How to Manual Swap a 350Z - Budget Track Car Build

  • DISCLAIMER: I am in no way responsible for any faults or failures resulting from attempting this swap. I'll offer any advice I can give, but I am not a mechanic so take everything with a grain of salt.
    This is the third video in my Budget 350Z Track Car Build. After collecting parts for the past few months, I decided to get rid of the 5 speed automatic transmission and swap in a CD009 6 speed manual. You may notice that I don't show a few steps in order to keep the video short (exhaust, driveshaft, brace reinstall, etc). Given that these are mostly reassembly steps, I assume those attempting this swap are capable (just do the opposite of disassembly). If you are looking to do this yourself, I'll list below everything I needed in order to do the swap. If you have any questions about the process, comment below and I'll get back to you when I can.
    Parts needed for swap:
    Transmission
    Clutch set (friction disc, pressure plate, alignment tool)
    Pilot bearing (recommend OEM)
    Release/Throw-out bearing (HIGHLY recommend OEM)
    Flywheel bolts
    Pressure plate bolts
    Clutch fluid lines
    Clutch master cylinder
    Clutch slave cylinder
    Clutch pedal
    MT Brake pedal (optional - can cut the AT pedal)
    MT Driveshaft
    MT Shifter trim bezel
    Shifter and knob (if not included w/ transmission)
    Clutch fluid
    Manual transmission fluid
    I DID NOT SWAP TO A MANUAL ECU OR HARNESS. Literally everything that I used in this swap was in the list above and shown in the video. Because I'm using the original (5AT) ECU and harness, there is a small amount of wiring that is necessary to start the car. Since this wiring is different based on the model year of the 350Z, I made a follow-up video detailing that process for all years. You can watch that here: • 350Z Manual Swap Pt. 2...
    YOU WILL NOT HAVE REVERSE LIGHTS OR CRUISE CONTROL. If you choose to do the swap in the exact way that I have, you will have to do additional wiring for these to function again. I have not done this wiring as I do not need reverse lights or cruise control. Therefore, I have not made a video detailing how to do this nor do I intend to.
    Thanks for watching!

    If you have questions about the swap or what I did in the swap, please do us both a favor and make sure to actually watch the two videos I've posted and read the descriptions (link to the second video: th-cam.com/video/ENHhvikHqGg/w-d-xo.html). Hell, you may even see that I've answered the exact same question in the comments somewhere already.
    I'm not posting this to be rude. TH-cam tends to only show me about 1 in every 10-20 comments on my videos, for some reason, so it may be weeks before I answer your question as I'm not on here very often.

    • @DillonSmith1
      @DillonSmith1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey man, thanks for the kind words. To my knowledge, the process should be pretty much the exact same on an HR 350Z. Just make sure you get a transmission and clutch set from an HR, as they're different from the DE's. They have an internal slave, so the external versions won't work. Come to think of it, you may need a different clutch fluid line as well because of that.

Only thing different is also swapped forced induction setup plus fuel imcectors, pump and haltech ecu and wideband controller. from 2005 to 2003 still air in clutch hydraulic I can’t seem to get all out and considering options on rear end and I really just straight lining drag racing so......saga continues and yes clutch wiring is simple but will confuse you if you let it. Lol

    • @DillonSmith1
      @DillonSmith1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that's the case with most wiring jobs, haha. And yes, the 350Z clutch is notorious for being a pain to fully bleed so I guess I got lucky. Your build is clearly a bit more power-focused than mine, but who knows. Maybe soon enough. Good luck with everything!

      It is different, but I'm still using the auto cluster. The main difference is that the screen is just blank now and there's no shift light. I have a cluster from a manual that I may end up swapping over at some point, but for the time being the original is serving the purpose just fine.

    Hi there man again :D ! I have this one issue after making it MT from AT ! engine cranks perfectly, everything works perfectly, but sometimes/most of the times the car just wont start, it cranks, but engine doesnt start up, IF it does it does from one and half of a crank, and when it was AT there was no issue with starting, so as i read something about crank or cam sensors ,i doubt that thats the case. Like for example, it can start from first turn of the key ,and it can start only on 15th turn of the key sometimes, the key turn amount might variate, but most of the times ,it takes some time to turn key on and of when it goes further than just cranking.

    Very informative, doing this conversion on RHD 350GT. at which point did you reinstall the crankshaft position sensor, did it go into the same location? does it have have to be adjusted for manual?? Also did you have to TDC the engine for flywheel install??

    • @DillonSmith1
      @DillonSmith1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Crank sensor goes back in the exact same way, no adjustment for the manual swap. I would recommend reinstalling it once you're done bleeding the clutch line as it can get in the way a bit. Your flywheel will have guide holes for an indicator pin on the crank that only allows it to bolt up the correct way, so you shouldn't have to worry about TDC.

