For $25 I bought a 1995 model of a very similar MTD snow blower with an 8 HP Tecumseh. I'm having to fix a few things on it, including the carb, and I made the mistake of removing the governor arm. But here is Taryl serving me exactly the dinner I need. I followed the instructions here, and now it is running pretty good. I wish I could leave a hundred likes for this.
My Lord! I have looked ALL OVER Google-land to find this exact and precise information. Taryl - I salute you for a precise, detailed, simple explanation of the proper linkage and governor settings for my Tecumseh 11-hp snowblower engine. I NEEDED THIS! I put on a new carburetor, and I could not get the thing to run right! It would always run at the high-throttle setting, (not over-revving), and I could not get any intermediate speed settings. When I replaced the carb, I did indeed tweak that little governor arm-pivot-screw, but I thought I put it back in the same place. Since the carb was new (an expensive Tecumseh factory carb) I had to presume everything was good with the carb (non-adjustable job) - I did, however, verify the float bowl setting. It was right on the money. I use ethanol-free gas and everything. I spent an hour tweaking the idle and high-speed screws, but I could not get the beast to decrease its speed to idle. After sleeping on it and giving it much thought, I figured it MUST be the governor... but after hours of searching, I could find nothing but hit-or-miss adjustments. Then I found your channel! This is THE ONLY video I have found that shows EXACTLY what to do and how to do it. In fact, you have another video (May 2015) that shows a slightly different way to set the governor, but this one is, by far, the best. It is simple, concise, and it worked for me immediately! The machine is now just like the day I bought it. Thank you sir!
Same exact thing happened to me had bought a new carb for mine installed it and thought everything would be gravy started it ran high and wouldn't idle down now i know what to do
I've been watching repair videos for year's and can't believe I just discovered this channel a week ago. It's amazingly funny and educational! Keep up the good work. This channel is gonna take off like a rocket when more people discover it. It's unique!
Thank you! I tinkered around the whole day last week. It would not start at all. So I cleaned the carb. It started on second pull but it would rev extremely high. I couldn't get it run normal. I almost gave up and was going to buy a new snowblower (bought mine used 13 years ago. Its got to be at least 20 years old). I spend some time searching for a repair video and this is the only one I found that explained how to adjust the governor. I must have installed the governor linkage arm improperly. Its running well now. Thanks again.
Where can I get a set of those teeth? Nice video...clear instructions with some comedy. Love it! These guys could make a sitcom and make millions. It's better than anything out there today.
Tarly took the carb of to replace it with a new carb. Could not figure out why the throttle was not working. I did not realize why it would not increase in speed. I will flip the throttle control around to the top and it should be good to go. Keep the videos coming for guys like me,lol
Awesome, thanks. Just replaced the carb on an old gifted blower and I knew better than to disconnect the Governor, but of course I did and it’s idling way high. Hopefully I’ll adjust it like you show 8n the vid and all will be well. Perfect execution on the info.
Thank you making this video. Answered any questions I had except 1, is there any difference between the engine in the video and a pre 77' Tecomseh H35 3.5hp with the govenor linkage that is connected to a series 1 carburetor. Connected the linkage and the spring is still sprung without much tension.
I just want to say thank you Taryl I love everyone on your videos I've learned so much from your channel maybe one day I can meet you but this video in particular I had a troublesome org Tecumseh HH60 on a ariens rocket tiller I got for free and the linkage for the engine was missing and from your videos I made my own and tune the governor in the thing starts first pull now keep all the awesome videos coming I learn so much from you
I have a Tecmseh engine snow blower that I replaced the carb (bowl-less) after watching your videos. I can get it to start, but I need to keep pushing the primer bulb to keep it running. What should I check/adjust?
Greeting from Winnipeg Canada. Really good video Taryl!!! I’ve always dreaded the governor as I dont have a tach but this video makes it really easy. I’m still gonna get a tach though.
Taryl, I'm a third generation mechanic from my grandfather in WW2, When I saw you conducting a symphony of small engines I subscribed, Id like to buy you a bourbon!
I think that may have been the problem with my techumseh self propelled mower. It only seemed to run at half throttle even after the carb-u-traitor was cleaned. I think I screwed up the governor spring spinning the carb out on my impact drill. good to know!
Well that was awesome that made a subscriber out of me I've been watching now for a few and these tips have my go-kart running like a beast thanks man keep up the good work
Well I picked up a john deere 726 with a tecumseh h70 on it with the throttle control on the handle bars would this be roughly the same way to set the governor without running into rod through block territory
If you ever decide to do a video on governor issues with the VLV55 motors with that stupid plastic tank carbetrator on it, I would watch it 100 times. I got one now that is kicking my butt.
Whould the governor case surging of the engine because I replaced the carburetor with a new one and the ignition coil and still surging it start up great i can see the governor moving back and forth is it supposed to do that
I have a go cart with this exact engine, but missing a lot of those parts. I’m trying to replace the parts I need to get it to run, right But I need to be able to hook it up to a foot pedal throttle any advice?
Hi i have a 11hp generator with a Honda GX340 engine, with the idle controle ON, the governor keeps reving the engine up and down with the controle off the engine runs fine at full speed. I took the carb off and cleaned it all up including the idle jet, it made no difference. Does it sound like there's a problem with the low idle system or does the governor need adjusting?
So what about when it surges? When Taryl starts the motor at 10:35 after he gets the choke off, its surges back and forth and you can see the governor linkage moving. That is the problem I'm having. How do we fix that Taryl?
