Mercruiser Bravo 3 Hydraulic Trim Hose Replacement (Part numbers are in the Details)

  • In this video I replaced the hydraulic hoses that control the trim on our Bravo 3 outdrive. Here is a list of parts used.
    The part numbers are as follows:
    #864589 Starboard Hydraulic hose $72.42
    #864588 Port Hydraulic hose $72.75
    (2) #99904Q Stainless Hydraulic hoses $ 62.92 each
    #861128 Hydraulic hose $92.42
    #861127 Hydraulic hose $90.83
    #8MO137703 Manifold assembly. Didn't remember the price but was around $40.00
    Hydraulic hose sealant (Permatex #54540 ) on Amazon $29.00. (super expensive)
    (12) Coors Light $ market price

    I blew one of these lines (rookie mistake - didn't purge air when replacing an end cap).. Now once I realized it popped under the motor and saw fluid I was really upset thinking I would need to bring my boat to a mechanic for a motor to be lifted which means at LEAST one month of downtime.. Luckily I came across your video! Thank you for this!!!

      Thanks for the feedback… it’s a pain to do but saves lots of downtime and possibly pulling the engine like you said. Glad you found it helpful!

      @@RandomlyAwkward1 I also cut off the mercathode to make the installation easier. Do you see any difference - do you see more corrosion? I'm now thinking if I should put the mercathode back - I'm storing at a high and dry storage at my marina. But if there is no difference - I would not bother

    Man, I don't know if Bravo is much different from Alpha 2, but I changed the gray and black hoses today, and it took me about 10 minutes. I did not need to pull any wire or cable. I just disconnected the two lines from the pump, went to the rear, laid on my back, disconnected the 4 ram lines, then removed the anode chunk and the two nuts retaining the block. Then pulled the block down, held it with a channel lock pliers, remove the two lines from the top side, and using my finger, held the black line up, while pulling the rear, gray line, down and out, then using my finger to support the front of the black line connector, pulled it down and out. Then I took the black, front line, stuck it into the hole, and using the "proctologist finger lift" , held the front end of the black connector up, and shoved the black line in, then did the same with the rear, gray line. Nothing to it. Inside, the lines were simply pulled over to the pump side. Total time out and in, 10 minutes, no weird coat hangers, now cables, no nothing. I did, however, cover both ends of both lines with black tape so nothing got into them going. Once positioned, I just attached a new block, applied thread lock sealant (Permatex hydraulic), then Permatex RTV to the gasket, both sides, set it gasket, set the new block, and nutted it up. Nothing to it, man.

      Wow, I wish mine was that straightforward. Possibly because it is a Bravo 3, possibly the style of boat, but man what a pain mine was.. I’m glad your experience was “smooth and unremarkable” in proctologist terms!

      Hope it helps… it’s a PITA and you really need two people to fish the hydraulic lines through. Just do one at a time… let me know whether or not you fixed it or shot the boat!

    Nice video I have A question. I’m trying to pass tru the hoses and it’s being complicated. Any sugestión

      Thank you for the comment. The hose replacement was difficult, but I found that I had to pass one hose at a time through the transom because both of them at the same time would not work. Also, I used some very stiff wire wrapped around the hose and taped to it to pull on one end, while my wife and chief mechanic pushed on the other. Also, the hose that has the 90° bend in the fitting that connects to the bottom of the trim pump seemed to be particularly difficult and if I had to replace them again, I would not use the hose with the 90° fitting, I would just have a straight hose made. Just do them one at a time and pass them through the bottom of the outdrive through the little inspection plate.

      Thank you… we pulled them from the top out through the engine hatch one at a time. Pulled new ones from top through the bottom of the outdrive, also individually with stiff wire.

    Wonder how you blead it? Did you crack one sent of the braded lines into the cylinder and run the pump letting the air out?

      Since I suspected there was water mixed in with the oil, I took the cylinders off and put them in a drain pan. I removed the hoses and cycled them slowly back-and-forth to purge all of the oil/water mixture out of the cylinders. I did the same thing with the Reservoir and pump. I then filled the pump with 10W-30 oil and cycled everything back-and-forth to purge out all of the water, reconnected everything and then cycled the trim up and down several times, and it worked all the bubbles out.

      I got the hoses back through one at a time, and I used a long piece of wire, tied and taped to each end of the hose to pull it forward and backward through the transom. You really need two people. One to push, and one to pull in. The hardest part is just getting the hydraulic fittings through the base of the bell housing of the outdrive.

      Yes. It’s really a pain to do. It would be much easier if the fittings weren’t 90 degree bends but just straight.

      To be honest, I took a guess. I figured I had a 50-50 shot at it. I was wrong, so I just switched the hydraulic lines as they connected to the pump and it only took a minute.

      @@RandomlyAwkward1 I looked at the pump today where the hose are connected , the outlet are marked up UP on the left and DN on the right as you look at the pump

      @@johnsivyer4570 Yes I saw that, but by the time I had the hoses blindly routed through the transom and connected to the drive, I didn’t remember which was up and which was down so I took a shot at it and was wrong, but just switched them and it was fine.
