The Ugly. 2017 f150 with 800 hrs corroded a hole through exhaust guide plate. A known issue that yamaha have admitted to behind closed doors but will not take any acountability for when asked publicly instead blaming on over propping.
Dad bought a new Ranger 692 Fisherman with a 150 Yamaha ProV and on the opening day morning the lower unit chewed itself up. First time I ever saw tears in my dad’s eyes. Took it to a dealer in I’Falls. Yamaha redeemed itself, put a new lower unit on an airplane on Sunday, installed Monday morning and back on the water that afternoon. 29 years later not a single issue. Had a F115 on my first boat, 1850 Fish Hawk, ran perfect for the 19 seasons I had it, never choked it to start, always started after 4-5 cranks even first time out each season.

I'm a retired truck mechanic and it's so easy to work on. Changing the water pump is supper easy. I enjoy watching your videos keep them coming. 😁👍
If it makes oil it was either not broken in correctly or it is idling toooo long, check the downloads they will tell you everything. 4.2 use plasma honed cylinder walls. Do the break in exactly as Yamaha says to do is critical for proper ring seating. Things I've learned in my last 2 years taking classes at Yamaha Marine University.
The first yammy sho I ever had made oil. The only way to fix it, that we found, was to put in on a big lake and run from one end to the other as fast as it will go. When that engine got nice and hot it seated the rings and never made a drop of oil to the day we sold it
New v6’s make oil from gas by passing the rings. From what I was told by my local Yamaha mechanic was to trim the engine down and run it hard. Will help seat the rings quicker.
On oil dilution: Improper break-in, excessive idling, too low octane fuel are the main causes. There’s a handful of maintenance due issues that can make the symptoms worse as well. Most of the original list can be resolved with YIEC, and a couple hours hard running. On the maintenance side, a pair of thermostats and regular usage of Ring Free and conditioner usually resolves it.
Your story about your dad in that boat is awesome. It’s just like my Dad. I think there is an age you get to that you unlock that ability. I’m looking forward to that outlook.

Little 3hp 2 stroke here. Late ‘80s or early ‘90s. Super reliable as long as you don’t let it sit unused too long. Pilot jets are just so small and too easily plugged and will muck with the idle. Beats the heck out of paddling, lol.
I have owned three Yamaha outboards. My first Yamaha was a 40hp Mariner, made by Yamaha. Then, a Yamaha C60. Currently, I own a 2020 year model 4.2l SHO. Always had good reliability.
What we do with the SHO‘s it’s all about heat and running the living crap out of them. If they were not run hard out of the box you’ve got to deglaze the cylinders and we use Yamaha internal engine cleaner procedure, double up on ring free, then back to lake for 30 plus miles of wide open without any breaks. Doing that will set the rings on 90+ percent of them in our area.

Well I finally subscribed to Team Marine. I wasn’t going to because of the hate that’s given to Evinrude lol! But you guys grew on me I kinda get a kick out whatever his name is. I’m not ready to give a thumbs up yet though lol! 😆
One area not mentioned on the Yamaha's which is ashame was a major issue was the exhaust corrosion for the F225's, some F250's. Lots of customers having to each new powerheads and Yamaha not making good on replacements for the factory defect. They did I hear eventually offer discounted parts, but still in the several thousand $$ range to fix them.
I fixed mine from making oil by switching to conventional oil, change it at 50hrs now, I change the thermostat every 100 hours, and i clean the pressure control valve every time I change the oil. The oil was the biggest help. Mine made oil since I first bought it.
The newest ugly is the trim switch possibly energizing ignition coils even with key off and igniting any unburned fuel in the cylinders and blowing the intakes off the side of the block possibly starting a fire
My Old Toyota has 315,000 miles on it, runs like a top, if Toyota made an Outboard it will be bullet proof. ha. An older person I used to know had 50 HP Yamaha and he ran it all the time. Bump the key switch it would fire up. Best Outboard in the world. Guy by me just had his 2001 Yamaha 225 I think it is, blow up.. I told him them old 2 strokers run the best right before they blow up. ha. great video. Keep em going!! PS not a Volkswagen fan but they run well.
The yama-HAMMA! Totally abused a 2007 25 2 stroke on the river, broke the exhaust housing multiple times but the lower unit survived(Rockhopper FTW). Luckily they are easy to work on, replaced with a housing from an 1989 model, she's still rippin around hitting logs and rocks. Have had two precision blend 70's and they were tough as well.

To my understanding the oil making issue is due to the rings not seating well because of easy running during break in. Have heard if you run them WOT for a considerable amount of time even after break in the rings will seat correctly and quit letting the fuel bypass the rings and “make oil”.
