This was the exact kind of video I was hoping to find to help me with the 8hp Tecumseh on my Craftsman sleeve hitch tiller that I pull behind my garden tractor. You answered pretty much every question I had all with this one very clear and detailed video. Thanks for taking the time to post it! 😁
Great video. I was able to get my machine going perfect because of your way of articulating and the detailed close-ups throughout the entire video. I learned A LOT! Thank YOU!
Thanks mate. I picked up one of these off the side of the road that someone had given up on. They had a zip tie on the governor arm and it needed the carb cleaned. It's served me for a couple of seasons now, but it's been fiddly because the linkages are all mucked up. Now I should be able to fix it.
I have 3 of the HM80 Tecumseh engines with that set up. All 3 surge and hunt when not under load. When I'm using the machine on full throttle under load, they do not surge. I'm hopeful that the getting the governor set properly is the answer. Great video.
This video saved my bacon, thanks! Rebuilt the carb on my brothers older snow blower including the manifold gasket. All looked good but must have been a slight air leak at the manifold, tightened it up a touch more and good to go, no more uncontrolled top speed.
Nice video. I put a brand new carb on my 25+ year old craftsman. I had my linkage on correctly but after this video, a few turns on both high and low idle screws it sure started running really smooth. Thanks!
Once that throttle spring goes, good luck! No top end so it bogs down under load and throws snow half as far. Love figuring that out, thanks to this video, when there is a foot of snow in the driveway lol. It's like having a truck that the gas pedal stops half way. It'll get you to where you need to go but it will take twice as long. Great video, thanks man.
Thanks Jake for an amazing detailed video and, complete explanation of how a Tecumseh snow blower engine works. Your video helped me to adjust the governor's linkage ,as well as the low and high speed rpms screws. I wish we had small engine mechanics in my area. Who really knows how to explain in detail how thin it works. Great video. I really appreciate it. You saved time and money. Thanks and God bless you and your beautiful family in this holiday season.Great video
Thanks, just put a new connecting rod in my 10hp Tecumseh and couldn’t remember how the throttle was set up. I just started it up and it runs pretty good.
Thanks so much .. one thing I do with all these configurations, I reroute the fuel line around the tin housing. Takes more line but gets the line away from the hot engine case
Great video , when people make adjustments they should be using a tachometer to a specific RPM spec . The more important adjustment would be the HIGH or fast speed which should not go over spec RPM as to over stress engine components , this could result in engine failure . I know this is in other videos but I think that it should be mentioned at any time you talk about carb. adjustments .Thanks for the video .
Thanks. Such a simple thing made my throttle not work at all. Your instruction got me back on track and now it works. Yes, I replaced the carb and the throttle control. That is why it was not working. After that small little adjustment voila.
Thanks for the video. My snowblower is surging during mid throttle but seems to clear up ay wot. Hopefully adjusting the governor arm as you showed will correct this
Cool I fucked up the linkage and 10,000 red line put it the same as yours .and adjusted the governor. Now back out to do the snow. Great video . Thanks 😊

Excellent video. Very clear instructions on setting the throttle/govenor. Especially helpful was the part about the lever falling down. That was my problem, and now that I fixed it, it works perfectly. Also helpful was the part on how to check the govenor to see if the gear was broken. Thanks!
Good one, Jake! 👍 I’ve already done a reset of high and idle speeds on one Tecumseh snowblower using my tach but didn’t understand the linkages to the governor so this really solidified my understanding in that area. Thanks!

Great video, good instructions. I followed them exactly but still have an unsteady rpm with the governor pushing the butterfly down then it revs up then it pushes down, then up, and so forth. All my neighbors hate me. What causes that condition? At full speed it runs sort of steady but it won't idle. Weak spring on throttle lever mechanism? I took off the float bowl, float, float needle, idle air needle, and then blasted carb cleaner in all the passages. New air filter. It is an 8hp Tecumseh wood chipper with original carb.
Ive been trying to get a used 90s 8hp Toro snowblower runnings and i must say your videos has been a great help! Now i have a new carb installed and it runs but only on full or half choke, so i guess im gonna look for air leaks! Cheers from Sweden!
Awesome video bought used and it was reving way to high. Linkage and governor was wrong. Adjusted everything just like you showed. Running great now. Thanks

Note that the spring being discussed at 8:18 is available as a replacement part... Tecumish # 34663. My machine was running slow and bogging down under load and I changed out the old weak spring and it runs much better. Donyboy has a video showing all the process. For a couple bucks, just put a new one in if you are in working in here. And that's a T10 screw to adjust the high speed. You can even do it when the sheet metal heater box is reinstalled if your have good light.
Excellent video and on some of your exhaust area video shoots you can tell that damaged muffler has been on for a while since it is damaged the aluminum exhaust port. Hopefully not too much! Good idea not running that blower without the muffler!

