This is kind of a Part 1 of this cold camp. The conditions were stunning so I shot a lot of footage of the walk up, several timelapses and general scenery. So I've a second video out next Sunday as a more traditional wild camp video.
Thanks Kenneth. It's a great tent. Inner is a bit of a faff, but can't argue with the overall tent in bad weather. Thanks, I'm going to try and repair it myself in time with a new zip...
This is my fav to date 👏👏 what a trooper! My fav bits, 1. A possible Jack Sparrow moment .... Where is the rum 😂 2. Older and colder 😂 3. I don't know what to do now 😂 the universe however rewarded you with the most spectacular sunrise 🌄 bravo!
Thanks! The sunrise was just incredible. In Sunday I'll be uploading a second video, focusing on the scenery and with a lot more of the sunrise. The evening light was also brilliant so I've got a lot of footage and it would have made one video way too long! So next time it's way more Beacons and way less of me lying in a tent!
Lol awesome video Kev that wind wow, 21 tents holy crap lol that morning sun rise was stunning but I reckon I could of slept for 7 hours hahaha. 🤘🤘🏴🏴🏴
Great video. Older, colder, bolder !!! For a higher rating sleep mat system two r3 cheap mats or sliver thermal mat. One of those foldable an egg box things. And of course bag in bag option.
A silver thermal doesn't add much weight, but a bit of bulk. The one thing the OEX Backpack doesn't have is bottom straps, which would be useful for something like that. Thanks for the kind words, appreciate it James.
Good video kev, always like your videos cause you probably reflect about 70% of us who can’t afford £400 tent, £200 sleeping bag and so on (not that theirs anything wrong with that) keep up the good work pal
I felt for you, watching this vid! It actually made me sad when your sleeping bag zip broke ☹️ Fair play for testing budget gear in those temperatures though. Brave stuff! James.
Cheers James. It was the relentless wind, just seemed to cut straight through the tent and the draft on the sleeping bag was hard to shake off. And the noise... And the zip breaking twice! The sunrise was spectacular and next video will hopefully show that a bit more. Conditions all round were stunning for light and views.
The beauty of the spacepacker is the design pushes the tent down onto the ground in strong winds and at least one door will always be in the Leigh of the wind. Used to cook inside too by dropping the inner and rolling it out of the way.
Great job Kev! You’ve definitely proved you can do it without spending hundreds and hundreds. Like that you also didn’t go cheap on the sleeping gear and then spend loads on clothes to then keep warm. Great that you kept everything low cost on this one to show money shouldn’t hold anyone back. 😊
Cheers Yasmin. If there is one thing I've got a lot of it's cheap used gear! I should have worn my cheaper, but warmer, trousers and I think I'd have had warmer legs then.
Cheers Stu. I've saved the rest of the timelapses and scenes for the next video. The light and conditions were just stunning all morning - and the evening walk up.
Kev, that cold can get right into your bones. Besides a hot water bottle, you can use food to help with that. Tinned Mackerel in Oil (not water) with some good oat cakes and a hot drink (tea, coffee, milk, hot chocolate, broth etc). The hot drink wont warm you to drink it ;) but it will help keep the hands nice and warm while you do. But a mix of oil and protein with a slow food like oats go a long way to help with the cold. Looking forward to part 2 cheers 🫖
Thanks. I did wonder about whether to take a stove for some hot food / drink but I didn't fancy carrying any extra weight! I did eat a flapjack which is kind of oaty...
@@TheWalkingKev HAHAHA kinda :D I know you don't do dinner out when you are on a hike or overnight normally. Cold weather becomes a time you need to make it part of your night, your metabolism is a heat source and keeping it going in cold weather becomes very important. Weight is a consideration, for sure, part of the challenge. Hey, are you going to do a "repair" vid on that zipper?
@@keeperofthegood I might do. I need to buy a new zipper and some little metal bits. I'll have to measure it to try and get the right size one. Amazon has loads of kits, but they don't look great quality...
Weirdly I had earplugs in my bag, I just didn't put them in because I forgot about them! Pemmican sounds interesting, I will have a nose at doing that.
@@Jqteadventures1659 I've got a second video up next Sunday of this camp, focuses on the walk up, the amazing views and some stunning Timelapses. It was breathtaking up there.
@@Jqteadventures1659 Yeah, we really are. I loved exploring all the Valleys and the Beacons offer something a little different. The steep start to this walk was a chore, but once done you're just enjoying amazing views and gentle walking. You can do nice loops largely on the flat which is helpful for when you've got camping gear on your back.
@@TheWalkingKev Yeah, charity shops are definitely hit and miss. I thought of an idea though. You could put out a shout to your audience to donate some of their decent unwanted gear to you and you keep and test the kit. You could even set up a P.O.box (for privacy) for a month or so for viewers to send their stuff in. I've got a few bits of kit that i dont need anymore.
Selling tents eh! There's room in my house for some more. This was a great watch. My last camp was absolutely freezing and I only have the OEX Traverse sim. I was hoping the mat you used would be good, hard to tell when the zip broke on the sleeping bag and I don't normally camp on snow 🤷
I think the groundsheet on the tent wasn't the best. Definite moisture underneath the mat in the morning. Could have been condensation, could have been snow melt creeping through. I'll keep you posted when I start selling some!
Looked a chilly experience Kev but good on you for seeing the experiment out. Shame about the zip but the bag was a bargain so maybe have a new zip sewn in. Would a bivi bag be worthwhile? Regards Keith
@@TheWalkingKev For cheap just a survival bag, for expensive ex-army Goretex! For the very cold weather it gives you an extra layer which is a boon if your zip breaks.

Cheers Al. The video next Sunday will be the scenic version of this camp, properly showing the walk up. I parked past the reservoir and took a steep and sharp 900ft ascent up to the ridgeway and followed it around to Cairn Pica, just over 3 miles. My pack was 15.8kg and it felt it on the way up. I'm certainly not mountain fit at the moment. Stunning conditions and hoping next video does the sunrise justice!
@@TheWalkingKev Sounds like you went up onto Allt Lwyd, that way is nearly 200oft of ascent by the time you get to Pica Cairn - it's the way I came down. Again, well done, it's an exposed spot for sure so any wind was going to hit you one way or another.
The boots were expensive, but they'll last me the rest of my life. I rarely spend that kind of money on hiking gear, but they're a specialist piece of kit for use a couple of times a year.
