard to fight, out of Leo's characters R.O.B. probably had the best matchup against Min Min. The gyro holds down the stage well and the gyro into side B combos can be lethal if Min Min is too far off stage.

The probably mean it isn't an Ultimate major in scale. Just because it's Platinum doesn't mean it's a major, Ultra Hard wasn't and they are gave Platinum to a variety of regions at the start of the year without knowing who was attending ahead of time.

Regarding this tournament I'm glad it happened because it proved that Steve can be beat. Proto beat Jake's Steve with Min Min, then Kola beat Jake's Steve with Cloud. As a side note, Onin's Steve lost to Ned's Sephiroth at the Warpzone tournament. People have no argument about Steve dominating the meta at this point. There's clearly counterplay but as seen, only a small amount of pros actually took the time to study the MU. What's sad is that after all of the Steve rage, NOBODY is talking about this. Like... nobody.
Honestly I think Tea just killed Leo’s confidence with Joker. Lol jk but in all seriousness we did not see Joker at all after that match. If leo’s more confident with Rob than with Joker that has to say something
It's not about confidence, he just was too tired to play Joker at the highest level. If he wasn't confident on his Joker he wouldn't have locked himself in that character against 8 stocks of 3 of japan's best players. And he was still able to take 5 of those stocks, losing to Tea's Kazuya afterwards sholdn't have taken away any confidence from him.
Min Min has no place in a game like Smash Ultimate. Been saying it since day one. Those arms are absurd for this game. She should never have been added to it. We could have had Fulgore, Leon Kennedy or a ton of other cool characters instead of this game breaking piece of green and orange garbage. Nerf Min Min. Nerf Kazuya. Nerf Steve.
