can i just say, the fact that you did more than one type of clothing to embroider on is fantastic because i haven't watched anyone else explain that yet. im just beginning to hand embroider and would like to sell my stuff. so me watching this video was really helpful towards me being able to do that. thank you.
i’m new to embroidering on clothes and i’ve been struggling to find helpful info for beginners, this is absolutely AMAZING and is extremely helpful. thank you SO much!!
This is a great video. I want to learn hand embroidery _primarily_ for visible mending, and the amount of information on embrodering on clothing is surprisingly scant, especially when it comes to design transfer.
You are a saint! A thousand times thank you for adding links in the description, I've been searching for hours but I didn't really know what to look for, I was super close to giving up.
My most favourite hoodie has a bunch of small holes and tears in it from years of wear, and I'm thinking of patching it up with embroidered flowers with leaves and stems :D thanks for the nice informative video
I did this today with a favourite pair of jeans and it's turned out really cute. I used some flowers, some bees, joined it up with a few stems and leaves. Do it you won't regret it!
Thank you for the very informative video! I’m a beginner embroider and wanted to do something on a shirt for a friend and had no idea how to proceed. Thank you for the guidance!
Just found your channel and really appreciate all the good advice. I've yardsaled a treasure trove of embroidery supplies and can't wait to start customizing my wardrobe!
This is amazing, thank you so much for all the effort you went to for this. You have covered all of my questions and more that I hadn't yet thought of. I also have ADHD so I struggle sitting through entire videos but everything was relevant and the information/tips were all presented in a very chronological way, so it kept my interest the whole way through. At the moment I'm only doing my first embroidery and I'm sewing purchased patches onto a jacket but this is the next step that I want to learn so I am writing a shopping list of the tools I will need for this next step. Thanks again.
I’m new to embroidery and a new follower and can I just say your videos are the absolute best! Thank you so much for explaining things so clearly, and for the wonderful recommendations. I only wish I had gotten into this craft sooner!
Anything you're going to put through the washing machine, make sure the exposed threads aren't too long! Use couching stitches and other techniques that keep the visible parts of the stitches nice and short and they'll be less likely to catch on something in the wash. My first-ever embroidery project was a patch of my favorite Pokemon. I put it on one of my favorite dresses, but because of the long satin stitches I used as fills, the whole thing got utterly destroyed in the wash. I had to remove the patch completely, and the glue I used stained the dress permanently.
Thank you! I've just finished the classic white linen shirt I love and it's just begging for a design. Are those your 2 dogs? Perfect subject for a sweat shirt. Cute! Looks like a mom and her pup. DMC in my opinion is the gold standard in threads. The best quality & variety of colors. Love your tats btw.
If you are going to embroider on t shirt material what material would you go for or which would be best? 100% Cotton, respun etc? Would you go for a lighter weight? An which type of stabliser would you use? Thanks for all the tips. Really helpful!
Thank you for sharing. Love all the tips and tricks. I love do 3D embroidery on denim. But it always cringkle or stretch all over my embroidery edges. May I have the tips so I can have a nice fine embroidery without cringkle all over the edges? Thank you so much before 💖💖💖💖
When deciding where you want the design to go, I think it would be easier to turn the sweater inside out and then place the stabilizer. It eliminates the guesswork and finagling
thank you so much!! this video is so clear and helpful. I especially appreciate the product recommendations-- there are so many different stabilizers out there, it's hard to know where to start. I have a question: when working with a product like super solvy and using a permanent marker (like a micron pen) to trace a design, do I have to worry about the black marker showing through the final embroidery piece if I use light colored threads? If anybody out there knows the answer or has thoughts/opinions, I'd love to hear them!
I'm getting into embroidery and I really want to try doing stuff with clothes. Do you have thoughts on the binders that go on the back of your work? Like the ones that you iron on that are supposed to help with texture and longevity?
I personally don’t have any experience with them. Whenever I embroider on clothes I double knot all of my threads and wash everything on delicate / hang dry them and it’s held up ok for me! But I’ll have to look into some different products and maybe do a comparison soon!
I have the same question. For a really nice finish, Id love to have a type of permanent stabalizer, like a Pelon 101, that is soft to the touch but hides my knots.
I want to do embroidery on my jacket sleeves, will it itch?? that's what I'm afraid of LOL I have been doing embroidery for a few years but never on clothing!
You’re welcome! For natural fabrics like cotton you won’t normally need it, but it its kind of thin it wouldn’t hurt to either double up the fabric or use a stabilizer if you’d like!
I’m a beginner in embroidery but do have good sewing skill. Your videos are very helpful for me to get started. I want to know do I need to wash and heat dry the fabric/clothing before hand in case they may be prone to shrinkage. Are the threads and stabilizers shrink proof ? Thanks for your advice👍
So glad you find them helpful! I would definitely prewash the clothes. As for afterwards, it’s ideal to hand wash or delicate wash and hang dry anything you embroider on just to be on the safe side!
what kind of marking device would you use on the super solvy if you were working on a dark fabric? or would you just not and use the stick and stitch one, instead
when applying the stabilizer, could you just apply it on the shirt inside out since the positioning would be the same when flipped back? would make it a lot easier to apply the stabilizer on the flat shirt inside out rather than trying to fit it through the neck hole
was just wondering, if I want to embroider something onto a stretchy t-shirt fabric, and am using the printable sulky stick and stitch, is that a strong enough stabilizer, or should I use an additional stabilizer as well? Thanks!
I use embroidery needles mainly for everything. In regards to size, I usually go by strands of thread used and not necessarily material!! I have a post that has a needle size chart that may be helpful here. :) crewelghoul.com/blog/hand-embroidery-needle-sizes-explained-needle-size-chart/
You can! I'd advise choosing one that is 100% cotton without elastic. It never hurts to add a bit of stabilizer on the back, I find it makes things easier to stitch.
Technically you could use regular thread! But I find pearl or stranded cotton embroidery floss has more color options. For stranded floss you can choose to use more than one strand for thicker stitches and lines.
Do you need to fully take off the stabilizer inside/under the fabric after you’re done or just the leftover on the outside of the design? I’m assuming we leave what’s sort of inside the design and not really visible
Is the Pellon tear away stabilizer supposed to stay with the clothing? I mean, it looks like you just teared away the excess part, and the part that supported the embroidery was still there?
I personally don't and I've never had any issues. There are some stabilizers out there that you can iron onto the back, but I have never used them so I'm not sure if they work well with embroidery!
can i just say, the fact that you did more than one type of clothing to embroider on is fantastic because i haven't watched anyone else explain that yet. im just beginning to hand embroider and would like to sell my stuff. so me watching this video was really helpful towards me being able to do that. thank you.