Yam mechanic here, from what I've been told here the oil making is a result of people over filling because Yams are a little difficult to get an accurate level reading or it's being over loaded and run to hard. I would add as a bad that the mid 2000s 150s had balancer issues and even tho they have fixed the balancer if the engine over heats a little or the prop is hit the balancer can come apart. If that happens and not caught in time your engine is dead.
I am purchasing a 175sho after just blowing up my merc at 900hrs . I was scared to watch because i didn't wana find out the Yamaha is a pile but i feel even better purchasing it now . Thanks for the knowledge.
The making oil is a result of the break in process and lack of temp to set the rings according to my dealer. We went out and drove it HARD. Big long run where we stopped and fished for a couple of hours to let it heat cycle. Ran the whole way back. Never made another drop after that. This was when the motor was new and only just outside of its break in period.
The SHO’s that make oil are the engines that were not broke in correctly. If the engine is not broke in by taking it out, running a full tank of gas through it. And not by running it for 20 minutes to the next spot. The only way a 4 stroke can make oil is because the rings aren’t seated right, they need to get it hot enough to seat. In break in you need to load the boat down, trim all the way down, make it work. There ya go 🙂
@@TeamMarineService I was going to say the world but I don’t want you to get too big a ego! Thanks for the great work and content your information is really helpful
@@waylonlevinshmm you are leave out tohatsu and Honda. What is in the back of coast guard skiffs, Honda and Yamaha. No black motors. All these are pretty decent for consumers, need to look at warranty though. Yamaha and mercury offer 1 year for comercial applications, not sure what Suzy does. I have to deal with Yamaha and mercury corp for support, bleh typical corporate run around. Local dealer is more important
All of the making oil issues I have seen through my client list involves low operating rpm with light load. Under loaded high rpm applications where the oil temp gets above 175 degrees I do not see the making oil situation.
I have a 2021 Yamaha VF150 SHO and ive worried about the low RPM issues but i run heavy loads every time. Most of my lakes around are “NO WAKE” lakes. I travel to a few lakes that i can run full speed but not that often. Im about ready to perform the 20HR service, i sure hope my engine will perform well in the future since i have really not pushed it very hard in the first 20hrs.
I have a 2021 VF90 SHO that I ordered in June of 2020 and received inAugust of ‘20 I have 164 hours on it. It does not make oil. I heard that a proper, hard break-in was the deal, so I did that. I have it on a Lund 1875 Proguide tiller. I get 40mph at 6k rpm. I’m running a Powertech PTR 17p.
Here is what i was told about making oil. My dealer told me the rings weren't seated correctly, mind you i bought a boat with 250 hours on it. My dealer cleaned the motor, I wish I could remember the process they did. However, when i got the boat back his exact words were run your boat wide open 6.000 rpms for an hour. I ran 35 minutes down the river, turned around and ran back another 40 minutes and have not had an issue since. I was told Yamaha's do not like all the Idling and need to be ran like a scalded dog now and then.
Wouldn't be surprised if you had to replace the piston rings to stop the making oil issue. Seems to be a ring seat issue, only way it's making oil is unburned fuel getting by the rings.
It's not oil It's fuel that make the oil level rise. Caused by excessive idling a cold or Luke warm engine, change oil and filter and do your idling after a good run.
I have a 1998 zx202c with the original 2.6ltr 200 carb vmax still going strong. I don't know what I'll replace it with when it does pop. It weighs 100lbs less than a new sho.

They stand behind there motors? Ask someone that runs there’s in salt water with all the coroission issues. Or the 350 that needs the flywheel replaced after a certain number of hours at a certain rpm. If not replaced it explodes…..look it up
Fair questions...We are freshwater guys up here in Wisconsin so we very rarely see Saltwater equipment but we do from time to time. Haven't experienced those corrosion issues or had and 350's in.
From what I gather, the "making oil' issue is predominantly a result of short runs. Basically if you're not planning on running 15-20 miles......then don't start the motor. 🤷♂️ Launch at the opposite end of the lake from where you wanna fish 😁. Everybody loves a long boat ride..... right?
I only blew up two outboards, both evinrudes. An 81’ 235 with over 1400 hours and a rebuilt 86’ 225 evininrude. Well I finally subscribed to Team Marine. I wasn’t going to because of the hate that’s given to Evinrude lol! But you guys grew on me I kinda get a kick out whatever his name is. I’m not ready to give a thumbs up yet though lol! 😆
We appreciate it JR! Thank you and we are gonna try like hell to get that thumbs up from ya! Ha
Love the old VW’s can’t tell you how many I have built lol.
