When this guy says he's going to make some dinner I assumed he was going to pull out a freeze-dried ration and boil some water on his gas cylinder stove. You know, quick and easy. But no, he starts chopping fresh veggies and browning 1/2 pound of beef. But that's not all, he whacks out a Trangia alcohol burner in those gale-force winds, and then proceeds to lit it with a match, just to make himself a proper meal. That's my new definition of dedication. Never again will I complain about my camp food.
😂👍 a dehydrated meal is definitely much more convenient but part of the fun of coming out for an overnight camp is cooking myself a nice meal. I just enjoy cooking 👍. Really appreciate you taking the time to comment. ATB
@@GoingSoloOutdoors I was very impressed with the meal! I don't do that at home - even on Valentines! ha ha Also, the cooking kit you are using! Great idea! What's the little pan/frying pan set you have - great idea - i'm using an alcohol stove but with a BCB crusader mug at the moment and packing a separate frying pan! Your setup way better
@@GoingSoloOutdoors Marvellous - thankyou for that quick reply - looking on google now! I have a speedster stove alcohol tin thingy - like a vaseline tin with carbon fibre wool in - same size as a triangia - so impressed by your setup and especially the cooking! You have inspired me a bit there! I'm normally boiling water and having boil in the bag stuff! Thankyou
Definitely nothing glamorous about camping in these conditions, but I’m really glad you still enjoyed watching video. Thanks for the continued support. ATB
Man some of these comments are awful. This video was awesome man, keep having fun and camping and don’t listen to these disrespectful hooligans commenting from the comfort of their recliners and blankets.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video. That’s interesting you say that about the comments because I don’t actually get to see many of the aweful comments. I only see and respond to the comments that are sent directly to me or if I’m tagged in the reply. Otherwise they don’t even show up in my TH-cam studio comments section 👍. Although, I’m not really bothered by stranger comments. I taught biology and chemistry to high school students for over a decade. Hormonal teenagers can say far worse things than internet couch experts 😂. Besides it only shows as engagement with the algorithm so it’s great for a videos performance 👍. I really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. Hope you have a nice weekend!

Your positive attitude throughout this video is truly inspiring......when im out in those conditions, ill forever think of you in this vid, and it'll make me smile, and stop me moaning.😊
😀👍 Even in less than desirable weather it’s still great to get out and immerse yourself in environments like this. Such a pretty place. Although I’m really hoping to see a nice sunset on my next camp! Appreciate the comment. Hope you have a nice weekend!
Pitching up with approximately £5K of camping equipment helps a person present a positive attitude. As does being paid for the ordeal. I subscribe to TH-cam Premium so I don't see ads, but I wonder how many he had you sit through.
@@michaelc3977 😂 I only have the one Ad before the video starts because TH-cam makes me. I dont care to make money off anyone who watches. This is just a hobby of mine and my family is the most important thing. That’s why I usually only make one video a month, I don’t include affiliated links, I don’t ask anyone to buy me a coffee 😂, and I don’t have any of those super chats or whatever turned on. I do this because I love it. I drive an old car and I probably will until the wheels fall off, I still wear clothing I’ve had for 15 years, I don’t waste money on nonsense other than travel with my family and camping gear 😅 (because I have an addiction to gear) and it’s what I love to do. Really appreciate you watching but no need to sound so jaded and imply that my videos are here just to make money or that I’m happy or only positive because I know how to save money and buy an good gear 👍
@@michaelc3977😂👍 I think your estimate is a bit high man. I spent $850 on this tent (by far the most expensive item) so not sure where the rest of that estimate is coming from. Again appreciate you taking the time to comment. Enjoy your time outdoors 👍. ATB
This was probably one of the best videos of camping with rain I saw so far, because is REAL and with the original sound of the places. I get frustrated some times of fake titles with fake rain. Thank you for the video from Argentina !! 🇦🇷💙
Glad you enjoyed it! Definitely no the best conditions to be out for a hike and a camp but I still enjoyed myself. Especially once I got into the tent, put some dry clothing on and just listened to the wind and the rain 👍. Appreciate you taking the time to comment.

