This is a great series. Evinrude was to the marine industry as GM and Ford are to the automotive industry. It's a shame they are no longer around.

The Evinrude G2 was the best outboard ever made. Its a shame what happened. The few growing pains they had were sorted out fairly early. And allot of the problems were do to improper dealer install

Dad had a 93 Johnson 140 on a lund tyee. He only had one problem after 25+ years and probably thousands of hours pulling skiers and tubers and cruising the river. Lots of good memories with Johnson/Evinrude, wish they could have made it work.

I had a 1998 Intruder 175 for 15 years and it ran flawlessly until the end. I choose to swap out the 1999 Ficht for the 1998 leftover Intruder on my new 1999 Champion. Nothing but good things to report with my old Evinrude Intruder.

Never had one. But your right Andy, not making the 4 stroke was their demise. The other ugly was they blamed the US shut down. When everyone one else saw great increase on boat & motor sales. Evinrude had great escape plan.

Was the 3rd owner of a Johnson 76 model 85hp. Never had to do anything but change the oil in the lower unit. Probably had over 1000 hrs. Went to a fast strike 150, replaced a power pack but no other issues. Have had a 92 evinrude 90hp for 10 years, starts every time. Bought a 2021 z185 with a Mercury pro xs 150. Maybe u can help me. I have a 2017 ranger 518c with 200 HO etech. I love the motor and I would have to say they are much quieter and much more fuel efficient than a mercury 2 stroke in its time. Only problem I’m having is at high rpm or when running high end top speed I’m having issues with the hub plastic bushing melting n spinning down. This has happened twice. Can u tell me why? It only happens when at high end speeds. Thanks

Running ok, but now starts right up charges the battery for 10 min and then no charge. Working for a J/E dealer since 1977 and being a BRP Platinum Dealer for 15 years I've seen a lot of ups and downs with OMC/BRP. '90s-2000s carbureted engines were at the top. 60 degree 90-175hp and 90 degree 200-250hp were just tanks. They ran, they ran hard and yeah the sucked fuel but they ran. Any time I ever saw one of those motors fail was water in the oil tank and it just popped a jug. Half the time we resleeved it, new pistons and sent it on the way and they're still running. DI/FICHT is where things got rough. OMC went through a lot changes. The biggest when Charlie Strang implemented a corporate clause stating anyone on the board was to be capped out at 70 years of age. He was the first to go and the rest is history from there. FICHT/bad management sent OMC into a downward spiral and lead to their bankruptcy. When BRP came around they did a great job clearing up the bugs through out the years on the G1s. We sold the crap out of those motors. When the G2 came out I started to see all of the FICHT red flags. DPS motors and modules constantly failing, welch plugs rotting/leaking spraying water all over the block , flywheel magnets letting go taking out stators, reed petals blowing a part and the covers on the exoskeletons don't seal worth a damn. And all the engineers kept saying " You don't have to take the covers off for 5 years" Warranty flat rate gave us 3 hours to replace a DPS motor. An engineer came out to our shop to do one "in the field" because they've only done it at the Science Drive plant. Took him 2 days. As they slowly started taking away HP options from the G1 forcing people to buy G2 we had a lot of unhappy customers. G2 warranty and technical help totally fell apart and once covid hit that was their excuse to fold because of G2 failures. Dealers were sent an email to be read on a Wednesday morning saying there will be no more motor productions. BRP head honchos called sales reps and field techs after dinner to say they no longer had a job and if they had a corporate provided phone it was shut off that night. How do you do that to people? At the flip of a switch "Evinrude. First in Outboards" is done. I'm still baffled.

I feel staying 2 stoke made them unique the power to weight ratio is great! Mercury went from making supercharged I6 Verado’s to try and keep the power weight ratio to the big V8’s now that 2 strokes are dead. I own one and I love it! But I seriously would’ve considered a G2 if it still existed in 2021 when I bought my Alumacraft. The 2>4 posters at the dealer were cool! They kept 2 strokes around longer than anyone else. They needed to work Kinks out before selling the Ficht for sure I agree that’s what killed em.

How about shooting a video covering the continuous issues that have plagued the Optimax. That engine has had a gremlin living in it since the day it was released in 98. Injectors, coils, ECM,s, air compressors, gearcases and on and on and on.

So I gotta chime in….my 97/98 Johnson is solid. Just had mechanic run compression, 100%. I must admit it doesn’t like idle scanning as much as it likes balls to the wall wot! It will idle all day long. I will launch shore bank it walk away and park trailer 10-15 later it’s idling. Just not in its happy place.
Mine is a VRO delete after my mechanic suggested the delete for longevity and it’s solid. Love a honest mechanic.
I looked at a etec powered boat and my mechanic said run….lol! Gotta love a good honest relationship with your mechanics suggestion’s.
Been looking for a new boat seen a lot of G2 powered boats on the market. I have been wanting to get away from 2S…., but I fish with a lot of guys and pleasure boat with others that have a G2 and love them with no issues. One guy I tournament fish wish took his xs 2S off and put on a used G2 and loves it.
I read thread people trashing the G2 because they pulled the plug and no one really understands the warranty agreement and process.
Can you enlighten everyone. The way I understand the warranty new/transferred; was mercury will do all the warranty service on the G2 and BRP has more than enough parts to fulfill.
It was my understanding that evinrude traded all their outboard engine development technology too Mercury in exchange they continue to oversee all warranty on the G2.
Brp is a massive company that owned cannam.
I cant imagine they not honoring their warranty
I too think they should have jumped early into 4 stroke. They would have been ahead of Mercury.

