First of all I want to thank you for your lifesaving tip. It happened to me tonight, I'm 73 years old, can barely walk, half deaf, can see well at night (I still can drive) and I'm broke. Well, tonight while on an errant the car stop shifting gears, then the devil whispered in my ear, "you can find your answer in TH-cam and boom, there you are with this exelente video, I tried and CHEETOS it works, the tip works, so I saved the money that I don't have, the car running nice and smooth and I'm happy as a dog with two tails. Again thanks for your tip.

One other thing about the check engine light. A bad fuel filler cap, will cause a check engine light to come on. The gas caps rubber gasket might not be sealing the filler tube so the tank wont be under pressure and cause the check engine light to come on. "If your engine light keeps coming on that is'. Thanks very much David for your video. You have solved my 2005 W211 E200K upshift issues. I thought I need to change the transmission oil since its overdue at 60000 km and I did it at 100000km. But still getting a delay upshift. So after watching your magic video. I reset it . And it FIXED> you are the best ...
I had a car scare on my E320 W210. First, I stopped at a light, and when I pressed the accelerator to go, the engine revved up and seem like it was stuck in 4th gear but I limped to the nearest parking lot (no first gear ). I worked the gearshift to reverse then drive then park for a bit. Put car in drive BUT it would not switch to 2nd gear....so I was close to home luckily. Drove rest of way home in first gear. Remembered something about a transmission reset from 4 or 5 years ago. I found this blog and decided to try a reset. Hooray! It worked. Took the E320 out for a test drive, and the transmission shifted through all gears very smoothly. The reset took all of 5 minutes. If I had taken the car to the Mercedes dealership for service, I can guarantee that they would have charged probably $300.
David This video is excellent. I have a Smart forfour and after the battery drained one day and was jumped back into life, I couldn't get any drive in forward or reverse gears and had the following message on my car screen: Brake force distribution inoperative STOP The smart car is also an auto, so I tried your procedure and it wiped the message off and the car was able to start and go back into transmission. Thank you so much. I noticed my car really running bad after getting some bad gasoline. I took it to my mechanic and he changed the plugs and coil packs. The car was still shifting rough. Did the relearn and now my car runs perfect. I was just getting on my computer to look for another car and saw your video.