What a guy! The sub-titles on TH-cam interpreted the sound of the wind as "Applause" and you deserved all of it! Plus you cooked proper food, not just some dehydrated gunk. Outstanding. Thank you.

Definitely tough conditions but it makes you appreciate the nice sunny camps 👍. Always amazes me how with all of our modern man made materials. Wool is still one of the best in conditions like this. Appreciate the comment!
That’s really funny you mentioned that! I had a moment while on this hike when I was actually thinking about ancient travelers of these lands making these journeys without the kind of equipment I use. About the only thing I came up with that was similar was that we both had wool. Must have taken a lot of grit. Really appreciate the comment!
And now imagine those Romans waking up, only to find they had to skip their morning coffee. Absolutely brutal indeed. I think that was the point where they decided to build a wall.
The most incredible camping/hiking video I've ever watched. I am in total awe of the way you handled yourself throughout this experience. I would have been cursing my head off. Definitely not ideal weather for camp. But once in the tent, it’s quite cozy getting to listen to the rain and have a hot meal 👍😀. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment!
I always really admire your camp cooking skills, it’s inspiring to see really good food cooked with all the compromises that camping out of a backpack in the wilderness and filming and in those kind of difficult conditions bring - damn impressive.
It’s not always easy but preparing a nice fresh warm meal really helps to lift your spirits. Especially in conditions like these. Really appreciate the comment! Hope you have a nice weekend 😀
Omg, that was brutal ! A wild camp in the true sense of the phrase. Hats of to you for enduring those conditions and battling on to make the most of what you could salvage from the wind and rain. It sure was a good testament to how your Nammatj 2 can withstand whatever nature can throw at it. I almost feel guilty watching you endure those conditions as I sit here viewing from a stifling 40 C Malaysia where it's too bloody hot to go out at the moment. Take care and stay safe buddy.ATVB 🇲🇾

I got to camp this year in the same conditions as you for 2 nights, first night the wind was extremely strong and the second night the rain was like I've never seen, spraying us in the tent, but looking back I would do it again, it was the most memorable camping experience I have and I saw another kind of beauty of the mountain.
I agree. It’s nice to have a camp like this every once in a while. It can even be quite cosy listening to the rain and wind from inside the tent. It also really makes you appreciate the days of nice weather a bit more as well. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. All the best.

you're an inspiration. not necessarily for your specific actions in this video, but bc when it got really bad, you just kept going with such a positive attitude, and you made it through to the other side. its a nice metaphor. also, you make incredible meals and i am absolutely using your recipes as inspiration for dinner. if you can make something so delicious in the middle of a storm in the mountains, i can make it at home in my kitchen. all in all, love the video! thank you for sharing your adventures! next weekend is my first time camping in a few years and i'm so excited!

Great stuff mate. Arduous conditions requiring resilience to continue on. The Nammatj performed well - concerned the guy tensioners slipped....I'm going to take the plunge on this tent. There are a tonne of Hilleberg Haters out there (for no reason I can discern), but they're the best shelters out there - as shown in this video. I always enjoy your uploads mate. ATB, Chris
Count me as a Hilleberg Lover - In March 2020 I bought the Enan that has the same 70D floor as the Akto as of February 2020. Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada U.S.A.
It’s a fantastic tent! I may have made a typo in the video if I said it was the guy tensioners. It wasn’t the guy tensioners it was the fly tensioners at the base of the vestibule that were slipping. This has never happed to me before but it definitely wasn’t ideal. I was able to stop the slipping with a single overhand knot in the ribbon material but it was a bit annoying. It may have been because it was so saturated by the rain. Not sure. Really appreciate the comment Chris. ATB
I take my hat off to you, that looked tough. Good job your tent is top class, and wool is amazing isn’t it. You still managed to cook a proper meal too 😅. Thanks for sharing. Serk

Yes it makes you really appreciate diving straight into bed when you get home. There’s no better feeling. I’ve camped out for weeks on end with similar weather. When you know you’ve got everything well prepared and the tent is strong enough to withstand almost any weather, it makes you feel so cosy and relaxed when you’re in it. I go to sleep every night with the sound of rain on TH-cam, but the real thing is soo much better. Especially rain drops on a tent!