Older Evinrudes/Johnsons are all I run. I can't afford anything new. I have had great luck with them.
I pulled a (possibly early-mid 80s) 70hp 3 cylinder Johnson from the woods. It was unused for at least 12 years. I connect a gas tank and a battery and it fires right up no problem. Did a water pump even though it appeared fine. The damn thing still runs a year later. Absolutely refuses to die. Same with their 40hp twins. Indestructable.
Evinrude pulling the plug deeply saddened me. I wonder if the name will ever return, but hopefully not on the "underboard". That thing looks like trouble.
Now I will say the horizontal variable port powerhead it uses would make a pretty sick inboard or snowmobile engine. One could only hope.

    Hi Andy,
Absolutely love your channel. Such valuable information!
I have a 2016 Stratos 186VLO with a G1 150 Etec HO. Running a 22p Racker and getting 62mph. Has been an excellent motor for the 6yrs I’ve owned it. I’ve heard the 150 Etec’s have far less issues vs the 200-250hp. Has that been your experience as well?
Pls keep up the awesome work!

I have a 18 ft butt cat with 2 x 90 hp e tec's 2010 models. Still on my boat and going strong. My late father had 2x 40 hp Evinrude on his 15 ft deepsea boat. They were 1968 models and they ran for ever. I have had only good experiences with Evinrude. Such a pity they are not made anymore. There was nothing wrong with the e tec technology. BRP should just have itoned out the small issues with the G1 big hp motors. Should not have introduced the G2 until the issues with the G1 was sorted properly. Up to the 115hp they are pretty reliable. I love mine.

I had 1995 70 Hp evinrude and my friend has his fathers 1970’s era 65 Hp Evinrude.
When I recently sold my boat I did look hard at etec. What scared me was the availability of parts.
Luckily, I went with a Tohatsu which in my area has a large dealer network. A few months later Bombardier announced Evinrude was done. It is sad, but when bombardier took over Evinrude the writing was on the wall.

So ... what was so wrong with the 2stroke? What wasn't at least comparable to its 4stroke counterpart? What if Evinrude put their 2strokes on a diet and brought the weight down to where it should have been, then how would the e-tec compare to its 4stroke competition?

    • @TeamMarineService
      @TeamMarineService  ปีที่แล้ว +1

You need all of the latest tech to make a big horsepower 2 stroke that is clean and gets relatively good mpg where you just need a basic no frills 4 stroke to do the same.

    • @450kman
      @450kman ปีที่แล้ว

@@TeamMarineService Speaking of the bread and butter 150hp range, the (I believe it's generally referred to as the gen2) etec must have possessed what was required as it was competitive with 4stroke emissions and fuel usage, while weighing ~40pounds less than the lightest 4stroke. Bombardier should have put the gen2 on a diet instead of fattening it up for slaughter. A lot of us butt heavy tin boat guys and shallow water runners, need a lighter weight option than the current heavy 4strokes.

I have a 2004 Johnson 30hp tiller 2 stroke and its a bullet proof motor I have it on a 1648 Lowe I walleye fish and duck hunt with a pop up blind in the fall. From temps in the middle teens 15-20F that the Bank Clock Gutenberg IA it still starts in 2-3 pulls yes pull start and it easy. I have had this boat on South Dakota’s Lake Francis Case Reservoir to Duck hunting the Missouri River and the Mississippi River in Northwest IA. I wanted 2 stroke for it’s reliability in cold temps. Speed is as fast as I want to go in the Dark of night. Loaded duck hunting low 20’s mph 12 pitch prop and fishing loaded light fishing I get 29mph 14 pitch prop.
Only thing I have had break is the tilt trim bracket but I was going through 3inch ice. Now I call season over at 2 inches for Duck hunting.

I'd like to buy an Evinrude E-TEC 25 for my Boston Whaler Sport 11 and to install remote controls for the boat. I currently have this array with a still kicking Chrysler 20 HP Model No. 2003 from 1969 -which is a glorified 15 HP-. Dad had a fishing cottage in Costa Rica in the mouth of the Tárcoles River in the 1970's. He seldomly used this motor and I have put good use to it! So this is the conundrum: will I be able to repair and source parts for this motor as I have with my Chrysler 20 Hp?

Here’s my experience since 2009 with Evinrude. My dad was an Evinrude guy, so when I started with my boat buying life I went Evinrude. Got an Etec early, had some programming issues, oil injection issues. Went big with a 2017 250G2 on my Ranger Bass boat…….great motor for a year then issues, issues, issues. Lower unit, power head, ESC modules. Now it’s back in the shop now for yep, ESC issue. Now it’s on my dime. Now it’s parts distribution issues, oil is over the top expensive. A Yamaha SHO 250 might be coming from Santa this year. Evinrude should of just fixed the issues and went 4 stroke and went the direction of the rest of the crowd.

I have a 98 175hp ocean runner ficht motor. I care for it like my child. Expensive oil, premium gas service once a year and that sucker used to blow power packs every 50 hours. I eventually opened a power pack and repaired it on my own since then had 0 issues with it. Had some EMM problems with some cold soldering joins but they were easy to repair with a soldering iron. I even soldered the fuel pump MOSFET while in the middle of the sea once. In the end it blew up with 400h on the clock. Overall it wasn't a good experience and eventually this experience was what saved me from the mistake of repowering with an etec g2. Nowadays I am looking for money to get a 200 Suzuki and wave my problems good bye

What about the OMC VRO oil injection system. I bought a new 1994 Evinrude 90 hp. Had it rebuilt after after only 6 years of average use because of scorned pistons. 5 years later, scorned pistons again. Junked it and got a new Yamaha 90 hp 2 stroke. The 90 Yamaha is still going strong with only minor issues. I know a lot of OMC owners that had the same issue and never bought an Evinrude or Johnson again.

They could have been the only company offering a clean 2 banger and integrated with the rotax engine on an outboard.