I fixed mine from making oil by switching to conventional oil, change it at 50hrs now, I change the thermostat every 100 hours, and i clean the pressure control valve every time I change the oil. The oil was the biggest help. Mine made oil since I first bought it.
If you mixed Yamahas’s customer support & quality with Mercury’s performance/props and Suzuki’s looks you’d have the ultimate outboard
The newest ugly is the trim switch possibly energizing ignition coils even with key off and igniting any unburned fuel in the cylinders and blowing the intakes off the side of the block possibly starting a fire
Yep I've done 4 reflashes this week !
WOW!!! We have yet to see that issue!
@@TeamMarineService there’s a recall on this I believe
Big thumbs up to fastest VW I have ever seen!
👍🏻😉👍🏻
VW and especially old school VW that are usually Very Windy and Virtually Worthless. The dealer usually Voids Warranty because there a Vintage Wreck brand new! I've blown up my fair share of them. We Love your straight forward videos. My guys and I occasionally sit around on Friday evenings for a few minutes after work sipping on a cold beer and having some good laughs and rare knowledge watching your videos. Keep pumping them out, and we will keep watching them. You wouldn't be pissed off if I did some similar content about ATV's and SXS's would you??
LIKED RIGHT OFF THE BAT, I ALREADY KNOW IT'S FIRE!
I mean I've seen you do more in depth videos with the good the bad the ugly, just one question across the board for one particular motor.. the 225 VMAX hpdi. Solid?
Andy had to slow it down this week Blood pressure still flying high after the last couple dont worry he will be back to his normal soon
Andy Had to take it easy this week Blood pressure was still a mile high after the last couple don't worry he will be back at it next week
@@TeamMarineService well we care more about y'all guys then we do the actual videos! So I think everybody can learn to have a little patience and let everybody get back to their self.. but regardless if he was sitting there doodling cartoons with a pencil and paper explaining boats and motors I would still watch.. hope all is well hope everybody's doing better I hope he gets back to 100% soon! Good vibes from Alabama 😎✌️
Wow I'm impressed, the content editor had an easy time with this video. Not many Beeeeps. Happy Day .
🤣 I took it easy on him this week!
Yamaha bad/ugly is the 350V8
If that happens and not caught in time your engine is dead.
yamaha always been at the top for well made ive own three yamaha waverunners from in the early 2000s, they were a mile ahead of brp back then
I am purchasing a 175sho after just blowing up my merc at 900hrs .
I thought it was this as well.
Great video Andy.
There ya go 🙂
We have two Yamaha pwc 4 stroke. One NA one supercharged. They are so dang smooth!
The Yamaha V4 2 stroke tuning potential is simply jaw dropping.
What do you mean it's making oil ?
Just trying to understand that statement as I'm looking at getting one of these outboards in Australia
you know it’s a great motor when the best boat mechanic in the United States is struggling to find something bad to say about it
I appreciate the kind words buddy!
@@TeamMarineService I was going to say the world but I don’t want you to get too big a ego! Thanks for the great work and content your information is really helpful
@@DirkDigler209 Hahaha Team Marine Service is viewed in 83 countries! ;)
Suzuki, most reliable. Mercury goes fastest. Yamaha is a happy medium. Slower than Merc, not as reliable as Zuke. Sale pitch…
I have a 2013 Yamaha F150 With just under 3000 hours. Only problem one lower unit and at 2500 hours had to do The needle and sete ❤my YAMAHA
I have a 2021 VF90 SHO that I ordered in June of 2020 and received inAugust of ‘20
I have 164 hours on it.
I'm pretty sure you're correct.
Could you do a Yamaha service video
2007 hpdi series 2.....2 smoker absolutely bullet proff thing still rips
It's not oil It's fuel that make the oil level rise. Caused by excessive idling a cold or Luke warm engine, change oil and filter and do your idling after a good run.
I have a 1998 zx202c with the original 2.6ltr 200 carb vmax still going strong. I don't know what I'll replace it with when it does pop. It weighs 100lbs less than a new sho.
Dean's most likely there because the next MLF event is on Mille Lacs. Starts 9/10 I believe
Good to know Randy!
What about xx o66 2 stroke 225?
Tried to catch you guys while I was up there for the Elite tournament but wasn't able to make the time. Would have loved to see where the magic is made lol
i love their 1998-around 2007........there little 9.9,,,15 and 25 hp 2 stroke.was almost indestructible.........my little 15hp yammy 2 smoke is a 1999....i’ve had for almost 20 years and zero issues......except regular maintenance..!!!!.....great motor .!!!
Epa doesn't want you to be happy with a reliable motor.
Hey andy im looking at a 2019 skeeter 20ft with a yamaha 250 whats the fuel capacity on them
My 2011 F150 harmonic balancer failed and seized my cams in March 2022. Only 150 hours on the motor. Had to replace the entire top end. Don't trust it anymore, haven't had my boat out since.