Thank you. It works much better now. I have a E320 w210 and never did this proceduce in 8 years. All maintenance and oil, filter changes but never the reset or relearn procedure was done. I used the W S switch but not this relearn procedure, and now I feel like having a new car much better and smooth response. Thanks a lot!!!
I must say thank you - along with everyone else. And the post about the S500 being superior warms my heart. I'm driving one, a 2006 that has more than 300 thousand miles on it; essentially, it's maintenance free. Yes, I add oil and antifreeze when instructed to do so. I really love my Mercedes Benz S500 4Matic. Thanks again !
The way I understood it was (and I may be wrong, I don't know a ton about this) but that the transmission is in adaptive learning continuously. Meaning, it is essentially "learning" all of the time anyway. It should 'adapt' to your driving habits over time. However, what this does is kind of reset that learning "data set", so to speak, which kind of accelerates the smoothing out of the transmission, opposed to waiting for it to catch up. So, it's not that the transmission stops learning at a point, it's that the input data gathered is cleared and has no further affect on your the current condition of the transmission. This is why they say that it needs a number of shifts (I've heard 40 too) because there needs to be 'some' input data to adapt to. Further recommendation would be to drive it for a little while after you reset it according to your typical driving pattern. I believe that's why you say that it gets better over time, because the data set becomes more averaged and gets closer and closer to your driving style. If your driving style changes from month to month or week to week, then resetting is where you'll notice the most difference. Anyway, that's kind of what I gathered from a non-technical background. :)
Hey guys I'm i live in England , anyway I drove to Birmingham from my destination and back 150 miles and I juddered all the way I've done what you said and bingo its reset thank you so much
Thanks for the video, this worked on my 1998 CLK320, the transmission is shifting normally again.... i didn't even know the CLK320 had an "adaptive learning" transmission, but apparently it does. Saved me a trip to the mechanic.
There we have it. Excellent, it is said that this need to be done after you change the fluid in the box. And that you need that star computer hooked up, i suspected there was another way!
Works. Just bought a 2006 S350, mint shape but automatic upshifting was not smooth and was slow to shift up. Tried this simple reset and it worked great, first time. Upshifts now as it should correct timing and smooth.
I was feard when my W211 start jerking during slow acceleration... here i am and will do what you adviced.. thank you for your sharing... love from Singapore
Unfortunately, diagnostics for afar is extremally difficult. What you describe sounds like an engine problem. The easy fix could be spark plugs but an inspection before the work is done would be the best thing to do. The transmission is notorious for fluid to leak into the electrical connection and causing problems like you describe. I hope the repair turns out to be something simple like I described.
I disconnected the battery on my 97 C280 only to find the sun roof sticking and not operating as it should, and the transmission was hanging on in first and second gear. After i did a reset on both everything works fine. Thank you for the info.
After having the the transmission lines replaced yesterday on our ML320 we noticed the rpms would not adjust down to a normal rate when driving on the freeway. The repair shop found your video post and it did the trick. A day later and it's doing the same and also dropping out of gear on road travel. We're like to shifting into 4 and 3 drive settings to slow the down when approaching stops. Should we NOT do this until the car relearns?
doing it to mine at the moment, 12:13 am CST, Chicago traffic is playing hell, sometimes I like to stomp it at the lights, but most of the miles out on the car is out on the interstates. which is where it absolutely rules...
Henry, Here is what I found. My starter battery was going out, this is the battery up front in, the engine compartment. Then I also load tested the battery in the back and it said it needs to be replaced due to the amperage being to low. Long story short, that tranny reset/ learn more works. My batteries being low and 1 bad caused this other issue. After replacing both, all worked fine.
thank you!! I just tried with a 2001 E320 and it worked very well. After replacing the battery, my car was running in 2 gear and sometime at stop lights it was not running at all. Now it runs smooth and shifts very well. I still have an engine light on, so I am looking for a solution about it. Thanks.
Really good advice for Cl 500- 2003...like new again, smooth changes up and down ...you saved me a lot of money and aggression... Thank you very much.... do u have any more tricks..?? Lol
I have a ML 320 CDI W 164 and it has the same gear system... what surprise me is that it is true, if you stay in highway for a little while and then you go in the traffic the shifting is not matching your need... I was thinking that MB should have switch on which youselect what type of behavior you want... AUDI it does.. MB just keep the adaptive mode of the previously drive mode... quite strange... anyway... MB didn't learn nothing from the long history and I have find out that all the cars with 7G has the same problem.. .good luck to all of us
Seen a couple of other videos on the subject and everyone says that after removing the key, do NOT do anything for a few minutes - no opening doors, turning on anything - just stay put for a few minutes. Also no one has suggested to repeat the exercise every so often. Really confused now - help !!!! Can it be done even if there are no obvious signs of transmission mis-behaviour?
Thank you for your comment. Of course, this will cause no issues if you do not have shifting problems. This puts the transmission in relearn mode not reset - if there is such a thing. I think that waiting in the car is a bit much. Without MB Star to prove it, my opinion is that opening the door, getting out, and closing the door does not prevent blanking the shift history for a relearn as I am quite sure this works for me and I get out of the car all the time after performing this procedure..
I don't know why this guy say "Relearn mode" It sets the trans back to factory default like the day it drove off the manufacturing floor. So it is a reset. So...being an adaptive driving style transmission of course it will learn how it is driven.
Well, keep in mind this relearned mode only works on the Mercedes Benz W220 S class, as the other models may not have a button under the gas accelerator.
Your video is clear and specific. Which year and model did you demonstrate this procedure on? I just bought my first MB and am going to try this after i get a couple of small items taken care of.
@@marioosa Not sure. That is a different transmission for that year model but, this is a no harm, no foul procedure if you want to try it. If it does not work then your issue will remain unchanged. If it does work then that is great.
This is a transmission reset which puts the setting back to the basic factory setting. The the feature that you are erasing is what was learned over time.
I am no longer 100% sure of who I called and talked to but, I think, and again I am not 100% sure I called European Autowerks in Temecula, CA. Also note that was 8 years ago so there might be a complete change in personnel from then until now. Good Luck and I hope they can help you. Transmissions are a Beast and Mercedes is the King of Complication.
I prefer my trans to shift a little firmly, lasts longer, less slippage ... easier on it, plus, being in Chicago and doing most of my miles at high speed I crazy traffic, let's just say, she gets to stretch her legs. it's fast shifting, it's firm. your transmission will actually last longer with a firm shift is the moral of the story.
Dave my 2003 e320 gear shift is sized ..i think because of a SBC or brake switch..but looking for the reset button in the center console space ..I can't seem to find the hole to push a pen to reset and unlock..where is the access hole..thanks ..John
Sorry, I do not know about that symptom. Could be that the clutch plates have worn out. Sometimes diagnostics is free in some shops if you just wanted to see if your looking at a repair or replacement.
@@A_Renaissance_Man Whew! Thanks. My Mercedes has been sitting in my garage for two weeks since doing that transmission reset, and I was ready to convert the registration to non-op or sell it for parts.
I just change the value body in February this year and now I am experiencing my 08, clk350 benz straining to move in gear. is anyone had or having this problem, I will appreciate your assistance? thanks,
I have a 99 Mercedes S class, a 320 petrol engine. but have some problems with the automatic gearbox if I start the car and switch it to its D or R, it does it very neatly and also drives smoothly without any problem. but sometimes when I park somewhere and come back and want to put it in D it thumps and won't shift into D. then I also only see the "P" on the screen and it just won't go. then i have to drive him in his 1. then I turn it off, then on again, then off again, then on again. and then I can just switch back to his D or R. What could be the cause?
Sometimes the electrical connector to the transmission becomes corroded when water gets into the connector. This is easy to access and look at. If the connector and the pins look clean then there might be an internal issue if no one has ever messed with the shifter.
I need to find this out also.. there are adjustments. 3 to b exact. 1 on the linkage, 2 there is a small key at the transmission that u can turn to soften or harden the shifting/torque. And 3 on the ignition pump of the diesel there is an adjustment also..not sure if gas has a similar resolution... the kick down switch can get dirty n b in an more aggressive state..clean and lubricating helps .plus at the transmission the kick down there should get the same treatment...
I just did my first 900 miles toad trip with my 06 S430, I was having this exact issue. At times the shifting felt wrong, I had to stop and pull over. Turn the car off for 5 mins, then restart and it was fine again. I’m going to try to do exactly what you said and. See if that helps.
@@chiefbeef2475 my car had to be completely reprogrammed by Mercedes. The computer that controls the transmission which is under the passenger seat had water damage. So I needed a new computer and reprogramming. I spent almost 1,000.00