In the 60s and 70s girls would just do simple shapes on jeans. Butterflies, rainbows, peace signs, etc
Thanks for the advice! The transferring tips are really helpful, since sometimes I avoid new projects because I don't want to transfer the design.
This is a great video. I want to learn hand embroidery _primarily_ for visible mending, and the amount of information on embrodering on clothing is surprisingly scant, especially when it comes to design transfer.
Really appreciate the info! New to hand embroidery & definitely would like to try doing it on clothing some time.

I think your video is excellant. Thank you. I have used the starch paper for machine sewing one time. It was a lot of fun.

I don’t usually have a problem with it! You can always do a test swatch to see how everything will look before you commit to it though!

Could you also hand draw on the stick and stitch fabric instead of printing?

Hi. Can you embroider on crocheted fabric?
when applying the stabilizer, could you just apply it on the shirt inside out since the positioning would be the same when flipped back? would make it a lot easier to apply the stabilizer on the flat shirt inside out rather than trying to fit it through the neck hole
Yes, I applied it in a very inconvenient way in this video haha
Great tips, thank you 😊

What needles do you use on jeans? Sweatshirts? Sweaters?

Can you embroyd on a cotton shirt? If so, do you need a stabiliser?
You can! I'd advise choosing one that is 100% cotton without elastic. It never hurts to add a bit of stabilizer on the back, I find it makes things easier to stitch.
Can I use any thread for embroidery or should I only use embroidery threads ?
Technically you could use regular thread! But I find pearl or stranded cotton embroidery floss has more color options. For stranded floss you can choose to use more than one strand for thicker stitches and lines.
@@crewelghoul What I can really get rn is some normal thread. It won’t make much of a difference right? And thank you so much
What about a cotton tee with less stretch? Is that more successful?
Yes, 100% cotton works! I’d steer clear of any elastic
Do you need to fully take off the stabilizer inside/under the fabric after you’re done or just the leftover on the outside of the design? I’m assuming we leave what’s sort of inside the design and not really visible
Very nice 👌
Hello, thank you so much for the vid!! What kind of stabilizer would you use on a cotton tshirt?
Sorry for the delayed reply, I just saw this! I would use pellon stick and tear away on the back of the shirt!
So if the fabric is strong enough a stabilizer isn’t necessary? Essentially a stabilizer is used to avoid puckering and distortion or am I mistaken?
@@JonnyTwoWheels yes, if it’s a thin fabric. Or if you’re stitching on something that’s stretchy.
Does embroidery on hoodie also needs a stabilizer on the back ?
No always if it’s a heavier 100% cotton! But if it’s stretchy I would use some
Is the Pellon tear away stabilizer supposed to stay with the clothing? I mean, it looks like you just teared away the excess part, and the part that supported the embroidery was still there?
It usually mostly disintegrates once you wash it. It’s more so just to use while you’re stitching!
@@crewelghoul Thanks for the explanation.
Wow 🤩
Do you put anything over the inside/back of the stitches once it’s done?
I personally don't and I've never had any issues. There are some stabilizers out there that you can iron onto the back, but I have never used them so I'm not sure if they work well with embroidery!
How do you go about removing the stabiliser backing?
It depends on what kind you use but there is tear away and water soluble kinds that are removable!
How can I place the shape I made on cotton fabric on another fabric?
I'm not sure I understand what you're asking, do you mean putting an embroidery on another fabric? If so you could sew it on like patch!
Yes. Thank you❤
My friend use to embroider over stains on her kids clothes. Jeans need a strong needle.
Love that idea!
you're the fucking coolest