Wow!!! That's not good!
Andy I got a video for you, I've only got 18 ft in my garage to put a boat what would you recommend? A lot of us out there watching you don't have a lot of room in our garage living in a neighborhood with an HOA and we'd love to hear your input. By the way love your videos you guys keep it up
What year SHO had bearing issues 🤔🧐
Generation 1 of the SHO's
For the HPDI Series 1, this is my first time hearing the oiler is the problem. What are some ways to improve the oiler? And what other things are to be on the look out for the series 1?
Good bad and ugly for various Prop brands.
Good bad and ugly on Hydra foils. Are hydra foils being used as quick fix for improper motor position/rigging?
WOW!!! THE YAMA OUTBOARD MAKES ITS OWN OIL! SO NEVER NEED OIL!?
You overlooked the F225 exhaust issue, that was a bad and ugly. If ignored would corrode the block/oil pan and ruin the power head. They dropped the ball on that one. I have one in my shop now waiting on the new exhaust kit.
Whats the difference between f90 vs the sho 90?
My 2022 Yamaha f70 shakes a little going less than 20 mph, I have a 22’ custom wooden boat with dual f70, starboard side is the 2022 model the other is is an older 2015 model
Got issues with my new to us 05 150 HPDI low hours 140some.
How we doin today everybody!😅
Happy Friday, hope everyone enjoys their weekend
2014 sho new power head in 2019 do to bearing. Free under warranty …. Broke in in April 2020 ran it 2500 to 3000 rpm 15 min let cool. Ran it 3500 4500 15 min let cool drove it like I stole it for 40 min trimmed up and hot. Continue to drive it like I stole it until 25 hours change the oil hasn’t made an ounce of oil.
And 2014 Jetta tdi cat delete and tuned . VW power
I want your take on the 2003 yamamerc 225 4 stroke. I have one with 400 hours and I love it. Upgraded exhaust mid section is all other than service. It’s not a race engine but it’s strong. I haven’t had it long and can’t find anything about it. The old guy I bought it from gave me the complete service record he maintained this boat and engine very well. It’s a 2003 proline 22 sport cc. I really would like to know what your thoughts are on the engine. Please
My 1986 Yamaha guitar sounds better today than when I bought it. Outboards are great too.
Good, bad, ugly for Suzuki please. I've owned them and love them, but curious as to what you will come up with.
Please do a video on the new Yamaha DES outboards.
From what I gather, the "making oil' issue is predominantly a result of short runs.
Basically if you're not planning on running 15-20 miles......then don't start the motor. 🤷♂️
Launch at the opposite end of the lake from where you wanna fish 😁. Everybody loves a long boat ride..... right?
I don't think it's a time run issue, it's a rpm issue. Got to run em hard.
Do outbound 4 strokes require valve adjustments like motorcycles?
How do you feel about the 2007 Suzuki df 70 are they pretty good out boards? I was looking at getting a boat that has one on it
I only blew up two outboards, both evinrudes. An 81’ 235 with over 1400 hours and a rebuilt 86’ 225 evininrude. I did buy a brand new out of the box 1993 200 merc that leaked around both head gaskets from day one, now that was a miserable experience! The best outboard I ever had was a 99’ 250 efi merc.
I ran a 225 EFI Merc for 26 years. Great Motor.
Are you talking about the legendary Pro XB
The swag will be here for Christmas....tshirts,etc. YAMAHA is a good product...my 2010 gets me out and back everytime
4.2 making oil, break in hard as hell when new, keep it trimmed in or down, get her hot hot hot yo break in that plasma coated
Cylinders since it does t have
The sleeves, that’s what I’ve been told
Since 2009, from the bass dudes. Supposedly that’s the key
I bet this is one heck of a fun shop to work in.
Any comments on the f150 exhaust corrosion issue? pretty well documented problem that definitely sits in the ugly category.
Love your videos. Very informative!!! Question, we are buying a 25' tritoon with a 2ft bow extension on it so really it is 27'. I'm going with your advice and throwing a Suzuki on it. Question is would you go with the df 250 tx4 or the 250 SS. Thanks in advance.
SS
😂. Happy bush!!!!!
Still running my 90 tlr 2008 😀
I'm looking at a boat with 2007 F350 Yamahas with only 246 hours. I have heard horrible things about the flywheel and harmonic balance issues. Should I walk away from this boat?
Jetski issues for Yamaha are engine mounts are made of poppadoms , all hose clips down low are mild steel not stainless rot through and cause problems and supercharger clutch bearings on 1800 engine other than that very good skis better than BRP