Thanks. I did not know about that switch. I put a rubber floor mats in my car. I cut out a spot for the bottom of the peddle but let the rest of that area(switch) to be covered by the mat.
This function resets the learn mode and the transmission then shifts in accordance with the pattern seen. The two extremes would be little old lady and drag racer. Now, in the process of the reset to relearn some issues are corrected because, like all software, sometimes it gets off track and a reboot can take care of some issues. This is a no harm, no foul situation. Also, do not change the fluid. Only a disassembly, repair, should involve a fluid change no matter how old the fluid is.
Can you please shed light on why I can move gear shift into all positions on my 2003 ML 500 but it don't actually go into the rear . I did have coils plugs and wires done and battery was disengaged , do you know how to make it come out of manual overdrive or is that even the problem???
There could be any number of reasons the car does not go into gear. Could be electrical, mechanical, or just end of life as 2003 makes the car close to 20 years old and that is a very long time for the transmission. Only a reliable shop can help you with that issue.
My 2014 GLK250 has a box with 2 bolts underneath the gas pedal. Does this mean I don’t have the “button”, or do I need to remove this box to access it?
My apologies for not knowing the details of your vehicle. Somehow, someway your vehicle has the ability to downshift for passing. Activating the downshift while stationary is what is really going on here.
I do not know. I would check the owner's manual and see if there is a "learn" mode. Otherwise I would say no but, this is something you can try without consequences if the procedure does not work.
Hummm ... I don't know how to help you if you don't have a down shift button a.k.a. passing gear down shift. Your mechanic might be able to help if you are having trouble looking behind the pedal yourself.
My Mercedes 2007 C230 suddenly stopped shifting from the first gear. It jerks when I engage the gear and gets stuck at the first gear without shifting. I plugged a scanner and it showed me code P2734.. Pressure control selenoid F electrical. Can this work or should I do a gear servicing?
Be sure to unplug the external electrical connector and look for any liquid. They are notorious for allowing water and oil into the connection. I do not have any advice as to where to go after that. You need to decide whether or not you need a replacement or what other options are available to you.
My nephew jacked my mother's S430 up. It's been stuck in park for a week and 1/2 now. I watched your video and thought I would give it a try. No Bueno! It didn't work. I patiently waited and tried it again and no luck. Looks like we are going to have it towed to a mechanic, nothing else to do. I wish you were here to help.
Thank you for the confidence. This 'trick' only puts the transmission into relearn mode and sometimes that process clears out any 'confusion' that might have been involved in the shift cycle. Sorry for your trouble. I hope your nephew did not cost your mom too much money and time.
I tried too and all jerking while shifting gear is gone! but still I feel some jerking may be thats because of motor mounts or gear mounts needs to replace... any ways thank you.
Actually I do not know what causes these issues. If I even try to be aggressive once, then the transmission goes out of granny mode into insane criminal mode.
@@john8451 Yes it is... 1. Get in and shut the door 2. Turn key to position 2 (right before the start position) DO NOT START THE CAR 3. Press the gas pedal to the floor... past the kick down point... 4. Hold the pedal there for 15 seconds 5. After 15 seconds while foot still planted, turn the key off but do not remove it 6. Release gas pedal. 7. Wait at least 2 minutes while not touching anything in the car, don't open the door even. 8. After the 2 minutes start the car and drive off normally... you should notice a difference in the shift pattern and smoothness.

