    The people find the American siren “too alarming”.... isn’t that literally what a siren is for? To be alarming...?

      Exactly. However there is a European psychological conditioning to the two tone siren that must be quite alarming to the average European. The problem with New York City is extreme distracted driving and drivers who do not follow basic traffic laws. The problem is there is not enough aggressive enforcement of the laws. This is not a problem in LA or Seattle yet they to have super heavy traffic nonstop.

      With the gridlock that is basically permanent in NYC, cars are never getting out of the way to begin with. A lot of US cities have seriously terrible road design. As if the roads were laid out in such a way that they'd cause maximum gridlock with minimal cause.

    • @J4ck0fAll_Game5
      @J4ck0fAll_Game5 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Fermitu Poupon gridlock is caused 100% by impatient drivers. If drivers paid more attention and waited until there was room to go through the intersection, gridlock wouldn’t occur. But of course NYC drivers are notoriously a-holes so this probably won’t be fixed until we have self driving vehicles.

    Police sirens are designed to sound loud and scary that way people will move out of the way. This is exactly why new york adapted the rumbler siren. Adapting this european style siren will only delay response times within a city that already has massive amounts of traffic, and it would counteract the semi-recent decision to adapt the rumbler siren.

    Before responding to any emergency, responders will be required to submit an environmental impact study, conduct interviews of all people who could potentially be on the route taken and obtain written permission from all tenant HOAs. After a 90 day "Cooling off Period" all people potentially affected would be reinterviewed. If at least 75 percent respond positively, the emergency run can be made. The responders will also be required to speak respectfully to any homeless people along the route and consume one portion of locally sourced vegetables.

    Worst idea ever. If a loud siren does not get anyone out of the way, a softer siren will just be useless. Noise is not the problem here, it's the attention and scare that the siren should give to people, so that they can get out of the way or potentially scare off the criminals from a distance. A siren like that, will legit be useless. Listen to Italy's sirens, they're just plain annoying garbage. American sirens at least ain't garbage and use different tactics, like the rumbler to get people's attention. People don't like the noise? Get used to it if you want to live there. Anytime when I'm in Europe, I barely notice the sirens, while back home in Canada, I still jump everytime I hear a firetrucks air horn, that's how you know it works.

      Mikel Sopelana Durango- well from the articles that I've read in the last 30 or so minutes, response times in the U.S average at around 8-9 minutes, 3-4 for critical emergencies and around 10-12 for non emergencies. In Europe and parts of Australia, I've seen response times around 10-12 minutes on average. In some parts it may be different but I think that changing a siren also has a mental attitude linked to it. People in Europe have most likely grown used to the use of Hi-Lo sirens and European sirens in general. People in America and Canada have grown used to American sirens, such as Rumbler, Wail, Yelp, and Q sirens on firetrucks. So I think that when adding new sirens, especially in NYC, the drivers aren't going to move out of the way as much, not getting used to the new and quieter siren. And from personal experience, I think that if a siren is loud and dramatic, such as a rumbler with a constant airhorn, it makes drivers move out of the way more because they think that something serious is happening. So idk I guess it is all based upon accustoms and responses.

      At night the lights work very well, sirens are rarely used at night in Sweden, except when there is an intersection and traffic is not giving way. As that time some idiots crossed the road outside the fire station between the fire trucks and the ambulance. They had the "attention idiot"-siren blasted at them from two meters. They sure got out of the way fast, and the sound scared me who was 20 meter behind the ambulance.

      New York's previous siren sounds, as in the very beginning of this video, HAVE been changed to the high/low Euro siren, which is much more pleasant. It's supposed to be law, that vehicles and pedestrian traffic get out of the way of emergency vehicles w/sirens and/or lights flashing. That law simply needs to be enforced. What's weird, is that London seems to have switched from the nicer Euro style to the old NYC annoying type of siren, like the siren in the very beginning of this video. Patients would sometimes ask the ambulance to turn off that older type of siren, as it causes a lot of anxiety.

Personally, I think hi lo is not attention grabbing enough. I also think this is extremely contradictory. The problem with NYC may be all the concrete structures, which reflect and echo sounds and thus prolong and even exacerbate the noise issue. The scientific evidence of sirens and pitch and lights is lacking, but does point in the direction of less sound. Very high sounds with flashing lights startle people into making bad driving decisions. It could be abrupt braking, which creates dangerous situations. Often in Europe you will experience emergency vehicles that use only the lights, and turn on sirens at intersections and then immediately off again after an intersection. Due to the sound-proofing of modern cars, lower, rumbling sirens are also better than high-pitched sirens. I live very close to fire and police (neighbors) and a hospital. The sirens are also annoying in Europe.

    I’m sorry, you stand next to an ambulance in UK for few seconds and you’re going deaf. That thing is so loud, I can hear it across the town. Although that is good, because you can hear them from far away when in a car.
    On another hand, when I lived in Europe for some time I remember hearing the ambulance once it was really close to me, unlike in UK.

    Jesus really? Whats next? Somebody who gently knocks on the window of every car in front of the emergency vehicle and whispers gently for them to please move if it wouldn't be an inconvenience? I swear this country is just racing to the bottom.

    • @PannierLaw
      @PannierLaw 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes because England uses basically the same sirens compared to NYC if think what they meant by “European sirens” was French or German sirens

    I hope they know I watched so many videos of fdny rescue 1 which is stationed in Manhattan it's blaring federal Q doesn't get people out of the way but they think a much quieter siren will be more effective you have got to be joking.

    if there even people go across the street when a frickin ambulance is trying to make his way to the accident, the alarm cannot be alarming enough.

    0:24 “others find the sound of US sirens alarming and disturbing”
    Well they aren’t designed to be relaxing and peaceful. I’m not a sirenologist, but I’m pretty sure the point of a siren is to let the people in front know to get out of the way not tell them to take their time and fall asleep at the wheel.

      uhm actually in Europe you hear all kinds of sirens for many years already, well except for some Japanese sirens; But it's definetly no recent trend that wail and yelp sirens (which btw are originally from Europe, not from the US!) are used across Europe