@@greenpanda7121I have had it for around a year and a half. I find I use each of my Hillebergs for different types of camps but one that I really have been enjoying a lot is the Unna. It’s a simple design but it’s also pretty spacious for one person.
@@GoingSoloOutdoors cool thanks for the input. I'm not an Unna fan due to lack of vestibule/unclipping to gain vestibule, but I do enjoy its simplicity. I've found the Nammatj to be one of their very best all rounders, only my opinion of course.
@@greenpanda7121 I would agree with that. For its weight, strength and space inside. The Nammatj is pretty hard to beat. The Unna is nowhere near capable of handling the same kind of winds that the Nammatj can. I just sometimes prefer having a freestanding tent. 🤣 and I am a bit addicted to using different tents nearly every camp
Sometimes it’s nice to have these challenging camps and let the weather determine how things go. Mother Nature can be brutal and she is definitely in charge. Really appreciate the comment! ATB
It’s a great feeling being secure inside the tent when it’s lashing down with rain and wind outside. Nothing weird about that 👍. Appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment!
Not weird at all! It triggers a part of us that we've had for thousands of years. One that despite the relatively short time we've lived with the comforts of today, will be there for many years to come. The need for food, water and shelter is obviously essential for life. When we see a warm, dry and comfortable shelter in severe weather, it's almost impossible not to get a cozy feeling. It's primal and practically involuntary, and I'm completely fine with my caveman instinct showing itself in these situations! 😂
There were worse things which could have gone wrong, you definitely have brass balls to go through all of that. Thank you for taking the time to show us.
Definitely not ideal conditions but as long as I take my time and think things through, and I don’t make a silly mistake, usually I can still have an enjoyable camp in this kind of weather. Felt great to finally get inside the tent and get on some dry/warm clothing on! Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment! ATB
Hi, from Montréal, we went camping in nova scotia one time it was so windy and non stop,it was giving me a real headache To the point that we packed up,and looked for another place. Camping in windy conditions can definitely be a challenge. A bit easier when you only have to worry about yourself. Camping in a group definitely creates its own challenges. Unfortunately it’s windy like this quite often here in England. Earplugs definitely help when trying to get some sleep though. So sorry for your loss. Wishing you all the best.
Best part of conditions like that in the Lakes is you have the place to yourself! You know it`s windy when the water is being blown out of the streams! Miss those days now that I live in Western Australia, but we have deserts, and that is a whole new ball game! Stay safe mate.

This video is pretty amazing. The fact that you were able to film at all is worthy of major props. You captured the severity of the weather outside and in your tent so well that I felt chilly just watching. Your narrative throughout is appreciated as it fully confirms how you're feeling, what your game plan is, and warns that this type of camping is not for the unexperienced. Well done!!

Camping videos are always relaxing but there's something extra satisfying about how you faced those conditions, solved all the dampness and discomfort, and made a cosy pad out of nothing more than some material and pegged out bits of string. Amazing
These were definitely not ideal conditions for a hike and a camp but once inside the tent it was a very cozy evening. This tent is made for conditions worse than this so it's tougher than it looks 👍. Appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment! ATB
Question - your meals all look delicious. But why don’t you do the prep (cutting spring onions, slicing garlic, etc ) at home, before you set out? It would save some time (and waste) once you start to cook?
That’s a great question. Typically I bag all my ingredients a day or two before a camp. The morning of the camp I take it out of the fridge drop my kids off at school and have typically a 4.5hr drive then a few hours to hike. Most of the time if I were to cut certain ingredients ahead of time and bag them, they either loose their moisture or get slimy and mushy. And sometimes my plans also change completely and all the ingredients can remain fresher for a few days longer until I can actually get out for the camp because they are uncut. I want to have a fresh meal like I would make it at home while I’m out so I don’t mind the chopping at camp. I enjoy the entire cooking experience 👍. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. ATB
@@GoingSoloOutdoors from someone that has precut veggies before a camp, which I do A LOT, I totally agree!!! I now cut on site for the same reason. Freshness.