Hi. Excellent video. I am watching your governor video and your "everything you need to know..." videos. I notice that the position of the governor rod (at the throttle lever) in the governor video is one hole down from the top position. In the "everything you need to know..." video, the governor rod is in the hole (of the throttle lever) directly above. Which video shows the correct position? Thank-you!
@@karldegroot3131 either or is ok, if you're adjusting it it really doesn't matter if it's one or 2 out, but if it's too far down or at the back it'll make a difference in the overall length of the rod.
@@EliminatorPerformance Thanks for the info and super fast response! Wondering if you've ever done a video on how to properly remove and replace the flywheel on these old Tecumsehs (when you have to replace the fuel line behind it). Did it a few years ago. Think I used a puller instead of whacking the flywheel off the crank taper so as not to damage crank bearings (I don't know what type of bearings support the crank in these engines). Anyway, just a thought...and thanks, again.

It’s about 15 years old but works like new for then snow blowing operation. Any suggestions would be helpful I run non ethanol high test with sea foam. Thanks James
Need to rebuild my carb on the 8 hp model of this engine. I will use your video to set it up. Who should I buy the carb kit or complete carb from? I do not trust some of the cheap ones I see for sale. Very well done video and explanation !!
Outstanding explanations on Tecumseh carb style and adjustments. Any video's on starter problems with 10.530 Tecumseh 1996' motors on a Husqvarna 10530 snowblower? Starter won't engage to ring gear but starter does run. Throwout gear appears to go to end of starter shaft and is clean-good spring too?
Wish you would have shown the throttle more…the spring you are referring to on my machine it doesn’t move back (down) like yours did wondering if I need to do another wrap around??
the carburator butterfly throttle should stay close when engine is not running? I noticed mine stay half open, or 1/3 open. If I move to close position stay more close but if I move throlttle lever up and after down to stop stay again half or quite half open like return spring have no force. The carburetor spring is ok, I change carburator with cinese ad is the same. There is only carburator spring to return and is like too weak with lever inserted. I've ohsk90 engine and leversge is little different: I've a coil spring on the left side, no springs on trhottle lever.
Hello.... I have the 45 inch 13hp craftsman and the throttle won't stay up in high idle it falls down... How do you fix that and this video is awesome.
I have this exact model engine with the 30” cut, I recently purchased a small tachometer to set the high speed rpm’s to manufacturer 3600 spec and the blower doesn’t throw snow past the auger housing… yikes. It seems when I adjust the rpm’s up I am able to throw snow further. I also replaced the auger belts. They have good tension and are not slipping but are notched. My two questions are this… what RPM is too high (max you’d be comfortable running) and do the notched belts make a difference?
Great detailed video! I bought a similar machine, not running for five years, i put a new carb on it. It now runs, but seems to idle kind of rough and when i give it throttle it stumbles as it revs and lacks stability. It runs but not like it should. Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks a lot. It's a Yard Machine 8hp 26" mdl. 31AS6FEF729
Came across your video while searching for a fix for my Tecumseh 9hp engine. When i light the throttle lever up, it moves forward like it should. If I test it like you do it do from the governor arm, it snaps back like it should, however, when i pull the throttle lever down, the piece with the linkage cable and spring, never returns back to its original spot. i think it should pull back when you push the lever down but it doesnt. Is that a spring issue still? thanks!
Hello my friend, your recommendations are very helpful. Thank you. I got a used snowplow with a TECUMSEH motor LH 318 and HMSK80-100. Not all small parts are original. Could you please tell me the length of Governor Link and Throttle Link. The length of mine does not match your video.
What should a guy look at if I can't run my snowblower at high rpm with out using a bit of choke. I have cleaned the carburetor out and still doing the same thing?
@@EliminatorPerformance I work at a small engine/powersports shop in Colorado. Use your videos all the time, have learned a ton from you. Thank you for the great content and knowledge.
Check the main jet again and use the file part of the torch tip cleaners to ensure it is fully open to original size. You may need to open it up by 0.002" to start and see if there is an improvement and then again it could be a valve issue also.
I did have the valve cover off and seen nothing wrong. Out of the ordinary does anyone know the valve lash. It's the the 13hp tecumseh troybuilt 45" snowblower.
On my 5hp when I engage the forward arm it wants to do a wheelie. It runs great and throws snow far, problem is it’s the original single speed version and it’s hard to keep up with it. My low idle linkage is one hole behind yours. Any ideas to tame this fast speed. I did put on an oem carburetor. Appreciate any input. Great video!
Love your vids man! Have you ever done a video on a Tecumseh 8HP m/n 155 026?? Mine has no primer bulb, and no lever controlled throttle. No choke lever either. It’s running good. I finally did my own valve job (thanks for all the excellent vids!). Bought that digital rpm tach you used in your previous video. I set my rig to around 3550. It’s rated for 4000, but I think my approach is sound. Again, thank you…
Do you have a video on the Kohler 7000 kt735 Intell choke? My choke will not close & when I tried to adjust the choke wire/ throttle cable bent in the throttle handle. I fixed that but I’m back at square 1.
Low rpms are set to wherever they idle smoothly, but usually 1500-1750. The high rpm on the bigger HP Tecumsehs are usually around 3400-3600, the older they get, the lower you want the high rpm setting. I would feel comfortable running the OHV 13hps at 3600 after a valve adjustment and carb clean.
Heyo, new sub here! Where did you get this info/ learning? Was there a course/ textbook or just experience over time? Thank you very much for the video! 🤘
Years of working on this stuff, then I went and did a night course at the local college here so I could get certified. I didn't really need that because it's not a regulated job like being a car mechanic is, but it was nice to be able to put on my business card that I'm EETC certified.
@@EliminatorPerformance Thanks for the reply! I'm going to look into that certificate. I worked as an FAA Certificated Aircraft Mechanic (A&P) for 5 years, moved and now am looking to get into small engine repair. Hopefully I will find someone as detailed as you to learn from! I really appreciate the reply! 🙏 I know my 10hp sno-blo is set correctly and the governor gear is solid thanks to your video. 👌
@@hanginwithj I've also worked on my old trucks when I was younger, and initially went to college for automotive service technician, got my 310S license, but never really did anything with that... but I learned quite a bit from that too. Before that I was a certified welder so I have quite a range of skills which is always nice when you run a business, you need to be a jack of all trades, fabrication, people skills, communication, computer skills, welding, mechanics, engineering... it's all relative to small engine repair. At the end of the day, I love to learn new things, and I don't think I'll ever stop learning, as the industry is always evolving, we constantly need to adapt.
Thanks James . A generator question we had a Loncin LC3800DDC generator which showed a 110V output which i thought was abnormal because most show 120V. The original output was 57 hertz with 111.7 volts which we adjusted to 60 hertz 112volts. This should be fine but is it normal have not seen this before.
@@waynestefinashen239 that generator seems to be sold in the UK with 110v and 230v output. No reason you could not run it at 60 hertz and bump the potentiometer up a little on the AVR to bring it closer to 120/240v. But 110/230 will not hurt anything as long as the hertz are at 60.
I have this exact tecumseh engine on a toro 622. I replaced the carb and it starts fine and runs at low rpm without any issues. The issue I am having is that I cannot get the motor to full rpm. I’ve adjusted the governor linkage every way possible and I am baffled. I wait until the motor is warm before doing any adjustments, but I can’t get it to run at high rpm. What am I missing?! Thanks!