Exactly the information I needed, working on an 8HP Tecumseh engine right now that runs too fast and I'm trying yo adjust the governor to slow it down, thanks Taryl and your videos are funny and very educational.
Hi Taryl, first time i used my snowblower this year, 8.5hp Tecumseh, i couldnt run it off choke. Had to keep it t half choke. Remove carb, cleaned everything real well, replaced a bad o-ring on the emulsion tube, reinstalled everything, now it runs off choke, but only runs well at full throttle. When you put the throttle down to low speed idle, it runs really low almost stalling and really high. It keeps cycling back and forth slowly. Any idea what is wrong? Its the non adjustable carb. Love your vids!
i bought a old Snapper 1030 Tecumseh that does not run, this old snapper is made of steel, i change my oil, tuned it up, bought a new fuel line, bought a new carburator, degreased it, cleaned the fuel tank really really good, pulled the cord 1 time and runs good, reverse good, lots of air in the chute, will order afriction wheel and i think i have myself a snowthrower for the winter, fingers crossed, thanks Taryl your a good teacher.
I was wondering if you new why my Tecumseh engine stalls when you try to rev it up. It will idle just fine but when you try to rev it up it will stall and grey smoke will come out.
I've done this but my guy still hunts like a (word that rhymes with hunt).. should I increase the tension on my gov spring? Hunts at WOT but happy low speed idle. Carb is rebuilt clean.
Taryl, I have a 2003 Craftsman 24" snowblower 247.188160 with Tecumseh 6.5hp engine # 143.026503. I cannot find how to adjust this type governor. It's similar to the OHSK70-72501A. It was damaged by the previous owner and I can't figure it out, nor find any videos by you or anyone else. Any ideas where to learn this? Maybe a future video idea for you. Thanks
Is there a way to jam the governor on a 5-hp snowblower engine to keep it at a normal speed I do not want to open the engine and replace the broken governor.
LMAO, another great video. And we find out Taryl is quite a handyman too! Also THANK YOU TARYL for showing how to properly deal with the throttle and governator on a Tecumseh horizontal shaft engine, exactly the lesson I needed.
It's so amazing how you can come up with fresh original ideas for skits every week, kudos to you, taryl. I have a good idea for a repair segment, show how to properly replace the spring in a older Briggs recoil starter. I have lots brought to me after the owner gave up, trying to coil the spring inside the housing then hook it on the pulley then try to quickly get the fully seated before the whole thing shoots out like a snake. I stick the spring in the slot in the blower housing, hook it on the pulley, install the pulley and bend the tabs over. Then just turn the pulley and wind the spring in, then taking a pair of needle nose pliers and hooking the end of the spring into the blower housing slot. Then just wind the spring until tight, back off until the hole in the pulley lines up with the rope opening in the housing. I take a tool I made from a broom handle and a piece of throttle cable inner wire that's been flattened on the end and ground into a hook like on a sewing seam ripper and hook it into the end of the rope and fish it thru the rope opening in the housing and into the hole in the pulley and tie a double s knot and then there's your dinner!
Umm...how is this gonna work in Canada, where we don't have governors, we have Premiers? You were acting me when you showed the adjustment for those who took it apart and didn't know how to set it. My excuse is I was replacing an 8.5 hp with a 10 hp, and had to take it apart. (Tim Taylor told me if I put a bigger engine on it, I could blow the snow back to where it came from.) Thanks for this excellent very clear explanation. Much appreciated.
Got a question. On that same exact snowblower, when I start it on choke it starts fine. As soon as I go to shut the choke off the engine revs up to all hell like totally takes off. Is that a governor issue or a carbatrator needing a cleaning
Just put a new carburetor on a customer’s today, has the same issue. Starts easily but then revs really high. I’ve done everything in this video and it still wants to over rev. Did you ever figure out what the problem was? I adjusted all the set screws for the throttle, adjusted the governor and no matter the combination of settings, I can’t get it to run right.
excactly what i was looking for, I upgrade an old Canadiana, have changed the two belt, and a aftermarket carburator, and cleaned the gastank and hose so no dirt come in carburator, your video explain it all , thanks for youtube
My tecumseh doesn't have an arm or spring!!! I 'mgoing insane trying to figure out how to adjust it. From what i can gather, the linkage for the governor is actually through the pivot for the throttle arm. In other words, i have my throttle cable going from the accelerator pedal to a small arm on a heavy spring with a wire linkage to a second arm with a smaller spring and a second wire linkage to the fly valve on the carb. Thats it. Its directly connected from the pedal to the fly valve with no other linkage. I know there is a governor though, because the second arm will back off when the engine is under load, and fight against the second weaker spring. I can only guess that the governor gear inside the block is connected to that second arm through its actual pivot point (which just looks like a domed rivet). Do i have to remove the head entirely to adjust the governor gear directly??? I've done so much research on governors, and i can't find a single other governor that works even remotely like this 2.5 hp tecumseh does.
Thanks a million got it working fine now. Also love your videos but was thinking maybe we could put a fund together to get you a set of braces? Have a great one.
I’ve tried everything in this video after replacing the carburetor. Set the governor, messed with all the set screws and no matter what I try it still revs too high. It usually starts off at a regular RPM then goes to the moon. The video was great and I thought it was the torx screw on the linkage arm that was the problem. Not the case. The spring has tension and everything is set properly. I’ve got the throttle screw backed almost all the way out and it just takes off. Any ideas?
Would be nice to see a video explaining how to figure out what does what. Like if someone brings you a blower to fix after they had their fingers on it. Different spring, linkage bent, a fresh start, a benchmark type video. I have a blower I'm working on, figured everything out but I need the govener to give more power when it gets working hard. So more spring? Move spring to higher hole? Great vid bty

