@@florianopolis6299 It was a reform of one of the UK law in 2012 i think (?). But his speech about this should also applies to all country that promotes free speech even on personal basis. Before the reform, people can practically get someone arrested by being offended (or even a possibility of someone hearing/seeing it getting offended). The most famous one is an oxford student getting arrested for saying a horse looks gay lmao.
      Before the reform
Section 5 made it an offense to use "threatening, abusive, or insulting words or behaviour".

The initial vids with the green bg should be from Tommy Bowe Ireland AM, and should be around or after Rowan's movie Man vs Bee, so around 2022, that one isnt aimed at certain law i think, just an interview on his statement to Irish Times against Cancel Culture "Comedies job is to offend" "Every joke has a victim. •  7 วันที่ผ่านมา

Agreed. The title is clickbait. Rowan Atkinson is sharing that those who are easily offended and claim woke are too soft-skinned and need a vaccine to bolster their character. Those who are offended most likely do not know why they are offended. Most of the right wingnut sheeple drank the cool-aid. Say hello to Jim Jones when you get there.
The post before me has nailed this and I only want to share my agreement with them.
The truly offended woke people are the ones that are now realizing their actions have consequences and are googling after Nov. 5th what a tariff is, realizing that their family members are going to be deported, understanding that they have signed over the rights of their mothers, daughters, to a sociopath. If anyone wants to see what woke really means it is the buyers' resource that they voted against their self-interests.

Now suppose I asked this: What is the different b/t a New Zealander and a sheep? Answer - you guessed it. How, about, the difference b/t a Canadian and a moose. Again, you guessed. Rowan Atkinson has been pro the right of comedians to offend since *long* before the modern "woke" culture. Back in the day, Rowan and other comedians had to fight against "heresy" laws. First for the right to offend christianity (70s and 80s) and then the right to offend islam (00s). Atkinson is just being consistent on a decades long stance he has had on the right of comedians to offend. "Woke" is just another religion to him.

@@TheJH1015 With all due respect, I fail to see the logic in your argument. What you just said is more or less stating the obvious, of course hate speech can have lasting effects on people, this does not mean that the solution is incriminating the right to free speech.
I am American and European (Danish to be specific), legally connected to both countries. I have seen firsthand what being too hyper progressive does to people (Denmark), and what freedom to do hate speech without consequences (some places in USA) does to people. One makes the population too sensitive that they take offense from almost everything, the other allows people to commit genuine hate speech without consequences.
The difference between hate speech and the First Amendment (The right to free speech, practice of religion, etc) is that the First Amendment doesn't justify hate speech, nowhere in it does it say racism or blind hate is allowed. So what you're interpreting as the result of free speech, is in reality the result of old racism that the world has become too progressive to forget and move on from.
Ordinary people don't care about ethinicity, about pronouns, about sexual orientation, they care about living comfortable lives and going about their business. They will look at people from those groups and treat them like normal ordinary people until they give them a reason not to, which is precisely what woke culture, or what some people call the Woke Virus, has done to the world.
The easiest way to move forward from racism, from hate speech, is to simply stop talking about it and making it the primary topic of many conversations. This is not to say groups who genuinely do commit hate speech for no reason should not be punished, they should because it is malicious use of their God-given right, but it should not incriminate or hinder the right to free speech nor the right to free expression for everyone else.

Not to hide from them, or to try to hide them from ourselves and others. But to talk about them, and why they offend us. Or why we should challenge them. We shouldn't be recalling and stopping publication of Dr. Seuss books, we should be discussing why the few examples of caricature are offensive, and how to address them. This is why we need comedians ... deep , witty insights on or just over the edge of "moral". Sometimes it might offend even me but it keeps us on our toes and it puts things in perspective. Cancelling someone just because someone disagrees or gets offended by something someone said in a certain setting is utterly ridicules and a sign of sheepish behavior .. just follow the masses so your opinions don't stand out. ANYTHING and EVERYTHING could and should be a topic of discussion and jokes. Getting insulted and having feelings, SO WHAT? I do think some topics go a little too far though. Like recent news and deaths, jokes about those come over as insensitive especially if it's all around the people mourning victims or being shocked still by big events. Like those topics should be handled with care. And not every claimed dark joke is actually dark humor. Sometimes it's just someone judging a minority. Like the guy that made a retard joke that included genocide. Like that was too far in my opinion. That's not dark humor anymore that's signaling someone doesn't have a right to live in your opinion.
And one of the rules of free speech is still that your content can not inspire hate against any kind of minority. Which that joke did and the guy did need to apologize for it and do community service with a bunch of people that are mentally handicapped.
But like regular humor is fine even dark humor or humor regarding discrimination. Just make sure the jokes themselves don't entirely denounce someone else's experience but that you laugh at the ridiculousness of why someone gets discriminated against or why a discriminatory mindset can lead to hilarious situations. I don't mind those at all. They put in perspective how absurd social rules are while bringing attention to heavy topics.