It seems when I adjust the rpm’s up I am able to throw snow further. I also replaced the auger belts. They have good tension and are not slipping but are notched. My two questions are this… what RPM is too high (max you’d be comfortable running) and do the notched belts make a difference?
Awesome video as always, very helpful
BEST yet!
Your videos are fantastic. Thank you!
Excellent video! Well done and clear explanations - helped a ton.
Thanks for watching!
Jetting / valves
Main jet not pulling the proper amount of fuel through, or the valves need adjustment.
Great video! Best i've seen on the subject
Excellent video, very well explained. Got to love those Tecumseh engines. What do you use for a tach or do you do it by ear?
I have a stens 751-180 tachometer, I plan on doing a video on it one of these days. Thanks for watching!
Damn nice video. Excellent info. Off to look for a video I hope you made on a Briggs Twin II
Thanks from Sweden 🫡
Cheers from Ontario, Canada!
Excellent as always, thanks for shearing
Thanks for watching!
Great explanation. Curious. What do you usually set the high RPM'S And Low Rpm's at?
I believe 1750 is low and 3600 high thanks for watching and commenting we do appreciate it!
Thank you
Low rpms are set to wherever they idle smoothly, but usually 1500-1750. The high rpm on the bigger HP Tecumsehs are usually around 3400-3600, the older they get, the lower you want the high rpm setting. I would feel comfortable running the OHV 13hps at 3600 after a valve adjustment and carb clean.
@@EliminatorPerformance thanks
How do we know what the RPM is?
By ear or is there a tool for that @@EliminatorPerformance
Great video.
Thanks!