This has"t to be the best skit you all have done yet.

I live in Alaska and picked up a questionable but good looking snowblower motor. You guys saved me countless hours of splitting hairs!!!
might be my favorite skit yet!
I was just given a snowblower that had sitting around for some time. Your videos saved the day, thank you!
I replaced the carb on a Murray string mower and the linkage came apart. Your video was a great time saver. Thank you so much.
This was the most helpful site I have ever been too. Fixed everything just like new.
I always had issues with those Tecumseh governors. Thanks for the clear, easy to follow how-to!
Where can I get a set of those teeth?
Nice video...clear instructions with some comedy. Love it!
These guys could make a sitcom and make millions.
It's better than anything out there today.
Very helpful keep helping people like me about to go fix my surge
This guy makes more sense than most, if not all, of the DIY videos out there.
Thanks, You wouldn't believe how timely that video was for me. Now I can face a blizzard with a smile.
Tarly took the carb of to replace it with a new carb.
Could not figure out why the throttle was not working.
I did not realize why it would not increase in speed.
I will flip the throttle control around to the top and it should be good to go.
Keep the videos coming for guys like me,lol
I practice dentistry and small engine repair funny stuff love these guys
Taryl skit and tecumseh video combo. Sundays are good
Just keep it simple. Clear and concise explanation. Thank you.
Taryl, that was cowboy simple, thanks for the video as it helped me set the governor on my Tecumseh TVS115 57004c.
OMG, thank you for showing this. After 15 years I had a brain fart on my snowblower. Much thanks!!!
That ending was hilarious! 😂
Awesome, thanks. Just replaced the carb on an old gifted blower and I knew better than to disconnect the Governor, but of course I did and it’s idling way high. Hopefully I’ll adjust it like you show 8n the vid and all will be well. Perfect execution on the info.
Did the same thing. This fixed it
lol, that was the best one yet, love it, big smiles from the uk