@@junrobin9335 If you think it is too far, you have right to ridicule that opinion and the person too.
      You have that right too.
The problem of people today is they take stupid words too seriously - they actually give power to them this way - instead of ignoring or ridiculing them, they consider them relevant.
We need to learn to distinguish between rubbish and valuable speech first of all and approach them accordingly.
I think the problem of this era is that many people, not guided by natural selection of ability to publish ideas (worked before with official media but collapsed with introduction of social media), are confused and do not distinguish between natural authority (people who know what actually makes sense, and there is also good reason to believe them) and random guy with no expertise.
Also, people are so confused now they often cannot distinguish between humor and a speech intended to be serious.

    • @junrobin9335
      @junrobin9335 8 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

@@eltwarg6388 I am saying that freedom of speech has a limit on it. Aka, don't spread hate. There have been comedians who have caused bad people to get bad ideas. Hell they got cited as inspiration. And when you got die hard people telling you to off yourself cause they got the idea from a joke.
The joke itself clearly didn't land and caused societal problems instead of bringing them to light and ridiculing how stupid they are.
It is still punishable to incite violence against other people.
I agree that most humor isn't that. But the fact I've seen a few cases of it go incredibly south. Clearly the guy didn't mean to inspire the guy to off his special needs child, that is still what that joke inspired the guy to do so. Comedy isn't just a mindless amount of words that become so silly you laugh at it. It's pointed critique on society made more palatable in the form of a joke.
If the joke inspires others to cause harm it's not a joke anymore.

Any psychopath dare to call some joke reason for his action will be reason for us to limit freedom of speach? Do you really believe he would not get that inspiration somewhere else sooner or later?
I can see this as a problem if we talk about a system of manipulation, like a sect or a violence spreading organization, but random joke?!

@@eltwarg6388 Clearly shows you''ve been privileged enough to never be the target of a joke ending in more than one case of unneeded violence.
And again freedom of speech literally states that you have all the freedom you want as long as it does not infringe on the freedom of someone else. This is specifically defined as not spreading ideas of violence. Telling a crowd to put the mentally ill in the german showers is pretty much equal to inciting violence, especially if it succeeds in it's upset.
He may have meant it as a joke, but that is still a consequence of his words. And like you said so eloquently before, you have to deal with the consequences of your words. In this case it's court cases, a fine and community service with the people he said in a joke should die.
Comedy is the art of language not the art of mindless spouting offensive stuff and standing by for validation. You still need an actual punch line and a valid criticism on society. His joke had neither of those.

With the exception of some special cases that should be treated as such, it would be a benefit for humans to step away from the hyper-sensitivity promoted by the so-called "progressive" (or "liberal") and embrace the idea of developing immunity. For a comedian in a comedic setting he is right. I work in a correctional center where bullying is rife and suicide kills many times more officers than inmates do. Very many time. The bullying is always cowardly dressed as humour, calling officers mah nigga, escribing female officers generically as vaginas, physically forcing a female officer face in close to theirs and speaking obscenities into her face. It is all dressed as humour and jokes so that they can blame the victim. I am in NSW Australia and in over two hundred years inmates have killed 10 officers mostly during escape attempts, our suicide rate is probably about once per month. I enjoyed Rowan's police joke when it was first aired and tv series such as love thy neighbour. Context is everything, change the context and the joke becomes the insult.

