  • OLD TECH vs NEW TECH: OUTBOARDS! (WHO WINS???)
In the great battle between 2 Stroke and 4 Stroke we are pulled in even deeper. Does the Old Technology of the Carb'd and Early EFI motors beat the New Tech of today's 4 Stroke Outboards? Our comparison is side by side and to assume that they are both brand new....Which motor has more Performance, Who has better Reliability? Comment below if you are a fan of the old school outboards of the past or if you've stepped into the future and bought yourself a new high tech 4 Stroke Outboards.

Our '82 Mariner 150 still pushes our '84 Champion 18' along at 60 mph at 5500 RPM. I never and I mean NEVER have to worry about mosquitos or other insects. Regular service & maintenance still has 120-125 compression on all cylinders. She has more hours on her than Father Time. Our set up is still the oldest I have seen at any launch ramps, 41 years old. I am expecting a call from the Smithsonian at any time.

I have a 1998 Yamaha OX66 200 serial number 000322 with 210 original hours. It starts on half a crank every time and runs like maniac. Fresh plugs, clean O2 sensor, good fuel pump diaphragms and running quality oil seems to be the ticket. The new stuff is amazing but it’s hard to beat those old Yammies.

my Ficht Ram 175 has been good to me too! few minor issues, but that's normal for a 20 year old motor. One thing I can't figure out is that it bogs down when it is trimmed all the way down at idle, i just have to bring it up half way on the trim gauge and it runs normal again. Diehard American! Yamaha tech since 1987. Picked up Evinrude 1999 right before the (ficht) bankruptcy. BRP did ok with the Etec. Then oops! G2. Don't need to tell what I went through and continue to go through. Breaks my heart to see this crap! We are America and we have the ability to build the most awesome shit on the planet.
Yamaha came to us in 1984 with the 220 hp V6 Special, in 1987 it became the 225 hp V6 Excel. Carbureted 2 stroke with oil injection, a CPS, TPS, Temp sensor and Knock Sensor! State of the art. You almost didn't need the choke to start it!
Evinrude countered with the VRO (very risky oiler}. Kaboom!
At least mercury had the common sense to use the same mikuni gear driven oil pump!
Had some Etecs go a lot of hours (6000 +).
Loved the old two strokes if they didn't dump half of their unburnt gas and oil into the ocean/lake!
By the way the G2 didn't make BRP go bankrupt, just made them stop production of outboards. However, if they did not stop production of the G2, they would have!
Just drove a 2023 coyote mustang! Holy Crap. Awesome. My Dad's Corvette! Amazing! Why can't we do the same with outboards. Beyond me!

I think the initial cost savings make the difference. Mercury has the 2 stroke down pretty well before they stopped making them and released the conehead.

@@flyfishmerc The 75-175hp Mercury 4 strokes seem to be very reliable, most of the issues now are with the 200 and up v8s or the 60hp and down Chinese motors. If you go with a 150 get the pro XS for sure or go with the 175 pro XS.

Thanks. The dealer I’m taking to about the 150 ProXS said he can’t recall ever seeing one come in with a problem. Like you said it’s the 200-250’s that have some growing pains. Thanks for the feedback

Suzukis are mostly solid. We sold them for a number of years in the 80s and 90s. They had minor problems in the early years but as of late, they are much improved.

I had a 92 60hp Evinrude. I ran it from 1996 to 2019 and replaced a regulator rectifier. That was it. The warning horn corroded and I didn't realize it was out of oil. I ended up seizing it up. I replaced it with a 290hour 2012 75hp etec. I spent almost 4000 getting that motor to run right which it did for 2 years then the screws all came out of the reeds and wiped the motor out. 😢

I cant agree with you on the opti pops. Every single optimax for sale that has 300 hours somehow is on its 2nd or 3rd powerhead. Its honestly the only engine i see that with. The odd etec here and there but optis all the time unless it has 50 hours on it

I have a 2015 150HO Etec on my Stratos. I agreed with you on the disaster Evinrude became with so many issues.
Everyone I talk to about the 150HO say it’s the exception to the rule and the small blocks are pretty much bullet proof.
Only issue I’ve had so far is a capacitor fail in year 2 (warranty) Nothing else. What’s your experience with that year/model. Would appreciate the feed back.

  • @Trump985

I wouldn’t call the Etecs junk. I worked for a boat rental company that ran them and they lasted 5,000 plus hours. We bought new engines every 3 or 4 years so I can’t say how long they are good for? I replaced one that had over 7,000 hours and still ran like a raped ape! We ran a few dozen of them and I never saw a powerhead failure. The charging system part of the ECUs, injectors and the occasional sensor went bad from time to time but nothing major. Compared the the Yamaha and Mercury 2 strokes we bought (you were lucky to get 2500 hours out of one of them before they blew a powerhead) these were great engines. Sure parts are an issue now and I certainly wouldn’t recommend anyone gets one today.