I once walked over grizedale tarn next to dolly wagon pike from patterdale and over to grassmere and it looked a little bit like what you encountered. The Nammatj has definitely become by go to tent when the weather isn’t great. Spacious, a good vestibule for cooking, and it can take a beating in the wind 👍
Tenacity backed up with a positive mental attitude in spades. Knowing that you have top class kit with you certainly helps you psychologically when you encounter perilous conditions like you experienced in the wettest area of the UK . Sone good tips in the vid and the importance of having tertiary back up with the Garmin In Reach. It has definitely prompted me to make a purchase including an emergency bothy shelter when I'm up on the high fells with my small group of fellow hikers. Just another great video, highlighting the Lake District in its characteristic weather patterns which can turn nasty and dangerous in the blink of an eye. I also have to comment again on your culinary skills, simply amazing. Take care and ATB. Michael.😊👊👍
You’re absolutely right about the psychological benefit of having kit with me that I know I can trust. It definitely helps to maintain my focus on other aspects of the camp 👍. Definitely recommend carrying some kind of emergency device. Doesn’t necessarily have to be a Garmin as there are many more options available now that were not available when I purchased mine. But I have been happy with its extra functionality 👍. Really appreciate the comments Michael! All the best!
believe me all you need is good food of 2-3days and such weather, location and camp and nothing could be peaceful and relaxing to stay 2-3 days alone and relaxing in camp, how good would it be felt listening rain sound over camp while sleeping........😴🥶
Having a nice warm meal once you get in the tent is very satisfying. The sound of the rain definitely adds to the ambiance 👍😀. I wish I was able to go on more multi day trips but I often only have enough time to stay for one night. Appreciate the comment!
Dope video!! That’s crazy how calm you are while it’s complete madness outside the tent, all whileeee the tent looked like it was getting hit by a tornado from the inside
Glad you liked the video. Unfortunately, these conditions are actually quite common here. I usually try to avoid days like this, but it’s a 4 1/2 hour drive to get here so if I arrive and it’s raining more than expected, I just have to deal with it. Not ideal conditions but it definitely makes you appreciate the nice days 👍. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. Hope you enjoy your weekend. ATB
I admire your positive attitude in the face of truly adverse conditions. Your tent took quite a pounding from the looks of things -- I am happy that your excursions out of it to readjust its lines and stakes were not prompted by a substantial collapse of the tent itself. Your contemplative time to prepare your meal was a nice contrast to the extreme conditions in which you found yourself. I very much enjoyed watching this!
Glad you enjoyed it! When I was initially setting up the tent, many of this pegs were hard to get into the ground because it was very rocky. My priority at that time was to just get the tent up and secure enough pegs that I would have time to get changed into some dry warm clothing. I knew I would have to go back out at some point to readjust and better anchor a few of the pegs with rocks. It was nice I was able to relax and make myself a nice meal in the meantime before the winds picked up even more. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. Hope you have a nice week.
Great idea!
@@GoingSoloOutdoors But you are out braving the elements here with over £5K of top of the line equipment. 'Glamping', if you will?
@@michaelc3977😂👍 I think your estimate is a bit high man. I spent $850 on this tent (by far the most expensive item) so not sure where the rest of that estimate is coming from. This was probably one of the best videos of camping with rain I saw so far, because is REAL and with the original sound of the places. I get frustrated some times of fake titles with fake rain.