I wholeheartedly agree with Rowan Atkinson, and often wonder what today’s ‘woke’ brigade would make of Alf Garnet. This was brilliant clever comedy. We brits have long had a reputation for being good at laughing at ourselves and rather than now suppress this as we’re now expected to do, we should be allowed to teach others to adopt the same approach. Then no one would be able to claim offence.
I’m appalled at the emergence of what has been labelled “The thought police” in the media reports of their visits to peoples homes. It is obvious from the reports that they are not comfortable doing what they’re doing but are compelled from the highest authority. Very frustrating and stressful for the individual officers. What started out as a dictat of good intent has quickly degenerated into a serious threat to free speech, and I’m reminded of what takes place in Russia and other countries. I never thought we would see this in Britain.
To quote the French philosopher Voltaire “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” This has served humans well for a long time and I’m appalled that we’re now threatened with punishment for following its message.

Sure, there are limits to everything, but I believe that in the majority of cases those limits are still miles and miles away. I don't think this issue has anything to do with 'woke' culture specifically, though. They're easy to make fun of, yeah, but the 'anti-woke' people are often just as ridiculous in what offends them. Whether it's out of wokeness or just pearl-clutching, it all comes down to people calling for censorship and punishment of trivialities, and I think the moment society bends to those demands, everyone will be worse off for it.

He is talking free speech and not about mechanical weapons both of them are two different things and must be handled different. With free speech many people misunderstand that it means u can spread hate speech and don't get punished no it's not first ammendment doesn't allow free speech to spread hate or give violent speech regarding racism, targeting ethinic groups or such sorts. (I know it's rather a complex issue to sort it out) But what he u are saying is mechanical weapons that can instantly decide people's lives!! Guns in my personally opinion for a long time in USA has caused more unwanted deaths then protect people...and one might as well have to look at result in the broader perspective to understand if something has been useful or has harmed human lives more. His methodology although is debatable but that is one of the thing he is asking for bring in more objective debates rather than punishing people directly just bcs one is offended by it

@@anonymous891 I didn't properly enumerate the relationship between the 1st amendment (free speech) and the 2nd amendment (the right to keep and bare arms). You can't have one without the other. Witness Brittan right now where the government is arresting people for non-violent posts online. Further, please look up some firearms usage stats in the United States. Firearms are used legally far more often to defend people, than to take lives illegally...the numbers aren't even close. So yes, civilian ownership of guns is a net positive in maintaining lives and freedom in the United States.

100%. The issue with trying to outlaw offense is that it doesn't fix the issue, it just moves the issue behind closed doors. Prohibition did not decrease the use of alcohol, it just hid it, and allowed it to empower criminals. When "haters" are free to express their views and openly confronted by the majority, they are known, and their victims see the support around them. When you try to make hate a crime, it still circulates, in dark echo chambers, until it explodes, often with deadly consequences.

If those comedians want to pick on me then that is their right as Rowan says. My incredibly intelligent parents taught me that openly responding to those who taunt you is giving them what they want. They want you to be upset. Don’t give them that power and satisfaction of thinking that they have affected you. No one can hurt you emotionally unless you allow them to. I am not a fan of Rowan Atkinson's comedic style, That is just my taste. He is 100% correct in everything he says, He has my full support and respect on these issues.

An older speech of Rowan Atkinson, but it can´t be repeated enough. When I was a child and I watched Mr. Bean, I couldn´t imagine that one day we would have to fight for free speech and even less that Mr. Bean would be one of the bravest fighters in this war.
My greatest respect for you, Sir Rowan Atkinson!

There is one thing I was taught as a kid: "Put yourself in the other person's shoes before you act."
It's a kind of empathy that I think is something that should be more apparent these days, but alas, the opposite is the case.

In the old video of Sir Rowan's free speech lecture, the sign above his head reading: Feel Free To Insult Me, always makes me smile.
That's because I'd love to see someone trying to do so. :)

The input from the person behind the scenes, parroting what Atkinson said almost verbatim, was invaluable.
It’s like I was watching a video and reading the comments at the same time.

I love this man! I have since I was a young man and I will continue to do so as long as he stands his ground and keeps his moral standard, something we all need to stand behind! Mr. Atkinson is a hero and everyone should recognize this!