    Hi Dillon, i have done the MT swap last couple of weeks, have the rhd 2003 skyline 350gt. Everything now is mechanically done. I am still using the 5AT harness and ECU. Went to jumper 12v+ to the terminal 43 on IPDM (grey red wire) it cranked perfectly but no start / fire. It is as though the immobiliser is preventing it. I havent wired anything to the neutral safety switch on gearbox or grounded it in anyway. Should i do this?? Did diagnostic and it is saying P1614 NATS malfunction. Cannot understand as prior to swap it started everytime first time even having left it with dead battery for a year. no other codes, i dont believe the crank sensor, or camshaft would be a problem. Any thoughts??

    • @DillonSmith1
      @DillonSmith1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Where did you get the 12v source from? A lot of 12v wires are shut off while cranking. Also, I can't confirm that terminal 43 is the correct one on a 350GT, but I would assume so, so that's probably not the issue. You shouldn't have to wire the neutral safety switch to get it to start (I didn't).
      I would try running a jumper wire straight from the battery's positive terminal to your terminal 43 just to see if that works. You'll at least be able to narrow down to if your 12v source is or isn't the issue.

      Hey thanks, glad you enjoyed it. I would just double check your wiring that you did for the clutch interlock/safety switch or bypass. Make sure the 12V source is a consistent one and that all connections are sound. That's pretty much the only thing involved in the swap that could affect the starting (unless the crank sensor was damaged in the process).

      You can definitely tune the stock ECU, if that's what you mean. You can buy pre-flashed ECU's or have someone flash yours if you can go without it for a bit (see UpRev and others like them), or you can get a proper dyno tune for the best results.

    Hello, I have an 06 350Z, which is VQ35DE 5AT, 280hp, I'm going to a single turbo on it, with Transgo kit, I got few questions and since I live in Brazil is veryvery very hard to see people who understand of this car, even on forums like my350z
    My biggest problem is the transmission, I was looking for another transmission to put in, but in Brazil we pay 100% import tax over the product + shipping price, so if 2k usd for the cd009 + 500 shipping I pay 2500 + 2500 usd.
    Usually people wage here is 120 to 200 a month, of course I'm not like those peoples but I'm not rich if I put my money in USD's
    So basically I have 2 questions to know where should I run:
    1- Any other transmission that I could find to swap even if I need adapt few things? Like Nissan Frontier 6MT? Which year could be good? Or any other?
    2- How much power can the 350z 2006 5AT transmission handle with Transgo? I was looking for 500whp or something close to it, you think the transmission with transgo will handle that? Or should I jump for a swap ( but there is not even one 350z transmission to sale in whole Brazil )
    I'm sorry for taking your time but I had nobody else to ask those things...

    • @DillonSmith1
      @DillonSmith1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you just bolt the clutch pedal up using only the two studs from the master cylinder through the firewall, it'll be pretty flimsy and flex quite a bit. I used a piece of flat scrap steel to join the top of the clutch pedal assembly to another solid anchoring point to reduce the flex. I didn't put it in the video since it was pretty impossible to see on camera.

    • @DillonSmith1
      @DillonSmith1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Depends on the transmission you end up getting. You can find one from a 2003-2004 for something like $300, but if you go for a CD008 or CD009 from a 2005-2006 you'll probably end up paying $500+ (stronger transmissions). I can't tell you what it would cost for someone else to do it, but expect to pay for 10-20 labor hours (depending on the shop).

      I kept the 5AT harness, but you'll need to do a bit of simple wiring if you go the same route. The clutch safety switch wiring (shown in my follow-up video) is all that's needed to get the car running and driving. You'll have to do a bit more to get reverse lights and cruise control back. • @DillonSmith1
      @DillonSmith1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Reverse light video isn't going to happen, but it's not complicated. Reverse position switch just needs to be wired into the original trans harness. As for the park/neutral code, have you wired up the PNP (park/neutral position) switch? That switch sends a 12V signal to the ECM whenever the trans is not in park or neutral. If it's not wired, the car thinks its always in park/neutral and can get confused (but shouldn't affect drivability). I'm not doing a video on that either, but once again, not complicated.

      On the switch, one wire needs to be connected to switched power (like the o2 sensor fuse terminal). I got mine from the footwell fuse box since it's close. The other wire needs to run to the fuse box that's right next to the battery. The plug that is in the bottom right hand corner has the wire that you'll need to splice into. That wire is the top left wire of the plug. Go to www.nicoclub.com/FSM/350Z/coupe/2005/pg.pdf and scroll down to page 26. The plug you're looking for is E9 and the wire is 53. Hope this helps, but let me know if you have any other questions! Good luck with the swap. Have fun and take your time.