Thank you so much!!! My wife’s 2003 C230 Kompressor Coupé Rides so smooth!! Thank you!
Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. I do appreciate that.
David Prokity No worries! Your Video helped me a lot!
doing it to mine at the moment, 12:13 am CST, Chicago traffic is playing hell, sometimes I like to stomp it at the lights, but most of the miles out on the car is out on the interstates. which is where it absolutely rules...
Yes sure , good video. As a Benz owner it's important to know all these tips. Thanks
I need a transmission oil change video for 2006 s500 mb would really help
Thanks very much for this video, it worked on my e55 amg..
Also, that would be the "kick down switch" at the bottom of the gas pedal.
Henry,
Here is what I found. My starter battery was going out, this is the battery up front in, the engine compartment. Then I also load tested the battery in the back and it said it needs to be replaced due to the amperage being to low. Long story short, that tranny reset/ learn more works. My batteries being low and 1 bad caused this other issue. After replacing both, all worked fine.
i think my gearbox is broken . but the shifts between the gears working feels amazing now . will do this again if i swap gearbox
Thanks for your advice. And now I feel my 306hp.Thanks
worked for me today. Car wouldn’t start after battery was unplugged. This fixed it. Thanks.
I never feel mine shift at all... so smoooooth!!
Arizona Sky hi so did try the reset
Mine doesn't shift hard.. However good info far as once a month routine .. I didn't know that ... Ty
Buttery smooth!, got it!
Thanks a lot for the video.
I have 99 c230( w202) and it’s not downshifting and upshifting much much better .
Great tip thank you will this work the same if car has been remapped?
Yes the engine computer is seperate from the transmission computer.
Thank you 🤗👍
Thank you.
Really worked thanks
You are welcome.
Your video is clear and specific. Which year and model did you demonstrate this procedure on?
I just bought my first MB and am going to try this after i get a couple of small items taken care of.
2006 S430. Thank you for asking.
@@A_Renaissance_Man
Hi,
Will this work on 2002 W210 E240 as well?
@@marioosa Not sure. That is a different transmission for that year model but, this is a no harm, no foul procedure if you want to try it. If it does not work then your issue will remain unchanged. If it does work then that is great.