That was a real good one funny and educational.
Well done! High detail and exactly what i need to get my job done!
Taryl, I'm a third generation mechanic from my grandfather in WW2,
When I saw you conducting a symphony of small engines I subscribed,
Id like to buy you a bourbon!
Actually helped me fix my tiller. Had to watch it a second time after I quit laughing at the dental work.
THANKS I didn't notice how it was before it fell apart, rans great now. Minnesota DIY.
These just keep getting better...lol...
One of my favorite skits! Thanks for the tips on the snowblower too. My neighbor has that exact model should I ever need to help him fix it. Thanks!

Would it be relatively the same way to do it with my vertical shaft 8hp tecumseh engine?
Dude, you saved my bacon on this one! Thanks again!!!
If you ever decide to do a video on governor issues with the VLV55 motors with that stupid plastic tank carbetrator on it, I would watch it 100 times. I got one now that is kicking my butt.
Taryl. Do you know why my throttle cable works the carb throttle when engine is off but not when engine is ideling ?
Can you get a replacement governor spring for these motors I have it h60?
Taryl was the Best 10 seconds she ever had
I have the same measure a minibike. What if I just only hooked up the car to a throttle and had the governor arm linkage disconnected?
Whould the governor case surging of the engine because I replaced the carburetor with a new one and the ignition coil and still surging it start up great i can see the governor moving back and forth is it supposed to do that

So what about when it surges? When Taryl starts the motor at 10:35 after he gets the choke off, its surges back and forth and you can see the governor linkage moving. That is the problem I'm having. How do we fix that Taryl?
Most likely the idle circuit of the carb is not putting out gas, or not enough gas.
THANX again
Our governor wasn't working well but we finally got him out of office.
Hopefully, the spring and metal wire isn't defective too!
Awesome skits and skill taryl. Learned alot from u.
Exactly the information I needed, working on an 8HP Tecumseh engine right now that runs too fast and I'm trying yo adjust the governor to slow it down, thanks Taryl and your videos are funny and very educational.
We're gonna build a fort! It's gonna be great!
Thanks for the info how to set the governor.
Handy tip & good video guys.
Me goes outside to check how far my govenor moves to make sure its not broken 🤣

Love your vids!
Funny funny funny you guys are great. Working at a dealer for so many years i can relate to all your skits. Small engine repair is easy. Right?
right on this will help me with the engine I brought home , it's missing alot of peices 😆
You're a good man Love you videos and your knowledge
What a great video, thanks for the instructions.
The end was awesome, great video
The end skit was so funny !!!!
Hey i have on exmark zero turn 18hp vanguard ,the problem is cuts off when I’m mowing any clue what’s the problem is thanks

Thx , that’s why I’m governor wasn’t happy lol runs like a dream now
I was wondering if you new why my Tecumseh engine stalls when you try to rev it up. It will idle just fine but when you try to rev it up it will stall and grey smoke will come out.

LOL. Another good one Taryl. I liked Bob's cap. It says "Bob's Cap".
I have learned the hard way not to be smoking a fine cigar when Taryl starts up with his comedy skits....LOL
Thanks for posting this informative and entertaining video. Time for a cold beer !
Very good , funny and educational . Thank you so much Daryl !

Your vids are getting scary professional! Hillarious!
Thank you for the info...first time seeing u guys...hollarious...!
excactly what i was looking for, I upgrade an old Canadiana, have changed the two belt, and a aftermarket carburator, and cleaned the gastank and hose so no dirt come in carburator, your video explain it all , thanks for youtube

Try turning the piece on carb that tryl show you back and forth, if it don't move the vane for the throttle butterfly is stuck...
Great vid bty
we need more swap shop!!!!!
Thats good one! Shop swap! Great video as always!
Taryl is going to GET SOME!
I think its Mrs Dactyl....In real life....I was about to include a joke about dinner but. lets keep it G rated.