It’s a fantastic tent! I may have made a typo in the video if I said it was the guy tensioners. It wasn’t the guy tensioners it was the fly tensioners at the base of the vestibule that were slipping.
No not weird at all. This female loves it too.
Yeah I'm the same even now and I haven't been in a tent with friends for 50 years
Not weird at all!

Unfortunately it’s windy like this quite often here in England. Earplugs definitely help when trying to get some sleep though. So sorry for your loss. Wishing you all the best.
Sorry to hear, condolences
Best part of conditions like that in the Lakes is you have the place to yourself! You know it`s windy when the water is being blown out of the streams! Miss those days now that I live in Western Australia, but we have deserts, and that is a whole new ball game! Stay safe mate.
Very true. Nice to not running into any other hikers. There is definitely a lot of beauty to be found in a desert as well 👍😀. Appreciate you taking the time to comment! ATB
Love watching . I can’t explain it but this helps to to relax
Glad you enjoyed it 👍. Appreciate you taking the time to comment!
Well done!!
Really appreciate this comment. Wasn’t the easiest trip to capture but it’s nice to have a full video record of my entire trip. Even when the weather is less than ideal. Happy to hear you enjoyed watching it! ATB
ATB
@@GoingSoloOutdoorsGood Question & interesting answer.
Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada U.S.A.
@@GoingSoloOutdoors from someone that has precut veggies before a camp, which I do A LOT, I totally agree!!! I now cut on site for the same reason. Freshness.
As a North American who has to think about squirrels, chipmunks, marmots, pikas, skunks, racoons, porcupines, bears (black and occasionally grizzly) and lord knows what else, I have to say that I'm a little jealous of you cooking such an excellent meal in your vestibule!
😂👍 I definitely don’t miss hanging a bear bag or cooking under a tarp away from my tent. Especially in weather like this. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. ATB
Honestly, your accounting of this trip is inspiring- conditions don't always have to be sunshine and rainbows to have a meaningful, "good" time. Trusting yourself and your gear makes all the difference. Thanks for sharing! @@GoingSoloOutdoors
Gruesome! 😳🙈🤣 Love that you can cook a gourmet meal in that kind of weather though 🤣🤣 I reckon that could qualify for us calling you a Brit now! 🤣🤣🤣🌧💨
😂 having a nice warm meal definitely lifts the spirits. Well… until you have to stop eating to go out into the cold rain and check the guy lines. Hope you have a great weekend!
I just found your channel and man I’m glad I did. Watching this video really made me wanna go try these experiences. Having to find a spot in the middle of this bad weather, set up a tent and cook dinner after all that, must be a really rewarding experience!
Welcome to the channel! These trips are definitely a bit of a reset button for me. The challenging trips are rewarding in the end. It’s never ideal to camp in conditions like this but it makes you appreciate the sunny hikes and sunsets from outside of the tent a bit more. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. All the best 👍
Brings back some great and some horrible memories of camping in the lakes and the Yorkshire dales. Long periods dozing in a tent whilst the wind and rain whip around you. Marvellous.
It can sometimes be very relaxing when it’s not too crazy out. Always love the sound of rain on the tent! Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. All the best.
That's better than I ever cook at home.
It was nice to have a tasty warm meal after that hike 👍
school boy error not having a change of clothing in a drybag, but fair play for toughening it out ,the food looked amazing 👌
Thanks! Bit of a bummer but it was only my long johns I was missing. I had a long sleeve shirt, puffy and socks in a dry bag so I was plenty comfortable 👍. I could have kept my trousers on and they would have dryed by morning but I went the more immediately comfortable route. Definitely want leave them behind again though. Really appreciate you taking the time to comment! ATB
@@GoingSoloOutdoors Why are your pants not waterproof?
@@rhymeswithteeth they are 👍. I had a pair of waterproof trousers over my normal hiking pants. The extended heavy rains soaked through both my waterproof jacket and trousers though