Thankyou very much David Prokity Sir! will try on my w221 S550, kind regards
Your welcome. Thank you for taking the time to leave such a nice comment.
Hey David, I have 2010 CLS 350. Is it safe to do ? Hope no side effect 😀
This is a transmission reset which puts the setting back to the basic factory setting. The the feature that you are erasing is what was learned over time.
Good Morning! Just wondering which company you called for the Valve Body service here in SoCal? Thanks!
@@A_Renaissance_Man Gracias!!!
just what I needed

Question: What if after shifting the hand gear the transmission doesn't go in gear then what do we do?
Sorry, I do not know about that symptom. Could be that the clutch plates have worn out. Sometimes diagnostics is free in some shops if you just wanted to see if your looking at a repair or replacement.
What is supposed to happen at the end of the two minutes? Am I supposed to start the engine?
At the end of two minutes, the reset is complete and you can start the engine and drive.
@@A_Renaissance_Man Whew! Thanks. My Mercedes has been sitting in my garage for two weeks since doing that transmission reset, and I was ready to convert the registration to non-op or sell it for parts.
@@TomBleecker Yes, I know what you mean. You still might consider that, haha.

Hopefully someone can help you as I am unfamiliar with the transmission in your vehicle, sorry.
Huge difference on my w215! Thanks

Thanks David!!!! It worked.
Excellent!
If the connector and the pins look clean then there might be an internal issue if no one has ever messed with the shifter.
how long to wait after you did it first time?
Can this be done on a 95 w140?
I have this problem. Did it work for you?
Actually no. I had the car serviced and found out I needed to replace the conductor plate and the tcm computer.
@@carsgolfcigars how much did that costs my car goes into limp mode where it gets stuck in a gear and I have to restart it

should not. only the key is on. not the motor.

Thank you for sharing the info i will try this today . 👍
4:19 that's my 'ish!...
Thanks. I did not know about that switch. I put a rubber floor mats in my car. I cut out a spot for the bottom of the peddle but let the rest of that area(switch) to be covered by the mat.
Will this somehow fix hard shifting and sudden downshifts (rarely)? And if not it won't cause any harm
@@A_Renaissance_Man thank you so much appreciated! And best of luck with your channel, subscribed👍
I wonder if that is most likely your Conductor Plate... Which if so you'll have to replace due to the input rpm sensor having issues
Does this also work on a W220 S500 Pre-Facelift?
When? Why I must reset transmission .my vehicle can't run over 100 km on the low hill course. Even way no problem. Can I solve it by reseting?
You think Turing it off for awhile and restarting will help
What about 1985 300d Mercedes can I do same thing you explain my transmission is shift so quick
I do not know. I would check the owner's manual and see if there is a "learn" mode. Otherwise I would say no but, this is something you can try without consequences if the procedure does not work.
So what if my accelerator never clicks, even when I push it to the floor? I don’t think mine has a button.
Hummm ... I don't know how to help you if you don't have a down shift button a.k.a. passing gear down shift.
Your mechanic might be able to help if you are having trouble looking behind the pedal yourself.
Mine doesn’t have it either. :(. 2004 ML 350 4 Matic SUV

Does it work if your car does not go in reverse?

I patiently waited and tried it again and no luck. Looks like we are going to have it towed to a mechanic, nothing else to do. I wish you were here to help.
Thank you for the confidence. This 'trick' only puts the transmission into relearn mode and sometimes that process clears out any 'confusion' that might have been involved in the shift cycle. Sorry for your trouble. I hope your nephew did not cost your mom too much money and time.

shifting to neutral on its own from reverse ?
Mine shifting to 1 on its own from Drive??! Wtf 😳
My car acts like it goes to neutral sometimes, shut it off for a bit and it will go for a while. Will this procedure help?

This procedure sets the transmisdion into relearn mode. The procedure is also one that will not cause any problems if it does not work.
Do you know what causes these issues,I had the downshift and up shift problem a reset helped it but don't want to have future issues.
Regards Robert.
Actually I do not know what causes these issues. If I even try to be aggressive once, then the transmission goes out of granny mode into insane criminal mode.