Whatever are waterproof stuff, in rain like that every get wet, full merino is amazing for that because when u will use the same wet close the day after u will feel still ok and warm after, tell me your sleeping bag are down or synthetic?
I wonder how a floorless tipi tent would perform under these conditions.
The Lake District can be as unrelenting as beautiful. I’m lucky to live 50 miles away from it. Thanks for the film.
You are very lucky. I would absolutely love to be a bit closer. But it’s worth the drive. Such an incredible place! Appreciate the comment.
I actually live in the Lakes and I really should do this. It’s on my doorstep so no excuse
I am impressed by the way you overcome the weather challenge.Good job!
Thanks. It is nice to have testing conditions sometimes Makes you appreciate the nice days. Thanks for taking the time to comment! ATB
I once walked over grizedale tarn next to dolly wagon pike from patterdale and over to grassmere and it looked a little bit like what you encountered. Brings back memories of my home country .I am from the lakes and you kind of expect bad weather when you go out walking in the lake district and appreciate what you get if its not raining . I had to make sure all my pack contents were in zip lock bags and dry packs. also always wore sealskin socks. Thank you for making this video of your walk in the lake district.
Thanks for watching. I always have all my important stuff in dry bags when heading to the Lakes for the reason you said. I just kinda expect rain at some point. Even if the forecast doesn’t call for it 😅. I still haven’t used sealskin socks yet. I need to get a pair. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment
@@GoingSoloOutdoors Plenty of shops in Ambleside or Keswick where you could get a pair. Where did you camp in tour video ? Looks very familiar if cloudy and wet as to familiar. Always a job to navigate in the lakes. Old school trained before sat navs and Google maps.
@@t19dal 👍 I will definitely be getting a pair. This camp was between Great End and Seathwaite Fell. Just to the west side of Great Slack
Nice walks in borrowdale I like going up to lion and the lamb
I also liked the use of the mini trangia
I love the trangia cookers they are a game changer . Better a cooked meal to raise morale and get you warm than a foil meal that's bland and rewarding ar best.
So I saw what you had for dinner, looked up a recipe, cooked it for our dinner and was a big hit, thank you. 👍
Nice! Glad you enjoyed it 👍😀. Thank you for watching.
Ask yourself next time... Which hamburger helper tonight?
@@JRMontgomery-ce6fj 😂 oh wow. But no thanks. I haven’t had a hamburger helper since I was a kid. I’d rather just make my own 👍. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. ATB
Your positive attitude is awesome. 👍
Thanks! Always happy when I get a chance to go camping 👍
Awww you looked all bummed out because the egg yolk broke lol 😂 it's ok. 😘♥️
😂 I was 👍
Excellent todd thanks for all the effort you put into your filming, fabulous to watch.Tom in Dublin 🫡
Really appreciate you continuing to watch and leave a comment! Hope you have a nice weekend!
Very impressive. Dealing with conditions like this and being totally organised despite the hell outside. Inspirational.
Not ideal camping conditions but it’s relaxing when you get to crawl inside the tent, make yourself a nice meal and just listen to the wind a rain 😀👍. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. All the best!
Ever thought of camping in the Desert ? 😅 just for a change . Hats off to you i thought you were amazing .
😂 That would be a nice change of pace 👍. Really appreciate the comment. ATB
I am sure glad I experienced that from the warm comfort of my bed.
😀👍
Hate when everything is wet, even dry stuff is wet , waiting for next upload 😊
"...even dry stuff is wet..."
And even the wet stuff is soaked ! ☆
That is one good tent for the wind extreme chefing loved this to bits
That was EPIC!
Glad you enjoyed it. Definitely a bit rougher weather than normal. Appreciate the comment! ATB
believe me all you need is good food of 2-3days and such weather, location and camp and nothing could be peaceful and relaxing to stay 2-3 days alone and relaxing in camp, how good would it be felt listening rain sound over camp while sleeping........😴🥶
That tent is a life saver Id pay for it
👍 it’s been a fantastic tent. Definitely not cheap, but it’s performed incredibly well on every trip in a variety of conditions.
